Outside all of that, something just... Changed in me, here. My fervor was revived, and I reignited my willingness to make songs too dense to appeal to everyone. I am insanely grateful for this, Andrew. Years later, silly as it seems, I still look back on this video as one of my life's most important events.
@@stormy9144 it's cool, I just can't listen to that style for a long period of time. It gets boring and redundant really quickly. The sound design is definitely interesting but otherwise it just doesn't do much for me.
Exactly. It really exposed the comparison between actual high level producers like Riot and a Sarah who just pastes something over some pre made drums. It's night and day really.
@@YanzBra "high level" producing isn't what makes a producer good. It's about the creativity, originality and the view of the producer on his work. The difference is night and day, not good or bad.
@@EJM07 You're mistaking quality of output for technical capability. My little brother is 12 and he can drag samples from a pack over another sample, call it a tune and that tune might sound good. That doesn't mean he's done anything technically impressive, but if the output is good then of course that's a plus. High level capability in any artform doesn't determine success, it determines the ceiling of complexity and ability to create something original. I didn't mind Sarah's tune but VR could make that in 10 minutes and she could spend a year and not make what VR made. The subjective element of whether you like the music is irrelevant by this metric.
I was thinking the same thing. I understand Sarah has a different way of creating music, which some people might find simplistic whilst sounding good. But we have to admit that Virtual Riot Is extremely talented with complexity in his style of music. In my opinion way more than Sarah. I thought Sarah could have done a better job instead of just making a lo/fi type beat.
@@thecreepman09 I see your point but here is mine. I do not like the result of Virtual Riots efforts. The result is very similar to many other songs of that ilk. I see the technical difficulty in what he did but not the point. (for this experiment, yes but for overall why not use a stock "riser" instead of making one from scratch.. noone will know the difference). Sarah does not do much work but the result is good use of the sample. If we must declare a "winner" then we need to know the judging criteria and we do not. Therefore we do not have to admit ANYTHING other than each to their own. If I am stuck in a lift for 9 hrs I would rather have Sarah beat on repeat than Virtual Riot, get me?
Me too, it was much more dynamic, but Andrews was interesting as well. I could see Andrews on our local Jazz radio during experimental/electronic night.
Didn't look like jealousy to me. More like "what the heck is this crap, but uh, how the heck did he do it?". They clearly like a completely different EDM style. More lo-fi, minimalistic and chill. It's a style that's very popular, nowadays. But, despite not being fan of the genre, they were impressed by the technical skills.
As someone who isn't great at finding new music to listen to this series is amazing!! Thanks for bringing all these awesome artists together for these videos Andrew.

From hearing about virtual riot for the first time through this video when it came out, to watching him live twice this year, is something i never thought would ever happen.
So here is my opinion. Sarah - More of a DJ aproach than a music producer aproach by mixing 2 samples (the chopped piano chords and the drum loop) nice sounding but it made me feel like it could of been better. Adding a subtle 808 following the chords rootnote comes to mind and some subtle synth keys maybe even a pluck to add some sauce without breaking the old-school vibe. Bad Snacks - Straight up mind blown. The way all the different elements are introduced to the original sample is perfect giving it that happy joly vibe. I love it. Virtual Riot - Proofs you dont need a specific sample pack or specific synth to make a banger. Andrew - The incorporation of the live instruments is spot on adding nuance to the sound. Really like the smooth chill vibe.
Victor Pham no, Sarah isn’t the one who came up with the original sample, Nahre Sol is. Sarah’s track was a remix of Nahre’s sample, so it’s understandable that people are disappointed that she added barely anything to it.
Oh man! Chopping a held chord in half and flipping the first half for the second half is an amazing technique! This series is amazing! Please do more of these, and thank you for the ideas!

"Just cough into the mic, I have an idea"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I gotta hand it to you, I laughed so hard at this tho, cuz he would literally flip that into something amazing too, I can guarantee you that much! 😈😈😈
You can't make this joke anymore now 😔. Use sanitizer tho pls
This video had a significant impact on me. Virtual Riot has been my most listened to artist ever since, and I've since seen him and Bad Snacks live. That's not including the birth of my Huang love.
Outside all of that, something just... Changed in me, here. My fervor was revived, and I reignited my willingness to make songs too dense to appeal to everyone.
I am insanely grateful for this, Andrew. Years later, silly as it seems, I still look back on this video as one of my life's most important events.
Reaction time stamps:
Sample - 0:32
Sarah The Illstrumentalist - 2:43
Bad Snacks - 5:45
Virtual Riot - 10:05
Andrew - 14:58
You're welcome. ❤️
thank you!
😎
Love Virtual Riot's stuff, but gotta hand it to Bad Snacks, could chill to that any day
Yeah that kind of music usually appeald to almost everyoneas its so soft and just so chill.
Bad Snacks killed it
I think Vr is best.
I dont like chill music.
@@stormy9144 it's cool, I just can't listen to that style for a long period of time. It gets boring and redundant really quickly. The sound design is definitely interesting but otherwise it just doesn't do much for me.
it's generic af
VR absolutely stole the show. The guy's a genius omg
play it loud on the streets, put it on repeat
Andromulus kind of riddim!!!!
Eh I disagree. I mean his was really good but Andrew and Bad Snack's had way more soul.
heat seeker I see what you mean, but VR’s process goin into it, really ups the value of his
@@heatseeker9738 The amount of sound design and productions skill VR put into that heavily outweighs that soul by miles.
1. Virtual Riot 10:02
2. Andrew 15:00
3. Bad snacks 5:42
4. Sarah 2:42
Their faces reacting to VR song are priceless. They loved it but also felt He was on another level.
@@nicolasjovic More like it was very different from the style they like, but at the same time they were amazed by the technical skills.
I'd put Sarah above Bad Snacks tbf. Personal opinion
Sarah: I used my lo-fi sample pack.
Virtual Riot : I made everything from the original piano sample from base to shakers.
@@YanzBra I agree so much with what you said.
@@zweij Thanks mate
Every track was great, but Bad Snacks' one was my personal favourite... So chilled and beautiful.
Just like the creator.. 🤔😍
Her interpretation was beautiful
That drop at 5:10
Zak Lucero relax fool.
Sarah: well I added a drum sample and some filters.
Virtual Riot: hold my beer
@@TheStuF yeah you have s fair point. But again, it's just my personal opinion.
@@thecreepman09 fair enough.
@@TheStuF At the end its all personal taste but I think VR had the absolute best track but again that's just my opinion
I love watching Andrew’s reactions. You can tell he is hella inspired by music in general. I hope he keeps doing this type of video ❤️
Thanks for having me! 💕🤟🏾
You were amazing!
You have a dope studio, dope vibe, dope soul, and great instrumentals. Much respect

"I dont know how he does this"
Dont worry Andrew.
Me neither.
Best 17 minute and 24 seconds I have spent on UA-cam! Thoroughly impressed! I especially liked Andrews track and how jazzy it is.
Me too, it was much more dynamic, but Andrews was interesting as well. I could see Andrews on our local Jazz radio during experimental/electronic night.
Bad snacks went off but damn, VR...... the look of jealousy on everyone's faces lmfaoooooo
on Sarah's face**
🤣
Didn't look like jealousy to me. More like "what the heck is this crap, but uh, how the heck did he do it?".
They clearly like a completely different EDM style. More lo-fi, minimalistic and chill. It's a style that's very popular, nowadays. But, despite not being fan of the genre, they were impressed by the technical skills.

WE NEED PRAXI ON THIS
From hearing about virtual riot for the first time through this video when it came out, to watching him live twice this year, is something i never thought would ever happen.
Andrew: Hey guys, I've got the sample here, if you wanna give it a listen
Virtual Riot: *Running full system diagnostics: Operation Overkill*
best reference ever
haha nice one mate
Overkill is one of the best edm songs I've ever heard
its energy is super high
O-ver-kil
Riot - Overkill 😂🔥🤟btw that's not him if u think it is
LegendArySayain sorry to tell ya, but Riot is not Virtual Riot...
Sarah is an underachiever even from a hip hop purist's perspective.
@Victor Pham huh?
@Victor Pham what are you talking about.
@Victor Pham lol
Victor Pham no, Sarah isn’t the one who came up with the original sample, Nahre Sol is. Sarah’s track was a remix of Nahre’s sample, so it’s understandable that people are disappointed that she added barely anything to it.
Everyone: makes a chill trap beat with the sample
VR: This thing can fit so much Yoy in it

its good but not really feeling that vibe. its like a typical Drumstep track. Not really feeling the synths and bass
