Hello. I’m a Portuguese MD (an allergist in Algarve) and I must say that most of the qualities you mention as booking directly with a specialist besides your GP (which is also a specialty in Portugal) and short waiting times, are only for the private sector. And most Portuguese cannot afford an insurance, at least as good as yours, with our wages. This is why you have some Portuguese commenting negatively on our health system. And we do have 24h waiting times in emergency sometimes! (In public hospitals). The public system is falling apart and that’s why we have been having several strikes from nurses, doctors and other HCP. If nothing is to be done, we will loose that 12th spot soon…

well as Portuguese I can only add, yes everything can be improved in all matters... yes public hospitals are where the majority of the Popullation has to be treated, so its a very big number to serve... but the money spent on the system is huge, most of the problems and there are many has the system as said is big, but in my view and I have several friends MD , I even have a brother witch is professor in washigton DC in a University for future Doctors in one colloge of medicine, and the need for more personel sometimes is the problem not so much the money the state pays. comparade to other professions and general salaries, doctors are not payed badly, I just yesturday was looking at the salaries for an entry doctor to the top of the career and for Portugal is very correct ( we are not a rich country ). One of the big problems is made by the "Ordem dos médicos" witch restrict the number of candidates of medical schools with the complacency of the political power, that over the years gives this problem of not so many doctors to contract at least for some areas. And doctors nowadays they want to live more than well, they see their old collegues in private hospitals and their private offices making the double or more and they simply want more and more and because there are no many doctors, some and I know a few they devide work from public and private , they often work in one public and several private units this is a problem witch is now one of the biguest problems I would say, so probably you have other opinion or you are young and dont see this, not saying all doctors are like this , but well I just wanted to respond leaving this for the 12th place on that ranking, the nurses are other problem to, just yeasturday the news was the state payed just this past year in extra hours for doctors has many as 2775 entry doctors take as ealy salary...so its not that the state is not putiing money, the problem is the number of doctors that are not in the market because from the last 20 years the "ordem of medicos" is strategicly defending the corporation of doctors, here are lobby problems its called, but there are others yes....

I think that all these strikes come more from the Portuguese health system, which was made more for a certain number of people. What is coming from immigrants of all nationalities in portugal nowadays is ridiculous. The laws that the government put in opening the borders so easily, will not help Portugal and it is already overloading the national health system... because so many people arrive every day, and the doctors and nurses are less and less. These people who are arriving, how will they be attended to? This, of course, overloads the Portuguese health system and makes it worse from now on, and much worse. Why, less doctors for the amount of people arriving to live in Portugal? it just can't handle it, Portugal is a very small country and the governance system is also small, it simply won't be able to deal with so many people arriving every day to come and live in portugal.
Portugal has already gone through the Covid-19 crisis, in which many health personnel died, many were afraid and did not even go to work, those who worked were insufficient, and then, we can say that the public health crisis began. In which many doctors and nurses simply quit because they didn't want to work like this anymore... too many shifts, too much overload. With so few staff they were overworked. Who wants to work under these conditions? But that's not all, the medical profession has always been a respected and organized profession, but in recent years it has been seen that this is not the case, and the workload has changed for the worse, which means that when many go to university, do not choose medicine. Because it is no longer a profession that is no longer pleasant, but hard and very poorly paid in Portugal. But of course, this is my honest opinion, others will have another point of view.

The thing with the public health system waiting times is how it's divided. If you have a very serious problem you'll be treated as fast as possible and with the best treaments ther is, something like a cancer, etc... But if you need a routine check it normally gets longer to wait.

The moment a foreigner "adjusts expectations", it will also start complaining at a different level. :D

As for private hospitals, I advise you to take out insurance, you have insurance from €13 per month, I can't afford any type of insurance so when I need to go to an emergency, I pay around €100/150. As for the waiting time, it is generally around 2/3 hours with scans and blood tests already carried out.

Yulia, I don't think you mentioned, you can go to private hospitals with an insurance, but you can also go with no insurance. Just pay the fees. Normally, 80 to 120€ per consultation, depending on the specialist. ER in private hospitals, same thing. Of course it will cost more. I remember a few years ago, at 2 am, with no insurance, just received some meds through a catheter, 300€...
And another thing, in public service, if you need a specialist, first you need to go to your family doctor to schedule it (he sends a request via online app). It's not possible to schedule an appointment to a public hospital.

Whilst on paper the healthcare system seems great: it's basically "free" (you pay with your own salary), and you have access to everything, there's long waiting lists for simple procedures many times like an MRI, unless you go to a private hospital.
Usually private hospitals send a lot of people to the larger hospitals which are public, because the specialists are there. Those same specialists are also over worked and underpaid and many of them don't have the resources to take care of you as well as they could.
There's a lot of people abusing the healthcare system, also putting a lot of strain in ERs. There were tons of maternities closing down due to lack of people and investment. A pediatric isle was constructed in Porto and it took 10 years in unsanitary containers due to lack of government funding.
For some people a lot of the waiting times (5-6 hours + for non urgent topics) might not be a long time, and for other it is. What I can say is: the healthcare system is good, but very flawed, in need of changes and it's not as good as outside people might make it out to be due to the way it's organized

2:29 If you need to go to a ER,go to centros de saúde if you want to treat symptoms because they generally are prepared to treat smaller things whereas in hospitals it's for more complex and worse things, therefore only go this ER if you really need. Some Portuguese people don't think like that and the staff on the public hospitals' ERs gets overworked and has to take care of not that important patients rather than actual dangerous emergencies, when they could be treated in the health centres.

Well it depends , I am Portuguese I am 51 , I can say this , it can depend from hospital to hospital , I was last month 11 days in the Cascais Hospital, on the urology unit because I entered with a "Prostatite com obcesso" , the " urgency " i can say was the worst but we know everybody goes even when things are not that urgent, so "urgencias sao sempre diria o pior" I was nevertheless seen in urgency quite fast , and when seen immediatly the doctor said you are are not going out today you will stay , they rightly saw it was prostate problem I was clueless and thinking it was an hemmroid problem of the sort, they immediatly I mean in 20m made me a TAC (MRI scan I think its called) , I then took some hours to go to the Urology unit because it was full, that i can say was the poor part I had to wait fully assisted but on the emergy room where were all the beds with I lot of old people , the room had like 20 or more bad all bad situations that were pilling up on the emergency, after that I went to the 7th floor and my room had 2 persons, the room was very good, super quiet the bed was very good had private WC, TV , I was there for 11 days it was like an hotel , breakfast at 8am , lanch at 12:30 , at 4:30 pm tea and bread with butter , dinner at 7:30pm and at 11pm some more tea and cookies, I made 3 TAC (MRI) in all, i was with antibiotics all intravein , Man it was very very intense , they gave pills, bags and bags in the vein because I had major pain , I was very bad, they were on top of me all the time checking , they took more than 5 times blood tests , it was a superb stay like I said like an hotel, when I left super well just a bit weaker has when you dont walk you get a bit weaker and the stuff I had really stressed my sytem. after one week they sent me the TOTAL BILL of 41€ for all the TAC´s (3xMRI) all the blood tests all the pills and the 11 days of room hotel treatment food.... I entered almost dying with 42 degrees of temperature and shaking because of it, with pains that I never had and in the end I was good to go home, I was prescrebed and went to the pharmacy with 18€ more I purchased more antibiotic and pain pills if they came again , they never did, took the antibiotic more 14 days and after one month now I am super ok and all is behind .... I can say in the US with all this ( I have american customers when said they said with that you could became homelless in the US ) so , yes urgency is the worst but if something serious comes you are more than ok at least in the Cascais hospital for sure witch is a public hospital. I payed happilly the 41€...

This isn't 100% true though. Unless you go to a private hospital, public hospitals tend to take a long time due to the sheer number of people. A lot of old people just go to the ER to complain about a back ache which is nothing, it's just them being alone. My recently departed grandfather who died at 84, was known by the hospital and the doctors used to do a quick check up to understand if he was serious or not and usually they would just tell him to go home or give him a placebo shot, but these people usually take a lot of the spaces in public hospitals for people who actually need unfortunately.

We do have telemedicine here like Dialogue, but it's so so. Good enough to get blood test prescription.
Fun fact I learned. QC has the most private clinics in the whole of Canada which is semi against the healthcare act. Also, Canadian healthcare contrary to popular belief is already very similar to US healthcare and funding it even more won't make it work.

Hey Yuliaa, I’m a bachelor student of International Relations and I’ve been interested in pursuing my studies in Canada. I have stumbled upon a university called the University of Canada West, and it has had a lot of controversial opinions and reputation. Considering my budget, so far it has been the best option I’ve found, but again, if the diploma I get from that university will have no value and if I won’t be eligible for PGWP, then I’m not too sure whether that is the right choice. I will be starting my bachelors again for BA, and considering the fact that my grades are not satisfactory for entry to other public universities as well as my budget I’m really conflicted as to what to do. I was wondering if you could give me some advice. Thank you for your time :)

Don't come to Portugal for healthcare. You will be seen as a foreigner. There is no recognition of the reciprocal agreement with other countries. If you can speak Portuguese, and are a wizard on computers and cell phones, you may have better luck. Nothing is universal, there are multiple disconnected small networks.that do not share information. As far as insurance, you need to check whether the the network, or the hospital, or even th doctor, accepts your insurance.. And if you go to public hospital, you will be greeted with resentment. All of this inefficiency will tax your patience to the point of utter defeat.. Best of luck😢

I can tell you the same about the Italian healthcare system, because it's easy to complain about things than appreciate you live in a country where you can get treated at the highest level of care for free or for cheap, but it's just factually false. There are billions (BILLIONS, with the b) of people around the world that would book the flight tomorrow if they could, and more than 300m+ that still die from diseases Portugal has eradicated for decades. So, it doesn't really matter if you, David, disagree. Stats are stats for a reason.

  • @skaruts
    @skaruts Рік тому

The devil is in the details, though. Public healthcare is very costly in taxes (~950€ per person, ill or not, every year -- that's nearly two minimum wages), high waiting times (months, often), once in a while there's lack of stock for certain medicines or vaccines, hospitals are always packing and rushing to send people home ASAP, once in a while staff goes on strike (which only ever happens in public services), health centers are absurdly inefficient and you can literally spend an entire day on the waiting line...
On top of that, a lot of medicine isn't covered by the public healthcare system, as mentioned in this video. Growing up I kept hearing my grandparents always complaining that their retirement money -- or pensions, or whatever it was -- was never enough to cover their medical expenses, let alone to live with.
And the only problem with using private healthcare is just that it's going to be an extra expense on your shoulders, because you can't opt out of having to pay for public healthcare when you're not using it.

    • @ThisisYulia

Is it still the case? 100% of your videos about Portugal are filled with comments from Portuguese locals saying you have no idea what you're talking about, that the entire country is poor and struggling, and that people like you are the problem. I find it hard to even just try to talk to someone here, because even if I'm Italian (a Country with very similar problems), they'll start telling me for hours on end all the ways I'm the reason they're poor, mostly based on completely made up stats or costs (one told me "people come here with 200k salaries and then wonder why we hate them"... who tf comes here with 200k salaries? Most immigrants are from the EU. Richer than the minimum wage in Portugal? Yeah, but the minimum wage sucks EVERYWHERE around the world. The minimum wage in Italy doesn't even exist. @@ThisisYulia I'm Portuguese but live in England and have done most of my life. Portuguese people are not necessarily hating you, they hate the government because they favour immigrants (allegedly) over their own people. I personally think that goes for each and every country in the world. As you may know, the UK has the NHS which is free at point of service, but of course it is funded by tax that everybody pays, most national health systems are the same. But people here also complain about the NHS, which is probably one of the best national health service systems in the world, but as usual people must have something to complain about. I watch a lot of channels from people who have moved to Portugal and the thing that they all have in common is their amazement of how friendly the local people are and they cannot do enough for you. The Portuguese are too nice to not welcome you, but if you are mostly friendly with other immigrants (not ex pats, you're all immigrants) then you can't blame people for maybe not warming up to you so much.

MY CASE has example : I am Portuguese 51 years old , in public hospitals , it can depend from hospital to hospital , I was last month, 11 days in the Cascais Hospital, in the urology unit because I entered with a Prostate problem "Prostatite com obcesso" , the " urgency " i can say was the poorest part of the escellent service given to me, but we know everybody goes even when things are not that urgent, beacuse its cheap, I was nevertheless seen in urgency quite fast , and when seen immediatly the doctor said you are are not going out today you will stay , they rightly saw it was prostate problem. I was clueless and thinking it was an Hemorrhoids problem, they immediatly in just 20m made me a TAC (MRI scan I think its called) , I then took some hours to go to the Urology unit because it was full, that i can say was the poor part I had to wait fully assisted but on the emergency room where were all the beds with I lot of old people , the room had like 20 or more beds all situations that were pilling up on the emergency unit, after that I went to the 7th floor and my room had 2 persons, the room was very good, super quiet the bed was very good had private WC, TV , Window, AC, I was there for 11 days it was like an hotel , breakfast at 8am , lanch at 12:30 , at 4:30 pm tea and bread with butter , dinner at 7:30pm and at 11pm some more tea and cookies, I made 3 TAC (MRI) in all, i was with antibiotics all intravein , Man it was very very intense , they gave pills, bags and bags in the vein because is very painfull , I was very bad, they were on top of me all the time checking , they took more than 5 or 6 times blood tests , it was a superb stay like an hotel, when I left super well just a bit weaker what I had really stressed my sytem. after one week they sent me the TOTAL BILL of 41€ for all the TAC´s (3xMRI) all the blood tests all the pills and the 11 days of room hotel treatment food.... I entered almost dying with 42 degrees of temperature and shaking because of it, with pains that I never had and in the end I was good to go home, they prescribed pills to buy in the pharmacy, they costed 18€ more antibiotic and pain pills if they came again , they never did, took the antibiotic more 14 days and after one month now I am super ok and all is behind .... So public Hospital of Cascais was superb to me, happilly payed the TOTAL of 41€ = to go to a restaurant and have a good meal for 2 persons....but I had 11 days in a good room even with sea view, TV I watched a lot of movies all the ALIEN saga witch I love , had like 11 lanch , 11 dinners , 11 breakfast, and all the exams and all the care from the personell , and they gave everyday new and clean pijamas, I took everyday bath , I mean for 41€ its just not to say bad , and this is for all I am not a special case, everybody has the same right, I am a middle class person, of course hospitals have limits and well people complain , because there is allways a bad case or because people just know to complain of everything and sometimes one has to understand that sometimes hospitals are in full capacity, still you have the private option, but on private they will charge for it all, even with insurance at maximum you will pay in my case much more than the 41€ and I bet it can be worst has normally the public hospitals have the better equipment has the state is not comparable to one institution money purchasing resources
