Patrick Harrild was my Music Teacher at the Royal Military School of Music ( Kneller Hall) Twickenham. He is still my Hero! Thank you Mr Harrild! David Dawkins ( MR BEAN)
Writing a concerto for basstuba and orchestra is obviously a challenge. Vaughan Willams was a good orchestrator and was fully aware of this challendge. In the neoclassical style that he loved, he writes a concerto in which we have no acrobatics - even in the cadenza. The tuba is used as a powerful bass, and the orchestra is written in line with this situation. The work is rigorous and rather ascetic, we do not have mellow melodies which would not be in the spirit of the basstuba. The slow movement is melodic, for sure, but in a rather restrained way not to put the soloist in a situation it is not done to bear.
Absolutely incredible
What tuba player can resist the gnawing temptation to drop his jaw when he hears the unbelievable Patrick Harrild?
I certainly couldn't.
Breathtaking. I'm a young player learning this concerto for myself.
Wonderful playing so envious
I studied with Patrick from 1984-1989 hard taskmaster at first, then a great teacher once you proved yourself
It's bloody amazing ,,,,whoever played it ,,,,absolutely amazing
