I grew up in Welland, my father was Chief Engineer on these types of ships, I remember going through the locks with him when I was a child. It was a really cool experience.
How I miss the RMR report every Tuesday night.................I miss the down home, honest laughter and Rick's natural ability to make anything relatable.
7 years later after this video is posted my dad's out there working on that ship right now!! We're from lethbridge Alberta and he's definitely enjoying his time! Aside from covid issues lol
You all have NO idea how much I envy Rick, as someone who has lived a few blocks from the Welland Canal my entire life and would do almost anything, to travel through it on a laker!
Great one! No not *that* Great One, I mean this segment. I looked forward to it since it was announced, and it didn't disappoint. It's Boatnerd-worthy :)
In this video, Rick is actually exiting into Lake Ontario coming north from Lake Erie. Lock 1 is in St. Catharines, lock 8 is in Port Colborne. Good fun video for anybody not familiar with the process.
@@bilgeratjim Lakers are traditionally called" boats", not ships, even the 1000 foot ones on the upper lakes. The ocean going freighters are called "salties". Whitefish Bay is a bulk lake boat operated by Canada Steamship Lines with their headquarters in Montreal, for cargoes of stone, coal, grain, iron ore and the like, certainly not a tanker either.
Come on Rick!! Time to come out of retirement!! All of Canada and America loved your show! You are sorely missed!!!
so true!!! I loved his show

This was one of my first jobs. I grew up about 300 yards from Lock 8. Thank you Rick. You're the best BTW.
Watching this after the Canada documentary. I wish Rick would come back
I've travelled the Welland - it is an amazing feat of engineering and enduring operation. A great experience..!
I really miss this guy!!!
Thank you for showing us our Canada! :)
Ah, memories of when my Dad sailed the Great Lakes. Cute segment, Rick, thanks for this!
I live a block away and saw this ship today while walking the dog this morning. SO COOL!
im heading to Welland tomorrow, thanks fo the intro!
I loved growing up beside the Welland Canal.
Had no idea such ingenuity was possible
"Closer than the Tim Horton's drive-thru". xD
it is true!
Yeah. Seriously you literally can't throw a stone in any direction in this country without hitting a Tim's. I've tried
I lived on the east side of lock one in Port Weller East.
It was an engineering marvel of the 17th century! The first canal opened in 1829.

Monkey Deck. You Crack me,Up Rick Mercer. 😊.👍♡. Love This Guy ♡
Just remember Rick, a bad day on the water is better than a good day on land!
love the guy who ran a red. probably saw this and was like, uh oh. now everybody knows I ran a red light!
Welcome to Thoroald Ontario , where the Ships climb the mountain !
Omg I live right down the street

Description says Rick "traverses" the Welland Canal. He only went through one lock.
my dad work for the siu brotherhood he told me stories i was on them to
One of the many great things about living in Tennessee is, there are NO Tim Hortons!
This guy came to welland? Seriously, welland??
+Hannah mg St. Catharines
And he made it out alive without getting shot
@@sethstankus4984 nobody gets shot in Welland. You just got forcefed OV.
They should raise the bridge just a little for anyone who runs the red light...
enjoy toledo lol
O Rick I glad you made it out of Welland without getting shot
One small detail... It's Lake Erie, not Lake Airy. Like the things on the sides of your head, not the stuff you breathe.
These guys gwtting iron from baffinland?
I saw my school
who else is in quarantine watchin this for school purposes
guaranteed he never stepped foot in welland
I would like Rick alot more if he just left Jan Arden alone I can;t believe what she has to put up with (John From Alberta)
Not a tanker or an ocean freighter, rick!
+ron hawkins or a "boat", lol.
+Blacque Jacque Shellacque an ore carrier

@@BigLisaFan True, though they used to call them 'canalers' for obvious reasons.
@@djhrecordhound4391 Yes, canallers were about 250 feet to fit through the Lachine Canal.
I don't like this narrator there's definitely something wrong with him. Time to go see a psychiatrist.
