  • Three way to install 55 gallon barrels under the dock. Polypropylene rope, garden rubber hose or nylon straps are all good options.
PS. after using them 4 years, my ropes started breaking however the nylon straps and the old garden hoses are still going strong!

Hello, Thanks for leaving a comment. After five years of intensive use, I can say for sure that straps are the best and longer lasting solution!

Using a garden hose was clever. Thanks for sharing

I'm happy I was of help. I have tried so many ways over the years to secure the barils, I had to share my experience.

Yellow rope is usually polypropylene, not nylon.

Yes I agree. also after four years of making this video I have to say that old garden hoses are still holding on strong whereas the ropes started breaking because I drag them on the ground when I push them and I pull them out of the water. added bonus: used garden hoses are free and gives them a second life avoiding land fill!

I wouldn't use hooks. Somebody swims up and reaches out and misses the board and rips their hand open on the hook. Use eyelets hooks!

Have you left your dock in the water over the winter? How well do the barrels hold up?

We never leave the docks in the river as we get drifting ice during spring. It would get completely destroyed. If it was a small lake, I would leave them in.

Im on year 3 now and it's doing well. Didn't have to service any of them. By tge way they go through abuse as we pull the docks up with an SUV and they rub through cement and rocks...

how long would the rope last?
would it last longer than stainless steel cable?

depending on the quality it will last 5 to 10 years. Also it depends if you lift your docks rather then slide over the ground it will last longer...

      photographiedynamic thank you very much.
I was wondering how long do you think a dock in a protected ocean bay would last made of barrels?
Do you think a dock would last
15-20 years with replacing barrels and wood that goes soft?
I just want to put a little hunting and fishing shack in a remote place. Even if it lasts 10 years it would be worth it for me

@@RustyShakleford1 Treated wood, galvanized nails and new barrels will last you easily 10 to 15 years. If you care for them and apply a sealant, I'm sure you can take it to 20 years.
