Hi I’m thinking of buying a 2016 Lexus is200t with 100,000 miles for $18,000 do these cars have any problems I should look out for? If so what are other alternatives?

@sheparddog117 Jeeps, to me, are the skateboards of cars - they technically _can_ be used for transportation, but fundamentally, it's a toy to play with.
What is he looking to do with it? I used to take my *Prius* on forest roads and even drive off of those over uneven terrain around primitive camping areas. Unless he is looking for something _specifically_ for OHV parks, I'll bet there are better options, and "real" off road jeeps get trailered to the parks, anyway
@sheparddog117 Many people have an unearthly hate for the Prius - I would only ever suggest it with the utmost of caution, and probably _never_ as an alternate to someone already set on a jeep! Would he really feel like less of a man in a Rav4 or something?
In any event, I'll give you the same advice passed on to me by St. Doris of Groveland (my mother) - "sometimes we just have to be the bigger person."

Those old CJs are great. You can do almost anything with them, however going 65 in a Willys Jeep is akin to re-entering the atmosphere in Apollo 13.

One of the things that make jeeps good off road is that their wheelbase is very short so they can turn sharply and they're harder to high center. That's not really what you want for high speed stability though.

We had a 1950 Korean War era army surplus Jeep. 24 volt system, all armored electrical system, connection on the carburetor intake for a snorkel to ford streams and rivers, blackout headlights and taillights and the original 4 cylinder flathead engine. My Dad bought this thing for a few hundred bucks from a private owner and Dad and I rebuilt the engine. Needless to say, Dad was the mechanic and I learned ALOT!! There was trouble with the electrical system so my Dad converted it over to 12 volt and replaced the blackout lights to street legal lights. Then he painted it blue much like this one. It only went 65 mph full out but that's because it was geared very low as all Jeeps were. I was 13 then and I learned to drive on that thing, and it was a blast!! This vid brought back alot of memories. I'm 13 again and Dad, though gone now, is right here in my heart.❤️

Kid up the street bought a 53? We put synchros in the trans. He drove it from colorado to texas. Open top in winter!

@@nigelclark7360 Interesting. India makes some interesting vehicles. Their main automaker, TaTa makes some cool stuff this country should import or companies here could take a lesson and build equivalent models. India makes a CJ Jeep replica that's like 3/4 scale for off road, not street legal. Saw a few up close at a Honda Motorcycle dealership in Connecticut. Man, they look great! And they're affordable. Something like 10 to 12 thousand dollars. If ANY company could mass produce something like these for the road and bring them in at a similar price that would be a game changer!!

I had a 57 Willis with 5:38 gears. Top speed was almost 50 and it was screaming. 65 would be impossible unless someone changed the gearing.
I am a retired firefighter. My department has a 1954 Jeep CJ-3B. The Jeep is also retired. Back in the day I drove that Jeep where angels feared to tread. That Jeep was, and still is, an amazing vehicle.
Good ol brush jeeps are they best in my station
We have an old CD jeep at my department, the thing has been smashed by a tree and just shrugged it off

I have a 1951 Willys CJ3a with the original Willys Go Devil flathead 4. Breaker points and condenser. So reliable!

@@ujayet last real jeep was the TJ Wrangler..... The chassis and underpinnings we're still from the CJ 8 just improved..... And they still had the AMC i6..... That was peak jeep, especially with the Rubicon package
Computers are not crap! They straighten out things that would otherwise cause rough idling or worse fuel consumption!
They allow you to know if a part is going bad!

Scotty, I’ve never owned a vehicle that was so easy to work on. It’s a 01 JGC Laredo 4.0L IN6 with the 42RE transmission. I just replaced the throttle valve cable myself, it now drives better than brand new. I realized from day one that everything on it is 20 years old, so I’ve been replacing all kinds of parts even though it runs fantastic. It’s the ultimate survival vehicle, I love it!
Ditch the 42rle as soon as you can. The engine operates at 192 degrees and Mopar's trans fluid breaks down at 215 degrees.
If you live in a hot climate and do any 4wheeling the trans will overheat and die.

You shouldn’t have to replace all kinds of parts. It’s only 20 years old. My Toyota pickup from 1994 still runs fantastic and I’ve only ever replaced a radiator because it didn’t work anymore. It was a GM radiator, so that makes sense. Some came with GM radiators for some reason

@@cactneir the 4.0 used to come with Toyota's Aisin 4 speed AW4 automatic. The AX15 manual is also a fantastic option, if you can drive a clutch... and swap all the parts! X3

What he SHOULD have said was, "famous for lasting forever." I'm not a Jeep guy, but have known and talked to a lot of Jeep owners. The gist I get is that most of the engines were really good, as were the manual transmissions. It's the rest of the Jeep that can fall apart and become a problem, especially for such a simple vehicle. Plus, you don't often know what craziness any previous owners did to it that may have shortened the life of several components.

These vehicles will never depreciate. Also...I love how the grille and fenders come up with the hood- super easy to work on!

Had an '81 CJ5. Flipped it going hunting one morning. Landed wheels down with me still sitting in it. Cranked it back up and drove it another 10-12 miles. Loved that old Jeep.
Jeeps are hella fun, but you don't get a Jeep for going fast..... or for a comfortable ride
My friend had a Nissan Patrol it rode like a Mercedes. It was a monster machine unbreakable.

I had a 86 CJ-7 the last of the real Jeeps! Straight 6 and a 5 speed manual! It was lots of fun!
My first car was a 86 CJ7 renegade. I broke it
Still have my '86 CJ-7! Daily driver spring through fall here in Georgia.
That was still an option forever. My 92 had a 5 speed manual, but was the 2.5L 4 and not the 6 cylinder.
I drive a 2010 Jeep Wrangler and used to own a 2016 75th Anniversary Edition. The older Jeep's transmissions are geared lower because they were meant for off road use and rock climbing. The newer Jeep's are grocery getters and mall crawlers.

I got an 09 Sahara that I’m basically just going to keep the frame and body but replace everything else in time, but even with the everything that was stock, it was great for what I used it for, went off roading at least twice a week, and never got stuck, though I did hydrolock the engine twice. We don’t talk about that

You can get the Rubicon model. Very low gears. Actually, the new Wranglers have a 2.72 Low Range in the transfer case. Thats LOWER than the old CJs 2.31 low range. Plus they have way better suspension in them.
That Jeep's hood is the coolest one I've ever seen!
My family has had 3 Jeep’s when I was growing up. 1994 Jeep Cherokee XJ, 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ, 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and for me I had a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ.
I was in a training unit for the Army in Germany and we had these new Mitsubishi Pajeros and 90s Cherokees and those things were bulletproof and can go through mud and snow all day. We also had an F-150 mostly for hauling gear but when we tried taking it through trails it just got stuck lol.
I got a CJ-7 in the back been setting their since 06. We start it up every few years still works and everything. Amazing vehicle looks and sounds badass. My summer 2022 project to do a small restore and get it going for some real driving.
I had a 1990 YJ for 5 years. I daily drove it and went off-roading aaaaalot. Parts are dirtttt cheap, super easy to work on and it turned heads. But yes it sucks a lot of gas, it’s carbed, the springs are stiff and you will wonder all over the road especially the higher you lift it and if it’s windy. Fun weekend warriors!
When I was a kid I had a 1970 Superbeetle. One tough winter when everything was covered in snow and ice it was just me and a couple Jeep’s on the road - the entire city was parked!
My 92 XJ still runs like a top. Great vehicle. For how old it is and how well it still runs, most can't say the same thing. I'll never get rid of it.
My daily driver year round is an old wrangler. And it's been reliable. Gas mileage isn't even bad.
That’s how I feel about my 2000 TJ, even with the computer that 4.0 straight 6 is a BEAST

I know she's not in the same age group but our 2001 4.7L V8Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is still going strong. I've had her since she was 4 years old and she's taken us up and down Colorado mountains in all weathers for some years and withstood Texas heat for the last 9 years. 179661 miles so far and not much has gone wrong. She is very comfortable into the bargain. I LOVE my Jeep but I wouldn't buy a newer one.
I got 3 and love them all. No issues here
I have a stock 2003 Jeep Wrangler. It has 150,000 miles on it with no problems. It is noisy, rough riding, top speed is around 85 mph, and never gets over 18 mpg. I love it. It has great AC. Off road it can’t be stopped. I love it.
I won't own a car or wrangler, my favorites are 1963 to 1991 full sized wagoneer, grand wagoneer, and trucks. The only small jeep I'd owned and have owned is a 1968 commando. Currently I got 2 wagoneers and a grand wagoneer. These things were the first factory 4x4 suvs on the market. I need to get a Willis wagon and truck, then I can die happy.

The first time that happened to me, when I was 15, and learning to drive a stick. The first thing that happened was a jeep drove by then turned around, and a cute older boy I went to HS with, pulled up and asked us if there was a problem. I was so embarrassed, trying to learn a stick. LoL. But then, I realized that jeep people wave at each other all over the place. It's something I miss.

I have a 95 YJ…. Love it… had it for over 10 years…. Little 4 cylinder automatic with AC….The engine sounds like a sewing machine… little touch of rust.. nothing major at all… I love it..

I love my first Jeep a 2021 Sarge Green, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport, with a 2.0 turbo engine & 8 speed automatic transmission.

My 55 Willys with F head 134 about 70 HP will go about 80 mph top speed but it does have 32 inch tires on it. Iy also has a PTO (power take off ) Koenig winch on it with 9/16 steel winch cable that will handle 30,000 lbs.
Old Jeeps will never die and are loved by generations of Jeep folks

A friend of mine had a modern 4-door Jeep and let me drive it one night. I was surprised at how STIFF they ride - and it was completely stock. You literally feel every crack in the road and the smallest bump/pothole shock will transfer directly to you. It also wanted to wander a lot at highway speeds and had to continually work to keep it centered. They SUCK for daily driving yet I still see so many of them on the road lol
Hey Scooty, I just traded up this year from a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to a 2018 Toyota Tundra. I blame you. I am happier and very hopeful that this truck will be with me for 25 years to come
I have a 20 Tundra...those trucks are pretty awesome. The V8 has plenty of power

I used to drive an 18 wheeler back in the 70s with double shifting levers. You had to put your arm through the wheel to steer while shifting with both hands. And no syncro, so don't miss a gear. 😲
I have a Mitsubishi Jeep j58, essentially the same style as the old style cj jeeps with some japanese goodies. Has a gen 1 pajero 4g54 (2.6L 4 cylinder) swap. Drives like a dream and has plenty of power and torque
Watching you drive the Jeep was like a movie where the car is going straight but the driver keeps fiddling with the steering wheel.
I've driven these and forgot about all the steering corrections that need to be made constantly.And don't put me in a Jeep on the highway, I don't like all the bouncing and swaying! (;
Wandering can be caused by loose front end components. Loose track bar or ball joints or both. Stuff like that. Replace them and it might drive straight down the road.

My first experience driving a Jeep was in a Gladiator for work about a year ago.
As a result of that, I will never touch anything Jeep makes ever again.
I in 2006 I bought a used 2000 Camry with almost 100,000 miles. The prior owner never changed the fluid and was very dirty. I drained and refilled about 5 or 6 times all in one day untill it was clean. I had a rough shift after from 3 rd to 4 th. After 2 months the new clean fluid worked it's way in and it always shifted good from then on

Can be dangerous, because the other risk you run is it messing up and damaging itself. If I were to do that I would have performed the flush and then added either 3/4 or half recommended amounts of lucas transmission fluid ... "thickener." Then waited to see if any new problems arose (like your 3rd-4th issue.) Chances are, they wouldnt have, and then, I would have later on gone back to "normal viscosity" fluid, as in, without the additives. Seen how that worked out. Delicate doesn't hurt
Currently own 3 Jeep’s. 1948, 2008 and 2021. Each other has its own personality. My favorite is still the 1948
Stop driving the 48, and try to put just as many miles on the other two. Keep track of the repair costs.
Sell the 08 and the 21, and buy a proper modern jeep like a TJ rubi or LJ......

My wife owned nothing but Jeep until they no longer were Jeeps anymore. Most of the models now look nothing like Jeeps and don’t even handle like jeeps.
People we know who still drive them have to lease them because they have major repairs needed in the first 100,000 miles. Jeeps used to be very well built she got almost 250,000 miles out of one until a mechanic did a faulty repair job. Understand she loved Jeeps so much it was in her email address and now she explains why she doesn’t drive one anymore.
Prices of older Wranglers is skyrocketing, I had a 2003 Jeep Rubicon Tomb raider edition, those are worth over $35,000 now lol.
Jeez- I saw one of those 6 months ago for 20k. I bought my 2004 Rubicon (with long arms and 35's) for $13k 1 year ago. Probably worth 20k now.
Why would someone pay that amount of money when it is more expensive than a new Toyota pickup truck. Like a basic 4x4 tacoma
I bought a 2000 TJ in 2017 for 4800. Manual trans (5 speed), 4.0 straight 6, custom rims and tires. It’s had a few problems over the years, cosmetically the paint and bodywork need to be done, but other than that I LOVE the car and it’s 100% in my plans to get this thing fully restored, keep it for life 😎💯
I have a clean 1980 CJ7 with the 2.5. It's plenty of motor for a little rig. It's not a drag racer but it goes everywhere off road and is extremely fun. Stupid reliable too. Would recommend
95% of jeeps are still on the road today… And the other 5% actually made it home

My '78 I6 CJ7 will last me for the rest of my life. No AC and no air quality crap to crowd the engine compartment, it's a breeze to work on. And as my mechanic told me, the very small oil leak in the valve cover gasket has kept the rats from chewing my wiring up; my neighbors haven't been so lucky.

I have an 1987 YJ Wrangler with the 4.2 and 5-speed. First year for the Wrangler (square headlights) and the last year of the AMC vehicles before Chrysler got a hold of them. Love my Jeep.

I've got a Jeep YJ that I'm fixing up. I'm not a trained mechanic but it's all stuff I can do with the Haynes manual and some UA-cam videos. It's a real joy to work on.
I loved my 98 Grand Cherokee Limited had a 5.9 360 Magnum in it. Sadly it finally gave up earlier this year, had a little over 220k miles on it. Also had a 2000 XJ with the bulletproof straight 6, unstoppable motors. The body rusted out before anything else. MI so crazy salt.
My 98 xj is at 250 thousand miles still strong
Should've kept the 5.9 ZJ and rebuilt it. Almost unicorn status now.
I flogged a '79 CJ-7 Golden Eagle for 6 years. The only thing AMC made was the rear axle and the body tub. 304 c.i. International-Harvester engine. 4-speed GM tranny with bull-low 1st. gear. I bought brake parts at the Chrysler dealer. You could see thru the AMC decals to read the Motorcraft logos stamped on the ignition system. The 4x4 parts were Dana-Spicer. Dude I love my jeep it's a 2003 rubicon and I bought it new. With 82k miles and sits on 37 inch with a long arm kit and rock jock axles with 4.88 lockers front and rear with competition cage and a 392 hemi. No rust. One owner. And Gertrude is a beast. 0 to 60 in 6 sec on 37 inch tires. Beat that with your old beater.

Scotty you were totally right bout synthetic oil leaking I put it in my 88 Samurai and it leaked bad switched back to dino oil leak stopped!
Let me tell you a story. Naw.. my Jeep can only go to 95mph. If I can get 4 more years out of my 2004 high mileage Tj 308,000. I'll be happy.

@@calliew311 yeah you wouldn't have that problem, I bet there are still YJ's and TJ's on the road, up here in Canada, because we use salt on the roads in winter, they are becoming less and less common, I would live to take a trip down south and buy one in decent shape and drive it back, maybe even an older CJ.
I've got a 2011 JKU. I bought it two years ago with 112,000 miles on it. I've now got 225,000 miles on it. Yup. 113,000 miles in 2yrs of driving - and the only FAILURES was an alternator when I first bought it and an idler pulley a few months ago. 6-speed manual transmission easy to maintain. Around $15 per drain/fill. Differentials drained and filled every few months for a cost of $12. Always running synthetic 5W-20 every 8k-10k miles with a K&N filter that I clean each time.
If you take care of a Jeep, it'll take care of you. If you just put gas in it and do oil changes, you're not doing enough. You've gotta go thru the WHOLE JEEP every once in a while. I've added my 113,000 miles at an average of around 250 miles/day and it's never left me stranded. Thing MOVES!!!
And I added a supercharger to it about 8,000 miles ago.
I passed Scotty while he was cruising in this Jeep. Glad I wasn't around for that lane drift!
My CJ5 and CJ7 were great. They never died. Only issue was they were too short. Wheel base was a square box

Decades ago the town I lived in bought an old 6X6 5 tone army truck and converted it into an off-road firetruck to primarily fight grass fires on the ranches. It had lots of power but did not go very fast, and there was a good reason for that. One day we were responding to a grass fire call and we started going down a hill with a full load of water and managed to get above 60 MPH and the front end started shaking so bad it was hard to keep it on the road. We immediately had a sign made for the dash that told anyone driving it to never go above 50 MPH.

When I was a young fella I had a '74 mail carrier jeep with right side steering . I would respond to volunteer firefighter calls with the doors wide open. It had a straight six , original am/fm radio , heater/defrost, a single seat , speedometer and that was about it. It was loads of fun driving friends around and nothing for them to hang onto. I don't know if the USPS still resells them or not . California used to paint them different colors and tune them up for resale .
Cool, my neighbor had one growing up always thought it was neat seeing him drive on opposite side. I still see people selling them every once and again but I think they started using a left hand drive, i dont know what kind car in the 90s

My 85 Cj7 that I bought in Feb 2020 has zero rust, none at all, of course it's lived its entire life here in northern Calif....I paid $3000 for it from my Dad's 80yr old huntin buddy, he said he's too old to climb on and out of it and had a hard time with the clutch....what he failed to tell me was that, aside from regularly performed oil changes, he did absolutely NO MAINTENANCE on this Jeep, Ive replaced and upgraded everything save for the tranny/transfer case, front end, and motor...EVERYTHING ELSE HAS BEEN REPLACED...I've sunk $14,400 so far not including what I paid for it....and in fact it's havin head work done right now because last week my oil looked like a chocolate milkshake....but I LOVE JEEPS, this is the 4th one, and the most recent model year, I've owned....
You are still 3 grand under what I paid for a used 2013 Jeep wrangler sport 2-door, that will not drive reliably after warmed up in 3 miles. 20 grand---down the toilet.

Had a '79 CJ5 with the 256 (?) straight 6. WIldcat edition blue and white with fanjet mags. It would climb a tree! Over 30 MPH couldn't hear yourself think with the ragtop. Over 60 you were livin' on the edge. It was awesome :)
That would be the carbureted 2:58 AMC's best motor. I have an 83 CJ5 with a 258 runs perfect. I have to work on them but they'll run forever
Only Jeep that needs a V8 is a Grand Cherokee. The Hemi WK2's are awesome on road trips - except when the time comes to fill it up 😭

When I was shopping for an old Grand Cherokee I walked away from v8s on the lot. Only the 4.0L inline six for me. Still moves pretty quickly but nearly indestructible engine is the reason for buying them.
old J10s, Wagoneers and other full size Jeeps could use a little V8 torque also..
I bought an 06 TJ when they announced it was the last year for the 4.0L inline 6.

My brother’s old ‘78 CJ-5 had the straight 6 and would bark tires from gears 1-3. I still love the old 7 and wish I could afford one.

I had a 1976 CJ 7 with the AMC V8. I got it all fixed up and cherried out, sold it and it's still a head turner. I currently get groceries in my 99 TJ with a H.O. straight 6. New Jeeps are always waving to me, its hard to acknowledge that junk as a Jeep.
The best thing is how they leak oil and water. I miss all my oil spots and driving to work with a towel just in case it rains.
I remember back in the late 60's J C Whitney sold a stainless steel body replacement.

I was t-boned in my 2015 Rubicon and that brought me a whole new level of respect for the JK body. The pickup that hit me was traveling at least 25 miles an hour and had a trailer behind. The rocker bar distributed the impact along the entire stretch of the driver's side from the door back. I'll probably have to rebuild it from the ground up, but I doubt any other vehicle I have ever owned could have handled that impact without my ending in the hospital. The pickup that hit me was totaled. My jeep was driven up on the flat bed.
@Toyota: Have volvo v70T5, changes trans oil every 40tkm, no problems at all. you have to change your oil correct or better flush it... The trans lives with oil and from the oil... Most they do not have a filter to chnage so hit out the oil every time you feel the tran is go rough...
He should put a 1,000 hp Hellephant crate motor in it like they are doing with the new Jeeps.
