Just dropped off my 04 this morning at Mechanicsville Toyota to get my frame replaced. 1 month shy of 15 years and 328000 miles but still covered by the frame warranty extension. They said it would take about 6 months to gather all the parts and the frame, and 3-6 days to do the work. All covered under warranty. They wouldn't let me drive it off the lot. Gave me a rental truck until it's done. It was that bad.
I have an 06 that got approved. My question is what all did they replace besides the frame? Mine has a few other issues besides the frame. Wondering if they might discount parts/ labour? AC needs new condenser, rear hubs leak fluid onto brakes, alternator about to go, ujoints, and brake lines leaking. I just stopped driving it they didn't offer a loaner until the frame comes in.
@@bobbybrown614 they told they would be happy to replace needed parts (free labor)that they were going to remove and reinstall onto the new frame. I had them install new shocks and struts, calipers, rotors, pads, and a new 3 in liftkit. I did all the ball joints and in&out tierods after i got it home. All purchased from Amazon and advanced auto. Good luck
I've been driving trucks and autos for nearly sixty years and have had a lot of people work on my vehicles (including myself). There's one local guy I would trust with most issues but I doubt I'd let even him work on my Toyota. When I want quality work done I take it to a Toyota dealership. It costs a little more but I've only had one issue with a Toyota tech. A young pup tried to tell me I needed a part replaced and I knew otherwise and a bunch of miles later I know I was right. Don't take everything they tell you for granted, people are people, but when I want an expert diagnosis or repair it's off to Lemieux Toyota I go. The entire frame scenario including the way Toyota handled it was in my opinion a credit to Toyota. They're not the idiots who refuse to find an alternative to salting roads and they coughed up a lot of money to put solid frames under vehicles that would otherwise been short lived. Have not seen Ford or Chev do that and believe me their frames rust away as well.
Now I know why it took so long for my packages to arrive from Amazon........ did you see how long that FED EX truck sat there without being worked on? LOL
they said mine will be done mon it's been a week they put 600 on it for arms said i cant pick it up tell i pay. Tried ther best to get some money out off me. So i have to pay 630 to pick up Toyota would not cover it. Sucks gave me a 2020 reant car that was cool
Mine took 3 days. Toyota got billed $15,500. The dealer kept calling to say I needed this or that replaced. They told me I needed a new belt. I was like......I don’t think so...that one has 4 hours on it. I had just changed it when my frame broke in the front. I had to wait 6 months for the replacement. Toyota didn’t give a crap about me not being able to drive it. Wouldn’t give a replacement truck while I waited.
NorthWest Firefighter it depends on the dealership, we were replacing them over the weekend you get a car from the day we failed it until you get it back, if any work is needed we do it at half cost since it’s already apart
How long did it actually take you to complete the repair? my 09 TRD sport bdl cab long bed was dropped off on Monday morning and I was called on Wednesday morning telling me it was ready. Now I have been turning wrenches for over 30 years, so I know that's a lot of work. I'm not sure if they had more than one guy on the job or not, I picked it up on Thursday morning and haven't had any issues. To be honest I wasn't crazy about the idea of my truck being taken apart and put back together without doing it myself. Although I got a free brake flush and cooling system service because they replaced the coolant, with just over 210,000 miles it was overdue for both. My invoice was just over 10K, while I consider my Taco to be worth much more than that I'm not sure what actual book value is on it with the miles, however I wouldn't trade it for three times that.
I didn't pay for the frame to be replaced, the invoice had just over 10K was what Toyota was paying the dealership for performing the repair. I did pay for both rear shocks that were broke and the rear brake hoses. I paid dealer cost for the parts with no labor for installation. My truck did have over 200K miles, and I was getting a new frame. You don't bother with the little issues; My bill was like $270 ? $50 for each rear Bilstein and whatever for the brake hoses; Keeps me from dealing with them for a few years. I put 500 miles on their 2018 Tacoma they put me in with like 935 miles on, I turned it in over 1400. I did get a seat cover from work to put in it, respected their wishes and did not smoke in the vehicle. Although from that experience I can tell you, if you look at Tacoma's, make sure it's a V6. That truck got great mileage, didn't have any power. If your looking for economy, it's the cat's pajama's. I had to replace the muffler because it was rusted out, no big deal, I got a "Banks" cat back system. If you own this type of truck, this is the exhaust system you want. 3" stainless, mandrel bent. Muffler increases flow 211% 4" chrome or black tip. Uses factory hangers. And well worth every penny, got one on my junk right now. I have the TRD cold air intake with the throttle body spacer thing from whoever. So far I have hit 450 miles to a tank, I just gotta keep my foot out of it. LOL... These trucks are GOLD, if you can get one, get two, I rolled over 219,000 miles yesterday; While that's just a number, I'm looking forward to 233,129. That will be the point where I have put 200K on my Taco, I have over 150K on the tires; I'm probably going to get a new set when they hit 200K just because.
They had checked the frame from the recall and said it was good first, then when I took it for state inspection they checked it again and said it had " qualifying perforations " and they had already sent pictures to Toyota and they said put a frame in it. I told them they already looked at it and they said Toyota extended it, I'm sure glad they did; That invoice was just over $10,000. So the dealer gave me a loaner 2018 Tacoma with like 239 miles on it, I put 500 on it in 3 days.
I heard that depending on the place...if yours isn't too bad, that they will just spray it down with rust protection...so if i were you, id wait until its very bad for a 100% frame replacement.

always wondered how much longer it would take to drop the engine with the frame... we usually keep them up in the truck with a engine support.. but honestly doesnt look like it added much if any time to your swap
Dan K. We also kept the engine and transmission in the body. We didn’t have to open the ac, coolent or unplug the harness. We would have the bed and body up in about 45 minutes.
Got my bar I used to use on front wheel drive cars that could probably hold the engine in the body but securing the trans on a 4 wheel drive looks a little sketchy. Did you do this on 2wd and 4wd?
I am getting ready to do this. So you support with an engine bar like I used on front drive vehicles back in the day, fender to fender? The trans is 4x4 and attachment points to hold it in the body look sketchy? Any advice? Would love to minimize the work and take advantage of the lift.
I never saw him scratch his head once! And he only stopped his work to talk one time. I never saw him put a part on then remove it in an "Oops" because he got his procedure order mixed up. That guy is worth his weight in gold!
This is most likely a recall replacement. So it will cost him nothing. I just got mine done. It started falling apart when it was only 4 years old. By 13 years old the frame broke in the front. Toyota got billed $15,500 dollars for the replacement.
Amazing Work! I'm going through this with my 2006 Tacoma 4.0 V-6. I bought the truck in November of 2016. They said it passed the recall and put that Undercoating on it. After owning it for 2 years My mechanic showed me how bad it was getting I got in touch with Crestmont. They said the Recall is over. I have dealt withThe Toyota Engagement Center a few times they told me the same thing. Had the Truck in for a Transmission service last Friday. You can actually stick your finger through the chassis behind the front tires. I'm waiting for correspondence from Toyota Corporate. The truck is 17 years old with only 111,000 miles on it. I bought it a year after I retired hoping it would be my last purchase.Any impt from you on what I should do?
Unfortunatly toyota has ended their customer support program. My only recommendation is follow your owners manual section about cleaning your vehicle to care for your vehicles. Especially if you live in an area that has heavy salt and what ever else is used.
Richard John My truck listed in as $12500.00. (2003 double cab.) I bought it from a dealer that got it at auction. I paid around 12000.00 for it. Honestly, Toyota should have just junked them and paid out.
So much work. I bought my 2005 DC after Toyota had replaced the frame at 201,000 miles, then I got it oil sprayed and I spray Fluid Film inside the frame focusing on the riveted in plates
We wish, I’m about to do a frame tomorrow after it’s all done I’m going to ask for a raise, just got done doing valve seals had the entire engine apart took a few a days but it was done right. Most guys at my job was making 20-25 dollars an hour it’s a 40 hour job

I had a 05 with a bad frame I had to fight with the dealer just to admit there was a recall. When Toyota and the dealer finally admitted it they told me I had 18 months to complete it and I couldn't drive it. I traded it for a Nissan 1 month later they called me looking to due the recall
They are scum bags aren’t they. The class action lawsuit FORCED them to start changing the frames. When I got mine done the dealer kept calling to tell me I needed to get this or that changed. They told me I needed a new belt. 😳 I told them the belt in it was only 4 hours old. I had just changed it when the frame finally broke. Mine was an 05 also.
Good idea. How much would that add to their cost? Instead of that how about units of government find an alternative to salt for keeping our roads safe. And how about we use less salt. And drive slower and more carefully. That would work for me but most people are in a hurry to get home so they can sit in front of the tube and drink a few brewskis.
@@cdoublejj a lot of people think that. Only Marine grade Stainless steel, but that isn't strong enough for car frames, its expensive, and you would have to use stainless screws, nuts, washers, rivets, including your tools would have to be stainless. if you put a regular metal screwdriver on stainless that metal will start to rust on the stainless.
Does there happen to be a nursing home/rehab facility just behind the camera of the outside shot where you grabbed the new frame? 5 years ago my Mom had to spend a couple weeks at a nursing home that happened to be next to a Toyota dealer and I would visit her just about every day after work. Early into her stay there I noticed a pile of something that looked like a bunch of old, grungy frames outside the garage door, oddly in the same spot you have those frames stacked and got to wondering if they were doing these swaps. After another day or so, the bay door was open when I got there and there was a red Taco in a bay that happened to be the exact same spot your bay is it! Over the next few afternoons I would see the truck get tore down, new frame built, then cab and bed on the new frame, kinda like catching bits and pieces of your video, but through the bay door from the lot next door. After seeing this and I think maybe parts of another swap, I told a friend who's Dad still has a red Taco 4x4 (IIRC, it's stick shift too!) that if his Dad even needed this done, it looked like that shop had a tech that was as experienced at this work as you appear to be!
wow ! lotsa work !. my 2018 try off road was side swiped before Christmas. over 14k Canadian in damage. insurance covered it. 6 weeks later still in shop, they tell they might have to order a new frame .a broken broken braket at rear driver side. got hit right in the gas cap erea before back wheel. took out my whole box , suspension etc.
When I look at the condition of this truck (body damage, bald tires etc) it is a shame to put a new frame on this truck. To me, it's like rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic.
And yes it's cheaper to total loss the truck. As soon as a veh comes back need frame replacement we will total loss the vehicle. Labor hrs needed are over usually over 97 labor hrs.
One of the first things I noticed is all the different people standing around from time to time watching you. Too busy to take the RO off the board but not too busy to watch you do the work and bug you. Always hated that...
I work for a dealership and I have a few minutes to chat with coworkers and observe their work, without passing up the board. Everyone has at least a couple minutes a day to do that.
WoodbyWolf Toyota was fudging the frame replacement inspections. Passing vehicles that really failed. Many than broke whilst owners were driving it. My broke. That’s what lead to the class action lawsuit.
Tech would too. At times I would do a "while we're in there" recommendation with a discounted labor rate since it's aprart. Simple stuff shocks/struts, water pump, belts, valve cover gaskets, radiator, etc
I'm impressed that it only took 16 minutes to replace the frame.

(Shocks, calipers, ect) they said i could buy them elsewhere and bring them in. New parts included the frame( of course), rear leaf springs, brake lines and fluid, lower control arms, all frame bushings and mounting hardware . I had them install new shocks and struts, calipers, rotors, pads, and a new 3 in liftkit. I did all the ball joints and in&out tierods after i got it home. All purchased from Amazon and advanced auto. Good luck
amazing how these guys are able to keep track and do this
I've been driving trucks and autos for nearly sixty years and have had a lot of people work on my vehicles (including myself).
Have not seen Ford or Chev do that and believe me their frames rust away as well.
always impressed by the skills of an experienced mechanic. resepct.
Thank you very much!
Now I know why it took so long for my packages to arrive from Amazon........ did you see how long that FED EX truck sat there without being worked on? LOL
Probably waiting for parts to arrive
FedEx doesn't deliver anything from Amazon
@@diablas100 Not anymore they don't. But we rarely do some of their work.
Such a great work! I wish to have someone like you doing this for my rusty 2003 Tacoma...
Thanks, I've done a 2003 before but that was a long time ago. Coverage for that year ranged ended.
Having mine done today. See you in a couple of weeks.
Me to on monday recall
How long do they keep it
How long did it take?
they said mine will be done mon it's been a week they put 600 on it for arms said i cant pick it up tell i pay. Tried ther best to get some money out off me. So i have to pay 630 to pick up Toyota would not cover it. Sucks gave me a 2020 reant car that was cool
Amazing that this truck is still worth doing all that to it.
My 2009 is waiting for the call to bring it in for a frame replacement ..was told 5 - 10 days for the work to be done
So it's a recall on Toyota to replace the frame. NICE!!!!
Is it a toyota recall? why did you pay for the replacement of the frame?
Just got my 06 Tacoma frame replaced no charge. 172,000 Kilometers rest of truck very good.
@@mrgearheadfromhell how long ago did toyota agree to replace your frame? who did you talk to?
They had checked the frame from the recall and said it was good first, then when I took it for state inspection they checked it again and said it had " qualifying perforations " and they had already sent pictures to Toyota and they said put a frame in it.
I told them they already looked at it and they said Toyota extended it, I'm sure glad they did; That invoice was just over $10,000.
So the dealer gave me a loaner 2018 Tacoma with like 239 miles on it, I put 500 on it in 3 days.
dude you make it look easy 😂. I'm about to do my first frame replacement next week, I had to wait like 5 months for the parts to come in.
I guess I need to take my 2010 in for a frame replacement inspection, because mine is way worse than this one, this one looks new compared to mine!
I heard that depending on the place...if yours isn't too bad, that they will just spray it down with rust protection...so if i were you, id wait until its very bad for a 100% frame replacement.
Last I heard the replacement is over now...
@@stevethomas8106 2005 to 2011 are covered for 12 years from Date of first use (DOFU) , so it depends on the when it was sold the first time. My 2007 DOFU was 11/24/07. I took it in for 3 inspections in the last 3 years. They found a hole last Friday during my final inspection with 2 weeks left on the extended warranty from Toyota , They ordered the frame and replaced it in 5 days . I pick it up tomorrow , the service dept. said no charge for anything. The dealership and Toyota also gave me a loaner vehicle to drive while the frame was being replaced. 2019 Highlander with 4k miles on it. They said the cost is $16k - $17k for each Tacoma.
@@Crab53 My TACO is an 03 and it was all done @ the dealer. They even did all the brake and fuel lines. From listening to others, they no longer do the lines or other related components. And they charge for any bolt that snaps off etc etc, if they're treating you that well, you're a lucky guy!!...
Nice! Only took 16 mins and 20 seconds! woot! Getting my done on my own dime next week. Will let Toyota know about this record time! :P
always wondered how much longer it would take to drop the engine with the frame... we usually keep them up in the truck with a engine support.. but honestly doesnt look like it added much if any time to your swap
Dan K. We also kept the engine and transmission in the body. We didn’t have to open the ac, coolent or unplug the harness. We would have the bed and body up in about 45 minutes.
@@Jc-ei7hz Where?
After doing over a 100 frames I could do it in my sleep. Thank you!!!!
Took longer to do that oil change on the Tahoe behind him!
😂
Did one in 9hrs...aligned and test driven. Left motor in cab as it was lifted off the frame.
Simply amazing 🙏🏼👍
Thank You!!!!
I gotta say, this is pretty amazing.
Guy I work with does these in 12-14 hours. Pays 40. This guy here is obviously a pro too
This is most likely a recall replacement. So it will cost him nothing. I just got mine done. It started falling apart when it was only 4 years old. By 13 years old the frame broke in the front. Toyota got billed $15,500 dollars for the replacement.
Anything touching the frame had to be replaced also under the recall.
12-14 hours ? lol....I know 2 people who had it done and checked progress and it was 5-6 work days....
Dean B That’s not in my area, it takes a minimum of four weeks just to get the spray treatments done.
Wow what a hard worker my hats off to you!
Thank you!!!!!!

Changed the whole frame in 16 minutes?
Did you not see the change of clothing? 16 hours
Wow timelapse! Impressive work on the mechanics part!
Thank You!!!!
Mechanic: “ Hold my beer.....”
I guess when you do literally hundreds of these, you get pretty good at it!
truck #100
how much flat rate time?
Richard John My truck listed in as $12500.00. (2003 double cab.)
I bought it from a dealer that got it at auction.
I paid around 12000.00 for it.
Honestly, Toyota should have just junked them and paid out.
They did for the first generation tacomas. but that ended years ago.
So much work. I bought my 2005 DC after Toyota had replaced the frame at 201,000 miles, then I got it oil sprayed and I spray Fluid Film inside the frame focusing on the riveted in plates
What ever you pay that mechanic... double it!!!
We wish, I’m about to do a frame tomorrow after it’s all done I’m going to ask for a raise, just got done doing valve seals had the entire engine apart took a few a days but it was done right. Most guys at my job was making 20-25 dollars an hour it’s a 40 hour job
why. if he is good at it should take 9 hours to change out frame. and pays 41
Una pregunta y las cañerías de freno como haces para remover cuando elevabas la cabina?
Shows how much money Toyota has to keep replacing frames....instead of fixing the issue on the front end...
If it was RAM...GM....or FORD the dealer would just tell the customer to FLOCK OFF.
@@mikefoehr235 It's a gigantic tax write off.
This only happened in that year model Tacoma
@@lookhector No it did not. they are still CURRENTLY doing them and have since '04. Total garbage, my 04 Chevy's frame is still 100% fine after 15 years of plowing snow..
@@lookhector false....been doing them since 1st gen...and now up to '17 model years...
I would never buy a newer model Toyota.
A lot of work for one man, even an apprentice would have neen a big help to that guy
This should be the Tech's resume.
Kudos on all that work. I'm exhausted just watching.....
Here hold this mug while I pour in the 🍺.
Thank You!!!
They should just start galvanizing their frames already.
Good idea. How much would that add to their cost? Instead of that how about units of government find an alternative to salt for keeping our roads safe. And how about we use less salt. And drive slower and more carefully. That would work for me but most people are in a hurry to get home so they can sit in front of the tube and drink a few brewskis.
you think galvanized doesn't rust?
@@76Bourne ....i did....
RUST PROOFING! Get your frame oil sprayed every year.
Not too sure but this was performed at a remote shop due to shop space, not a Toyota dealer.
This guy almost knows what he is doing. I could have helped him quite a bit by installing the wheels.
wow ! lotsa work !. my 2018 try off road was side swiped before Christmas. over 14k Canadian in damage. insurance covered it. 6 weeks later still in shop, they tell they might have to order a new frame .a broken broken braket at rear driver side. got hit right in the gas cap erea before back wheel. took out my whole box , suspension etc.
Next time someone asks me for help on a one man job, I'll tell them to watch this video
he loves his job so much.. i love ot too.
When I look at the condition of this truck (body damage, bald tires etc) it is a shame to put a new frame on this truck. To me, it's like rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic.
Frank P warranty covered it. They didn't make them right or coat them correctly from the factory. Like a 10-15 year warranty or something.
Lol
Exactly my thoughts. Bet the owner is going to sell it right after
If it still runs, drives then why junk it?
Thank you for sharing! How many pound engine leveler you are using? Is the one, which supports 1500 pound, enough?
Yes, that is correct.
That one fucking mud flap... LMAO
I have a 2003 regular cab 4x2 manual that I just purchased and didn't know about this until just now. Do I qualify for the frame replacement?
No that coverage ended around 2008-09
Makes you kind of wonder if it's just cheaper to replace the truck? That's a lot of labor
I think Toyota is doing it for free as part of a recall. You can see a stack of frames outside this shop.
And yes it's cheaper to total loss the truck. As soon as a veh comes back need frame replacement we will total loss the vehicle. Labor hrs needed are over usually over 97 labor hrs.
@@theadjuster6760 Damn. Thats over $7k for most any shop!
Where are you and will you do this on a 2004 Land Rover discovery??
Look at those bald tires. Owner really takes care of this thing.
lol you deserve a beer man, you literally did everything. awesome job!
Thanks!!!
Cuantas horas se demoro esa labor ?
I just dropped mine off yesterday for frame replacement. They said it would take up to 60 days. Not with this guy.
@Joshua Bullock ?
Your frame probably had a safety issue. Yes, it takes months for a new frame to come in.
WoodbyWolf 2007 check the VIN with a dealer. 10 mm hole minimum.
WoodbyWolf Toyota was fudging the frame replacement inspections. Passing vehicles that really failed. Many than broke whilst owners were driving it. My broke. That’s what lead to the class action lawsuit.
Good work! Looks like a long and tough job.
ThankYou!!!
what the.. I can barely put gas in my car
Awesome Mechanic.
Dude he even greased the drive line!
Its times like this I think gays have a real advantage
Wow can this be done to a forerunner? I need a new frame.
THE CAR DEALER PROBABLY MAKES GOOD MONEY REPLACING PARTS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL.
They made $1500 off of me for new exhaust system
Tech would too. At times I would do a "while we're in there" recommendation with a discounted labor rate since it's aprart. Simple stuff shocks/struts, water pump, belts, valve cover gaskets, radiator, etc
