What was the thing that used to be in art class when I was little, when you outline your face and you copy a picture but you only use black and grays and white and paint like the blocks of grays and blacks where the shadows would be? But it wasn't like shading or anything it was way more blocky?

Tonal grid painting, or black & white blocky grid painting? Not sure how you would search it, but I know what you mean. Good luck!
