    I haven't played MTG in years, but I could never forget Liliana lol. Great overview, thank you!

    I get the coolness factor around Warlocks but I ultimately prefer Wizards. I would rathe rely on my own wits and knowledge than having to depend on (mostly) malevolent beings.

      In DnD a lot of people who play a Sorcerer will dip into Warlock because the capstone for Sorcerer is part of the many things you get for just 2 levels into Warlock.

      Thats the cool thing about warlocks a lot of people dont get. Warlocks are not clerics. Their patrons cant take their power away again, even if they wanted to. You dont depend on them for your power after you've made your pact. They might hunt you, try to kill you, coerce you to do things or something, but they cant take away the powers they've given you after the pact and you will continue to get stronger and stronger as you progress, from your own accord. Patrons just plant a seed, but you grow and nurture it yourself. Clerics going against their gods would actually be fked though, because gods can give and take powers as they please.

      Funny thing is wizard + warlock is a match made in heaven.
      Warlock by design is the best class at reducing enemy saves. Wizards by design is the best class at applying save or else spells, due to more flexible spellbook and such. Put them together and u get a pretty evil pair of magic abusers that can go at it since level 1. You can do stuff like Hex+Bane for about 6 points of save debuff on average. Otherwise weak earlygame spells like tasha's heideous laugher suddenly become pretty strong antiboss tools.

      Huger of hadar is one of my favorite spells in the game I don't think wizards compare sorcers tho quickened spell with fireball comes close

    I think she’s more than a mere cambion. The devil Raphael seems to be cautious of Mizora (or at least of stepping on her toes). As you said, this could just be Larian playing up the power level of certain characters a bit, but I choose to think it may be more involved than that

      I did not have a playthrough where Raphael mentioned Mizora at all. Please let me know what happened.

      One thing to remember with devil pacts is they sometimes act as intermediaries to greater devils/patrons.

    Known warlocks in the Forgotten Realms
    Ammon Jerro, a male human warlock from Neverwinter Nights 2
    Farideh, a female tiefling warlock from the novels Brimstone Angels, Lesser Evils, The Adversary, Fire in the Blood, Ashes of the Tyrant and The Devil You Know (She became a warlock to protect her sister from becoming one)
    Japeth Donard, a male human fey pact warlock who drew his power from the archfey Neifon
    Wyll, a male human from Baldur's Gate 3

    As usual, very informative, and well done. As for Wyll, I consider him the weakest of the Companions relative to what can be built with a Half-Elf, which I did a partial playthrough as. From one poll I saw, he is understandably the least popular of the Companions, but next to Shadowheart, I consider him the most central to Act 1. It will be interesting to see if that continues to be the case.

    I always love Warlocks in a gameplay front mostly becauses developers just love making them the most OP range/spellcasters of the group.

    • @faselfasel2864
      @faselfasel2864 2 роки тому +3

      They dont necessarily make them deliberately OP, it just so happens that they have the most consistent and versatile toolset in the game. And the force damage from eldritch blast happens to be the least resisted damage type in the whole game.

      My dad loves playing Warlock on D&D Online most of his characters are or became warlocks as ya can multiclass and reincarnate (change classes ya have/had).

    I kind of like the dynamic of warlocks, sorcerers , and wizards. I look at it as barrowed power, naturally talented ,and hard work. They all have their appeals. In Wyll's case (semi spoiler?) I think he is extremely naïve to think that Mizora will just let him out of their pact. I'm sure it won't be that simple.

    Would we say that Catti-Brie was a Warlock with her relationship with the Fire Primordial (Maegera?) that’s sleeping beneath Gauntlgrym? It seems pretty clear she meets the definition, but she was only ever described in the novels as Wizardly I think.
    Or maybe it’s more grey area than I’m thinking because she was drawing on the arcane potential of the fire magic ring that Drizzt gave to her, which also happened to allow her to commune with the primordial and the plane of fire as a side benefit? idk

  • @C4MG1RL
    @C4MG1RL 2 роки тому +5

    While it may just be that she's pulling the double deception and is actually more than just a cambion. I, personally, think that she really just is a cambion and might just be power hungry herself. She saw an opportunity and Wyll was desperate and angry so she took it even though she probably wasn't actually prepared for it or maybe just didn't think the madlad would ever get into this much trouble and thus drag her with him.

    • @faselfasel2864
      @faselfasel2864 2 роки тому +2

      Cambions arent powerful enough to be patrons. The "weakest" warlock patrons that can sponsor a small following are CR 18 (Archomentals). Whatever she is, she is not a CR 6 Cambion.

    DnD nerd here! Love your vids! :D
    I'm excited to see what Larian decides to do with it.
    Theory: Feels well and beyond a cambion or devilish. Forming out of the ashes right after a slaughter gives off Malcanthet vibes. The vague terms and the eye fit too. Wyll is a prime target. The guy is "virtuous" and "well meaning".
    Regardless we'll see if they stick to lore. If you kill something from the lower or higher planes they simply reform in their home plane. They'll have to visit the home plane of the contract holder.

    Spoiler:
    Someone realized that there are certain aspects of Wyll that match up with people who are champions of Levistus. Like the fact that he has proficiency with rapiers. That paired with some ice magic leans towards a Levistus pact for Wyll, with Mizora being related to Levistus or a direct intermediary for him.

    A interpretation of a Warlock Patron could be a Master and Apprentice relationship. Kind of like the Sith Lords from Star Wars. While Patron themselves might not be on the level of a Demon Prince or Archfey yet. They are powerful and willing to teach you magic. You learn dark secrets and become more powerful(for a mortal). In return you help them become more powerful by being their agent on the material plane. Maybe towards the end of the campaign they ascend to Demon Princehood or Archfeyhood.

    Harsh words for our boi Wyll.
    As I understood it - Wyll was very tricked into becoming a Warlock, but he also approached it very realistically right away. 😎
    It's not like he is cowardly or insecure. He just knows that his abilities as a regular Human are very limited and that he needs every help he can get to become a Hero of true legend. The pact he has with Mizora seems to suggest he _"owes"_ her something now, which at the very least means to act as her personal bodyguard if the need for such a thing arises. 🤔
    Cambions are half-mortals so I dunno if they share the immortality of Devils in a sense that, they only die if slain in one of the 9 hells. But Mizora does not want to lose her access to the material realm most probably and this is where Wylls role as an additional defense mechanism for her bodys safety comes into play.
    Wyll wants to be a Man of honor. He could probably just forsake Mizora now and not lose the abilities he gained from her.
    She did not helped him out of empathy most probably but because she wanted to savour & relish in the slaughter, pain, fear & suffering he would bring to his sworn foes.
    Thats just how Devils tick. 😏 They do not help you cause they are nice. Even a goodhearted deed from a Devil is part of a grander, wicked & sadistical design.
    But Wyll is goodnatured Human and as such he could not bear to let *_"his Saviour"_* down.
    The one who turned him from a regular nobody into an able Man known as 'The Blade of Frontiers'. His gratitude is high, such as his honor. 💪👑
    Go forth Wyll - and slay these stinky, frogwartz looking Goblin skins!
