Thanks for sharing. I like that the mana costs vary in the deck. Cards that fit regardless of mana cost. The deck speaks to players that may not have the cards or budget for quicker expensive decks. I find alot of commander deck channels and sites are repetitive in the sense of the same cards going into some commander decks. I like seeing a fresher take on some commanders. I think you guys did that. You guys gave me some ideas for my nicol bolas deck. Thanks.

Hi Franko we actually decided to not go for a discard theme with this deck because we didn't want to build around the abilities of the commander this time. Nicol Bolas is simply too expensive to build around in our opinion.
Awesome! I know I'm only a "Pauper" patron yet that's my vote! I've figured there could be pure tribal, which would not be too powerful; steal stuff, kind of like this build; and probably various combo builds. I'd be happy to brainstorm any of those options (as I might try to build them all or set it up so I can change out depending on play group) with anyone :)

At the risk of starting a gender debate on a 25000 year old elder dragon, AFAIK, Nicol Bolas is most defintiely a "He", not an "It", and has been referenced as such throughout Magic's storylines, including that of Hour of Devastation. (The narrator seems to switch between the two at some point, which sounds very strange..) Other than that, That's a spicy damn deck tech. definitely using this as a base for my Supervillain Bolas Commander deck.
Well the locust god is would be too similar to our Niv-Mizzet deck which we just made so probably not for that one. But the other two are good contenders ;).

Budget MTG Decks usually people think about a tribal Merfolk deck, but I think the other version of Sygg (the one called Sygg, River Guide) is much better for that purpose. In a Sygg, River Cutthroat deck I'd put a lot of unblockable creatures and synergies such as ninjas to take advantage of Sygg's ability to draw cards. That's just my opinion, of course. I think there are a lot of options avaliable. Sygg's ability allows one to go aggressive with unblockable creatures or go control and draw a lot of cards. That is why I love Sygg so much!
I would love to add Sensei's Divining Top and Vedalken Orrery, maybe cyclonic Rift and or Vandalblast. Well definitely would love to add the 1st 2 but your deck looks good and I'm not sure where to fit them. Also I love your NB Planeswalker idea.

I tried to add cyclonic Rift and Nicol Bolas Planeswalker but since I can only play in a meta full of very tuned decks piloted by much more experienced players I must watch very careful the mana curve. I already swapped Sol ring for Cruel Ultimatum and would like to include Felwar Stone or Manalith. I swapped Merciless Executioner for Mirage Mirror. I do enjoy meddling with these decks but have had much less success building from scratch. Thank you very much for this great deck. I can't find much room to change it as I don't want to screw it up like I have others (i.e. my C17 Dragon deck mess)

Dark Intimations does not return to your hand if you play a Bolas Planeswalker. It's just exiled from the Graveyard as a "cost" for that increase in Loyalty.
The legend rule only applies to your side. Each player can have a copy of the legendary creature (or planeswalker for that matter) on their side of the battlefield.

Perhaps this suggestion has already been made, but anyway, here it is : maybe, instead of imposing yourselves to put in your decks cards strictly under a dollar in price, you could replace this condition with something like "max 60 dollars per deck not including the commander" ? This would allow you to include great cards like Sol Ring, Command Tower, Propaganda and so on, which don't cost a lot, but bring some more power/synergy to your decks. Hi Alexandre, bedankt voor je suggestie ;). We have actually thought very much about our restriction and found that putting a $60 cap on decks makes them much more expensive (our decks cost an average of $35) and makes it easy to put in very expensive cards and just add tutors or dig cards to get to them and win the game. Which is not a lot of fun. Making sure all the cards are cheap makes the decks more balanced and not reliant on finding the one $30 card which the deck is built around. Plus these decks can also be seen as a starting out point from which people can upgrade and add expensive cards at their own leisure.
isn't there a rule that says that we can only generate Mana in our commander's identity? And that any Mana generated in other colors become immediately colorless? Genuinely asking
This rule ("Rule 4") was removed in the January 2016 Commander rules/ban update announcement: mtgcommander.net/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18057 You can now produce any color of mana that any source could normally provide - there are no longer rules dictating wha color mana you can produce. City of Brass can once again tap for all 5 colors; Fellwar Stone can produce any color of mana a land an opponent control's could produce; the list goes on.
So to do an update and upgrades on this deck for me. Right now it's my favorite EDH deck, but it needs a lot of upgrades and lacks a clear win con. First off my thoughts. This deck thrives in card advantage and card draw. It needs both reliquary tower and thought vessel. With that said it likes game of 1v1 or pods of 4-5. Anymore than 5 and you don't have enough resources to answer everyone's cards. Pods of 3 I find myself focusing on one person and not getting enough value out of cards like syphon mind or board wipes. There is A LOT of sorcery speed cards and this being a control deck mostly needs instant speed reactions, sub in leyline of anticipation. With the instant speed stuff take out single target removal spells (tragic slip) and insert more counter spells to protect your board. You're not worried about a big creature or two hitting board because of your clones/steal spells, you actually want them to, and if it gets out of hand board wipe. So insert more board wipes/counterspells (swan song, counterspell, dispel, negate, swerve/redirect, counterflux is the best counterspell in the deck save it for your win con or to stop someone else's) in place of single removal spells. I would include hour of devastation for flavor, upgrade to cyclonic rift, and whatever else you really like/have. Land drops are hugely important in this deck bc it's mana hungry so include ancient excavation for cycling and card selection late game and thaumatic compass for finding your lands. On the point of lands this is where biggest upgrade lays; include the check lands, zendikar have lands, HoD cycle dual lands, reveal lands, and if you have the budget which I don't shock lands. It's really important early game to have color access and not ETB tapped to play control spells and your ramp cards. You want seven mana turn 4. Like I said earlier the main theme of this deck is card advantage and forcing your opponents to discard is huge. With them discarding you get access to their creatures and spells so rakdos charm is kinda irrelevant. If you are concerned with gy hate sub in bojuka bog and save the spell slot for something else. Upgrade diabolic tutor to demonic or proxy it if you don't have the budget and your play group let's you. For tutors also include muddle the mixture (can find your win cons like cyclonic rift and torment of hailfire) or save it as a counterspell. Praetors grasp is also a win con if you know your playgroup has something like ulamog or blightsteel. It's easily the best tutor in this deck and no one ever sees it coming the first game you play. Include the planeswalkers nicol Bolas and the god pharoah variations (both win cons) don't bother with the deceiver he's too expensive and not enough bang for buck. I personally include assault suit in my deck for a really fun interaction with Bolas the creature. Cyclonic rift bouncing everyone's board then playing Bolas and equipping him and having everyone attack each other with him to rid everyone's hand in one turn. Oh yeah include consuming aberration as a win con after you've forced everyone to discard. Take out cruel ultimatum for torment of hailfire. Does similar thing but it hits everyone and becomes a win con late game.
With these upgrades my playgroup hates me and it becomes a game of archenemy! Lol bonus points for including archenemy cards or Planechase. Would recommend both if your playgroup is up for it.

I have played this deck 12 times now and it is the slowest least efective deck I have played recently. I find it ironic that the cost is slightly more than the mrsp for an edh precon as it plays similar to one before it gets the necessary upgrades.
Hi William, we are sorry to hear that. The deck is supposed to be slow, but not ineffective. Despite our many hours of playtesting (we test each deck around 50 times against multiple different decks) this one might not give you the experience you were looking for. Have you tried any of our other decks?
Budget MTG Decks no this was the only one. I have been trying to save money to build Mairisil, The Pretender or Animar Soul of Elements (w Morphs). Since I have learned that mashing a bunch of cheap cards together does seem to do well in the only playgroup I have access to I will need to collect better cards. I find it hard to find a use for Nicol Bolas as there are so many better and lower CMC discard spells, and commanders that tap to take control which have lower CMC. I think he is a cute card but that is about all he is. I believe Counterspell to be the best card in this deck although I did not draw it once.
To be honest in most games we played we didn't even cast Nicol Bolas. This is one of the few decks we have which does not have synergy with the commander and the deck should do fine without him on the board. I just tried this deck in 3 1v1 games ahainst the same opponent and it seems slow and expensive. In 1 game by turn 5 he had 10 lands that each tapped for 2 and an extensive field. I had a Signet, 5 lands, and 1 creature, with a hand full of cards that I could only cast 1 per turn. If I cast a creature I would not be able to counter. There should be some way to achieve some feeling of acomplishment after a game without spending $1,000. At this point I have no care to win a game but just to feel like I did more than just take 1 creature or destroyed 1 or hit once for 5. I have a Sliver deck that I had spent $100+ easy for that recently won by taking a Voltron deck's commander that had just killed a player then I finished the table with it. That used Amoebid Changeling and Sliver Hivelord. Maybe I am missing something in your deck. Think I need to better learn strategy or something idk.
Hi William, this is a slow control deck. The idea is that you don't play stuff in the beginning but counter and/or destroy your opponent's early threats. Then late game you take over their win conditions and beat them with their own deck. We've had loads of success and great times piloting this deck in multiplayer games but recognize that it won't be perfect in every match up. Perhaps give it more than 3 games and see if the problems persist?

This would allow you to include great cards like Sol Ring, Command Tower, Propaganda and so on, which don't cost a lot, but bring some more power/synergy to your decks.

Hi Alexandre, bedankt voor je suggestie ;). We have actually thought very much about our restriction and found that putting a $60 cap on decks makes them much more expensive (our decks cost an average of $35) and makes it easy to put in very expensive cards and just add tutors or dig cards to get to them and win the game. Which is not a lot of fun. Making sure all the cards are cheap makes the decks more balanced and not reliant on finding the one $30 card which the deck is built around. Plus these decks can also be seen as a starting out point from which people can upgrade and add expensive cards at their own leisure.

No you cannot. You commander must always be a Legendary Creature. So you could replace it with Nicol Bolas, the Ravager if you like.

This rule ("Rule 4") was removed in the January 2016 Commander rules/ban update announcement: mtgcommander.net/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18057
You can now produce any color of mana that any source could normally provide - there are no longer rules dictating wha color mana you can produce. City of Brass can once again tap for all 5 colors; Fellwar Stone can produce any color of mana a land an opponent control's could produce; the list goes on.

So to do an update and upgrades on this deck for me. Right now it's my favorite EDH deck, but it needs a lot of upgrades and lacks a clear win con. First off my thoughts. This deck thrives in card advantage and card draw. It needs both reliquary tower and thought vessel. With that said it likes game of 1v1 or pods of 4-5. Anymore than 5 and you don't have enough resources to answer everyone's cards. Pods of 3 I find myself focusing on one person and not getting enough value out of cards like syphon mind or board wipes. There is A LOT of sorcery speed cards and this being a control deck mostly needs instant speed reactions, sub in leyline of anticipation. With the instant speed stuff take out single target removal spells (tragic slip) and insert more counter spells to protect your board. You're not worried about a big creature or two hitting board because of your clones/steal spells, you actually want them to, and if it gets out of hand board wipe. So insert more board wipes/counterspells (swan song, counterspell, dispel, negate, swerve/redirect, counterflux is the best counterspell in the deck save it for your win con or to stop someone else's) in place of single removal spells. I would include hour of devastation for flavor, upgrade to cyclonic rift, and whatever else you really like/have. Land drops are hugely important in this deck bc it's mana hungry so include ancient excavation for cycling and card selection late game and thaumatic compass for finding your lands. On the point of lands this is where biggest upgrade lays; include the check lands, zendikar have lands, HoD cycle dual lands, reveal lands, and if you have the budget which I don't shock lands. It's really important early game to have color access and not ETB tapped to play control spells and your ramp cards. You want seven mana turn 4. Like I said earlier the main theme of this deck is card advantage and forcing your opponents to discard is huge. With them discarding you get access to their creatures and spells so rakdos charm is kinda irrelevant. If you are concerned with gy hate sub in bojuka bog and save the spell slot for something else. Upgrade diabolic tutor to demonic or proxy it if you don't have the budget and your play group let's you. For tutors also include muddle the mixture (can find your win cons like cyclonic rift and torment of hailfire) or save it as a counterspell. Praetors grasp is also a win con if you know your playgroup has something like ulamog or blightsteel. It's easily the best tutor in this deck and no one ever sees it coming the first game you play. Include the planeswalkers nicol Bolas and the god pharoah variations (both win cons) don't bother with the deceiver he's too expensive and not enough bang for buck. I personally include assault suit in my deck for a really fun interaction with Bolas the creature. Cyclonic rift bouncing everyone's board then playing Bolas and equipping him and having everyone attack each other with him to rid everyone's hand in one turn. Oh yeah include consuming aberration as a win con after you've forced everyone to discard. Take out cruel ultimatum for torment of hailfire. Does similar thing but it hits everyone and becomes a win con late game.
With these upgrades my playgroup hates me and it becomes a game of archenemy! Lol bonus points for including archenemy cards or Planechase. Would recommend both if your playgroup is up for it.

I have played this deck 12 times now and it is the slowest least efective deck I have played recently. I find it ironic that the cost is slightly more than the mrsp for an edh precon as it plays similar to one before it gets the necessary upgrades.
Hi William, we are sorry to hear that. The deck is supposed to be slow, but not ineffective. Despite our many hours of playtesting (we test each deck around 50 times against multiple different decks) this one might not give you the experience you were looking for. Have you tried any of our other decks?
Budget MTG Decks no this was the only one. I have been trying to save money to build Mairisil, The Pretender or Animar Soul of Elements (w Morphs). Since I have learned that mashing a bunch of cheap cards together does seem to do well in the only playgroup I have access to I will need to collect better cards. I find it hard to find a use for Nicol Bolas as there are so many better and lower CMC discard spells, and commanders that tap to take control which have lower CMC. I think he is a cute card but that is about all he is. I believe Counterspell to be the best card in this deck although I did not draw it once.
To be honest in most games we played we didn't even cast Nicol Bolas. This is one of the few decks we have which does not have synergy with the commander and the deck should do fine without him on the board. I just tried this deck in 3 1v1 games ahainst the same opponent and it seems slow and expensive. In 1 game by turn 5 he had 10 lands that each tapped for 2 and an extensive field. I had a Signet, 5 lands, and 1 creature, with a hand full of cards that I could only cast 1 per turn. If I cast a creature I would not be able to counter. There should be some way to achieve some feeling of acomplishment after a game without spending $1,000. At this point I have no care to win a game but just to feel like I did more than just take 1 creature or destroyed 1 or hit once for 5. I have a Sliver deck that I had spent $100+ easy for that recently won by taking a Voltron deck's commander that had just killed a player then I finished the table with it. That used Amoebid Changeling and Sliver Hivelord. Maybe I am missing something in your deck. Think I need to better learn strategy or something idk.
Hi William, this is a slow control deck. The idea is that you don't play stuff in the beginning but counter and/or destroy your opponent's early threats. Then late game you take over their win conditions and beat them with their own deck. We've had loads of success and great times piloting this deck in multiplayer games but recognize that it won't be perfect in every match up. Perhaps give it more than 3 games and see if the problems persist?
