The father's temper led to frequent outbursts towards his wife and occasionally towards the young Ritsu. Though a child, Ritsu was still affected by his father's violent outbursts. His mother tried her best to protect Ritsu from her husband, yet her attempts were often in vain. Ritsu's mother desperately sought a way out, hoping to provide a better life for her son, free from her husband’s grasp. In her attempt to flee, her husband seized Ritsu and held him as a hostage to prevent her from leaving. However, driven by the desperate need to protect Ritsu, his mother grabbed a knife and stabbed her husband to ensure her son's escape. The father's grip loosened, giving Ritsu the chance to slip away. The memory still vivid in his mind, Ritsu remembers the trembling hands of his mother as she urged him to flee. At just five years old, Ritsu struggled to understand the events unfolding around him. The noise of the “fight” attracted the attention of the neighbors, leading to the authorities being called. As a result, Ritsu's mother was taken into custody, charged with the murder of her husband. Despite being taken in by the kind neighbors, Ritsu, who struggled to comprehend the situation, remained patiently by the door, awaiting the return of his mother. The sight tugged at the neighbors’ hearts, leaving them helpless. They tried to urge him away from the door with various toys they had purchased, but their efforts were useless. Ritsu couldn’t help but feel out of place and uneasy under his neighbors’ care. The feeling of not belonging consumed the young boy. Seeing the peace and enjoyment when his neighbors and their children bonded, a pang of longing welled up within him, wishing for a similar family. Yet, no such thing seemed to exist for Ritsu. Ritsu often retreated to the solitude of his room, finding comfort in the glow of the stars. They provided a glimmer of comfort to him, giving him bittersweet memories of the days when he anxiously waited by the door for his mother's return. Truthfully, he didn’t like the dark, he was scared of it. Yet the glow of the stars kept him company. As Ritsu matured, he gradually came to understand the complexities of his family situation. Though his mother was labeled a criminal for her actions, Ritsu firmly believed in the validity of her reasons. His guardians (neighbors) were kind enough to arrange for Ritsu to visit his mother in prison during visiting hours. During those precious moments together, Ritsu would excitedly recount his daily experiences, basking in the warmth of his mother's embrace as she held her unrecognizable son. During some visits, when the time came to an end, Ritsu would frequently tear up and sob, desperate to remain with his mother. Alas, they were torn apart, left to wait for the next reunion. Learning that his mother was actively engaging in parenting classes to prepare for life outside prison, Ritsu determined that he had to become self-sufficient. He understood that he would need to learn how to care for himself in preparation for her release. Going to school was a source of misery for Ritsu, as he became the target of intense bullying due to the crimes associated with his mother. Fears circulated around him, with classmates whispering that Ritsu was likely to carry out violent acts due to his genetics to his mother. Ritsu had no friends, isolated and forced to seek refuge in bathroom stalls to escape his schoolmates. But Ritsu stubbornly held onto the belief that his peers were not inherently bad; they must have their reasons for acting the way they did.
