Small Brain: Archfey are, like, fey that are named Archibald. Normal Brain: Archfey are elite, powerful, ancient fey beings. Big Brain: Archfey are fey creatures that are arch-shaped.
@Jamie Adams lol I just thought of a town in the feywild where everyone in town transitions every time they go through a door way but because the feywild is such a chaotic place everyone is just like yeah we're just gender fluid it's fine and goes about their days and it could be like a holy city for elves since being there makes them more like Corellon that would be a really fun bit of regional lore and the city could be presided over by that arch fae
Nah nah nah. It's the fey. Permit reads I do what I want except on the second Tuesday of every third leap year or if a man named Sue sacrifices a three-eyed goat on the fourth new moon and invokes the ancient pact with House Duvain which requires 13 gallons of milk produced by cows born in any new moon of spring but only within the last 13 months, gathered by the hands of a virgin milk maid wearing purple lederhosen whose name is not Natasha or Sorscha, or when told otherwise by the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, or anyone named Steve who owns a pet rock.
I love Eberron's treatment of Archfey and the feywild. Archfey are the embodiment of the most powerful story archetypes throughout history. The wicked witch who lives in the woods. The prince with a frozen heart. The prince of all things forgotten and unloved. The Harvest king whose power grows and wilts with the seasons. And it makes it so easy to add new fey. What's a new story that's being told all over? For example, stories of magic schools might lead to an archfey known as the Arcane Headmaster/Mistress who embodies the Wise Old One archetype. An amalgamation of Gandalf/Dumbledore/Yoda and inhabits all those types of stories.
wow that's really cool, I didn't know about that. That must make it pretty easy to implement a new patron for any archfey warlock because you can just come up with a folk tale to fit their general concept
@@sinistertwister686 if ya want another small twist on this look at the fey of amular kingdom reckoning. The fey are undying but in two ways. They can not die from natural causes only violence or magic and their myths are never dying their stories are always happening like they are stuck in a time loop not recreating them but actually happening repeatedly. So if a character dies for some unknown reason then other feys do a challenge to be that character for that story. They character's name becomes their new name and their title and whenever the story starts again they always heed the call or are replaced so the story keeps going. Theyre dying as a culture do to the stories stopping and the winter court stopping their stories to try and take over the world with an undying army of fey. So the archfey in this sense would be the characters in the story thar embody their character fully and always heed the call no matter how many times theyve completed it.
I'm currently DMing for a warlock with an Archfey patron, and I love it! The terms of her warlock pact range from "Live joyfully and delightfully" to "Always show kindness to birds"-I can't think of any other patron type who'd be both so free & so specific in what they ask of their warlocks.
Oberon and Titania would be quite famous examples. The Fairy Queen is a common archetype, eg as the Patron of the knights in the Faerie Queene or the adversary in the ballad of Tam Lin. The Arthurian Lady of the Lake probably qualifies.
Fae of that level should be considered equal to the gods honestly, maybe they are a little less powerful but they are drastically more likely to intervene
Critical Role's examples of Archfey are very telling. The Traveler is friendly and mischievous, but he still has a very detached nature that can be off-putting. Then there's Morrigan, Fearne's Nana, who is literally a hag and is quite a powerful archfey in her own right. She's the reason Fearne is a perfect dark fairycore satyr.
And don't forget Ira Wendagoth, the Nightmare King, who tortures people, ruins lives and throws spanners into the works of plans centuries in the making because he wants a bit of fun.
Technically Morrigan isn't an Archfey, Ryn made a specific distinction about her being something different That being said, the fact that the other courts respect/fear her so much is very telling
@@Micaerys I mean, that's probably a different interpretation by CR either ingame or rulewise (I'm not that far in season 3 yet) But since Baba Yaga is both a hag AND an archfey, I wouldn't see why Morrigan isn't an archfey as well. Well, unless Baba Yaga is not a real hag and just related to them. (And all/most hags are (dark) fey, except Night Hags, which are fiends)
@@MikaeruDaiTenshi Don't worry, I won't make spoilers. As far as I understand it there are several fey that are powerful but only some of them are technically archfey, maybe it's based on their politics (about having their own magical court or domain to rule and all that). I bet even without the title Morri scares the shit out of many Archfey About Baba Yaga... She's probably like the proto hag. She's something unique compared to the rest. And probably the night hags were in the past fey as well, and they just transformed when they went to the lower planes. In fact, one of them in 5e, Granny Nightshade, seems to have recovered the fey condition after she travels to the Feywild to join a particularly powerful coven!
My archfey patron was called Lord Asrial. The “lord” title was just for respect, he didn’t actually hold any land. It was his job, in our setting, to decide who or what goes in and out of feywild. So he protected feywild from the other planes, and the other planes from feywild. He was very no-nonsense, given that he had to deal with tricky fey all the time, and I was his only warlock, but he was pretty cool. He had two forms, one was a man, one was a unicorn.
My dearest D&D PC is an archfey glamour bard. Yes, you read that correctly. Due to... complicated backstory reasons, he's been exiled from his own Winter Court and stripped of most of his power (in order to fit in with the party). The setting we're playing in is historically distrustful of fey at best and openly hostile at worst, so he's doing his best to pass himself off as an odd-looking elf to the party and npcs alike. So far, it's working. He's having a terrible time reconciling with the difference in worlds and his sudden lack of power but it's been super interesting to roleplay! Hard mode: he's physically incapable of lying. He can dance all around the truth, but a straight up untruth makes him choke. Literally.
In older editions a handful of the top archfey were gods in their own right. Called Sylvan gods. Which I think is appropriate. In 5e it is not entirely clear what they are.
Yeah the fae should be considered comparable to the celestial and infernal courts. Also crucially they aren't opposed in the same way as those ones, they are at war but like 🎉war🎉 not 💀war💀they are bored not mad ya feel They are the world but turned up to 200 and given 7 shots of espresso and like a little crack
I mean, this is still true for 5e. Titania, Oberon are for example listed as archfey, who are of the Seelie Court which is considered a pantheon of deities of the fey. So Titania and Oberan are deities. Deities are divine beings of great power. Now, the definition of divine beings and gods is far more complicated, considering that you have greater gods, lesser gods, demigods, which are considered true deities because they all have a portfolio. (and a couple others) While Archfiends (Archdevils and Demon Lords) are considered deities (or at least the most powerful of them) but archfiend don't possess a portfolio. Uhm, yea, it's a lot. And I think way too much to philosophise about here. Anyhow, Archfey have nearly god-like powers (which again is kinda hard to define)
@@MikaeruDaiTenshi Might be wrong, but I don’t think a single sourcebook in 4e or 5e, calls Titania a deity. Am pretty sure that they “only” list her as an archfey and a Warlock patron. But 5e sourcebooks are also very quiet about Archfey in general. In earlier editions however, she was clearly listed as both a greater deity and the leader of her own pantheon. So if I was the DM, I would still go with that. But I am unsure about the official ruling on the subject.
There is one archfey that is, surprisingly, human. And I never thought of using her as an Archfey Patron, but it could give some rather unique roleplay: Tasha.
This video made me think up a new dnd character concept; - An Archfey warlock patron who’s doing the whole patron thing for the first time and lost contact with their warlock, now taking on “human” form to go find them - Can be classified as a sorcerer - Hides the true strength of their magic, very Chaotic Neutral but also cares deeply about their warlock’s wellbeing - Can also be hiding their magic because a parent in the Fae Realm wouldn’t approve of them mingling with beings of the Material Plane (like how it went in A Court of Fey and Flowers with the Lords of the Wing and their grandfather) - A player in a life or death situation talking about the disguise: “Take. It. Off!” - The Archfey: “I. Would. Rather. Die.” - If they reveal themselves they could be called back to the Feywild and stripped of their noble title, stripped of their powers, and then they can’t help anybody.

“Powerful fey that have just lived long enough to count” I love the idea of a super meta interpretation of this as the super literal definition and there being a fourth wall breaking satyr toddler whose explanation of being an arch fey is just that he can count.
The battle of heart spire in aerois has got to go down as the coolest party vs archfey encounter, maybe ever. It was less a battle , and more of a time sensitive very high stakes social encounter, where the queen of hearts spire had 3 rules that would magically be enforced on everyone, and the party had to work around those rules to save the girlfriend of one of the characters, who was dying from a curse . It was so epic
IDK what it is but your hair looks really good in this style. Also, thaaaaank you for this, I've been working on a campaign where I'm a paid DM and its unique nature made it really hard to come up with a caste that Archfey could fit quite well.
i have this gym bro archfey as a patron for my himbo, accidental warlock; they were at the same party and hit it off when the patron said something about being workout buddies and like "we can work out together and ill give you super dope powers, just shake my hand" and my warlock was like haha yeah, lets get buff, just thinking he was joking abt the powers so the next morning when he woke up with warlock powers and was so confused because he had no idea that it was a pact that they made the night before! so they just workout together and have a sweet bro-mance and i adore this warlock so much
One of my first character was a fey warlock who’s patron was like kinda a spirit librarian all avatar last airbender style and it was super fun to play / rp
Had a Fey-bound Warlock Dorf in 4e. In Epic, went Archfey. Didn't have a named Patron up until that point. The character also liked breaking rules if he thought the rules were unfair/ not right. Later on, thanks in part to a time travelling npc, he set himself up as his own patron... because why not.
I tend to explain the Arch Fey like the Eldest from Pathfinder campaign setting, super powerful beings from the first world/Fey realm that can shape the realm around them on a whim.
In one of my games I play a trickery cleric/fey wanderer ranger fairy who's whole deal is they are an archfey who was cast out of the wilds for trying to start their own court the Court of Revelry. It's been fun messing with my own party members :)
My warlock has an archfey patron! Her mom (Saoirse's dad was a bard of midling fame) made a pact with her because while her twin is indistinguishable from a member of fae, Saoirse herself is indistinguishable from your average half elf (excluding aging. Nobody know how old they are.) Her mom is pretty hands off. But does essentially use her to run errands. Basically, face this bbeg, solve this mystery, pick up these groceries.... You know the kinda stuff you make a teen who just started driving responsible for.
For a scary look at the fey in a RPG setting, take a look at the Dresden Files novels and RPG books.... it very heavily interacts with the fey and shows off just how terrifying they can be, and how much like a dragon from shadowrun, they're never to be trusted or dealt with.
I'm making a dnd character set that's just various incarnations of a chosen one by Dionysus pretending to be anything and i think an archfey would be a perfect fit for my next character TY
Two of my current DND characters have archfey patrons. One is my barbarian, which is multi classed into it for RP reasons. The other is my Yuan-ti sorcerer that was adopted as an egg by an archfey, and yes, she is multi classed into warlock for mostly RP reasons. Edited to make it easier to read.
They are incredibly powerful, older than you can understand and they have the capacity for every human emotion. Also they can't be neatly divided into good or evil. Jareth from Labyrinth is a good example, So is Ashling's patron- The Lady of the Soil.
An archfay is a fay that can only exist in arch shaped structures like under aqueducts, in rounded-top doors, under vaults or bridges or under the occasional reclined tree branch
My Tiefling Bard who became a Warlock by failing to read all the Terms and Conditions when purchasing her mandolin from the Archfey that is now her patron is not going to be happy knowing this... Or maybe she might. Who knows?
My default explanation is only mildly helpful but it's that they're the Feywild equivalent of archdevils, archdemons, and archangels...on equal footing with them. Instead of being from the Great Wheel they are from the Feywild.
In the game I currently run, the “gods” are Greek-style entities native to the prime material plane. Fey and other otherworldly entities are intrinsically tied to other realms, so their power here is limited in comparison to that if the local gods, which is why they are more like warlock patrons. In their own realms, the arch fey are the gods.
I just made my archfey cats, like regular cats. But leaning into the 9 lives thing of going from mundane cats in their first life to full Wonderland Cheshire fey cat in their 9th life
I'm my mind archfey were things like the deku tree from legend of zelda or the white lady, or any of the questing beasts of fillory ( the magicians series), the alicorn and extremely powerful unicorns in mlpfim and stuff on that level I could also see extremely old and powerful druids becoming archefey ether due to a blessing from the gods like pan or sacrificing there physical form protecting it being brought back as a spirit to be able to watch over it in perpetuity
My brother, who reads the Monster Hunter books, and I, who plays DnD, once tried to discuss archfey. Will got very confused when I told him archfey aren’t known for eating people.
A LOT of stuff in the dnd books is vague and I find that frustrating. You would like to know more specifics of something - how does lycanthropy work, what kind of potions can you make, what are arcfey, etc - and the book goes “we encourage you to come up with your own ideas!” Bro if I wanted to come up with my own ideas I wouldn’t have paid $50 for your book about it.
This is why I own so many more third party D&D supplements than actual D&D sourcebooks, to be honest. You can just get the core three (PHB, DMG, MM) and then supplement with WAY more helpful material from publishers who are actually trying to meet DMs' needs.
@@GinnyDi I'm going down the same route slowly yet surely. Sometimes being vague is nice because I can fill the blanks in a way to suit the needs and expectations of the table, and well as the campaign I am interested in running, but I don't buy rule books for writing prompts I buy them for guidelines and mechanics deeper than "roll a die and see how you feel about it." For instance, if I understand correctly the Strixhaven book has some wacky magical sport but playing it just boils down to "yeah dawg roll a skill check and whoever rolls higher wins." That is a letdown.
So, in one of the campaigns i was playing in, me and another player actually encountered an archfey in the wild. The party is walking in the woods and I notice my fellow rogue being distracted by this crystal dragonfly. We both follow it and meet this Archfey, but only the other rogue actually knows what it is. So she tells her MY character's name to get the heat off her 😂. The archfey asked if i wanted to trade names, and my guy's dumbass was like, "nah, I kinda like my name. There's nothing really you could offer me that I need, so bye." And thats how we not only survived but also got a way of contacting an archfey should the need arise.
I mean, her name is Diadne and she has her own whole character and story that is more than just "Ginny Di, plopped into a fey setting," but... KINDA, YEAH!
Archfey in my world are Fey that pacted with Prime Elemental gods, Then their Court is pacted to them. Making every single resident of their court a Warlock. The Archfey' determines what evocations their residents have. If the Prime Elemental is killed though it does sever the link and require a new pact to be formed.
Idea for an arch fey patreon: cuz of time dilation they aren't very with the times. While the settings is a bit more modern they are still caught in the romance of classic fantasy, for instance. Or maybe they use outdated slang, a la the 90s Vs now
It makes sense they would be equivalent to demon princes or celestials. As strong as you can get short of divinity. Representative of neutrality versus the good and evil beings. So their motivations and goals are not readily apparent.
I take alot of insperation from Celtic fairies xD; with my Nan being Irish American she used to warn me about the Fairies often and not to piss them off
Same as a Noble Genie, the best example is Calim was the noble djinni lord who founded the Calim Empire in what is now Calimshan. As in the Title no a personality, Even a Djinn can be Evil.
I'm in the setting up stage of dm'ing wild beyond the witchlight for my buddy and girlfriend. I know what kind of people they are. I'm fairly certain they're gonna try and fight Zybilna and if you've seen the stat block or know who that is you know how bad of an idea it is for people who are gonna be at best level 11 to even remotely consider that idea.
I mean the fae should be able yo do anything a god can do pretty much, at least some member of the fae should have any power that some god has, it doesn't need to be all of them but at least someone has to
I have one archfey character and I like keeping everything surrounding the archfey kinda vague, all you know is that despite this fey being a half fiend they are highly supported by fellow archfey, but the lowfey? They do not respect them, not one bit, and nobody understands why or how they got to their position

Titania, Oberon, Pan, Mab, Puck, the Green Man, Green Knight, and the Lady of the Lake can all be Arch Fey.
i have this gym bro archfey as a patron for my himbo, accidental warlock; they were at the same party and hit it off when the patron said something about being workout buddies and like "we can work out together and ill give you super dope powers, just shake my hand" and my warlock was like haha yeah, lets get buff, just thinking he was joking abt the powers so the next morning when he woke up with warlock powers and was so confused because he had no idea that it was a pact that they made the night before! so they just workout together and have a sweet bro-mance and i adore this warlock so much
One of my first character was a fey warlock who’s patron was like kinda a spirit librarian all avatar last airbender style and it was super fun to play / rp
I always knew you were an Archfey Ginny!
Oh that is awesome
What music are you using for this? It's so calming
It's music from Borough Bound's upcoming album Ithivellia!
I tend to explain the Arch Fey like the Eldest from Pathfinder campaign setting, super powerful beings from the first world/Fey realm that can shape the realm around them on a whim.
Recently in my games I developed an Archfey based on the Wild Hunt mythos. Very proud of it so far
Nobody know how old they are.)
Her mom is pretty hands off.
Honestly, I just love the idea of archfey essentially being "mystical location has gained an Ego"
Thank you for the information and the inspiration.
Archfey are so much fun to use as a GM.
Ginny out here on a Phineas Flynn type beat
An archfay is a fay that can only exist in arch shaped structures like under aqueducts, in rounded-top doors, under vaults or bridges or under the occasional reclined tree branch
Every time i hear fey or archfey i always think of the anime Ancient Magus Bride.
She’s got that Phinease and Ferb fit
That was helpful, so thank you.
My Tiefling Bard who became a Warlock by failing to read all the Terms and Conditions when purchasing her mandolin from the Archfey that is now her patron is not going to be happy knowing this...
Or maybe she might. Who knows?
Now I want to play a noble character who's experience with courtly intrigue comes exclusively from being raised by an archfey.
My default explanation is only mildly helpful but it's that they're the Feywild equivalent of archdevils, archdemons, and archangels...on equal footing with them. Instead of being from the Great Wheel they are from the Feywild.
I think that is accurate. Depending on setting, beings such as Asmodeus and Titania are also deity’s in their own right.
Goblin met an Archfey once, she was quite nice to goblin…..until goblin took the archfeys necklace, but goblin still had it so no regrets
But leaning into the 9 lives thing of going from mundane cats in their first life to full Wonderland Cheshire fey cat in their 9th life
The Dresden Files depiction if fey is fascinating to me
they just fey with essential npc status
Did you ever play much 4E? Can you give us your personal perspective on the 4E vs 5E divide? Thank you, love the content!! 😁
Maleficent. (Not the Angelina Jolie one.) Coraline’s Other Mother. Jareth the Goblin King. Oberon and Titania. All examples of archfey.
I like using the Dresden Files Faerie Courts to model my Fae on
You look amazing
My brother, who reads the Monster Hunter books, and I, who plays DnD, once tried to discuss archfey. Will got very confused when I told him archfey aren’t known for eating people.
"Archfey eating people is so 263 BCE."
Sometimes being vague is nice because I can fill the blanks in a way to suit the needs and expectations of the table, and well as the campaign I am interested in running, but I don't buy rule books for writing prompts I buy them for guidelines and mechanics deeper than "roll a die and see how you feel about it."
For instance, if I understand correctly the Strixhaven book has some wacky magical sport but playing it just boils down to "yeah dawg roll a skill check and whoever rolls higher wins." That is a letdown.
They are like spirits but they are not dead and cannot "die". They are like energy, rising and falling, coming and going like the seasons.
The one rule when dealing with fey: Never say yes without thinking.
This may sound easy, but they can ask you if they can have your name.
The D&D sourcebooks are in general vague on everything but art. And getting vaguer by the year. 3rd party supplements are where the details are at.
Thought one- omg yes! I was just thinking this! Whole vid pls?
Thought two- you helped collab on a setting all about fey lords?! 💸
Wait, so I could have a character with Ginny Di as her Warlock patron?
I mean, her name is Diadne and she has her own whole character and story that is more than just "Ginny Di, plopped into a fey setting," but... KINDA, YEAH!
Idea for ya'll: An ancient moondragon, the Archfey of Dreams
They're like normal fey, only Dire. I mean, Arch!
Always looking for more fae shit, I'll have to take a look at this. Also archfae Ginny? What could be better!
I’ve always seen archfey as the fae equal to demon princes
My curent bbeg is a carnival ringmaster, i… just need to figure out how the fuck they are meant to be able to fight them later.
Interesting ideas.
It always amused me in Critical Role's second campaign when members of the Mighty Nein acted like they could threaten Artagan, because no.
If you like fae stuff I recommend checking out Changeling: The Lost, either to play or just to mine for inspiration and lore.
idea on how to make a pc become an archfey?
Idea for an arch fey patreon: cuz of time dilation they aren't very with the times. While the settings is a bit more modern they are still caught in the romance of classic fantasy, for instance. Or maybe they use outdated slang, a la the 90s Vs now
Did you intentionally dress like Phineas? I'm diggin it!
I'd sooner trust a demon, devil, or great old one as my patron.
Not sure if it is more nuanced than Great Old Ones. Great old ones can fit into a lot of niches, they just don't interact like the far or feinds do.
So I clicked on this thinking it said "What are Archery."
It makes sense they would be equivalent to demon princes or celestials. As strong as you can get short of divinity. Representative of neutrality versus the good and evil beings. So their motivations and goals are not readily apparent.
Cool! 😀
I take alot of insperation from Celtic fairies xD; with my Nan being Irish American she used to warn me about the Fairies often and not to piss them off
just irish gods pretty much
Same as a Noble Genie, the best example is Calim was the noble djinni lord who founded the Calim Empire in what is now Calimshan.
Engagement for the engagement god!²
One question could they crossbreed whit mortals?
Look up highe. It explains it better.
