Smog Shop Owner Salary [Profit]: What to Expect | 2022

What’s up guys Oscar Gomez, here from Master Automotive Training. I was recently asked, how much does a smog shop owner make a month? Followed by Is it worth opening your own smog shop? I have done the work for you, GO ahead and grab your tools guys, let’s get ready, let’s hit it!
Before I can tell you how much a shop owner makes, we need to see the normal operating costs of a smog shop so we can later deduct that from our sales to calculate our earnings as a shop owner. As an experienced past shop owner, I will be sharing this information from my personal experiences opening my own shops and coaching others to do the same. An average Star certified test only station will average a couple hundred cars a month. I know of stations that do more than 400+ cars a month, that's possible but I want to share a realistic numbers.
Let's start with a slower shop first. If the shop does a couple hundred inspections at the state average of $50.00 that would be a grand total of $12,000.00 a month!With a lease, plus your utilities, government fees, equipment rentals, and payroll if you will be hiring a technician, this would mean that from your $12,000.00 gross profit you will be left with a pretty big chunk for you free and clear. On a high car volume station with a lease, plus your utilities, government fees, equipment rentals, and payroll if you will be hiring a technician, this would mean that your gross profits will be near $18,000.00!
These numbers don’t include state licenses, payroll taxes, taxes in general, your CPA, marketing and some other items that are considered part of doing business. I like to point out that by simply working to add 5 more cars a day to your daily operation, you can increase your gross profits by 33%. Imagine simply talking to everyone you know about your business handing out a frew flyers or business cards as you go about your day brings in an extra 5 cars, bringing your entire business profits up by 33%, that's simply AMAZING!
I always recommend clients I coach to work their shops as owners operators for at least a year to put systems in place, then I help them structure that shop solid, before we begin to work on opening their second, third, or forth locations. Knowing the business from the technician side first then moving into the business side is best to better understand how your business functions from the ground up.

You’ll need State license, station license, city license, county permit, if doing repairs fire department and EPA permit.

From 2003 to 2015 in the Bay Area my shop did 1200 smogs a month steady. 3 machines always.

I am buying a smog check and repair station. I have been a star smog technician for 9 years. I am wondering roughly what should I be paying for a business that’s been here for almost 20 years. Is it based on annual gross or something different? It is going to be the business only so not the building or property, that I will be leasing. The shop I am looking at does 15 smogs per day and is a single owner operator. I will keep it the same.

Hello Sir,My name is carlos and I was thinking about opening up in Mcdonough,GA but with EV on the rise,is it a good idea to consider a smop shop??
Hey Carlos, I'm not sure on the laws in GA, but here in CA even with EV on the horizon, we will begin to inspect vehicles 8 years from new. So in 2035 when gas car will no longer be sold, 8 years after that we will begin to smog check the 2035 vehicles. I'd say look into those laws and if they are like ours, go for it!
What type of shop would be better to open test only or test and repair?
It’s really up to you. See a test only is less expensive to open however you are limited by the state to only perform inspections and verify vehicles. If you do a test and repair you can not only do smog check you can repair them, also participate in the brake & lamp program, CAP program just to name a few however it’s much more expensive to open a test and repair station.
Is it still a good idea to open smog check shop even though CA is putting a ban on gas vehicles in the future?
Of course it is! See even if this law does happen, up to 8 years after you'll still be inspecting cars that where purchased 8 years prior new form the dealership. Plus the state of CA gets millions of federal money for this program, and they won't want to lose their money maker.

You'd need to take Level I and Level II training to qualify for the state exam. Once you complete your training, we pay your application fee and you'll be testing about 5-6 weeks after completing your training.
The star program has changed where no score techs can’t be star eligible. This throws a wrench in new shop owners and techs trying to get in the business.

You should try asking a manager of the shop you work at or your instructor how much it will cost

Yes, ask for Calvis invoices to see how many inspections are being performed. Also make sure city planning will continue to allow smog shop at current location.

For a test only station that would be ideal. If you are looking to open a test and repair you’d need to plan on about double that amount.

We are required by CA law to advertise a full price. All fees must be included, if you charge an extra to cover that state expense that must be rolled into your labor.

Hey Jacob, that’s a great question! Their are a few factors that can change the cost to initially open a smog shop but, plan on at least $20,000.00 to get you open.

Congrats on the 80+ a day! I advise you to watch your pricing BAR is doing ads and pricing verification and having a range is not proper BAR pricing procedure that will end up getting you in trouble for violation of B&P Code. $50 is low actually, this is California. The reason behind the price is shop overhead, technical training, equipment payments, state server payments, state certificate payments, city, state and federal taxes, plus employees salaries, and of course the owner still has to eat. Support local smog shops.

Am I able to work at my own station if I have no mechanic certification? I work on my own car and know how to operate but am not a certified mechanic
I understood you want to be able to do mechanic work at your own station is that correct?
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining to start my goal is to have employees but if one doesn’t come in one day or the first few months I start before I hire I’d work there. Even thought I have never been a mechanic or gone to a school can I still operate myself. Can I also hire anyone or only certified mechanics?
@@lilbreezi1243 will you be doing smog check? If it's just an auto repair shop, yes you can step in. However id recommend getting training first. If it will be a smog check station, you'll have to be a smog technician to step in as a technician.

What if you don't know about cars? Lol do you recommend or no?
We all have to start somewhere. With that said if you are planning on being a test only station owner and operator with the training you will take prior to your state test you'll be able to perform your duties efficiently. If you plan on doing smog check test and repair then I would recommend having more knowledge and experience in repairs and diagnosis prior to jumping into that tier of smog check/auto repair.
