    Nick great video of this 1982, CHP Mustang. I restore these 1982-1993 CHP Mustangs, 1987,1989 and 1995, CHP Caprices and the 2002, CHP Camaros. My CHP restoration videos are on you tube and come out to see the CHP cars I restore for this interesting hobby with CHP cars.

      I still have my 1984 Washington State Patrol Mustang SSP..bought surplus in 1988...it was our daily driver until our family outgrew it...all white with dog dish hubcaps..spotlight...5 speed manual...all original...bought the correct vintage JetSonic light bar on Ebay just in case of future project...WigWags still work for some reason....fire it up monthly...4bbl carburetor takes a little cranking to fill....138K miles on the odometer....garaged the entire time...I love this car.

    I remember in 1985 getting squirrely in my freshly rebuilt 350LT1 Z/28 and I got pulled over by one of these. We sat and talked cars for half an hour and he let me go with a warning. When he left he smoked the tires and grinded into second gear still burning rubber. That was a hilarious memory. Still have that car.

      Riding shotgun was used to describe the guard who rode alongside a stagecoach driver, ready to use his shotgun to ward off bandits or hostile Native Americans. In modern use, it refers to the practice of sitting alongside the driver in a moving vehicle. The phrase has been used to mean giving actual or figurative support or aid to someone in a situation. The coining of this phrase dates to 1905 at latest

      on one of the older 70's/80's police cars the shotgun was secured on the bottom front of the seat. so you were literally riding shotgun haha (although yes the term did come from stagecoaches)

    The real term riding shotgun came from the Wild West era when the stage coach was transporting money the driver would have someone sitting next to him with a shotgun hence the term riding shotgun

    There were also a small number of *hatchback* *SSP* *Mustangs* produced. The coupe was favoured over the +/- *5* hatchbacks; I've seen *one* example of the hatchback SSP, back in the mid-late 1980's.
    I wonder whatever became of it?

  • @richardgreene6810

    No, "riding shotgun" refers back to the Old West and riding stage coaches. You had the driver who handled the reins, and then you had the guy next to you with a shotgun to protect the stage coach from bandits.

    Too funny note that the long weapon antenna was for the main dispatch radio since it was low band it was not for a citizens band or CB radio. It was for their main dispatch frequency, which was usually around 42.000 mega.

    The term riding shotgun came from the stage coach days when people and money were transported around in a stage coach. There was the driver of the stage coach and someone sitting next to him with a double barreled shotgun. The person with the shotgun would “ride” holding the shotgun.

      @veetikari111 4 роки тому

      I dont understand why would you do that :D usually you have more important things to focus on than shifting gears manually and thats why police cars should be automatic.

    • @TheYourPlaysTV
      @TheYourPlaysTV 4 роки тому +2

      @@veetikari111 Well most of the cars in germany are with shifting gears. It's like a "tradition". I guess that's why police cars are manual. But the newer police cars are automatic.
      You also need to know that we don't have that many dangerous situations where you need a higher level of focus, like in the United States. And Police Officer don't drive alone, they're always two of them in one car.

    • @veetikari111
      @veetikari111 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheYourPlaysTV yeah i know. I live in finland and its very peaceful in here also. But you have to remember that police cars can be travelling at really high speeds when responding to calls and it is a whole lot easier to drive if you dont have to think about the gears. And also you can keep your both hands on steeringwheel all the time so you have better control of the car if something happens

    "Riding shotgun" comes from the days of (Wells Fargo} stagecoaches. One man drove the horses (6 or 8 usually) and his buddy sat up top next to him, with shotgun, to ward off highwaymen and Indians! Watch the (original) movie "Stagecoach" - with John Wayne &c - explains it all!

About 10 months later the NMSL was modified to allow 65 mph on rural highways (a move supported by the CHP and not the IIHS!)

    FYI-
    The very first order of 800 Mustang 5.0L Police Interceptors went to CHP
    Sacramento. To get the car to achieve the top speed the CHP wanted the
    first 800 were equipped with turbos. By the time the next fleet order was
    made, Ford electronic
    which allowed Ford to ditch the turbos. These cars had the first standard
    trans the CHP had seen in several decades. I talked to more than one officer
    who reported the smaller car handled great & was fun to drive with the stick
    & all.
    HOWEVER,
    the small bucket seats hurt their butt after a long day in the saddle.
    Not long after taking delivery late one night on I-10 outside of San Bernadino
    a CHP mustang unit saw a pretty new looking Corvette speeding. The Officer
    hit his lights and the Corvette hit his gas. The race was on. The Mustang
    chased the Corvette eastbound all across the California desert that night but
    the Corvette beat the Mustang across the state line. The Mustang was not able
    to overtake the big block corvette, but, it never lost sight of him.
    !

    There ain’t no well in hell you can convince me that this paltry 82 2bbl 5.0 mustang was a better CHP chase car than the experimental 79 Z28 with a 350 4bbl.

      It was. The experimental Z28’s had reliability problems with their engines, almost all of them save for the ones that were assigned to Los Angeles blew their motors, some more then once. There were rumors that these Z28’s were sabotaged from the factory, more then likely it was just that these were regular production Z28’s, there was no police or severe service packages. The only upgrades were changed rear end gearing to improve top speed and upgraded brakes from the police package Bel Air. Otherwise just a normal Z28.
      The Mustang had a severe service package and also were lighter. 160 hp back then wasn’t too shabby. It was enough to the job back then.
      Plus any police package car from back then were abysmally slow. The ‘81 Dodge St. Regis that the CHP got only had a wheezy 318 that was too underpowered and the Impala 350 and Ford Crown Victoria LTD 351 weren’t any better either.
