I bought this exact bike about 2 months ago. I've been very happy with it. So far the only change I've made was to switch out the awful stock pedals to some raceface chesters. I'm just getting into mountain biking after years of wanting to and it is very fun.
@@jordanoliveto5863 I've not heard of them, I'm an absolute newbie to bike stuff. I got the chesters because they had them at my local rei, they had metal spikes and they were only about 30 bucks.
Love my 2023 Roscoe 7! I’ve upgraded the bars, stem, grips, pedals and brakes. Only thing I’m thinking of upgrading in the next year is a better fork. But so far, I’m enjoying the Roscoe!
I was on a trail one time all alone and I came to a fork, so I stopped to think where to go and get a drink of water.. I looked around and then over to my right, 10 feet away was a huge deer. we were looking at each other at eye level. It actually didn't freak out and stayed for maybe 5 seconds and then walked away casually. I had no idea it was there.. They make no noise.
We went for a casual park ride when my daughter was little. We saw several deers just right off in the woods while all the cars are in a rush driving right by and don’t even know they are there.
Great looking bike. My Trek superfly elite has been a rock solid bike for over 10 years. Getting time to upgrade for internal cables, 1 x drive train, and dropper post.
I have the same bike. The only let downs are the brakes and the tires. I replaced mine with some take off slx 7100’s and the tires with minions dhf and dhr’s in 2.5. It totally transformed the bike.
I just picked one up a few weeks ago. Haven't rode bikes since the younger years. I really like the bike. Can't wait to improve and possibly move up to full suspension one day. Thanks for the review!
I have this exact bike - it’s so nice to a video of it in this colour!! Most people seem to have the teal/trek black one. I upgraded from the Marlin 7 (in the same colour haha). I’m so happy you love this bike!! Thanks for this video Matty! 🇨🇦
Did you get to see the color in person? When i saw them in person (I’m quite lucky to live next to a highly stocked one) the black one looked the best, then teal, then light blue. I thought i would like the teal in person, but its just a little bit crazy.
Awesome video and what beautiful scenery. Looked like a super fun trail. Some of them trails you hit are just too rocky and technical for my liking. This trail was more my speed, maybe cause I am almost 60🫤
I still have my Roscoe 8, that's how I found your channel 3 yrs ago, we had the same 2020. The frame has been replaced under warranty with what is technically a 2021 X Caliber 8 in the matte black w/ white Trek logo, but no model name. I still have no regrets of my original purchase, but one day hope to buy either a new Roscoe 9 or a Santa Cruz Chameleon w/ S build and blue colorway.
You live in a beautiful part of America Matty !! Great video once again. Can you please introduce your videos with what city you're in and what bike park you're at?
I live in the PNW and yes this looks like it and my GF just got this bike in size small , she love it!! And lol I like riding it so much, I’m getting my own to add to my Full Suspension enduro , used to own a modded marlin 5 and wow the Roscoe is way way better!! In every way ! It rides so smooth!!
Yoyo just got this bike exact color. Upgraded handlebars to PNW, bontrager grips n pedals. But you are right about the brake levers I'm doing those next. Love the vids
Shimano drivetrains have always been solid, I've used them since 1991. I'm happy with my SLX shifter on my Roscoe 9, but upgrading it to an XT because it's missing a bolt for some reason when I bought it (the one on top of the shifter in the middle).....works fine, just jiggles around and isn't solid on the bike. I've been pretty impressed with the Deore brakes on the 9 as well.
Yes I have this exact model and color! It’s such an incredibly good bike just! I’m a XC rider and have long travel suspension as well! The compliance and geometry it has is light years away from any other hardtail! But I wanna try going XC route with this Roscoe set up! 120mm suspension prolly Sid ultimate and a lighter 100mm seat dropper, will try to shave some weight out of it and see how it behaves! If I don’t like it, I put all the original components back! 🤘🏾
why wouldn't you get an xc bike or frame to start with? the roscoe 7 is way slacker of a frame and it will be very weird to go lower travel than the bike's stock conversion
@@meepcheep314 because I like the geometry of this specific frame, as I stated! Only 20mm won’t throw the geometry off, I don’t think! I could always go back to its default set up if it feels too weird.
Great video, the way you climb hills now is so good. You can see your improvement. Would love to see you get a Marlin 8 which is the top of the entry level, to see how well that does on a trail. Compare that to the Rosco 7. Thank you for your great video.
Yes! That would be amazing. I have been wanting a hardtail to ride on the tamer trails over my Remedy 9.8, but definitely want more of a budget option, with less travel for XC stuff.
My personal opinion. If you're going to ride only dirt trails I would recommend the roscoe. If you ride a mix of dirt and paved the marlin is a jack of all trades but master of none. One major down side to the marlin is the straight steer tube. Heavily limits upgrade options later. (I own a 2019 marlin 7 and a new roscoe 9)
Just picked up a marlin 5 during the trek sale my first mtb and havent been on a bike since i was a kid looking to start riding just ordered some pnw grips i gotta get a more comfortable seat and pedals next
I love my Deore drivetrain. Never had one issue with it yet and it’s been a year. I was constantly adjusting my SRAM Eagle on my 2020 Roscoe 7. Glad they went with Shimano and thru axles.

People complain about the XR4 tires but I don't really get it. They have plenty grip, feel very plush and roll pretty well, too. I really like them and will likely stick to them.
Depends on what you're doing. If you're doing Downhill they just don't cut it and slip easy. If your doing his type of riding your fine. Even the XR5's are not too much better.
I'm a huge fan of Deore. I have an 11-speed Deore crank, derailleur and shifter on my modern hardtail, and Deore derailleurs and shifters on two much older 9-speed mountain bikes. I see no reason to "upgrade," the drivetrains work flawlessly. I doubt the average recreational rider is going to be able to tell the difference between an 11-speed and 12-speed drivetrain.
Are you able to try out a Rocky Mountaim Growler at some point? Its a pretty insane hardtail with mad geometry and I really would love to see what you think of it.
Do you think the Roscoe 7 would be a good upgrade from a Rock Hopper 29 Comp? Cuz I'm leaning that way but unsure if the 7 is enough of an upgrade. Cool video BTW, enjoyed it.
Hey great videos and very informative. I want to get my first bike and seeing if you would happen to know what bike would be good for someone 350lbs thanks in advance
I ordered a marlin 7 but the capacity says 300lbs so am unsure if I should cancel the purchase and look elsewhere or keep it. Don't want to break/mess up a 1k bike. Thanks for responding
haha, loved the dear part! is the remedy 8 worth the extra money? I'm looking at the remedy 8, it's £2400 (big discount) but the roscoe 7 is half the cost. I'm just getting back into mountain bikes after 15 years and the game has changed. im also considering the Scott spark 970. It's hard to decide whether to stick to hard tails, go short travel full suspension or go for the remedy, which lacks the 29 inch wheels. how did you find the components on the roscoe compared to the remedy?
You like the shimano deore? I perched and used 2022 Roscoe 6 looks perfect about a week agi. I was doing light riding and it shifts terribly when I try to ride hard it feels like it’s skipping a gear or something like that and somethings wrong with the rear derailer it’s supposed to be a one by 10 but it only shifts for me one through nine. And two days ago I was going up a small hill in the lowest gear and halfway up the hill. The bike started shifting on its own, and then I tried to shift it down to a lower gear, and right when I got to the top of the hill, my chain broke in like three different places, and it was making a bunch of popping every time I paddled. I’m sorry for the ignorance I don’t know too much about mountain bikes but I paid $900 and I was hoping to get a quality bike. I don’t know maybe somebody can give me advice. I am planning on going into my local track bike shop and I was just going to get the best quality whatever I can and I have about 1000 to spend to fix the problem. Before they do that I’m just looking to get advice on what other people would do. Should I get rid of it and get a better bike or should I upgrade. I was planning on upgrading over time looking to spend a few thousand. I’m new to it and just want advice on what I should do
Just got mine in black. Also an M/L, which I fall right into based on Trek's sizing chart. But I just saw the Joy Of Bike video on R.A.D., and now I'm all messed up about whether I should have gotten an M. What's your height/inseam? How do you feel on the M/L vs an M?
I wish I could ride the old roscoe, those 2 finger brakes (mt200/400 comparable) are the best I ever had, never even seen a dropper irl, superwide bars only useful on wide dh tracks, I'm 184cm, on 700mm bars and they still feel wide, I'm wishing for the oldschool 100mm travel protected by rubber dakar style forks, never had a 1x or 2x drivetrain...33yo and I never experienced anything fancy. Back in 1999 almost nobody had a bike worth 1000+ euro (yes, alrdy included inflation) Maybe everyone around is as poor as me or my neighbourhood just lacks true mountainbikers. The shops usually can't deal with anything tubeless, hardly know shit and I'm in the goddamn Netherlands...the country for cyclists. I expected more after 16 years of not riding mtb. Most ppl still use v-brakes too. The trek roscoe is an easy pick for a lot of reasons, but after hearing about the RSD middlechild and the Marin san quentin oof, sure would like to see you have some fun on those.
Man I don't know what to get - There's Roscoe 7s for 1699 CAD on sale right now, but I'm wondering if I should just save for a full suspension or not. I'm riding a rigid from Canadian Tire right now, and are looking to get a "real" mtb
Im about ready to pull the trigger on the Trek Roscoe 8. And Im wondering if the bike has a killer hub sound ( ziiiiing ) and is it worth the 400 price difference from the Roscoe 7?
@MattyActive awesome. Thanks for the quick reply. Im also considering the On One Wrekker--which has a titanium frame, a lyric select fork and a super slack 62 degree head angle. Great other specs for only $2.300. Any thoughts on the On One bike?
@@MattyActive I've been on the fence between upbiking to the Roscoe 7 or doing a lateral move to the Marlin 7 Gen 3 but you comment here has me sold - if only I can scrape up the $1600 that is! I can't believe it's still on sale after 2+ months.
IDK ... seeing as how Trek puts out a lower tier MTB hardtail line than the Roscoe called the Marlin (which is their entry level) ... I wouldn't call the the 7 entry level. Context matters - entry level Roscoe maybe but not entry level Trek.

I’m 32 and I’m M/L it feels perfect
@@MattyActive I'm closer to 34, so that makes me feel a lot better. Thanks!
The trek roscoe is an easy pick for a lot of reasons, but after hearing about the RSD middlechild and the Marin san quentin oof, sure would like to see you have some fun on those.
can someone help me which bike shoul i get the trek marlin 6 gen 2 or the rocky mountain fusion 10? Thanks
at the current prices, do you think the roscoe 8 is worth the 200+ tax over the 7?
Man I don't know what to get - There's Roscoe 7s for 1699 CAD on sale right now, but I'm wondering if I should just save for a full suspension or not. I'm riding a rigid from Canadian Tire right now, and are looking to get a "real" mtb
If the trees were double the size that would look exactly like the PNW
I’ll pick a Deore 12 speed over a SRAM GX any day!! #shimanooversram
Same here!
Nice!!! 👍 #ClubOsprey
Im about ready to pull the trigger on the Trek Roscoe 8. And Im wondering if the bike has a killer hub sound ( ziiiiing ) and is it worth the 400 price difference from the Roscoe 7?
It has a really good sound! And yes I think it’s worth the 400 for sure. I think the Roscoe 8 is the best value Roscoe in my opinion
@MattyActive awesome. Thanks for the quick reply. Im also considering the On One Wrekker--which has a titanium frame, a lyric select fork and a super slack 62 degree head angle. Great other specs for only $2.300. Any thoughts on the On One bike?
Fear not, deer almost never attack. They are too good eating
What do you think is a better choice marlin 8 gen3 or the roscoe 7 I should be riding some trails and and roads
The Roscoe 7 because you get more for your money and it’s future proof if you decide you want to do more with it
@@MattyActive thanks for the reply I was thinking that would be best
@@MattyActive I've been on the fence between upbiking to the Roscoe 7 or doing a lateral move to the Marlin 7 Gen 3 but you comment here has me sold - if only I can scrape up the $1600 that is! I can't believe it's still on sale after 2+ months.
Hey what GoPro chest strap do you use?
The GoPro chesty
@@MattyActive cool thanks dude
Wait, is that the Trek Roscoe 7?
Yes
What is your height and inseam? What size is the bike?
I’m 5’8 and 32 inseam. I ride M/L
It’s down to you that I have a trek roscoe 8
Nice! I really appreciate you watching!!
@@MattyActive I am from the uk and watch your videos done a few mods hope wheels and hubs renthal handle bars
What tire pressure are you running?
I was about 22 front and 25 rear
IDK ... seeing as how Trek puts out a lower tier MTB hardtail line than the Roscoe called the Marlin (which is their entry level) ... I wouldn't call the the 7 entry level. Context matters - entry level Roscoe maybe but not entry level Trek.
Deore works! I got Sram GX...don`t like it!
I have GX on my trek remedy and have been having issues. No issues with the deore
