The music, the beauty of the scenes, the otherworldly atmosphere with no backstory whatsoever, the complete map shown at the beginning of every level, the fluid game play. This game belongs in the pantheon of NES classics, right up there with Metroid and The Legend of Zelda.

When I was very little I used to watch my mom and her friend play this. I have many fond memories of her, but this is one of the fondest memories I have because she didn't play video games much at all, but she loved this game and Gauntlet. I just loved watching smiling, having fun, and her play her heart out. Sadly she passed away when I was 16, but I'll remember those moments when I was a kid always. A while back I fired up the Nintendo emulator and played Wizards and Warriors for old time sakes and ended up beating it right before I had to leave for work and saved the screenshot of my score. "My first job was in a music shop, selling drums,
until a Yamaha CX5 music computer came
into stock. I learned how to use it, and using
MIDI I was able to hook it up to several drum
machines and synthesisers. It helped me to sell
a lot of music computers, but the best deal was
when demoing the unit to two brothers: Tim
and Chris Stamper. They asked me who had
written the demo music and, upon explaining
that they were listening to my compositions,
they offered me a job at Rare.
The music for Wizards & Warriors was
inspired by the classical composer Bach, and
was actually based on a tune I wrote when
I was just 15. When the brief came along for
Wizards & Warriors, we felt that it would
suit the medieval style of the game - with it
being written on the piano and harpsichord
it seemed to fit. I was working at home at the
time and this was my second job for Rare after
Slalom. I always thought Wizards & Warriors
was really interesting and the main character,
Kuros the knight, was pretty cool."

Excellent use of suspense, leaving your self one hit away from a "game over" at the end, there. :3

Did you know? There was a short lived tv series based on the plot of Wizards & Warriors.

This is really nostalgic. I managed to run this several times as a kid from a borrowed console. I think this game helped my mental development lol
For a long time I forgot what this game is called now I know and remember

Wizards & Warriors contains several dummied items (items removed before
release but still programmed in). Most notably, the Scroll item, which is
even mentioned in the instruction manual, was taken out of the game. This
item allowed you to view your current location on the world map once, then
disappeared. The coding for it still exists, so, with the right cheat
codes, this item can be enabled again. It is a special item, and will
replace whichever one is currently in that slot. Might have been nice, but
a map view only comes in handy in the cave stages. After this, the item
would be a waste, and I guess the programmers figured as much.

Tsss I didn't remember the name of this video game and I was looking for it until I saw cassette covers. The music, the graphics, I remembered everything, I loved playing it. I was born in 85. 👾

Man I'm 50 and I remember playing this game laughing at the boots of force and the death scenes that I wished they were shown here when you die, that leg twitching, classic the game that doesn't get no recognition it truly deserves.

To those who can have genuine nostalgia wrapped around a great memory of this game the opening music can really ignite those emotions further then a videogame should be able to. IMHO it is one of those things that is somehow far more then the sum of it's parts.

Between this game and final fantasy, I got a love for video game music that persisted into my fifties. I studied music and I think when you go through music history you see how video game music is part of our culture and it has adapted its initial limitations to create interesting sound experiences, like “Dancing Mad” with its ELP/Bach type fusion and that iconic laugh in the middle.

Beating this game when I was a kid is so one of my crowning gaming achievements. This was among the first games we got that Christmas with the console, and it was just too hard when I was only 5 or 6. 😅 It wasn't until I was 11 or so that I finally got determined to beat it. I don't remember how long it took me, but it sure wasn't 45 minutes. Took me multiple hours both times (I beat it once just to beat it, and then a second time to prove it to my cousin,) so this is impressive to watch. Makes me want to get into speedrunning it now that I'm in my 40s, just to see how quickly I can do it.
