    Hey Everyone! I wanted to shoot a "redo" of the video setting up my 4-season tent, the Big Horn III from Cabela's. My set up time is normally around 15-20 minutes to pitch the tent and another 30 minutes to dial in the interior. This tent is GREAT and has stood up to all sorts of adverse weather conditions. Thanks for watching!

    Hey Brian,
    Let me just preface this by telling you that you are an absolute inspiration to me. For several years, I have dreamed about living the style of life you currently are. Watching your videos has been pushing me further out the door than ever before. I sit here taking notes, on how I can take your ideas, and practices and make them work for myself. You are the modern day Dick Proenneke. However, there has always been one necessary evil pushing me back inside the comforts of my home. Money. I'm not talking about the up front costs of setting up my truck, or coolers, or awnings, or anything like that. The recurring and unforeseen costs are what I can't seem to wrap my head around. Things like fuel, inevitable truck breakdowns, vehicle maintenance, food, HEALTH INSURANCE? I would love to hear from you about how you have conquered all of these costs, and really made it work. However, I do understand that this may be a sensitive topic, and if you would rather keep that private, I respect that. Once again, thank you so much for all of your videos, you are a true inspiration
    Ken.

      Hi Ken, thank you for the kind words! This lifestyle is incredible and I count my blessings every day. Yes, steady income is difficult to come by while living on the road full time but it is possible if one gets creative and thinks outside the box. I am planning to do a video about my Monthly Budget today and will have that edited and posted to my channel by Friday. I'll be sure to shoot another video maybe tomorrow or Friday about the different ways I've earned income over the past two years. Stay tuned for more info!

      It's called getting sponsor's or patrons .

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  5 років тому +3

      I prefer not going the sponsor route because it comes with strings attached. Instead, I saved up and have residual income from investments. I also do side projects for Merrell, BioLite, and weBoost which consists of being their model for product shoots and making short videos for them which they can use for marketing. I don't have any interest in becoming sponsored because then I'd be tethered to a corporate structure and the demands that come with it.

    At the point you came into the picture dragging the Alaskan Pipeline behind you I started laughing. After that it was like watching an episode of the Red Green Show! It's time to start making these tents pop up tents like the ice shacks. Put a stove Jack in them and good to go. Light, easy to set up and take down. I'm looking at making one out of an insulated ice hut. Putting the chimney through a removeable window and go hunting. I've had a wall tent for years and want a simpler design.

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  7 років тому +4

      Yeah, I agree. It would be great to have a quicker solution for a 4 season tent with a stove jack. I think the issue manufacturers run into is the frame for the tent and how to make it really durable for withstanding winter camping while making them quick to deploy. Taking into account the wind during the winter (sometimes up to 70mph in my area) and also the weight of snow, I'm not sure what materials would be best. I'd love a quicker solution to setting up my winter shelter, that's for sure!

    I guess if car camping this would work out great but I wouldn't want to set this thing up in a Colorado snow storm. For its size, and therefore wind resistance, I think you will need to set this up with some sort of deadman hold in the deeper snow. Nice place to hang out in winter though. Thanks Brian.

    I think I would prefer this to a van. A van comes in handy if you are constantly on the move. Or if you have to stealth in a walmart parking lot. But look at the elbow room and ground level. And then there is the the 25,000 to 75,000 that you save.

    Hey Brian,
    I too just came across your channel and am really enjoying it. I do have a couple questions for you:
    1) After seeing your other videos on how your truck is set up; are you able to store your tent, stove, cot, etc. in the truck as well? Is there a summer and winter load-out, and if so, does that mean you have a storage locker somewhere?
    2) I am new to the C-Springs area and am looking to start outfitting my truck. Your videos on the bed area, shower, awning and ARB room have given me some great ideas. Did you locally purchase your equipment or did you find online to be the best way?
    Thanks a lot, keep the videos coming.

    Your the first person I've seen with a fire extinguisher handy! Excellent! But that dry chem extinguisher is toxic! There are extinguishers that are non toxic. Coldfire extinguishers or fireice by gel tec. Another type of DIY extinguisher is a garden sprayer with water and 4 to 8 ounces of dawn dish soap to a gallon of water that adds weight to the water. Also acts as a foam. Also you can purchase arm and hammer and or generic baking soda in a box and there's your dry chem extinguisher but non toxic. Look up UA-cam videos on coldfire extinguishers and also videos fireice by geltec

Table, chairs, and potty in tent; yoga mat, pillows, and sleeping bag beside my two dogs’ soft sided carriers/beds on the floor of my minivan; supplies and duffle bag on front seat. Very comfortable. I’m over sixty years old, not a problem. Gotta have my coffee in the morning, in the tent, and play my ukulele, then do yoga later in the tent. (Pulling and setting up a trailer seems too complicated for me. The instant Coleman cabin tent takes about two or three minutes. Yoga practice and hiking with my dogs help me keep strong.) Happy trails.

      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  7 років тому +1

      Hi Run Run, yes this tent performs incredibly well in the rain. I'm very impressed and yes, I use the floor liner. Helps to keep holes out of your permanent floor from pesky ashes that may escape your wood stove. I give this tent a ten out of ten.

      You can get a welder's banket, they come in various sizes. Welder's blankets are made of fiberglass and protect against molten metals, so they can stand up to much cooler embers

    Is the hot springs pool on Mt. Princeton still open?

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  5 років тому

      Hey Mike, sorry for the late reply. Yes, the Mt Princeton Hot Springs Pool is open and they've made lots of upgrades over the past year to the entire complex. I prefer the creekside natural pools in the winter time when the water is running at it's lowest flow in Chalk Creek. It's awesome to lay on the sand and let the hot spring water bubble up underneath you.

    Good set up especially the stove and does the material keep out tha cold. I notice you have set up other different tents for demotration how much did they. Also did you tagged out. I like the tent better then Walmart tents....

      Cabelas are good quality but almost any 4 season tent is going to be pretty pricey. Not sure Walmart even offers them.

    Can you install a wood stove on any tent just wanted to know cuz I'm thinking of buying a tent

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  5 років тому

      Yes, you can buy the materials to create a stove jack in any tent. Just make sure you have enough insulation around the stove jack opening and a heat shield for any areas of your tent which may be close to the stove or the stovepipe. I would recommend having a canvas or synthetic blend which is fire resistant as normal 3 season tent material melts easily at high temps.

    I was thinking of getting one of these tents but I would like to use 3 of the Cabela's XL cots. By the look of your video it doesn't really seem possible to get 3 of those cots in there and still use the stove. What do you think?

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  6 років тому +1

      Hey Almasi72, I would think three cots may be a little bit of a tight fight in there. I've had two full sized cots in the tent before, one on each side, and there's not much additional room for another cot. However, I do think it's possible, you'd just be sleeping very close to one another.

    Do you live in tents or the back of your truck? I have a dodge dakota and I put a shell on it but it's still really cramped in there. I sleep in there but I haven't been using the bed I built.

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  7 років тому +3

      Hi Chris, I actually do both. I have the Cabela's 4-Season Tent for winter camping and then I spend the Spring, Summer, and Fall in my pickup truck sleeping in the topper with a platform bed. It's pretty cramped in my topper but I like the tight sleeping quarters so it doesn't really bother me.

    Can anyone tell me if a wood stove in the tent creates condensation on your walls?

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  5 років тому

      Hi Jerro, the stove doesn't create condensation since it's a dry heat but your body and breath will so it's always a good idea to vent your tent while winter camping so the walls don't accumulate condensation.

      Judith Gash I didn’t want to detract from the video, but I’ll tag onto your comment. I don’t usually pull out my mike cover, but if it’s at all windy, you just have to! (Unless you want to clean up in post). Oh, and never feel bad for fast forwarding through slow parts! Just some advice from a wanna-be creator...

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  5 років тому +1

      These are much easier than a canvas wall tent and weigh half as much. The wall tents require two people to set them up and then you have to put in a platform floor which is cumbersome. Out of the 4 season tents I've been in, this one by far is the easiest to set up. You have to remember, these tents can withstand sustained winds of 90mph and can ride out temps as low as -35F with the comfort of a wood stove so it''s not your run of the mill lightweight backpacking tent.

    I’d have pitched the middle poles up first, then the ends. That way you don’t have to lift the middle while you’re staking off the ropes.

      Hi Michael, sorry for the late reply. I was just reviewing the comments for this video and noticed I hadn't yet responded to your inquiry. No, I don't run into issues since I move my tent every two weeks. I modified the ground stakes so I can still remove them if the ground is frozen. I adhere to stay limits and bounce around the valley every 2 weeks. Hope you have a great New Year!

      Have you had experience setting up other 4-season tents? This is by far the fastest winter tent I've set up, the double walled canvas tents are twice as heavy and hard to set up as one person. This tent is designed to handle winds up to 80mph and temps as low as -40F.

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures

      Hi Mr C, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at the livability of these outfitter tents. I've spent the past two winters full-time above the snowbelt at 9,400ft on Mt Antero in the Collegiate Peaks and I've not had any issues. These tents are designed to shed snow and I've not experienced any issues. The coldest night I had was -27F and my tent performed great - the stove kept the interior of the tent 60F. In addition, the tent is designed to handle winds up to 70mph but I'm not exactly itching to test that out :)
