Being smart and being lucky isn't something that's ever been discounted in one piece as vital for success. But it's also been proven time and time again that the only way to acctually achive your dream in this world is to put fighting for it above anything else.

@@Mr-ON If you want to achieve greatness yeah. I don't know why everyone is surprised here that Oda is putting real life elements in One Piece. In our own world only the most exceptional people really achieved historic greatness. From the Michael Jacksons to the Gangis Khans. All the the worlds most impactful figures were EXPETIONAL people who defied the odds. The reason Supernovas like Luffy, Kid, and Law will rise to greatness is that they still chose to go directly against the Yonko, when everyone else told them they were unstoppable. Pirates like Hawkins and Appo will never reach the top of the pirate ladder because they refuse to keep climbing when knocked down.

@@ayubsharif7419 Thats why marineford is such a great arc because it supports hawkins ideology. Luffy went against the odds and got decimated. I'd say its almost always a given that luffy will win sooner or later in an arc. Its the antagonist who are going against the odds. Fate is on luffy's side; he has the pirate king's hat; he has a trusted reader of ponugliphs; he has the best navigator, best ship rite, best chef, best doctor, strongest fishman and best helmsman not to mention tons upon tons of allies. I think we can all agree even in wano with all the prophicies kaido is the one fighting the odds not luffy. The problem with having luffy lose is that oda can't just leave a defeated luffy to be killed by his enemy. For example in marineford conviniently law showed up (a doctor with a broken fruit based on surgury) who conviniently has submarine which can't be persuited by the navy; to save luffy by risking his own and his crew's life, then law's submarines somehow escaped the switness of two navy admirals.

I feel like Hawkins got screwed by matchups in Wano that made him look worse. The Zoro fight was a skirmish at best and him 'losing' wasn't really a loss at all, so that doesn't count. Law is pretty much his hard counter, because he can easily slice up and beat Hawkins without even touching his voodoo dolls. And Killer caught him off guard and beat him on a technicality, because it slipped his mind that Kidd lost his arm and Killer's greatest ability seems to be his speed- he was able to blitz him and take off his arm. I actually love this because it feels like vintage one piece where fights were decided based on devil fruit powers and creative solutions to problems, not haki, and it leaves the door wide open for Hawkins to successfully combat MUCH more powerful opponents in the future without it being inconsistent.

Hawkins flaw lies within one of the main themes of One Piece. Of Destiny, Fate and fighting the Odds.
This is something peppered throughout the story at rare moments and it’s something people often confuse for fate or destiny. Especially when looked at in isolation but when you put them all together it paints a very clear picture.
The truth is that there is no such thing as “fate” in One Piece. Thats just something a lot of characters believe because it’s an easy “go to” explanation.
Whats actually happening is far simpler.
One of the reasons the Katakuri fight was so great was because in encapsulated damn near every theme in the story in one single encounter while developing both characters. But the important part here is what it has to say about “fighting the odds”. Oda describes Luffy as a man of action. So in this encounter we have a clash between Katakuri the man who can see the future vs Luffy the man of action. The question asked for us at the start of the fight is “who decides the future?” and in the end the man of action succeeds over the man who could merely “see” the future. What the story is trying to say it made clear through Bege much earlier: “You can only see the future, everyone else has the power to change it.”
The ability to take action is what decides the future. Which is why Luffy succeeds where Katakuri fails.
The point the story is trying to make is that the most effective way to predict the future is to create it. Your actions effect the outcome. The Odds are NOT static. They are always changing and your actions have the potential to change them. Which is why guys like Killer and The Rooftop 5(wow that sounds like a band name) are on the same wavelength. They believe in their own ability.
In Luffy vs Katakuri, the future seeing man thinks that Luffy’s future is decided. Because he’s already seen it. But Luffy persists and takes action against every prediction. To the point where the outcome has completely changed. And by the end of the fight Katakuri can no longer see a future where he defeats Luffy. Because Luffy changed his odds. Through taking action.
We have this theme coming up again earlier in the arc with Tama. The Beast Pirates are at a massive advantage over The Alliance during the Raid. But because Tama chose to take action, those Odds have changed. Having literally said: “I’ve come here to change those odds.”
Oda has been telling us this long before Wano.
You can go back through the series and see this everywhere. This is why Shanks literally says to Coby at Marineford that: “those few seconds of courage you took to take action just changed the future”
Again the story is hitting at the idea of people’s actions being what decides the future. Not fate.
We see this come up again with Ivankov in Impel down. He tells Mr 2 that “Miracles only happen to those who never give up”.
It’s the actions of those who pursued something against all odds that create the miracles. Their actions created that new possibility. Not fate. Which is why you’ll see something like a storm saving Roger in his fight with Shiki. Roger persisted against overwhelming odds and was rewarded with a miracle.
Another commonly misunderstood scene that shows us this theme is when Hawkins is checking Luffy’s Odds after Marineford. Hawkins can’t get Luffy’s odds of survival to come out as Zero. A lot of people think this is fate but if you remember the theme then it’s clear that isn’t the case. This isn’t plot, this isn’t fate, the reason Luffy’s odds do not reach zero is because Luffy is still fighting. He hasn’t given up yet. The point the scene is trying to get across is that no matter what the odds are, no matter how often they change as long as you’re still fighting/taking action? They are NOT zero.
This idea is even reflected in Luffy’s entire journey. Think of where he started. At the beginning of the series Coby tells Luffy that a guy like him with no Pirate crew had no chance. That the odds against him were so astronomical, that it was impossible for him to be the Pirate King in the Golden Age of Pirates. And you know what? Coby is exactly right. If Luffy faced Emperors as he was back then? He would have stood no chance and died instantly. But because Luffy kept taking action, growing stronger, building his crew, forming connections Luffy has completely flipped that scenario. He’s completely changed his odds to the point where people are now calling him the 5th Emperor on the seas and is one of the most highly talked about Pirate King candidates. That idiot in a barrel who got lost at sea has now earned the respect of Kaido himself, being viewed as a worthy opponent and is now seemingly fighting on par with the World’s Strongest creature. Luffy’s come a long way but if he looked at those odds….and did nothing? He’d be right where he was at the start of the story. Nothing would have changed.
To accept the odds is to allow things to remain as they are. When the odds aren’t in your favor you shouldn’t be thinking “Oh theres no way I can win.” You should be thinking “Ok what can I do to change that?” Having the odds stacked against you is indicator of how much action you should be taking. Not a sign for you to take no action.
    tl;dr
*Thats what Hawkins needs to learn in Wano and thats What I believe is character arc is going to be.*

And the official English translation for the section about the good card that you're talking about doesn't refer to one card. After drawing a card that was detrimental to him and his allies, he basically says that there are beneficial cards too. This seems to be what people are hung up on. He says he'll draw a good card next, and then he draws hierophant reversed, the card of pursuit, which he calls good. He has no one magical card for making his allies stronger

The supernovas were all created on a whim and then they turned out to be great for the story so it stands to reason that not all of them would be relevant deep into the story. The only way to switch this and make them all relevant going forward is if at least some of them join Kid's crew. Since he's the pirate that most strictly adheres to fate right now, he could also potentially have the most cathartic "defying fate" moment in the series. Specifically, expectations that where set after Law, Beige and now Killer have done more in the story then was reasonable to expect. Kid (still), Bonny, Urouge and X Drake all seem to have bigger thins in the future.
Still, I don’t thing he was a bad presence in the story. He was engaging in the beginning of Wano and it was fun to speculate about his predictions. He was just underutilized.

I really don't see the need to be all pessimistic yet.

I think that if the raid does fail, Hawkins character could still have more interesting things to do, but not in the way I've seen most people talk about him.
I think Hawkins could join the alliance for the second round, but not because that's his cards tell him, one piece has never been a story of characters taking the most logical route even if it means abandoning your allies and dreams and be rewarded for it.
If the raid fails it would give Hawkins the chance to finally make a decision for his own instead of blindly following what his cards tell him. So, if he switches sides, it shouldn't be because it gives him the best chances for survival, but because we wants to fight for himself and his dreams, even if victory is statistically impossible in his eyes.

Oda stated that going into the timeskip, he believed some of the Supernovas would die but they all surprised him by surviving. To me, this indicates that going into the timeskip, as a writer, Oda didn't have plans for all the supernovas and intended on having some of them just die over the skip. But, as time progressed, he saw ways to include them. Bege and Apoo seem like the strongest candidates to me since both of them were depicted having rough starts when entering the New World in the pre-timeskip's closing chapters.
Apoo being shoeshorned into Kaido's crew despite having nothing to do with the crew's concept fit this. Compare him to Drake, whose fruit and plans going into the New World indicates he was always meant to be a Sword member infiltrating Kaido's crew. The same could be said with Bege; a mafia boss with a goofy character design that Oda later saw would fit in well with the themes of Whole Cake Island. Bege even kills a member of his crew for second guessing him back in Sabaody, yet he's portrayed as a family man post-timeskip.
Hawkins, to me, seems like he had the opposite happen. Oda originally set up the character for greatness alongside Law, Kid, and Drake, but fell flat as the story unfolded and Hawkins got regulated to the position he's in today.

I used to play around with Tarot cards when I was younger, I feel that Hawkins journey is that of "The Fool reversed" he was making himself stand still, he was doubting himself and needed to control everything he could so he would not wallow in regret( like Killer pointed to in their battle)
While this is in stark contrast to Luffy and Usopp which I feel follows the path of "The Fool Upright" Taking a step into the world even If you are not 100% ready to face everything, even when facing your weaker self being able to move forward and goes against the odds.

I thought him up to be the most 'clever' and the most 'scheming' out of all the supernova because his abilities were so cuel yet so effective. He seemed like he had an ultimate plan to trump over all of his rival supernovas. Thats something you would expect from one of the most shadowy characters in one piece. My head canon was that he would some how backstab and kill kaido by attaching his life to a fodder and then kill kaido by killing the fodder. Its repeated again and again that Kaido is invincible; he can be defeated but not be killed by ordinary methods. Than hawkins would use kaido's dead body as a summonable creature through his cards. That would have been his secrect weapon/trump card/ultimate plan for the final war. To aquire the strength and durabity he does not have himself. But we didn't get any motivation from him nor really a sense of threat. Maybe the 'Worst' generation isn't that bad after all.

He began was a character that hid in the shadows, living a life of cold calculation. But in order to be great in the one piece world, a person must be bold. They must stand by their ideals, even when it is risky. They must make a name for themselves. As Hawkins never did that, he was a mere shell of a man. He lost the moment he submitted to Kaido. Before I watch. Hawkins has been a very weird but interesting character in Wano in my opinion, and it has been hard to discern his true character. However, now with this fight, I have a 100% better idea of it. He was trying to justify his choices by voicing them out, not only to Killer, but to himself... he had made the choice that was most guaranteed to allow him to survive, rather than something stupid with little chance of working. That's the thing about Hawkins' character... he's a guy that believes in the cards and chance. The cards (or his mindset) most definitely showed him that there's a higher chance of surviving by joining Kaido. And so far, that's been true...
But Luffy and everyone else are showing him that there's still hope. Hawkins was never the type of character to have hope in things like this that seemed pointless, yeah? That is why I believe, now that he has recognized this mistake and regrets it deeply, he's going to make a sacrifice for the Alliance to win... maybe even throw in a last ditch effort out of absolutely nowhere to help them during the final push. Sort of like when Vegeta was pretty much taken out of the fight, but swallowed his pride to help Gohan defeat Cell with a ki blast. I think that would be the perfect redemption for him and would also make him a great character

Like if luffy runs from battle vs pirate mooks the pirate mooks will be depicted as cowardly and luffy will be depicted as trying to protect his crew in a bad situation. For me, there concept is mean to be Luffy rival in a way that they had their own journeys and ambitions and will always follow them.
The one I actually hope will change is Kidd. Despite being an ally, I always find him arrogant and he just want thing to be the way HE want, unlike Luffy or Law, who have or chance or just accept that the plan doesn't go the way it does.

Yo, people are confused in these comments. Hawkins is not picking the best outcome, rather he's picking the safest one.
That is also the reason he didn't chose Luffy's alliance over Kaido, because Luffy is famous for choosing the most dangerous paths like that time when they first sailed the New World.

Hawkins, Uruge and Drake are the most interesting Super Nova after Law, Kidd and Luffy

I always loved the character by design and by ability, but 1029 really makes me love the character as a whole, I view his cruelty as ultimately directed at himself as his frustration of his own low self-esteem (deepen by his bad luck and the present situation places even more doubt on the path he chooses) but ended up directing the misfortune and the result of his actions towards those who I argue earned his begrudging respect (as he always does, but this time also absolving him of his responsibilities, further worsening his standing as a Conquorer, causing even more damage to his considerable pride, after all I assume he also aspired to be the Pirate King), and therefore I can see him mentally breaking when he drew that final card, the Tower, in which his castle (and prison if I may) in the clouds came crashing down on top of him, he just stood there and take the hit, no longer have the will to resist.

Morj is basically saying Hawkins didnt liv up to the potential he had and the way oda used him in the end was mid.
Hawkins has so much more in his kit and character that could have been expanded on but none of that was touched.

I saw one interesting theory about Hawkins devil fruit. What if his devil fruit is just basic straw paramecia? And all other abilities are actually real dark magic. Just wanted to share out there

They should’ve gotten Hawkins and his commanders of his crew vs heat, wire, the two unknown kid pirates that be in the background like the Mohawk dude with shades and the muscle dude, that would be like a satanic cultist war, like voodoo vs heavy metal

Hawkins always was one of my favorite characters, but as he just follows probabilities his course of action would always end in this way for the Strawhats always go against probabilities. He could still play a part in the story by joining the Strawhats, those who win despite odds, as either an allied captain or as a member of his grand fleet. Urouge also still should appear, since Luffy defeated Enel, he could be either an enemy or an ally depending in his relation to Enel, im inclined to the later.

A fatal blunder. Hawkins should've castled early and watched out for the diagonals, specially for underestimated pawns turned Killer Queens at the end of the board.
