I've got an aunt who I haven't talked to in years due to family issues. A few months ago, out of the blue, I got a package from her. It was the Time Magazine issue with Laverne Cox on the cover. Apparently my dad had been feeding her information about my transition. We still are not hugely close but we are a lot more connected then we have ever been.

What you're saying around 5:20 has been happening to me since I have come out to my friends. On the one hand, I see it as them showing a gesture of support and it's really sweet, but on the other hand, I am also feeling much like you. In that, 'this isn't all I am and I hope you see that too'.

Yes, I hope that our well meaning friends are reading these things for their own education, not just because they think I would enjoy the article. I have my own narritive and education on the subject, so it's not always news to me!

"Trans is a big box" - Love that Forrest!
Even more, Being Human is a big box, why must we peg and imprison each other with our perceptions, expectations and taught thinking (cultural biases)? Keep educating and learning and sharing! Appreciate your story and your sharing it!

You are one of my favorite narratives here on youtube b/c of your interest in the community .Your topics/&curiosity expands beyond our community & also within our community.; To me you're like the new modern" Mr. Rogers" .-and that is meant as a compliment. I used to love watching the tv show Mr. Rogers b/c of the story-telling & also b/c as a kid , I used to always enjoyed & be curious as to what sweater & what shoes Mr. Rogers would he be putting on that day... lol. However in your case, instead of wondering about the sweater- I wonder about(&look forward to) & also curious to see whom Forest will do an interview with next , and/or what interesting topic youll be talking about. Anyway Thank you Forest for your continuous great videos!

Thanks for keeping the conversation alive Forest! Always enjoy watching your videos and hearing your input. I had to pause your video to write this but something I thought about after seeing Caitlyn Jenner's photos is the difference between rich and poor transgender folk. Being without the necessary funds to transition it takes a great deal of time to change ones appearance medically to reflect their desired identity. I hope that people such as Jenner doesn't create misrepresentation in the media for cis people maybe thinking being "Trans" is actually easy since those who are more financially capable can make the physical transition happen faster.
If that makes sense? Just my thoughts.

    • @ClosetTransgender
      @ClosetTransgender  9 років тому +1

Wow! I'm glad you put that into words! It does look like transition magic, like: one day a man, a couple days later cover model. Yes, the world needs to have a better idea of what we are about. It's not just a bunch of surgeries that change you in 2 months ... That can hurt trans folk expectations as well as mislead cis ideas. Excellent point! Thank you for the good comment.

As some one who is struggling with whether or not I am truly transgender , the public conversation centered around Caitlyn Jenner makes me nervous and the negativity makes me doubt myself, because I am not comfortable with it yet.

    • @proudvirginian
      @proudvirginian 9 років тому +2

The problem is the very vocal hating minority speak very loudly and you tend to hear those voices more than others because you *are* so nervous. There has been such an outpouring of love and support in the public towards Caitlyn. It's bringing the issue into the spotlight and hopefully things can improve. I've been barking at a few haters, but I've noticed more people are either indifferent or on the side of the transgender community. I don't know where you live, so I can't speak for your area in general, but there are a lot of us out here in the community or advocating and supportive of it.
Everyone is nervous about it regardless of how the public tide is running. That's completely natural. You need to seek out people in the community, to help you out. They don't judge because they're already living it. They can get you in touch with others who can help you with things and decide what's going on. And don't worry about what others outside the community are thinking. Be true to yourself and it will get better.

JayTee67 Some of the most cheesy, transparently-contrived rumors are those that smear transgender identity expression.
This junk's perpetrators' most representative and pathetic hoax, e. g., is the meme amongst people (who otherwise really should know *much* better), that Michelle Obama is a *conspicuous* transitioned individual, based *merely* upon nondescript proportions of her finger-bones and other equally-trivial biometry.
*This* one, is actually due to laughable desperation to slander President Obama at-all-costs, therefore making "transgenderism," just a tangential-target.
The point is, that the jerks who are insulting Caitlyn Jenner and her transition journey, likewise are just *blustering* in *desperation* because they really haven't got any complaints that make any *sense*: In fact, the smear campaign about Ms. Jenner is really just to feed another hoax based on a further, running-fantasy about a shadowy group that the same tabloidists say, wants to *kill* everybody-else.
Meaning that Jenner-herself is just a straw-(wo)man in all this--; not-even the real *target*.
Note that, in my day, our enemies did *much worse*, like sending a hired, huge goon into our mother's house and more, to try to terrorize us out of expressing our identity--; but instead, creating only increased resolve, along with destructive, pointless trauma.
So, instead of *growing trepid* about what you hear people in media saying to readers about a public figure (who *isn't-you*), instead, *celebrate* the *huge-victory*, that *you* dodged the bullet your counterparts two generations earlier, still had to *take*.
There *are* people though, who may be much more *serious* about derailing transgender progress. Hopefully you eventually will discover who *these* are, and help to *combat* them, before they *do* hurt any of us. Thanks.

I 'm so much looking forward to mine dropping plus the jaws of the people in my village who'll probably go WTF! at the same time realizing it was so damn obvious all the time....however, I still feel that people have a long way to go until trans is 'the norm' like gay movement etc.

thelizzerd Try not to let that get you discouraged from staying trans-positive. Most of what I've read about what has been changed in the k-8 and k-12 education systems has not impressed me as being for the good, and I would welcome protests against *most* of it! However, this is one of the areas that clearly needs to remain protected.
Thank you for your diligent *report*.

I feel like people are only interested in it out of a freak show like curiosity . Laverne Cox doesn't get nearly the attention because she is actually trying to educate . people don't want that, they want the unveiling ! The gasp and gossip. I over heard my boss talking to a coworker about the Jenner magazine cover and he said " he is a pretty good looking woman" that says it all right there. I'm out at work to my boss by the way and it doesn't seem to stop anyone from saying the most insensitive stupid shit. I've turned into the pronoun police as well which I'm sure make people totally love having me around.

The public cannot be expected to understand it all in one moment, one account or even a handful of stories. This is a new discovery for many people, that is why they sound off the mark, and that's what all new experiences are like, they are at the beginning of the journey and we are the guides.

Try to consider "what percentage" of these bitter seethers weren't really just *projective, compensatory self-repressors* who either absorbed further-aggravated levels of transphobia at an early age, or were outright abused for expressing transgender ideation likewise at an early age back in the good old "dark-ages," either when there was no "insurance-acceptance," or when it was a political game to transition just the minimum token number enough to appease early activists--!

I like how you put "man style not trans style" in there, got me thinking about how we still think if we're trans we have to dress differently than cis gender men... I've always liked man clothes better just because they give more arm and leg room! I'm not a twig, I am bulky, and I can't fit into tweety bird sized cylinders of fabric! 😆

I'm hearing and reading a lot of negativity surrounding Caitlyn's public transition. As much as I'm sure a lot of us would like to have the wealth to be able to afford surgery like Caitlyn does, I personally do not envy her. In fact, I feel as though she has become the focus of a lot of hatred.
I try to imagine what it would be like for Caitlyn if she were feeling like she was carrying the weight of all trans people on her shoulders. Does she feel that way? She carried the weight of the U.S. on her shoulders during the Olympics. Given her celebrity, privilege and opportunity to make a global statement to Joe and Jane public who have likely never "met" a trans person, I think she's done a good job. I don't think she's going to go away either with her reality show airing in July. I just hope that she can focus some of her opportunity toward educating the public on the "reality" of trans lives or those of us who have survived in our lives.

I've been going on the defensive a lot since Caitlyn came out. On Twitter I usually go spider monkey on people, but I leave it off Facebook. Now, I am either educating my friends or finding that their friends aren't quite as nice and getting into heated talk because they're just so evil from the get go. Caitlyn is a double edged sword. Her coming out really brings the issue heavily into the spotlight with amazing, wonderful and super positive support, but it also brings out a very loud and hateful, vocal minority. I feel like I have to yell louder in order to drown them out and keep people from hearing the asinine propaganda the uneducated haters are spewing. It's a balance to maintain a higher, more coherent and educated stance and not drop into a blathering, name calling argument with an asshole.

Yes, trolls are ready to write opinions on any issues that challenge their belief systems. The articles written with hate or ignorance are hopefully as blatantly wrong to others as they are to us.

Jenner wasn't really a household name where I'm from in the UK but obviously her transition story has made a lot of waves.
It still kind of shocks me how defiant people can be about this issue and be unwilling to educate themselves. That being said though I'd like to point out it seems to be a vocal minority.
Whatever helps to keep this topic in the public conscious is a good thing.
P.S the bricks look great :P

I feel like trans is the new gay.
Back in the day gay people were barely ever seen in tv roles or movies. Then it was like boom! Ellen, queer as folk, queer eye for the straight guy, will and grace, etc... Now it seems like almost every show has a gay character and I feel like that has helped most people learn to accept gay people.
It seems like being trans is getting the same treatment now...and there may be some sideshow attractions along the way, trans characters in tv shows/movies that are really stereotypical, or exaggerated...things like that, but in the long run I think that the exposure will kinda do the same thing for being trans that it did for being gay.
So all in all I just really love to hear people talking about it. Just because if someone doesn't even think about what it must be like to be trans, how can they ever become supportive, and seeing representation in the media might eventually win over some hearts and minds.

I feel like Jenner's coming out has set the trans community back. People like Laverne Cox and Janet Mock are famous, but Jenner's fame is at a whole different level. Olympian, product endorser, motivational speaker, then the Kardashians come along. The reality show association is what makes it seem comical or like a publicity stunt to people. I think most of us are used to trans people coming out as teens or young adults. Jenner being 65 seems unusual. I watched the Diane Sawyer interview and it was clear that Jenner felt trans way back in the 70s, during the Olympics and in all the years up until now. The comments I see from people are mocking and cruel and hateful, because of who Jenner is and what Jenner stands for to them. I really feel that this is not a big win for the transgender community. I hope I'm wrong.
