Swingblade SAWMILL Build Ep.9 - Lumber Sizing, Belt Guard, Dismantling

  • I'm building a circular sawmill from scratch. The function of the mill is in its name "Swingblade" - the blade swings 90 degrees making it possible to cut both ways while moving the carriage up and down the log resulting in dimensional lumber in one pass. I built a chainsaw mill ten years ago and milled lumber that I used for my cabin / sauna house project. Then I built a bandsaw mill five years ago and used the cut lumber to build a partition in my barn I currently call my workshop. Both of them worked great, bandsaw mill was faster than chainsaw mill for sure. But I think I can make an even faster mill and swingblade sawmill in my opinion is just what I'm looking for. There are different types of swingblade sawmills, one type utilizes a railway system where the saw carriage rides on rails so both rails are in the way when loading the logs. I want to build a beam-type mill where the saw carriage is suspended on a beam over the log that sits on a couple of wedges so it doesn't roll off while cutting. There will be no need to clamp the log down. Cut depth and width adjustments are all going to be made on the sawmill beam end frames. And to top it off - it will basically be a portable sawmill due to its build properties but I think it's only going to sit in my yard regardless of the portability.
    In this video I'm making both vertical and horizontal board measuring systems which are basically stainless steel rulers attached to the sawmill with cut depth indicators or stoppers, that can be fixed on the base ruler and show the actual dimensions of the board. I'm also recycling an old vacuum pump belt guard which as it happens fits this sawmill almost perfectly with only minor modifications. In the end of the video the whole sawmill gets dismantled and last welds before cleaning and paint. I left the cherry on the top of this project - I still have the 6+m beam to make, the "easiest" part as the last thing to do. :) Wish me luck! And enjoy the video of course! Cheers!
    I'm gonna try and use basic tools like angle grinder as much as possible (except lathe) so I'm gonna enjoy this project even more. I hope you will too!
    This sawmill build is based on www.turbosawmill.com "Manual Mill" design and it is patent pending.

    I binged the last 5 videos, since I've been moving and missed them when you released them. I first started watching you with the wheel widening rig, and I'm continually impressed with your ability to follow through on your plan, making changes when necessary but not getting sidetracked and losing the plot on the build currently underway. I do wonder how many projects you have in mind, and how you can possibly keep them all straight, so that one doesn't bleed into another. You must've driven your mom mad doing stuff when you were a kid! My condolences to her for her sacrifices!

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  7 місяців тому +1

      I do get sidetracked sometimes (as I did with the 8x8 Argo) but try and finish all the projects I've started. I usually start building things I actually need to use at the homestead so when the motivation fades over the course of the build process there's still the need for the machine that keeps the project going. So it's kind of a failsafe built into the project.😀 I haven't asked my mum, I hope I wasn't a huge PIA.🤞🤣

    Coming together, make yourself some tapping blocks, just a block of steel with clearance holes for your taps, 4/5/6/8/10/12 > saves the wonky start when tapping.

    When farm life gets fully automated, Donn/DIY will be there filing the patents! Awesome; when you started I was really worried you might have over reached; my bad; somewhere in your vast resume, you must have worked around one of these babies for sure! Big machinery companies like IH, John Deere and Case should fear you mightily, Donn! Those "no user servicable parts" labels are mere snap for you to remove and turn obsolete!

    Your saw mill is coming together nicely. Whenever I make a nut plate I drill the hole enough oversize to be able to use a flat head machine screw to center the nut on the hole for welding. That way I never have to worry about the final bolt/machine screw dragging on the hole. You don't seem to have issues with this but my method eliminates any chance of this occuring.

      I was wondering how he would be able to have fine control with the ratchet.
      Great suggestion.
      I think you have the solution. How about use the winch to get it close and then have a worm driven fine adjustment? Maybe an expanding (worm driven screw) mounting plate under the winches? Just a thought. He then wouldn't have to rebuild the whole setup he worked so hard on. (Settle Down, people. 😅🤣😉).
