- I'm building a circular sawmill from scratch. The function of the mill is in its name "Swingblade" - the blade swings 90 degrees making it possible to cut both ways while moving the carriage up and down the log resulting in dimensional lumber in one pass. I built a chainsaw mill ten years ago and milled lumber that I used for my cabin / sauna house project. Then I built a bandsaw mill five years ago and used the cut lumber to build a partition in my barn I currently call my workshop. Both of them worked great, bandsaw mill was faster than chainsaw mill for sure. But I think I can make an even faster mill and swingblade sawmill in my opinion is just what I'm looking for. There are different types of swingblade sawmills, one type utilizes a railway system where the saw carriage rides on rails so both rails are in the way when loading the logs. I want to build a beam-type mill where the saw carriage is suspended on a beam over the log that sits on a couple of wedges so it doesn't roll off while cutting. There will be no need to clamp the log down. Cut depth and width adjustments are all going to be made on the sawmill beam end frames. And to top it off - it will basically be a portable sawmill due to its build properties but I think it's only going to sit in my yard regardless of the portability.
In this video I'm fabricating a 7 m / 23 ft long truss beam from scratch. I'm using 20x20mm rectangular tube as rails and 8mm rebar as crossbars and diagonals. I start by setting up a 160 mm / 6.29" round tube as a something to tension the 20x20 tubes against for welding, sort of a backbone of the whole project. Otherwise the rails will end up wavy and the sawmill will cut inaccurately. Then the rectangular tubes are tightened and rebar cut to needed lengths. I then tack weld on the cross members both on horizontal and vertical surfaces. And as a last operation I add diagonals. Everything is tacked together. Now I only need to heat up the weld areas before welding to avoid deformation caused by heat shrinkage. Preheating should lessen the effects of that. But we'll see. The overall weight of the beam should be around 38 kg-s according to the calculations. Once the beam is all welded it'll be a whole different story taking it apart - meaning: getting the 160mm tube out of the beam. It'll get tight, no doubt. But we'll manage! Wish me luck! Sorry, it is unintentional. I've explained how this sawmill works to best of my abilities in previous videos, there was even a skettch at some point, but I haven't done it in every video just to clarify it to new viewer and I should probably do it. But you'll definitely get an "A-haaa! That's how it works!" moment once the mill is finished then.👍Stay tuned!🙏

Not too clean but as clean as I'm able to keep it. It's really hard to keep clean and organized in a small room like this (35 m2 / 376 sq ft). Or is it just me...

Me neither. It looked like a super simple sawmill - few tubes here and there. And then I started fabricating it back in January this year and still going.🤣
I love the way you make complicated things look easy, I am sure that it is a combination of a great deal of forethought particularly around the tools that you have, the space and material. All in a barn on a farm, so many other great inventions have come from similar origins, you are walking with giants of engineering.
Cheers!🙏 It's just "Do what you can with what you have where you are" situation. Things have to get done one way or another. Being on a farm is a great place to start - less distractions than in a city somewhere. And lack of materials contributes to creativity as well.

I watched the first 4 videos months ago, and when the amphibious craft videos started popping up, I assumed you had abandoned this project. I was pleasantly surprised to have rediscovered the channel this morning and see several more videos on the sawmill! Nice work!

A tip: if you had rotated the truss by 90 degrees at minute: 18:10 in the video and then welded the struts from above, the truss would have become even more graded because then gravity would not have pulled the part down.. .😉
But a very good idea with the thick pipe in the middle and the tensioning of the four-mant pipes👍

thanks for the detailed video on building the beam , have plans to build a similar mill in the near future, just cant decide wether to use a single swinging blade or two blades set at 90 degrees, either way one pass nets a finished board .... keep the videos coming !
I wanted to keep this mill more simple and light weight. Thus one blade and manual options. Two blades definitely have their advantages.👍

Awesome build. I like it !! I used commercial bar joists to build a 21'4'' trailer for my Frontier bandsaw. A swingblade is certainly an interesting mill.

It's the main beam for my swingblade sawmill. The sawmill will cut bark beetle spruce, windfall and green logs to lumber so I can build several needed structures here at the homestead.👍 Gonna start assembling the sawmill upcoming week. Let there be rain-free days.🙏😀

20:15 should use tensioning cables regardless. Here's why. Metal stretches over time, that truss is going to be subjected continuously to stresses, so that's gonna be working against you constantly. With cables, regardless of the stretch you can always either adjust them or replace them once they've reached max stretch (as they do in bridges once every few years). One other piece of advice, make the carriage such that when you're not using, it has legs to support its own weight off the ground. Even if you place it at one end of the truss when at rest (which you should) it would still put unwanted tension on the truss when you're not using it.
Last piece of advice, if you're not using it for a long time (let's say half a year) then de-stretch the cables, if you choose to use them. Keeping the truss under stress is not gonna help you, itself it should be supported with some pieces of wood during that time.

Jamble aside, impressive build of a truss from common materials and straight too. Good idea to use the caliper, most people mark them down or put markings on a table and call it "good enough" and by the time they're done... it's more twisted than a twister. :)) Good work!

The cross bracing will stiffen. We will just have to wait and see since recording and editing videos is so time consuming .
Many bridges are constructed without cables. So clearly cables aren't a requirement. And I think you're overstating how frequently cables in bridges are adjusted and/or replaced. While it does happen, the main cables on my local suspension bridge are 66 years old and still going strong.

That beam is going to be a beast to move. It will be interesting to see if there is any deflection in middle as the saw carriage moves along it.
The beam should weigh 38 kg-s according to my calculations. Should be okay to move with two persons. Deflection will most certainly occur, the queation is how much deflection.🤔

Don, you should build a steel tumbler to remove rust from metal, so that its easier to weld and paint. You coud make it out of a length of pipe, some casters, and a gear motor. You could line it with rubber from a conveyor belt, as it can get noisy. You coud put crushed stone in it, or punched out metal from an iron worker that punches holes in steel.

That irrigation pipe is some good high carbon steel. 👍
This is actually mild steel pipe to my knowledge. It was used as part of heating system in a factory.
@@DonnDIY what I notice from the video was the spark color and how difficult it was to cut; heats up fast and eats abrasive like crackers.
Donn, it looks like your ambitions and ability are about to need a workshop expansion! I assure you , it seems to be a world wide phenomenon; however big you build your shop, there will come a moment when it is too small!. As a suggestion, just clear the entry way and do enough to create a heated zone at need and still function as the entry way to the larger barn- big doors and such. To your greater and greater successes!
I have a project was stumped on; how to build welded girders or trusses without the enormous table and jigs; you've Donn it! I would add an iron bender and chopper because I have both. but TY,TYVM! for the hint; I'm stealin' that one!

hey Donn, just an idea to align your big tubes (at least in the future), you take another section of tube, and make one cut all along the length, then you put it as a male inside both the tubes you want to join... best way to center part to other, plus it get more strength. Anyway, thanks for your amazing videos dude !
Yup, that's what I did in this video too. You couldn't see it properly due to the angle I took the video but I used a clamp I made years ago the same way by cutting it open lengthwise and using it to connect the two tubes.👍I had more of these tubes and used them as chimneys for my sauna build.

I would of used a string line and used a jack when doing the sides to help with the sag. Jack it up before welding in the side angles. But can't wait to see more.
I did that while getting the end caps on. Once the square tubes were stretched there was no need for the jack anymore.👍

You should take a couple of minutes to explain the properties of a tension bean & how it achieves those goals...
Square tube rails are stretched over the 160mm round tube making them straight and level creating good base where to start the truss beam build from.👍

🤣 Pretty much yeah. Channeling rage to work is really efficient. Especially after reading naysayers comments about what I can't do. Then I switch to "Hold my beer and watch this!" mode and get stuff done.😀

I read somewhere that stretching steel by about 3-5% is usually good enough amount of tension for this kind of thing, in case that helps anyone out.

My steel dealer only delivers full 6m lengths and with travel costs, so you want to order the whole thing straight away.
Otherwise a nice project, I build almost everything myself and restore 60-year-old agricultural machinery.
How did you get this 7m long beam out of your workshop?

Im guessing once the tube is removed you will add some adjustable braces in the centre?
First of all I'm gonna see what the truss beam does and how it behaves when suspended. Then probably add steel cable(s) with adjusters so I can pull up the possibly sagging center section.👍

I'm using the 160mm round tube for tensioning. And the square tubes are getting tensioned/stretched. I use square tubes as rails where the saw carriage will ride on. More surface area.👍

That looked like one tedious job. I notice you like to use re-bar a lot, why, is it stronger or cheaper? And how are you going to pre-heat that whole structure for welding, and or is that really necessary?

Rebar was stronger, cheaper and lighter material. All great things when building a truss beam. I'm gonna pre-heat only the weld area with a gas torch so that the weld doesn't bend the rail tube after it cools down. Otherwise I will just weld on a cold material and once the weld cools it'll pull on the tube. I hope it makes sense.😀
