lmao. I cried before you did. I turned 11 that day....and DW was my driver. He wrecked before they completed the first lap....thanks to the attrition that day he still finished 9th. I think he was 5 laps down though lol
hot damn brotha I remember this race, thanx... if memory serves 1991 was the year Junior got the 12 or whatever it was race penalty & they changed the number to 97 & named his wife Flossie the car owner during that stretch... Never seen anything like that before or since...
I don't watch modern day nascar go carts, however spend a lot of time watching all races prior to 2001 an older. No comparison, used to go to 4 races a year no interest whatsoever in stage races.So many changes so little fans Apparently I'm not alone .
Lap 243 of 334 only 2 cars on the lead lap and from 5th on back is 2 or more laps down. Now I love this era of racing it's what I grew up on in the late 80's early 90's but when people say that racing back then was a lot better than what we get today. Am I missing something? I think people remember the good things but forget the bad. In today's NASCAR we have more cars finish on the lead lap than ever before and we have some of the closest finishes ever. And people want to go back to this? Only two cars on the lead lap? And this isn't a freak thing thats how a lot of races ended back then less than 10 cars on the lead lap only 5 or 6 sometimes and not many cars lasted the entire race unlike now where few cars drop out of a race. Now if we could have the personalities we had back then in today's NASCAR that is something I would love but to say the racing was better back then than it is today I don't think so.
no lucky dogs. no wave arounds. lapped cars were on the bottom groove on restarts. cautions werent thrown unless absolutely necessary. much easier to stay on the lead lap today.
Well, the TV coverage was better too. About 1:00 into the race, they went back to the field for about a minute and showed the battle for 9th. All the drivers were getting TV time if they battled. NBC and FOX both just show the leader racing around the track.
the racing was very good back then. Cars actually raced door to door. Not one car down by the line and one up by the wall. That might technically be side by side, but it isnt door to door. The cars looked so much harder to handle, drivers today dont have their hands full as much as they did in 1991. So it might get spread out some, and sometimes a lot, but at least it was naturally occuring and not a bunch of cars on the lead lap because the rules and constant yelllows allowing it so. Amount of cars on lead lap wasnt as much an issue because we valued the drivers and the culture of the sport so much more. I hardly ever heard anyone complain about how many cars finished on the lead lap. Also, racing fans appreciated long green flag runs because it would create a lot of strategy when it came to pitting. Dont see many more gas gambling finishes anymore. I loved those type races. My driver DW won some like that, lost a few that way too lol. One other thing people dont even think about is that there was a myriad of things that could happen and did happen back then that you just dont see as often these days. Like the lead cars have engine problems. Which actually was a big issue in this very race, I remember tons of different leaders having issues. Bodine and Allison had good cars, but there were a bunch of good ones that blew up that day. Tires made a much bigger difference then too. Soooo much drama back then and everyone loved it.
Tim Brewers interview near the end when no one knew if Bodine had to pit smelled like "we know everyone's monitoring this so we ain't saying a word about whether we have to pit or not".
Do you have the rain shortened 1992 Southern 500? I've been looking for that for a while now. Thanks for posting this, I was at this race and have been wanting to see this.
I'm only about 55-60 laps into the race, but the thing I remember the most about this one was a confrontation between Dave Marcis and the normally mild-mannered Morgan Shepherd later in the race. Don't remember what lap it was, but if I remember right, it was closer to the end of the race.

It's becausethey didn't throw yellows for a peanut shell on the track..
