I can’t imagine Australia without John Farnham. I’m 51 and he’s been my favourite singer since I was a teenager. Tell that man, no matter how old he gets, he will always get the crowd. I truly hope he sings again. What an absolute legend.
Me too. I remember when I was really young and John was the poster in the TV Week. I wanted it so bad for my wall. But for some reason I was too embarrassed to ask. My nan gave it to me. I think she sensed that I wanted it. 😅

Farnham was fairly well known in my native Canada around Whispering Jack and Age or Reason, particularly among vocalists. North America is an odd market, however, in that you can't really crack it unless you're prepared to 'be there'. The first time I heard him I thought to myself: "How is this guy not one of the most famous people in the world?" And as good a singer as he is (and if not the best, he is the most versatile singer I have ever heard), he seems like an even better guy. James and Robert seem grounded, so John and Jill did something right. All the best.
Yea mate , very good point , but what is the upside apart from the money from cracking it in a place that would vote someone in to office like Trump .. who needs it , Cold Chisel went there to see if they could do the hard yards , and just came back to Australia .. and said no thanks
@@queenslander954 No real upside at all. It was just me as a young man trying to make sense of how talent and fame sometimes seem to be ‘strangely’ connected. Hey, Talent for Fame! That’s a Farnham track! For me, Farnham was also a gateway to all kinds of Australian music: Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel, Mondo Rock, etc. It was way before internet streaming, so I had to have a lot of CDs shipped to me. :)

I’ll never forget meeting John at the Adelaide formula 1 gp and John was driving in the celebrity race. I was only 11 at the time and it was probably the height of John’s fame and I was a massive fan. He was my favourite singer and I idolised him. My dad asked John if I could have a photo with him and he was so nice. He said “of course, come here mate!” and put his arm around my shoulder and was more than happy to pose for a photo. He was such a lovely man. It was one of those positive meet your hero’s moments. Edit I also have that photo framed in my hallway :)
I love this - as if we didn’t know already how kind and down to earth John Farnham was and still is. I cannot get over the fact he never had vocal lessons or really warmed up later in his career. WTAF! He’s such a natural talent. People need proper training to sing like John with his impeccable technique. Such a huge legend. I regret not ever getting to see him live 😢 All the best to the Farnhams 🥰❤️

I can sympathise with James and his health problems but it was so good to c him overcome the stigma of men not going to hospital, and I loved the way he has turned out to be a very humble guy just like his old man🎉🎉
The concert with Coldplay was called Sound Relief. It was for the Victorian Fires and Queensland Floods. I was there in Sydney and it was bloody awesome! A very young Taylor Swift performed there too at like 1pm. It rained too which made it even more fun. I’ve been lucky enough to see John perform live a few times in Sydney and he never disappointed his audience. The fact that he has a very normal marriage and has raised two down to earth kids, just makes him and Jill even more special.
This was wonderful. I am in my 80's and have loved Johns voice since the first time I heard him. Its good to see he has such lovely kids too. A beautiful interview.

Great episode lads. James seems like a ripper bloke and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Never heard a bad story about his father and he is loved by Australians all over the shop. From the Little River Band through to his solo career, he was an absolute weapon singer and entertainer.
Good luck on your new job, James. It's hard living with the scars from surgery for a bag. I had my Bladder removed on 5th June. Constant scar tissue massage helps to soften the area, vitamin E cream, or Paw Paw. That will fade it to skin tone in no time. This was my 3rd surgery around getting the bag. My first was 12 years ago, when I got my first bag, then had to make it permanent 6 months later, then 2 months ago, removal of the bladder. Better to be alive with a bag. You're not alone, mate. I know all your loved ones, family and friends alike, are really glad, and relieved you're still here, bag and all. So am I. It's good to see you getting back out there again. Well done! From a stranger, I'm so proud of you.
I didn't know of John until he joined little river band. One song and I was hooked! I've loved him ever since and I'm praying for a healing that will have him singing again. He IS the voice!❤
I have always loved John's music. He was obviously loved by his band, backup singers and crew. What a fantastic and interesting interview and so good to see John & Jill's family (including extended family) are so close. I have recently started watching UA-cam with all these singers and band "Reaction" videos. I can't get enough. The only ones I mainly watch are the John Farnham reactions. I get such a kick watching reactions from musicians and singers around the world, especially of the first song of his they watch, and now all of his music. All of them no matter age, race, male, female have all had the same reaction - they have all picked up on his character, humour, personality and his generosity of spirit with his musical family and his fans. Having said that, then there's "THE VOICE"!!! Their eyes light up each time they react to his songs and they are just astounded and so greatful that they've finally been introduced to his music and HIM, as a person. The look in their eyes and smiles on their faces says it all. I'm addicted watching these videos and listening to each and every new reaction. I wish all of the Farnham family/ies all the very best in health and love and thank you all for sharing "Your John" with the world.

James is just like his Dad, humble and very down to earth. It was quite obvious he was uncomfortable talking about his family which is very refreshing. My first crush was Johnny Farnham when I was 3 and 54 years later I still love him. He was the first concert I ever saw and the last time I saw him was 2019, I think at Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers. I sang and danced all night, he was phenomenal. James I am about to celebrate my 2nd anniversary of my colostomy on 25/8, definitely a head fuck, have really only stopped crying this month🤷🏼♀️Great chat Dan, thanks James you were fabulous darl. What a great interview!! I learned things I didn’t know and I have followed John’s career since day 1. I have loved the fact that John has always shown such humility, and a sense of normalcy and no ego. I saw John in concert so many times, including with Olivia and Tom Jones and was at the Celine Dion concert when John came out. Wow, what a surprise that was. I reckon that that's the hardest thing in the world, being related to someone famous. Are people really your friend, or using you. Unintentionally, that would always be in the back of all their minds about anyone, and everyone they meet who become friends. I've been a huge fan of John's since I was a kid. To me he has always been a father figure, as I never knew my father. But to actually have him as a Father had to be both awe-inspiring and difficult. I love the entire Farnham family most of all BECAUSE of their privacy. They're private people, not splashing all themselves in the public eye constantly. I respect the hell out of that.

Fun facts John and his family lived in the Dandenong area where I grew up. I know this because in high school we used to play sport against Greenslopes high school where John F went to high school did hear a few stories from people who he went to high school with Also johns brother came to my high school if I remember around 2 to 3 months I remember him very well I think the attention he received got a bit much for him.Also Johns sister used to own a shop in Dandenong which sold haberdashery (sewing and knitting and craft stuff I sometimes used to go there to have a quick chat with her.im a huge fan of John F liked him from the beginning of his career loved the interview with James

Me, having my 3rd child at 38. 😩🙄 Congratulations to John and Jill for doing a great job keeping the kid's grounded in trying to give them a pretty normal life. John was really a good guy and very caring. Especially to his good friend who happened to be his manager as well who went broke. He'd already retired from touring at that stage but came back for another round of concerts to help him out.

At 16/17 "Johnny Farnham" was in Adelaide, being managed by his first "dodgy" Manager, Darryl Sambell, who was a sales executive at my Mums work in the 60s. He was discovered by manager Darryl Sambell while playing with his band, Strings Unlimited. The band were supporting singer named Bev Harrell that evening at a gig in a Victorian country town. Harrell was also managed by Sambell, who said he saw potential in Farnham. "Johnny" would come to my Mums work in Adelaide, to wait for Daryl, to take his to the "showcases" for the night in Adelaide.. He then relocated to Melbourne, which is where his career took off..

Well that was a really good interview! I've always felt John was a really good man and hearing the way his son talks of him just confirms it. The only time I have felt bad watching John was when he was singing with Tom Jones. Jones has always been a scumbag and just always gave me the ick, even when I was a kid seeing him on the tv in the 60's. They are from the same era and Jones has always been hugely popular. John always had so much more class. And best wishes to young James. It takes a lot of courage to open up about our struggles. I hope he sees his father singing on stage again too.
Thank you for your honesty James. I spent 5 weeks in Cabrini dying from Crohn's Disease. Got the bag for a year then reconnected my plumbing. And I feel Men don't have enough education about how our bodies work. Thanks Danny for this great insight.

@@Dannysrants Lemme say this as well: it was great to see you both discuss the tendency for men to not discuss health issues. We have a 'she'll be right' approach, because we're not used to talking about it, because we don't know how to frame it in our minds. But when men talk to OTHER men about their health problems, the other men will have a reference framework to identify something they may be going through. For anyone that needs to know this, there are some basic signs to prompt you to see a doctor: if there's persistent pain that wasn't there before; if there's bleeding that wasn't there before; and if something changes shape compared to how it was before (especially moles). It's normal to fall at the hurdle of noticing something has changed and being besieged by worry because you don't know how to frame it in your mind, but seeing a doctor that can put it into context helps you gain control of your future. Final note for blokes: get used to checking your balls in the shower so you know what shape they are, so you can notice if there are any growths or changes in how they feel. Care for your nuts!

Nice interview, seems like a cool guy. UK wise I managed a band called Forever Never from about 2009 to 2012 & we were number 1 on Kerrang! TV for a good few weeks in 2010 with a cover of 'You're The Voice', it's mostly that tune he's known for over here I think. We used it as the lead track from a 1000 copy LTD edition covers EP we did alongside a headline tour of clubs & academies (150-400 cap type stuff) in October/November 2010. We did 100,000+ views on UA-cam with it which sounds small in 2024 but back in 2010 was a pretty big deal haha.
Thanks for this interview it was really interesting as a Brisbane girl I grew up love Johnny I remember one time he did a small gig at the Carindale shopping centre I took my daughter along with me she found gave been around 13 I was so excited that I hyperventilated and had to blow into a paper bag to settle my breathing down whilst I had her take the photos I was so disappointed with myself. But he was a true star like always and sang his wonderful songs and Yes he got the crowd 💖

I've never understood why people throw themselves all over celebrities. I mean, leave them alone. I worked for many years for the TAB in Melbourne so I saw tons of celebrities but not once did I mention who they were when they came up to put on a bet with me. I could tell that it was appreciated because it gave them the privacy that they crave. I would find in the end that they would hold a conversation with me that was around anything/everthing not encased by their fame. So make life refreshing for them people.
I met JF as a teenager just after he got married I was working as a shop assistant His parents lived in that area as well Maybe half an hour from Dandenong Victoria That was 51 years ago 😮 his youngest sister worked there part time and his little brother would come into the shop also. The older sister had long blonde hair and worked in town.

James is just like his Dad, humble and very down to earth. It was quite obvious he was uncomfortable talking about his family which is very refreshing. My first crush was Johnny Farnham when I was 3 and 54 years later I still love him. He was the first concert I ever saw and the last time I saw him was 2019, I think at Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers. I sang and danced all night, he was phenomenal. James I am about to celebrate my 2nd anniversary of my colostomy on 25/8, definitely a head fuck, have really only stopped crying this month🤷🏼♀️Great chat Dan, thanks James you were fabulous darl. What a great interview!! I learned things I didn’t know and I have followed John’s career since day 1. I have loved the fact that John has always shown such humility, and a sense of normalcy and no ego. I saw John in concert so many times, including with Olivia and Tom Jones and was at the Celine Dion concert when John came out. Wow, what a surprise that was. I reckon that that's the hardest thing in the world, being related to someone famous. Are people really your friend, or using you. Unintentionally, that would always be in the back of all their minds about anyone, and everyone they meet who become friends.
I've been a huge fan of John's since I was a kid. To me he has always been a father figure, as I never knew my father. But to actually have him as a Father had to be both awe-inspiring and difficult.
I love the entire Farnham family most of all BECAUSE of their privacy. They're private people, not splashing all themselves in the public eye constantly. I respect the hell out of that.

Fun facts John and his family lived in the Dandenong area where I grew up. I know this because in high school we used to play sport against Greenslopes high school where John F went to high school did hear a few stories from people who he went to high school with Also johns brother came to my high school if I remember around 2 to 3 months I remember him very well I think the attention he received got a bit much for him.Also Johns sister used to own a shop in Dandenong which sold haberdashery (sewing and knitting and craft stuff I sometimes used to go there to have a quick chat with her.im a huge fan of John F liked him from the beginning of his career loved the interview with James

Fantastic interview - James & Robbie are definitely grounded. Jill & John should be so proud of how "normal" their famous family is. The Farnham family are all so down to earth. Congratulations to John and Jill for doing a great job keeping the kid's grounded in trying to give them a pretty normal life.
John was really a good guy and very caring. Especially to his good friend who happened to be his manager as well who went broke.
He'd already retired from touring at that stage but came back for another round of concerts to help him out.

John may not have “made it” in the US in the traditional sense, but the number of people in the US who have done reaction videos on UA-cam, and the number of people who have viewed them, of John’s songs, especially the video of him singing “Help” with the Melbourne symphony orchestra, is huge.

At 16/17 "Johnny Farnham" was in Adelaide, being managed by his first "dodgy" Manager, Darryl Sambell, who was a sales executive at my Mums work in the 60s.
He was discovered by manager Darryl Sambell while playing with his band, Strings Unlimited. The band were supporting singer named Bev Harrell that evening at a gig in a Victorian country town. Harrell was also managed by Sambell, who said he saw potential in Farnham.
"Johnny" would come to my Mums work in Adelaide, to wait for Daryl, to take his to the "showcases" for the night in Adelaide..
He then relocated to Melbourne, which is where his career took off..

Well that was a really good interview! I've always felt John was a really good man and hearing the way his son talks of him just confirms it. The only time I have felt bad watching John was when he was singing with Tom Jones. Jones has always been a scumbag and just always gave me the ick, even when I was a kid seeing him on the tv in the 60's. They are from the same era and Jones has always been hugely popular. John always had so much more class. And best wishes to young James. It takes a lot of courage to open up about our struggles. I hope he sees his father singing on stage again too.
Thank you for your honesty James. I spent 5 weeks in Cabrini dying from Crohn's Disease. Got the bag for a year then reconnected my plumbing. And I feel Men don't have enough education about how our bodies work. Thanks Danny for this great insight.

I live in Tassie and remember the last concert of Johns that my daughter and I went to at the launceston casino grounds, and it was pissing down! Got totally drenched but loved every minute.

@@Dannysrants Lemme say this as well: it was great to see you both discuss the tendency for men to not discuss health issues. We have a 'she'll be right' approach, because we're not used to talking about it, because we don't know how to frame it in our minds. But when men talk to OTHER men about their health problems, the other men will have a reference framework to identify something they may be going through.
For anyone that needs to know this, there are some basic signs to prompt you to see a doctor: if there's persistent pain that wasn't there before; if there's bleeding that wasn't there before; and if something changes shape compared to how it was before (especially moles).
It's normal to fall at the hurdle of noticing something has changed and being besieged by worry because you don't know how to frame it in your mind, but seeing a doctor that can put it into context helps you gain control of your future.
Final note for blokes: get used to checking your balls in the shower so you know what shape they are, so you can notice if there are any growths or changes in how they feel. Care for your nuts!

Nice interview, seems like a cool guy. UK wise I managed a band called Forever Never from about 2009 to 2012 & we were number 1 on Kerrang! TV for a good few weeks in 2010 with a cover of 'You're The Voice', it's mostly that tune he's known for over here I think. We used it as the lead track from a 1000 copy LTD edition covers EP we did alongside a headline tour of clubs & academies (150-400 cap type stuff) in October/November 2010. We did 100,000+ views on UA-cam with it which sounds small in 2024 but back in 2010 was a pretty big deal haha.
I thought Farnham did well in the UK. What a great guy James is chip off the old block

Thanks for this interview it was really interesting as a Brisbane girl I grew up love Johnny I remember one time he did a small gig at the Carindale shopping centre I took my daughter along with me she found gave been around 13 I was so excited that I hyperventilated and had to blow into a paper bag to settle my breathing down whilst I had her take the photos I was so disappointed with myself.
But he was a true star like always and sang his wonderful songs and Yes he got the crowd 💖

Really enjoyed this getting James' perspective of his family life and their life with the fantastic John Farnham. I am a huge fan from day 1. Wonderful insight, but Danny, you seriously need to slow down your speech. You talk faster than a race caller. Not good for interviews. Pull it back a gear or two and it will be awesome.

I've never understood why people throw themselves all over celebrities. I mean, leave them alone.
I worked for many years for the TAB in Melbourne so I saw tons of celebrities but not once did I mention who they were when they came up to put on a bet with me. I could tell that it was appreciated because it gave them the privacy that they crave. I would find in the end that they would hold a conversation with me that was around anything/everthing not encased by their fame. So make life refreshing for them people.
I met JF as a teenager just after he got married I was working as a shop assistant His parents lived in that area as well Maybe half an hour from Dandenong Victoria That was 51 years ago 😮 his youngest sister worked there part time and his little brother would come into the shop also. The older sister had long blonde hair and worked in town.
