Ella's recording is a cover. If you have heard this song before, it was likely a cover since the song was introduced by Vivienne Segal on December 25, 1940, in the Broadway production of the Rodgers and Hart musical Pal Joey. This song has become a standard recorded by many, many singers, both male and female, since 1940.
For more contemporary female singers who sing very well in this style, I recommend you check out Roberta Gambarini, Diana Krall, Samara Joy, Carol Kidd, Eliane Elias, Stacey Kent, Eva Cassidy, Christy Baron, Melody Gardot, Tierney Sutton, Jane Monheit, Angela Galuppo, and Norah Jones, among many others. The music genres in which you will find these and similar singers are called vocal jazz, jazz ballads, standards, and the Great American Songbook.
Written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart for the musical “Pal Joey” ...While Rodgers is better known now for his work with Oscar Hammerstein, his work with Hart was the gold standard: “Blue Moon,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Isn’t it Romantic”....their catalog is filled with diamonds and pearls.
Frank Sinatra & Ella Fitzgerald are my two, favorite singers. I have other artists that I adore; But, if I was isolated somewhere... They would come out on top, because there's a TIMELESSNESS about their music that no longer exists. 🙂
Nobody was as good as Ella. Even Sinatra said she was the only singer that made him nervous when he sang with her. Thank you. I agree with you about the music now. I think it has no heart, no soul, no love of the craft.😢

Simply beautiful.
So beautiful. I was so surprised just how beautiful it is.
My absolute favourite Ella Fitzgerald song, seven minutes of sheer magic!! 😁😁🇬🇧

My musical tastes are varied & my Spotify lists reflect just that. You NEVER know what type of music I'll play from one day to the next. 🙂
It’s in many ways her best recorded song

I personally think that her version of THE NEARNESS OF YOU - sung with Louis Armstrong, is one of the MOST ROMANTIC songs that I've ever heard.
