I could listen to her all day long and I am not from this era but could not live without her music! Dig in! There are about 25 greatest hit albums, pick one, you can't go wrong!
Ella Fitzgerald is absolutely without doubt my very favourite female singer. Bar NONE!! Delve into her 'Songbooks' and her works with Louis Armstrong. You will NOT be disappointed. 😁😁😷🇬🇧
You can hear her ‘horn-like’ inspirations form Louis. They played off each other so well. Both had such joy and lightness in their voices. I adore them. Mack the Knife is a wonderful song that she does incredibly well.
@@iamqueenkk They are nothing like one another yet there was great chemistry between them. I'm particularly fond of their duet on Summertime. Love for Sale is another great song of Ella's. However, everything she sang was great!
Ella's vocal range was such that it was said that she could shatter glass. She sang with a big band in the 30's I think and in the 40;s. Miss Otis regrets, and Mack the Knife are just a couple of her hits for you to listen to.
Ella is just the best! I am in my late 30s and Ella is my favorite singer....My aunt introduced me to her as a kid and I just fell in love with her smooth voice. Classic! ❤
You understand now why young Angelina was so much inspired by Ella s jazz rendition: it touched her little heart for a lifetime and sealed her musical passion for jazz and blues with a gental kiss from the lips of her legendary idols. Thank you, Mace, for sharing with us your interest for that kind of past musical voices that Angelina modernizes with such candor and authority!
Try reacting to her version of Mack the Knife where she forgot the lyrics to the song and turned it into one of the most memorable live performances of her career.
I was fortunate enough to see her perform live. Even in her sixties she could still bring it. I've heard Angelina Jordan and she's no Lady Ella. Do a deep dive into Ella's music and I bet you will agree.
One of the absolute highlights of my life was listening to a concert with Ms. Fitzgerald and her combo along with the San Francisco Symphony in the late 1980s towards the end of her touring career. She sounded EXACTLY like her records, she was AMAZING. I have more CDs of her recordings than any other artist.
Ahhh .. Ella. What you really need to hear is "Summertime". There is a live version on UA-cam. I was told once that you haven't lived until you've heard Janis Joplin's version, and I say you can't leave the planet without hearing Ella's.
Have we ever HEARD of Ella Fitzgerald?!!! Gah! A perfect voice, perfect timing, perfect pitch. It's painful to think there is anyone alive who wouldn't have at least heard of her, if not having heard her. Her heyday was late forties to sixties, and it was music perfectly of its time, not before it. I LOVE Ella.
I believe that George and or Ira Gershwin said they didn’t realise how good their songs were until they heard them sing by Ella. I love all of the jazz standards sung by her and her songbooks such as ‘Ella Swings Gently with Nelson’ is absolutely gorgeous. What a voice.
Ella Fitzgerald was THE best singer of her era (1940s - 1960s) - male or female. She was the Queen of Jazz and an all-time great singer. Her duets with Louis Armstrong are legendary. I’m so glad you did a video on this musical giant.
@@UnderhillKoufax Yes it is a big claim, but I stand on it. No-one comes even close to her talent or ability. There is Ella, then there is daylight between her and today's so called singers!!
@@robertrodrigues7319, I think Ella is one of the best of all-time, but there are so many great singers throughout history. @@UnderhillKoufax You canna compare Ella to operatic singers. They sing the composers' notes, and have to observe pretty strict conventions both in voice production and note choice. Popular singers, particularly jazz singers have free rein from those restraints. I know that Ella could never do all the things that Callas, Sutherland or any other top operatic singer could do. On the other hand, they couldna do the half of what Ella does. Furthermore, I've not heard any other popular singer do all that Ella does so effortlessly. Yes, there are other great popular singers out there, but Ella stands above them all, a combination of great voice, complete control over it, and incredible musicality and creativity. And no, promising though Angelina Jordan is, she's not yet in Ella's class, and would be the first to admit it.
Glad you appreciate Lady Ella. Yes amazing her voice is instrumental. "Summertime " was a big hit too. Since you mentioned James Bond check out Shirley Bassey "Goldfinger " She's and the song are great .
She was active from the 1930's until the early 90's, one of the best if not the best singers this country has ever produced. She began when she enter competition on amateur night at the Apollo Theater as a dancer but when she saw a competitive dancer before who was really good she got cold feet and wouldn't go on. The staff was in a panic because the needed an act to fill the program so the asked her if she could sing and she responded "a little" She won and the rest is history. I have a lot of her music.
I heard Ella live in the mid 80s, still in fantastic voice. Also heard Sarah Vaughan live around that time, another amazing singer - try her in Misty, Tenderly, It Never Entered My Mind, etc
My favorite song from Angelina s repertoire! I will add to that one I m a Fool to Want You, Speak Softly Love (from the movie The Godfather) and When We Were Young.
Ella Fitzgerald did a number of performances with Louis Armstrong. She also did a duet with Karen Carpenter. She sang from the 40's at least through the 60's. Known for her scat singing.
Why is everybody talking about somebody else on an Ella Fitzgerald video? More Ella, please. 💜 Seriously can't pick a favorite, but she has charming duets with Louis Armstrong (try _Cheek to Cheek_ ) and *god level* scat skills (try _Flying Home_ w/c is pure scatting).
Best vocalist to have ever lived. I live all of her song books. Check out a contemporary jazz vocalist who is also very good, Diana Krall. She does a great cover of Cry Me a River. Please check out these: anything Nina Simone, Peggy Lee -- Black Coffee and Carmen McCrae -- Take Five with Dave Brubeck. Dave Brubeck also is awesome on all of his music - instrumental.
In this day and age people can mimick orignal artist voices or sounds they really don't get the true soul of where the originator's creation came from. Something is still missing from those who imitate.
Ella's career started in the 30's and she continued until 1993, her last performance. Why do folk start thinking of Angelina Jordan after listening to Ella. She is nothing like Ella, and nowhere near her in ability - although she is still too young yet for anyone to know how she will develop. She has a remarkable contralto voice, but she hasn't so far showed a lot of range or real originality and creativity. I don't see much similarity with Angelina apart from the fact that Angelina has a deep contralto voice. Ella also sings in the contralto range but can go much higher than I've heard Angelina sing. Angelina certainly hasn't the absolute control and smoothness that Ella has.
Yes Angelina covers this, live and on cd.cd version better sound quality. Now here are a few names to whet your whistle. Billie holiday, Dinah Washington, Shirley Bassey. From that era. By no means covers that era. But a good starting point. Thanks for your reactions.
Great to witness you discovering Ella's peerless artistry. You should try her in Duke Ellington's Lush Life, or sophisticated jazzy The Midnight Sun, or any number of her renditions from the songbooks of Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, etc.

The distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion. A.Einstein. Music, in this case with Ella, transcends physics and gives a more poetic/spiritual meaning to that sentence.
