The Broadway 1939 lyric as originally written was even more hair raising...and has been revised ever since--
"Lost my heart, but what of it?
      My mistake, I agree.
He's a laugh, but I love it because the laugh's on me."

Yeah man, this is one of the things I miss most about that bygone age. The ability of lyricists like Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin, and so many others to write lyrics that were sophisticated, thoroughly conversational, yet completely true to the very particular emotion being painted by the composer. The first half of the twentieth century was a heroic time in American song, truly a golden age.

Matthew Hubbard so I listened to this for the first time when I was 16 and in love for the first time in a British film called the history boys. But it only featured first half of this song. only now, 15 years later; I listen to the second half: “wise at last; my eyes at last; are cutting you down to your size at last.” This woman was a goddess

I'm a retired voice teacher, and my mother worked as a radio and nightclub singer, so I can offer an authoritative opinion ; ) --Ella is the best popular singer of all time. Beautiful tone, excellent diction, perfect intonation, and perfect phrasing, along with a warm personality. Plus she could swing. I can't think of another singer who brought all these qualities together in quite the same way. But a few came close. Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney, Peggy Lee, and Sarah Vaughan come to mind....

Has everything: tone, timing, intonation, phrasing, enunciation, interpretation etc. There are great other performances by Ella with These Foolish Things being up to this standard too. My jazz artist parents would play her LP's and I would stand right in front of the big walnut hifi speaker and just absorb the vibrations from her. IMO, there is no other vocalist past or present (and I've been closely listening for close to 60 years) who can even stand in the same room with her. I think she dropped down from another planet.

This is of course one of the best not operatic performances ever - ever. Lyrics by Hart are incredible. Music by Richard Rogers. Ella's phrasing, diction, interpretation, and vocal beauty can hardly be bettered. The backing is a very high standard, too. This song stopped a colleague in her steps when I played this version at work - she could hardly move. The interesting thing is the song can be seen in a heterosexual light or homosexual. Lorenz was gay and short. Rogers mostly wrote the music first and Hart the lyrics after. Hart is up with the best lyricists last century - and probably the best though Cole Porter, Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Oscar Hammerstein are snapping at his heels. See other songs by Ella especially These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You).

I first thought Rufus Wainwright's version of this song was my favorite. Until I heard Ella. This is my favorite version of one of the greatest song's written by Rodgers & Hart. The lyrics are so HUMAN, it's one of those songs that never get old. It has human DNA. And, it only mentions the word 'love' like once? Super piano that gets better as the song goes on. She sings this so effortlessly. Sinatra liked to sing these type songs - where the 'first person' tells of how the object of affection has flaws, but even saying 'never again', they give in to the right person. "Burned a lot, learned a lot" but, that is part of the human condition. Some of the best lyrics I've heard in a song, much like "Wee Small Hours", Sinatra's version. I often wonder if Rodgers and Hart 'knew' that what they had written was a classic? I mean, even today, it's RARE to hear such emotion in lyrical content. It must be from a real life experience. No matter, this is greatness performing greatness. And, it matters not what era, what year it was written. A person of any age can relate (and enjoy) this. This is where the bar is set for songwriting, and in this case, vocals as well. Ella is hard to top. Beautiful. Rufus does an excellent job, as well and his version has a superb piano part behind his vocals. Oh, and the intro just makes you want to hear 'the story'.

Y'know what? I've searched for years for anyone else who's recorded this same song, the FULL SEVEN MINUTES FIFTEEN SECONDS. I have yet to find any.
Yes, there's other recordings. Doris Day, about 2 m 42 s. Lady Gaga/Tony Bennet, 3 m 20 s. Kristin Chenoweth, 5 m. Linda Ronstadt, 4 m 26 s. And it goes on. Almost anyone who's a good singer has done this song, especially if its in their genre. Never ever have I seen anyone else do the FULL 7 m 15 s.
It would be really fabulous if someone could do this. I'm not really up to date on who's up & coming and such. My music tastes pretty much stop mid 70s. I mostly focus on country/bluegrass now (old and new)
Huh, just had a random remembering. Dolly Parton has not covered this song.

Donny Rickles Jr., you've got the knack for the insult comedy genre. I get it, and I wish I could laugh, but alas, I find insult-based humor barely bearable even when the insult artists are targeting themselves--the only truly funny targets. When they are targeting others, the art form comes across as misanthropic, social insecurity, or at best, as poor home training. Still, Cicero might well have been speaking of Ella Fitzgerald's elegant and unforgettable voice when he said, "In memoriam mortuorum vita viventium"--the life of the dead lives in the memory of the living." Long live Ella!

Simply divine. My mother has been one of her biggest fans ever, for sure. It´s now decades after both have passed away that I really understand why. What a voice, what a personality! And what a song. It tells a whole novel within 7 minutes.

Enchanted by her voice... And the song,.. The lyrics, soo good, though, must have disturbed some listeners back in the 50's ;)

@Alex K I was thinking the same thing; those were pretty racy lyrics for that era!

That's what I was thinking when I first heard it! 'Horizontally speaking, he's at his very best.' Now that's sassy. Lol.

I'm sure this version was not released until much, much later! Cole Porter was known for his racy lyrics. In "You're the top," there's a line, "you're the top / you're the pants on a Roxy usher." And in "I get a kick out of you," the original is "Some get a kick from cocaine."

Not to be a perfectionist, but at 3:15 in, the subtitle should say, "I'm mean a lot," not "I mean a lot." But Ella, she was perfect. And the music and lyrics are beyond compare.

    • @James-gk8ip
      @James-gk8ip 3 роки тому +2

Actually "I mean a lot" is correct. It means "oh boy, I'm telling you, a LOT".. Kind of a Yiddishism, as in so many songs in the Great American Songbook. But it's right. Ella's not the mean one; the guy turns out to be the mean one. To call herself mean would make no sense. She's the victim.

Such a beautiful complex and mellow voice Miss Ella had....listening to her was like being carried along on a gentle stream..... I was born in 1969 and have been listening to her since I was a young child, thankfully being raised by older relatives her who recognized her talents and shared "old time" music even with the kids in our family 💜 🦋💜🦋💜🦋💜🦋💜🦋
