- Born in Barbados in 1953, reggae guitarist Dennis Bovell (sometimes known simply as Blackbeard) was one of the key figures on the London reggae scene of the late '70s and early '80s, not only as a solo artist but also as a producer. The band Bovell co-founded in the mid-'70s, Matumbi, was one of England's first self-contained reggae bands, and also one of the best; in addition, Bovell released several albums of solo dub experiments, which often featured jazz-pop keyboardist Nick Straker and producer Tony Mansfield (Captain Sensible, New Musik), both old school chums. As Blackbeard, Bovell released Strictly Dub Wize in 1978; he quickly became involved in production work for experimental post-punkers like the Slits and the Pop Group. I Wah Dub appeared in 1980, carrying on Bovell's eclectic sensibilities...
Me and friends listened to this album when it came out, and I must say it's still excellent, it's one of the best Dub Album ever made. Dennis Bovell and all musicians...so great. Recommended albums is Linton Kwesi Johnson, for example LKJ in dub- same great folks playing and producing. Super!
Listened to this 88 and '89 on a friend's radio cassette. Didn't know the artist or album. Nice stumble!
Wicked album 40 years later sounds even better
Dennis Bovell what a top artist and innovative producer! Very nostalgic hearing this album. The 70s had some of the greatest reggae dub EVER! I also loved his production sounds on The Slits debut album!
Legendary. I still have my TDK 90 (bad copy😄) of this. It has positiva ambient collection album on flip side. Had it since 93ish... Bless up and have a beautiful life.. 😄🇯🇲🇪🇹🇬🇧
Simply one of the best and most original dub albums ever made.
