A film created by the Boeing Company to promote the new 747 aircraft, "Assignment 747" features one of the most basic devices known to man to sell a new product -- sex appeal in the form of gorgeous blonde actress Bernadette Pelletier. Pelletier's "dumb blonde" character asks all the stupid questions and -- in a cringe-worthy gag at the end of the film -- manages to blow her assignment. Features many different airline liveries including Pan Am, TWA, Japan Air Lines, Italia, Lufthansa, Air France, and more.
The Boeing 747 is a wide-body commercial jet airliner and cargo aircraft, often referred to by its original nickname, Jumbo Jet, or Queen of the Skies. Its iconic "hump" upper deck along the forward part of the aircraft make it among the world's most recognizable aircraft, and it was the first wide-body produced. Manufactured by Boeing's Commercial Airplane unit in the United States, the original version of the 747 had two and a half times greater capacity than the Boeing 707, one of the common large commercial aircraft of the 1960s. First flown commercially in 1970, the 747 held the passenger capacity record for 37 years.
The four-engine 747 uses a double deck configuration for part of its length. It is available in passenger, freighter and other versions. Boeing designed the 747's hump-like upper deck to serve as a first class lounge or extra seating, and to allow the aircraft to be easily converted to a cargo carrier by removing seats and installing a front cargo door. Boeing did so because the company expected supersonic airliners (development of which was announced in the early 1960s) to render the 747 and other subsonic airliners obsolete, while the demand for subsonic cargo aircraft would be robust well into the future. The 747 was expected to become obsolete after 400 were sold, but it exceeded critics' expectations with production passing the 1,000 mark in 1993. By January 2015, 1,502 aircraft had been built, with 35 of the 747-8 variants remaining on order.
The 747-400, the most common passenger version in service, has a high-subsonic cruise speed of Mach 0.85-0.855 (up to 570 mph or 920 km/h) with an intercontinental range of 7,260 nautical miles (8,350 mi or 13,450 km). The 747-400 passenger version can accommodate 416 passengers in a typical three-class layout, 524 passengers in a typical two-class layout, or 660 passengers in a high density one-class configuration. The newest version of the aircraft, the 747-8, is in production and received certification in 2011. Deliveries of the 747-8F freighter version to launch customer Cargolux began in October 2011; deliveries of the 747-8I passenger version to Lufthansa began in May 2012. The 747 is to be replaced by the Boeing Y3 (part of the Boeing Yellowstone Project) in the future.

This is a very good and interesting promotional film. I am probably at the same age as your mother were, and I do remember the kind of tape recorder that she uses in the film, and the overall impressions of the time. In 1994 I flew around the world on behalf of a big supplier to the airline industry, filming their stations. Great times! Thanks.

I'll ask her, but she was hired as an actress for the film. The only other aerospace type of acting she did was she was in one of the opening scenes of Star Trek the Motion Picture. She did a lot of commercials in the 1970s, and bit extra parts in movies and tv like Lou Grant, Blue Thunder, Down and out in Beverly Hills, and several Sunoco commercials too.

@ATCkeepsUsafe Google and OS-INT in today's wired/information age can prove or confirm nearly anything in the everyday civilian world in a very, very quick time frame. And knowing Facebook tricks to employ in searching just it's domain alone can provide a great deal of detail to confirm/disprove elsewhere. He's almost certainly NOT lying and YOU have issues of abandonment/love/hate that are sick and pretty confusing for you, OBVIOUSLY.
[police, firemen, military, plumbers (from sewage diseases) physicians, politicians (who pay all these people), garbage men (again, diseases), surgeons (slightly different daily stuff than a physician while both are medical doctors), pharmacists, delivery drivers, and equipment makers for those professions. As for your ATC SELF AGGRANDIZING SCREEN NAME- plane manufacturers (they try?), airline stewardesses, airline mechanics, and PILOTS--- every single profession keeps us safe as well- some MUCH more so than an ATC, who will eventually become relics themselves as software becomes more robust and self-healing/diagnostically with AI and specifically deep neural networks. ATC keeps us safe. HMM. A big pronouncement from a little man-boy who needs self-affirmation and hopefully (maybe!!!) confirmation from others!? You are an obvious danger, psychologically. Screw you, you little man-boy-child.

I was landing in New York from London on a 747 one day c.1980 and just as we touched down the bathroom door flew open and a Punk with a 12" orange Mohawk struggled out into the isle. He 'climbed' toward the back of the plane against the tremendous G-force, grabbing at the seats as the deceleration pulled him toward the front of the plane. He was leaning in at a steep angle. He soon realized that if he leaned in real hard, like 45º, he could let go of his handholds and just balance against the forces pulling at him. In triumph he raised both fists high and made a silent yell, his mouth agape!
    The whole plane applauded.
That's how flying used to be.

in 1st grade i got a book called Jumbo Jets from the library book-mobile. it was written in 1969 and it was all about the 747. i must have checked it out a dozen times.
my wife is from Denmark and i got to fly a 747 ONCE, on the way home (out of maybe 5-6 trips). i flew an MD-11 on the way there on that trip.
its a shame that it was never really put into much service (not that I ever saw) for domestic flights. now the big planes from Boeing still fly mostly international in my experience and a LOT of Airbus stuff on the route to Europe that i go.
i get a lot of time in the 737 (all of its variants) flying domestically with the lower cost airlines that suit me just fine.

40 years ago I happened upon the building where the 747s were assembled near Seattle, Washington. To say that building was *HUGE* would be an understatement. From the highway view I had to that building, the open area of that building revealed many 747s parked there, looking toy-sized in comparison to the massive size of that building.
I checked some online sources, which says that building is the biggest in the world by volume. Here are some specs for that Boeing Everett Factory: 13,385,378 m3 (472,370,319 cu ft) and covers 98.7 acres (39.9 ha).

The designers of the 747 hit the target better than expected because everyone thought that supersonic was the way to go. Over 1500 747s compared to 13 Concordes. The pictures are from the second 747 and up. The first model (City of Everett, RA-001) had test equipment.

The Boeing 747 service on the world's airlines, did well in 1970, but in early 1971 and 1972 came the other competitors 747 aircraft, the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar and McDonnell Douglas DC-10.
Eastern Air Lines is the first airline to withdraw its 747, and replaced by L-1011 in 1972, as also with Delta Air Lines also withdrew its 747 and replacement with L-1011 in 1976.
The Boeing 747 is the best aircraft wide capacity in 1970.
And now there is more 747s today, only 2 airline in the United States. continue to operate with 747, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, Delta's 747 he returned to service in 2008 but will be removed from the 2017 or 2018 and will be replaced by the new Airbus A350. And then United Airlines would be the last of the 747 operator in the US, and do not know if airline withdraws or not.
1970 was the best time in the US airline and the world that operated with Boeing 747.

In the beginning ( 1969 ) when the big airlines like Pan Am, BOAC, Air France and others acquired the 747 many smaller airlines like Alitalia, Olympic, Aer Lingus also acquired the 747 for image to compete with the big boys and look good. The smaller airlines soon found out how un economical the 747 was on thinner routes and opted out of the 747 and acquired the Tristar or DC-10 instead. The 747 was and still is not economical for short and medium routes, but only economical for long international routes. Unfortunately with the advent of the newer Boeing and Airbus twin engine wide bodies the L-1011, DC-10, MD-11 went bye bye. The 747 is a good machine, sorry to see it disappear from the skies, just as I now miss the Tristar, DC-10, 707, DC-8, Convair 990A, VC-10, and my favorite Super Constellation.

I saw what I thought was the first flight test at Boeing Paine field, I would have been 5 to six years old? It was a huge deal, it had a small plane following it. I think there were no markings on the 747.

Frank, I got my answer by looking through the comments. So your mom should be about 71 to 74 yrs of age by now, if she is still with us.

@3:25 she said she was disappointed because she thought it would be bigger....well, hang on to your hat ma’am because we’re not finished yet (this being circa 1970)....give us about another 40 years and fast forward to about 2010, because your assignment in 2010 will be to do a report on the Boeing 747-800 series of airplane...the four engines will be touting 110,000 pounds of thrust ‘EACH’ with enough firepower to crush the wheel chocks (just in case the ramp personnel forgot to unchock the wheels)

I did enjoy watching this mostly but Mysogeny is live and well in the comments! I'm sure the makers of this video thought 'silly dumb blondes' would be stuck in the galley. Thankfully there are all female flying crews in command of this beauty, although probably mostly freighter versions now.

Nope. They literally said "no air pollution" referring to the black smoke you'd see on older jets. The 50% figure is about noise pollution.
