Napalm Death Rare Lee and Bill 1989 What's That Noise BBC Pt 1

- Napalm Death appearing on a 'Musical Education Programme' for children on BBC TV back in 1989! Part 2 is even crazier. The show also featured Cliff Richard and Patrick Moore from The Sky At Night!?
This lineup only lasted 2 years and is still the best grindcore lineup of all time.
Grindcore goat!!!
I think that lee dorian has better vocals then barney
@@elzbietasomska7256 barney for the death metal napalm, cant stand when he sings grindcore era napalm death
That's what you think.
Yeh Mate, the filthiest!!! Saw Carcass Years after with Bill Steer, but miss Mike and Lee!!!
I was genuinely impressed by this. The fact that they gave Napalm Death a spot on their show is good enough, but that they allowed them a chance to explain some of the most commonly misunderstood things about metal (i.e. growled vocals) without making it too gimmicky or taking the piss really impressed me. Kudos to the BBc for this.
punk. cause its grindcore. punks did "growled vocals" in 70s while metal bands screaming high back then like little girls choir
@@ultimatehistoryofcgi8897 It's metal. Cope
@@kasogamer lol brainded
@@ultimatehistoryofcgi8897 punks didn’t do growled vocals back in the 1970s. Where did you get that information?
Actually, Napalm Death were savagely criticized back in the day for this BBC appearence. Too mainstream, people argued.
Bill Steer is fucking epic, he is the sound of Carcass and you can hear it clearly in Napalm before he left.
Easily one of the most influential Guitarists in Extreme music his riffs are always perfectly crafted and the solos are incredible
I thought carcass were from birkenhead (liverpool is across the mersey from it)?
@@armondtanz I think Bill is from Stockton on Tees but grew up on the Wirral, Jeff is from St Helens (near Billinge I think), Ken is definitely from Gayton (Wirral). None are from Birkenhead.
Guitar sound on the "Mentally murdered" EP is the same as "Symphonies of sickness". He literally finished with Napalm and went straight recording with Carcass, same studio, gear, producer.
Just met him the other day! Yes..he is truly amazing
Saw this as a child, Still in a grind band today at 43.
Send me a link
What band
@@A.i.Riverz it's in his channel
Germ Free......
Y not Classical?
LOL!!!
Whats the name of your band?
Bill Steer is so precious, standing there coyly with his guitar. What a class act!
A legend indeed
It's amazing seeing them as just a bunch of shy, nerdy kids who probably thought they would never actually make it in music. Lee Dorian was an idol of mine for a long time.
I knew him personally for years m8. We were skinheads. He was a decent lad.
@@paulgriffiths1062 knew him a bit too, used to chat to him in the record shop that I worked in on corporation street, mostly around the time that cathedral were kicking off, Lovely chap, albeit one who rarely had his own cigarettes,
That’s a nice and a bit romantic description of band. But Napalm were very, very driven, They very much “knew” they were going to “make it” but in their terms. And Mick Harris was always the opposite of shy. Yes, Lee Dorian was clearly nervous but look at Bill - he seems his own man in the interview.
There were some real open minded folks at BBC then.
I love when underground bands end up on mainstream shows like this. The Canadian version of Sesame Street had the hardcore punk band Random Killing on to play a song, haha!
It was just a the pure propaganda machine back then
A few more paedos working there then, too....
@@priestfan81 too subtle mate..
Oh and what's my favorite Napalm song? "Nazi Punks FUCK OFF"
The children orchestra at the beginning should have accompanied Napalm Death for a symphonic version of You Suffer.
Hey hey , absolutely :)
Years later, but epic comment.
Best youtube idea ever!
You’re an Icon, man !!! 🤣🤣🤣
members of the band looks like girls, they need haircuts
While the USA was still suffering at the hands of the PMRC et al, the UK had Napalm Death on childrens TV. Classic. :)
Mint Jeffer America had Soilent Green & early Cannibal Corpse, and although not death metal but we also had the mighty Eyehategod who have a song called Sisterfucker...lol
Yuuii
Classic? Lol. That's just noise. Its like the modern art of music.
Yup...then again the UK was the land that spawned Sabbath, Priest, Maiden and later Venom, all of whom pioneered metal in their own right and were certainly not without generating controversy. It is therefore no surprise that the land of The Beatles, Tea and The Houses of Parliament went on to spawn the likes of such armies of brute force with the likes of Napalm Death, Carcass, Cancer and Bolt Thrower. However a band as brutal as Napalm Death appearing on children's TV remains something truly extraordinary while the PMRC were getting offended by glam metal across the pond.
And now you can't say anything politically incorrect or the police will show up at your door instead of chasing crooks and rapers.
Bill's expression as Craig reads out the lyrics...priceless!
There is nothing better than good old def metal.
Grindcore, my good lad
TheBoi353 since it was first conceived my friend and who cares about left or right shit the music is great
@The Article "leftistgayaidscore"
Go back to reading your Bible old-timer.
@TheBoi353 Napalm Death and Terroriser are pretty political
@@kaydgamingmick Harris said def metal himself tho!
Kudos to the BBC for bringing on a band so extreme that Slayer couldn't hold a birthday candle to them
Slayer are a way better band and at least you can hear tom araya singer the words. All you heard from napalm death was dooh dooh booh gooh booh booh gooh gooh gooh.
Bill Steer looks exactly the same today.
and he wears the same jeans... :)
He never ages
He looks a little bit less psycho today;)
@@gezim70 yo bro you're Albanian too? Çkemi!
this is literally the coolest thing I've ever seen...the dude from 'Red Dwarf' interviewing one of the most extreme bands on the planet, on a kids TV show....fucking epic!!!!
I love this. You got classical, Napalm Death, and Craig Charles (Lister) in a 4+ min mash!
Carcass were on Red Dwarf too 😂
Mick being a dork is always fantastic to watch
absolutely brilliant! Craig Charles of course was a huge fan of Carcass - he got Bill and Jeff on "Red Dwarf" as his backing band in an episode!!!
"This is real music, step aside Kylie Minogue" - Wise words from Craig Charles !!
Kylie's still doing pretty well. On the other hand, who still listens to Napalm Death?
@@herculesbrofister265 quite a lot of people actually.
@@raulperez2308Indeed; I bought 1988 UK LP of 'From Enslavement...' the other day ! only £20 !

RIP John Peel. You played and had the knowledge about many genres.
“That’s the point of the lyric sheet” 😂 fantastic television. Awesome effort from host and band
A truely beautiful song, so sweet and tender
Bill is so shy and cute here
É um sonho ver uma banda dessas tocando desse jeito numa programa de TV aberta ao vivo. Kkkkk
The bad sound quality makes it even better, this is as brutal as it gets.
They couldn't deduce the drummer said "death metal" when he said it. Death Metal was that unknown in 1989 in the mainstream.
When Napalm death appeared on the BBC in 1989 the channel got a load of complaints from people not so much about how much they hated the music but they thought the BBC was taking the piss out of the public and the band and music wasn't real.
Well, at the time death metal didn't really completely exist yet. It was just barely born.
Skip van der Zwaan ....No it existed since the mid 80s...
Death Metal was around long before this.....i had the Death demos on tape trading mid 80's
So you mean a whopping 5-6 years prior? Hardly a long time
5-6 years is quite a long time in music ;)
I bought Scum on cassette when it first came out. Still have it. Fucking great album.
this is an absolute treasure.
Napalm Death and Lister in a room together? Smeg yeah!
Members of Napalm Death appeared in an episode Red Dwarf called Time Slides the same year as this. They were the back up band to young Lister, called Smeg and Th e Heads.
NoMoreHideTheBall Ye, that was Carcass.
Damn Deal Done The song was "Om"
Legand
smeggin hell!
The Only band beloved by the London Symphony Orchestra and able to put 60 songs on an LP!!!! Top NOTCH!!! 👍👍👍👍
2020 still grinding all over the world in full speed !!! great job !!!
In 1989 , i was only 22 , and i still remember this show today :)
Because we had cable tv , we were able to watch BBC :)
*****
No , Belgium (Born & raised & still living) :))
We also could watch British TV very often via terrestrial DX :))
London & Anglia
I remember watching this on TV, and it was a cool and strange moment. I also remember meeting Bill and Lee briefly in Cardiff before a gig they were playing. I asked some people who looked like metalheads if they were going to the gig and it ended up being the band themselves haha. All I had was a copy of Scum on cassette that somebody at school had recorded for me, and I hadn't yet seen how they looked yet. Really nice bunch of down to earth people, and the gig was good (apart from the lighting rig randomly falling down during the set).
I love the sound of Napalm Death in the morning.
Tapp Morningwood see what you did there
It sounds a little bit like sadness.😞🤘
😂 Apocalypse: Wow!
Remember; no one, I mean absolutely no one sounded like The Naps, back in the day. Took a girl to a first date at the ULU to see them. That was the end of that.
Lol!
THE ulu gig with Carass, ENT, Bolt Thrower & Intense Degree that appeared in the Arena documentary?? She should still be kissing your feet in gratitude. That gig is absolutely legendary
I took a bird to see half man half biscuit she did the same.
1:33 Bill checking out Craig's tie
He seems a bit intrigued doesnt he?
If you listen closely you can hear Napalm Death’s song “Evolved As One” playing in the background.
I remember watching this at the time ..loving every minute of it ..
I love how Bill can't stop laughing. Also that "Evolved as One" plays while Lee talks.
First of all, Lee Dorian is the fucking boss! Then, that´s what I call an astonisihing tv show. This Napalm Death era is the fucking best
Don't hold back guys, express yourselves...
moment of silence for the epileptics that watched this
Lost but not forgotten
I really hope no one with epilepsy has watched this.

Got to hang out with Napalm while they recorded "Harmony Corruption " at Morrisound Studio in Tampa, Florida. They added Barney on vocals along with Jesse(Terrorizer) and Mitch (Righteous Pigs).
Napalm death have never changed and thats why i love them so much energy on stage still 🤘🤘
They did change quite a lot. Change is not a bad thing, you know.
@@guLizaah exactly. gotta switch it up on occasion
Zero original members.

in 2019 a Black Sabbath song was featured in a Nissan advert.
How many more years before a Napalm Death song is used to sell Weetabix?
😁👍
They are using old metal classics because the teens that listened to that música now are old and have money, and that type of adverts attracts them👌
Reflex Paper used Blood Duster in their commercials about 20 years ago... at least one of those ads is here on YT
The warm glow of weettabix and marshall amplifiers!
Love Craig Charles' little poem here. 'You suffer, but why' is actually a quite neat summation of his voiceover on Takeshi's Castle
So honest and so brutal I've always loved your lyrics music and deliverance of it , thankyou so much
Master of brutal. Respect from Albania
That's a full song on Napalm Deaths first album. Also has the world record for the shortest song recorded
I remember watching this on tv. Love Napalm, Carcass etc 😁
Thanks so much for sharing, you bloody legend!! :-)
My favorite line up
Saw these guys in an upstairs room in a pub in Mansfield. I've never been the same...
Dude, they suck and are overrated trash.
A timeless classic and just in time for the holidays.
I seen them live with this line-up and it was amazing.
I knew lee before his days in napalm death etc. We were skinheads. He was a really smart skinhead..well dressed. A mad clash fan. Full respect to ya m8.
"Why should your prad be sow restricted, restricted to a mir fraction a this irf, this irf ..."
It's weird hearing this Northern style cover of a Grindcore song
Thanks For Putting This Up, Much Appreciated

And the Peel sessions are excellent. Same line up 👍😀
Mogshade yes and yes. I have the peel sessions on vinyl from back in the day. :) oh and the ep they did after from enslavement prior to the line up change
They only did the first two albums with the original line up right?
cliff pogue yes and the mentally murdered ep
Napalm were waaaay ahead of their time
Bill Steer SUPER young there!
and nevertheless interviewed by Red Dwarf's Dave Lister in flesh and bone! outstanding...
Heat Mini Show! Back in "1988" because Shane Embyry is on Bass. Loved that grunting deep growl style Lee.D. Napalm the Best!
Это братцы Napalm Death,ранний! Это нечто!!!
3:28 The lyrics, so deep.
Saw ND and At the Gates play in the Berkley square in the San Francisco bay area back in the late 90s . We were fortunate enough to grab some tickets because it was sold out. There were more people listening in outside than inside. Bloody awesome outing for both bands.
Mick is so darn cute here haha "More def metal songs!"
Bill Steer!!!
Today, he looks the exact same age. True story.
Uma das melhores bandas do MUNDO!
Fucking amazing! Wish I could go back in time and discover them all over again......
from enslavement to obliteration is one of the best releases of ALL time
Still Beer !
That is my favorite album. I forgot they were English. Lee Dorian is the best singer imo and this bsnd line up.
That brought a tear to my eye
I love this interview
Now theres this band called Slayer. Tom Araya sings like an angel.
Me recuerda a Necrosis (Chile) en Sábados Gigantes 🤘
Fue un momento surrealista...
That was so sic ;D I love early live shows bands 80's or 90's :)
Thank you for sharing this :)
I love that Craig Charles doesn't take the mickey out of them and praises their lyrics. I can't remember if he was actually a fan or not but i do know Bill Steer and Jeff Walker appeared in a Red Dwarf episode, 'Timeslides' i believe.
Ommmmmmmm
no shit! brilliant.
LOL!! that won, of the most greatest things in the world \,,/ :)
Wish i saw this when i was 8 in its original broadcast just to get a good head start on this kind of stuff.
Bill is cute as hell!
Ahh Because they are on the first 2 albums which I never bought. Started with harmony corruption. Off to the record store, getting in my car now.
they shocked everybody at the studio,.. probably.. and they thought it's just a bunch of noise ringing in their guitar and stuff and all of the sudden they synchronized to end the song LOL.. ..
Ive been waiting to long to see this.
this has made my day!!
Seeing them with Carcass next month, I've never been more chuffed!!
Hermosa melodia y ritmo bailable
My first dance wedding song
This is my new favourite thing👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👉🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺👈
That is just SO good
Es tan hermoso ver esto
best intro ever
I remember when Craig got the boys from Carcass in a Cameo on Red Dwarf as his band mates
I love that thing playing the drums.
Mick Harris .Baterista brutal e mais rápido da época juntos de D.D Crazy do Sarcófago e Pete Sandoval.
Bill looks like he doesn't want to be there.
He and Lee always looked like they doesn't wanted to be in Napalm Death xD
Osiris _ Which is why they weren't there very long.
I think, by this time, Bill just wanted to be focused on Carcass.
Of course Bill and Craig Charles teamed up once again for Red Dwarf when Bill played drums with young Lister on vocals.
Napalm death/ carcass were the band playing the om song in Red Dwarf Backwards - they obviously had some kind of connection with Craig Charles
