But for everyone commenting on the 'Afro Latino' thing: I often read comments from non-black Latinos saying how there is no divide based on colour back in the DR or wherever. YOU guys don't need to divide yourself from anything. The Afro/Black Latinos feel the divide and have felt the divide since forever. Some will deny it, I find in an effort to make their country look amazing, but it exists. It's not about where you were born or grew up, or the fact that 'Afro Latino' is a relatively new term....in North America. The names in Spanish speaking cultures are Negrita, Morena, Trigeña, and so on and so forth. It's only new over here cuz some people don't even believe there are Afros in Latin America and also because Blacks in these countries are often the minority and do not have the opportunities to immigrate. Which is why you will see more Afro Dominicans for instance...there are so many. You know how many times I've heard: there are no black people in Mexico, Cuba, Ecuador...Especially in the US...Most people only use the word 'Hispanic' which erases Afro Latinos....cuz technically, we are not hispanic....may be mixed with it...but we are negro.... I only comment and say this because denial is like a disease to which there is no vaccination. Discrimination, colourism, racism, it all exists. Here AND back home. Monica, you and your Mama are fierce, beautiful Afro Latinas! Xoxo

I asked bc I have Dominican and other latina friends who identify as afro-latina and talk about the racism they face from the non-black members of their culture. And I have a Haitian bestfriend who always tells me the history of the island and the riff Trujillo created between Haitian and Dominicans, and how dark skinned Dominicans would always be tested and if their spanish wasn't perfect they'd be deported to Haiti, etc.
I do understand what you're saying because In my island we don't call ourselves afro-caribbean because 95% of us are Black anyway. But my island is not the same as yours. So. Like I said in my original comment, I like to hear about the experiences of Black women in all countries. And there's nothing wrong with that. I'm not dividing anyone by asking women who share my race what their experience is in their culture.
So no, I'm not judging other experiences & cultures BASED on my own. I'm asking others to SHARE THEIR experiences in THEIR OWN cultures. Because we got a preview of that in this video, in the conversation between Monica and her mother.
I see you pasting this comment on the comments that talk about afro-latinas. Honestly it comes off as you trying to silence that conversation. Shame on you.
