I was so surprised by this movie. It wasn't perfect but it's so clear they had fun making it and it has heart. Genuinely more entertaining than most films in the last decade.
Found it on a lark and loved it. It is exactly what it tries to be. The humor is dark and dead-pan, occasionally silly but never overtly meta. Seen it twice so far and will probably see it several more times. It’s like a nice cuppa , always pleasing, never pretentious.
Seen this a few times on my “recommended for you list” but always passed it up…..now that the Drinker gives it his stamp, guess I know what the next movie night is going to be….🤘🏻
I saw that the drinker had done an extra shot on this movie and watched it before watching this video, if its good enough for the drinker to do a video on then its probably worth a watch and I found it to be very enjoyable
My favorite part of the movie is when he finally opens his gift while standing in his kitchen. On the counter behind him, next to the waving cat, is a tall, yellow tumbler with a smiley face on it, and the words, "Have a nice day!" I had one of those when I was a kid! I remember the "lip" was sharp, and there were vertical, raised bumps and lines, as though to make it look like yellow plastic bamboo. What a blast from the past!!!
I just watched this last week, it was pretty awesome. It was like someone actually felt their job was to entertain me in exchange for my money. I'd agree that it was a breath of fresh air, but I've been watching a lot of non Hollywood stuff from the rest of the world, and they seem to feel that way about entertainment, too.
I love this movie for what it brings, but also and perhaps, especially for what it doesn’t bring! Boss Level is presented in a way that is completely indifferent to “the message” and just comes across as a genuine action film with a unique and sincere message. The chemistry between Frank Grillo and his son is captivating and it stays with you because it’s real, whereas your brain registers the cgi violence as fake, heading to the “video game” sort of feel that the rest of the movie has. That contrast is what makes Boss Level such a great movie. “Roy’s” life has essentially become a video game. Video games usually distract you from reality, and take up time that you could have spent with the ones you love. A circumstance which countless people end up regretting and wishing they could go back and change. In this case, the “video game” helps Roy get his shite together, recoup some of that lost time, save his family and become the man he desperately wants to be… and all in the span of a single day.
actualy for a time look movie its pretty on the top end, above average i would say, because 2 things, first they explain it just enough for we understand but not get lost in bullshit scientific crap that wouldnt make any sens AND most importantly it doesnt matter much about time, paradox and all those shit because the movie isnt actualy about that, as it present more as a well actual loop, so its like none of this really happen and just get rewinds if i remember right. For what i remember i didnt see anything much trouble some with many movie on the same concept
@@Shiirya What I also liked is that the movie has a great explanation/excuse for having an action hero who is just ridiculously competent and accurate while also dodging all enemy attacks (until he dies, that is).

"I have done this". Personally, I thought this movie was awesome. It takes the same approach to games as I do. Die, die again, then die some more, until I accomplished that perfect run.
So glad you’re spotlighting this! One of my favorite movies in recent years and I hated how it kinda flew under the radar. It also breathed new life into the tired “time loop” plot line, which I didn’t think was possible at this point.
This film was great. Plenty of action, good use of the time-loop, moments of humour and Grillo and his un-killable hair was a great lead. A proper action, tongue in cheek flick.
Bruce Willis really does do only brief, phoned in performances now. I noticed this when I was reading the trivia sections on a website for movies he recently starred in. At least 3 said "Bruce Willis completed his acting in just one day".
I literally just watched Boss Level 4 days ago and I loved it, one of the first movies I have liked in a long time. I am also convinced now that you need good narration in a movie to get you into the action. There is just not enough time for a movie to introduce you to the creators, develop a plot and resolve that plot without narration on what the protagonist thinks.
@@flowinsounds Unless it’s poignant, interesting narration then it runs the risk of being try-hardy, clichéd, and lame, which then ends up deflating the whole film. I tried watching Narcos and the narration had me rolling my eyes within minutes. The actor sounded like he was purring his lines, trying way too hard to sound cool and mysterious 🙄. Narration can also get used as a lazy way to market a film to an international audience because you can switch the voiceover easily. Remember “The Mummy”? (The Tom Cruise one). Nah, me neither, but apparently they tried that
@@CursedWheelieBin Ow ya it definitely has to be good narration, a little funny, engaging. I don't know what the trick is to get it like that but once you have it. A Lot of the movies I think are classic use narration throughout; Fight Club, Shawshank Redemption, hell even Lord of the Rings started it off with Elf narration.
I agree, if it's appropriate for the film, narration is a good way to get information across to the audience quickly, and it's far better than Hollywood's alternative methods of either putting long, boring streams of explanatory text on the screen, or subtitles. Just watched Shang Chi, and the long, subtitled Chinese introduction is tedious, despite the action scenes, which you can't concentrate on because you're too distracted by the dratted subtitles! For me, Boss Level did it all quite well. Might even have to watch it again.
I watched this movie a couple months back with me ma, brother, and sister-in-law. Very fun and entertaining. Even my mom, who doesn't particularly care for violent movies really enjoyed it.
If you liked this, definetely check out ''Copshop'', which is also directed by Joe Carnahan & features Frank Grillo. It's a fun little comedy/crime-thriller, which takes inspiration from John Carpenter's ''Assault of Precinct 13'' and also has Gerard Butler playing a contract killer.
I've watched this movie a few times and it's better every time. So much freaking fun. Once again you prove yourself a man of the most refined taste, Drinker.

@@TheABElia The main thread, the serial killer plot, is weak. The nazis aren't a fun addition, though the actors try really hard to make it work. 'Hood' isn't sheriff. New sheriff, despite having been hardened by 'Hood', permits blatant corruption in the force. Girl power is through the roof (but not nearly as entertaining). A certain character was made pretty cool in the past only to become useless. One of the biggest WTFs: A room full of nazis is getting obliterated in a fight BUT WE DON'T EVEN GET TO SEE IT. @@TheABElia It's been some time but I recall finding it ok. It was a definite drop in quality but it was still enjoyable. They don't retroactively destroy the show. It wasn't like a Dexter or Game of Thrones ending... It was a bit like the 'final' season of another Cinemax show I enjoyed around the same time: *_Strike Back._* (S1 to S5 anyway... with Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester) It also had an ending that's not as good but doesn't ruin the show. At least not until the travesty that was this show's "revival" years later with an entirely new (and terrible) cast + production. They didn't even have the decency to call it a spinoff; they called it Seasons 6-7-8. They pulled a Doctor Who. But ya the *_real_* ending of Strike Back was kind of like Banshee. Not their best seasons but far from terrible.
@@dragonandavatarfan8865 because the most compelling scene in this movie would be the one in which he uses all of the knowledge and skill he gained to complete one last run - but this run is for real, and if he dies, it's permanent game over. Man I would've loved to see that.

Thanks for the recommendation my friend
Thank you, Drinker! Boss Level rules, and Frank Grillo is the fucking man! Deserves to be a bigger star than he is, and should've been cast as The Punisher. This movie kicks so much ass and proves how fun a movie can be when it doesn't try to be more than what it is, and doesn't hype itself as the "must see movie event of the year" that seems to come out every week. It's just saying "Hey, we're here to have a good time. Why don't you come along for the ride?" And I fucking love it.
I liked Boss Level for the same reasons I like Nobody. It's an action movie that doesn't pretend to be anything deeper and is there to entertain for an hour and a half. Neither one gets lost in exposition or preachiness, they just give you enough details so you know what's going on and basically why then gets on with the action. There's a strong need for movies like this and both Nobody and Boss Level fill that need perfectly for me. I can watch them over and over because they're just pure fun.

@@Bonez0r Watch his pevious collaboration with Joe Carnahan, The Grey - a fantastic movie.
@@yup486 seconded, that’s a great movie 👍
its weird how non pretentious action films such as Boss Level and Nobody feel like a rare gem these days, makes you appreciate them more.
RED, Nobody, John Wick, Boss Level, Extraction... Seems like there's a revolution in action films these days. And a rise of the "grumpy, slightly past his prime expert killer who reluctantly gets dragged back into it".
The basic premise reminds me of the Stargate SG1 episode “Window of Opportunity”
DURING MY BACKSWING?!
Three Sheets to the Wind, All hands on deck, WHACKO!!!!!!!!
Don't forget when he resigns and kisses Carter in front of everyone
Indeed.
A classic. The premise was also done in Star Trek: TNG with "Cause and Effect" which actually PREDATED groundhog day.
I was so surprised by this movie. It wasn't perfect but it's so clear they had fun making it and it has heart. Genuinely more entertaining than most films in the last decade.
In a world that's remaking movies of the past, this is art imitating life. And just what is needed.
Found it on a lark and loved it.
It is exactly what it tries to be. The humor is dark and dead-pan, occasionally silly but never overtly meta.
Seen it twice so far and will probably see it several more times. It’s like a nice cuppa , always pleasing, never pretentious.
_" I am the Critical Drinker. And Critical Drinker has done this"_
That would have been the perfect closing line for this video. What a missed opportunity.
Seen this a few times on my “recommended for you list” but always passed it up…..now that the Drinker gives it his stamp, guess I know what the next movie night is going to be….🤘🏻
you won't regret it
I saw that the drinker had done an extra shot on this movie and watched it before watching this video, if its good enough for the drinker to do a video on then its probably worth a watch and I found it to be very enjoyable
I watched this movie for the first time while holding my newborn son.
That Side quest hit hard man.
You're going to love Sabaton's "The Christmas Truce". Stay through the credits(it's a great 8 minutes& change total)
Haha, same here! Except also with my newborn daughter at the same time. :p
This movie greatly exceeded my expectations and thanks to The Drinker, reminded me that I need to watch this again... and again... and again...
This character actor has been around for a long time. Nice to see him get some recognition from “The Drinker”.
In this case, the “video game” helps Roy get his shite together, recoup some of that lost time, save his family and become the man he desperately wants to be… and all in the span of a single day.
i agree whole-heartedly, not the best "time-loop-movie", but a nice mix of action, humor and emotional beats
actualy for a time look movie its pretty on the top end, above average i would say, because 2 things, first they explain it just enough for we understand but not get lost in bullshit scientific crap that wouldnt make any sens AND most importantly it doesnt matter much about time, paradox and all those shit because the movie isnt actualy about that, as it present more as a well actual loop, so its like none of this really happen and just get rewinds if i remember right.
For what i remember i didnt see anything much trouble some with many movie on the same concept
@@Shiirya What I also liked is that the movie has a great explanation/excuse for having an action hero who is just ridiculously competent and accurate while also dodging all enemy attacks (until he dies, that is).
@@Bonez0r yeah the movie did a creat job by exploiting a simple idea ti set everything right
Whats this a movie with some fun elements! Don't know how this was approved by a studio in 2020 but its certainly
a welcome surprise will have to check this movie out - Cheers Drinker.
"Why do I keep going back in time?!?"
"To seek freedom from English tyranny!"
"Uh...what?"
"Sorry, old habits die hard."
I will not bow to an English King!
Mel Gibson is such a cool villain. Love him in this and the Expendables.
I want to see more of him playing himself as the evil big boss.
If you haven't seen it, he's great in "how i spent my summer vacation"
Edit. Alternate title "get the gringo"
He is directing lethal weapon 5 with 85 year old danny glover returning
@@Johno1992???? Oh did he? I never knew that. Thanks
Mr. Gibson also plays that big bad in Machete Kills Again, for some campy, silly, action fun (it was pretty bad lol).
@@furiouskaiser9914 oh yeah? Never seen that before. Will give it a look. Thanks 😁
Bruce Willis really does do only brief, phoned in performances now. I noticed this when I was reading the trivia sections on a website for movies he recently starred in. At least 3 said "Bruce Willis completed his acting in just one day".
And, sadly, now we know why. :\
That is an incredibly idiotic, subjective conclusion!
yeah, i don't get the hate for narration. it works, sometimes.
Might even have to watch it again.
boss level was golden. on the strength of it i went and watched a bunch more Grillo films.
Boss Level is definitely the best of them :D
Henchmen sarcastically saying "Great Plan" had me rolling, I actually had to pause the movie :D
Definitely one of the best smaller budget films out there. More impressed that they managed to shoot all this shit in just 27 days.
I enjoyed this movie when it first came out. It's like groundhog Day with Bill Murray but updated.
I watched this movie a couple months back with me ma, brother, and sister-in-law. Very fun and entertaining. Even my mom, who doesn't particularly care for violent movies really enjoyed it.
I remember I watched Passenger 57 with my mother and she was cheering “Go get ‘em Wes!” by the end 😄.
I didn’t think it would be up her alley
If you liked this, definetely check out ''Copshop'', which is also directed by Joe Carnahan & features Frank Grillo. It's a fun little comedy/crime-thriller, which takes inspiration from John Carpenter's ''Assault of Precinct 13'' and also has Gerard Butler playing a contract killer.
That sounds great. Going to look it up. Thanks!
I've watched this movie a few times and it's better every time. So much freaking fun.
Once again you prove yourself a man of the most refined taste, Drinker.
Just saw it. A solid action film and Frank does a terrific job .
This movie is literally the only reason I still have Hulu. It never gets old, I love it
I really liked this movie! It wasn't amazingly written or highbrow. It's just an old fashioned action film. A perfect counter for the soyboi bull crap Hollywood insists on producing.
Frank Grillo was excellent!
Yeah he is pretty nice, and i think he could have made a more than decent punisher for the MCU, but as he was casted in a pretty know hydra agent its fucked i guess.
Also jon bernthal actualy did a nice job in the serie, could have been better but i could argue that it was more the writting behind that didnt made the most out of it, he was i think convincing in the role
This is exactly what cinema was needing.
A movie describe in one word.
FUN.
After reviewing *_Nobody,_* I knew you'd enjoy this one Drinker. We need more of these unpretentious films.
Now go watch the first 3 episodes of *_Banshee._* I suspect it'll be to your liking as well.
@Raph Speaking of Banshee, how’s the last season? I loved that show, but I don’t need another terrible last season of great show.
I'm sure I've forgotten problems. It's by FAR the worst season, but I don't regret seeing it through.
@@TheABElia It's been some time but I recall finding it ok. It was a definite drop in quality but it was still enjoyable. They don't retroactively destroy the show. It wasn't like a Dexter or Game of Thrones ending...
It was a bit like the 'final' season of another Cinemax show I enjoyed around the same time: *_Strike Back._*
(S1 to S5 anyway... with Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester) It also had an ending that's not as good but doesn't ruin the show.
This movie was so damn good. This film and Palm Springs were two of my favorite films in the past couple of years.
I enjoyed all but the last MINUTE of this movie, but man, they absolutely bailed on the ending.
Why??
@@dragonandavatarfan8865 because the most compelling scene in this movie would be the one in which he uses all of the knowledge and skill he gained to complete one last run - but this run is for real, and if he dies, it's permanent game over. Man I would've loved to see that.
@@gsofficial oh I see. While I might be absolutely wrong, I think the final scene was heavily implying that Roy would have to do one last run but this time in hardcore perma-death mode but before we could see what actually happens, the credits start rolling (one of the best bittersweet tease endings I have ever seen). This is my theory.
@@dragonandavatarfan8865 yes, that is exactly what happens - they cut the movie off right before the climax of the story.
Okay Drinker, ya crazy reviewer, I gotta say: this was spot on. A great, no-brainer action movie that had just enough of a story and ideas that kept my interest but was just a fun flick. Great recommend as always, not that I doubted the Drinker!
Mel Gibson is The Boss!
Lethal weapon 5 !
Really loved his work but I just hope he truly reformed after that incident.

Thank you Drinker!
Drinker is the reason I watched The Outpost. What a great movie.
I’m really sick of pretentious movies. Like a lot of woke Hollywood, a lot of the later MCU and the overrated piece of sh’t that is Skyfall.
I strongly believe that the last great franchise we have is Mission Impossible. Great Escapism. Great writing. Great Action. Great Heroism. Hopefully they don’t screw it up 🤞
Theres a good bit of great entertainment out there, its just not being made by Hollywood nowadays. Russia, Japan, Korea, even China are making shit worth watching.
What's wrong with skyfall?
Skyfall?? You mean No time to die?
@@soyuzdavillan721 NTTD isn't that woke either. I saw older bond movies way more woke than this one. People are mad for no reason.
@@Gmthekiller I’ll leave my rant below. However, it’s a long read.
A completely entertaining and FUN action movie. Grillo is a solid actor!
God, I fucking love this crazy little thing. Grillo is low key one of the girders of action cinema in the last decade.
loved this movie. totally surprised me.... thought I would only watch like 10 minutes of it before bed, but it was captivating.
For me, THE sci-fi action movie of the year. Frank was absolutely awesome in this film. This was the almost extinct escapism i thougt i will never see again. It makes me hope again for the film industry. And by the way, the most positive "go away noe" since loooong times...
The kudos to Frank Grillo are very deserved. The real man is a guy's guy playing a real man. Oh how we've missed this!!!
Boss level took me completely by surprise. I had little expectation and found myself really enjoying it. And yeah, all I could think in the end was... Cracking little film. I hope it gets a follow up.
Thanks for the rec, Drinker. This was a bad-ass movie that I probably would have missed.
Yep felt the same, good fun movie. I like how well Grillo did too - he is a likeable actor. Did not know he was 56!
Just saw this film today and was shocked to learn that I watched an international version with a different ambiguous ending. Great, fun film.
In this alternate ending, did Roy wake up again and say “Piece of cake,” before cutting to black?
@@B0mber44 No. With the ending I saw you have no idea what happened after he was in the machine. For all I know the world still ended.
Saw this on Prime and didn't give it a second look. But then the Drinker recommends it this morning, so I had to watch it this evening. And once again, he's 100% correct! Really enjoyed it, might even have to give it a 2nd go! Cheers pal, without this, I would have missed out on this little gem!
"Stubborn determination, irritation, desperation, and resignation." Now that's great narration! :D
I loved this movie, good oldschool action, lots of fun. Frank Grillo has grown on me (that came out wrong, didnt it?) a lot with his movies the last few years, I like the dude and his work.
Stunts gallore here! Massive respect to so many stunt actors and fight choreographers giving their awesome abilities on set. Great action flick! Cheers! 🍻
I just watched this movie 100% based off of this recommendation Drinker, and I was not disappointed in the least. If I get halfway through these videos and it seems like a movie I might enjoy, I stop the video, watch the movie (100% legally, I promise) and then come back and finish the video. Thanks for the recommendation my friend
The drinker approves this strategy- my motto for 2021 and years beyond
Amazing what can happen when imagination, creativity, and a sense of humor can do when unpretentiously used together.
A friend showed me this movie a month ago. I Looooved every second of It.
I've watched this movie 3 times now. So worth it. This movie is fantastic.
Thank you drinker sir 🤗. Great movie to watch with friends and beers 🍻.
Was waiting for your take on this. Watched it like a month back and just sat there pleased after the 90 mins fun this movie provided.
Groundhog Day with a shitload of firepower? I'm in!! Thank you once again for adding what looks like another really fun movie to my Netflix queue.
I really liked this movie it was so underrated and overlooked
It was funny, full of action and had a decent story and acting
Man, I totally missed that when it came out. I like it. You never (well, almost) fail to deliver.
The most fun I've had watching a movie in a while. Very re-watchable.
Seen it yesterday. This film is an ideal source for quotes and captions for both Drinker's channels. E.g. "I am Tatiana, and Tatiana had done it."
Thanks for bringing this film up, I was greatly entertained with this one.
Thanks for covering this one. I reluctantly gave it a go and was very pleasantly surprised.
Thanks for the recommendation. Just watched it. Very much enjoyed it. Wouldn't have expected something that good from a streaming company original.
A throw back to the 80's "B" action movies. GLORIOUS!!!
I love Frank. Dude is awesome. Him and Scott Adkins.
I just discovered this and was pleasantly surprised. Frank Grillo gave one of his best performances and this film was well directed and well edited. It's always nice to discover a gem on streaming.
I looooooove this movie now, thanks Drinker! Frank Grillo OWNS this movie.... just a Ton of fun🤪👍
I loved this movie. I definitely want to see more Frank Grillo films. He's providing the action hero we desperately need in today's world.
