I just watched it over the weekend while sailing the seven seas, if you catch my drift, and I was waiting for them to cut to a different character for just a split second and it never happened. Awesome movie.
What really set this movie apart was the skilful insertion of emotional depth into Hemsworth's character. The reason he's jaded and seemingly doesn't care too much about whether he lives or dies is because his young son died of leukemia. And this tough, resourceful badass didn't have the balls to be there at his kid's side while he died. The scene where Hemsworth opens up about this terrible act of cowardice, and how it's eating him up from the inside is about as powerful a scene as cinema can deliver, and Hemsworth welling up as he delivers it shows some serious acting chops. The other thing that really lifts this movie is the subplot about the rise of the street kid. You're never quite sure where it's going, but every scene - particularly the one on the rooftop with the gangster - is pretty electrifying. Quite simply, a brilliant movie.
What really frustrates me is if Hemsworth, Henry Cavill and Tom Hardy were born earlier they would have been superstars of action movies like Arnold and Sly, sadly this wont happen today as a strong white male in the lead role is almost criminal!
Well to be honest they ARE superstars of action movies, it's just that the action movies made today are rarely as visceral as they were back in the 80s/early 90s because the studio chase the lower ratings to maximise cinemas ticket sales. This is part of the reason I love Korean cinema as they don't try and sugar coat the violence or the consequence of that violence on the main characters in stories that call for it... at least nowhere near as much.
There is always the chance that some modern day equivalent of Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus will come along and form a modern version of Cannon Films and we'll see the likes of Cavil, Hardy and Hemsworth get solid action roles. Perhaps the backlash to woke culture will help such a studio prosper.
Hell, they even handled the "diversity" quota well. People on his team of all races, who are capable not because of the colour of their skin, but because they're capable.
From the trailer, and The Drinker's video, it looks exactly like the kind of movie that losers who complain about ToXic MaScULiNiTy would hate. That makes me like it already.
***SPOILER ALERT**** My favorite scene in the movie, is when Hemsworth knocks out the 5'5" 125 lbs villain with an open hand slap and told him to sit down. That was the most realistic scene and I laughed so hard. Here's my $20 for the sequel, if and when.
Thanks for that recommendation. I watched it right after watching your video. Great old fashion action hero movie from the olden days (8 to 10 years ago). No preachy woke nonsense or 98lb girls tossing 200lb stunt men around like rag dolls. Chris Hemsworth is a badass, if he were around in the 80s he'd have given Arnold and Sly a run because he's a much better actor. Thanks again!
It's an instant classic. All the traits of an iconic action flick updated with modern tech. Great watch from start to finish. You can tell the Drinker liked it by the tone of his parting words.
Understand that it is Hollywood underground legacy to feminize masculine men. Whatever cult holds court there, a masculine man will first be seen in women's undergarments before he's allowed to go and be awesome. Some sort of ritual.
Thanks for the recommendation Drinker, a solid action flick - action is beautifully shot, pacing is quick and characters are straightforward and honest - Hemsworth plays within his range, and isn't laboured with stupid dialogue ( or having to apologize for anything) - a minimalist performance that is exactly what you'd expect from a jaded veteran with repressed emotions. He's convincing as a total badass but never feels invincible, or just another terminator , so that a sense of constant tension is present. After killing a room full of guys he's exhausted and needs a moment to recover. The subplots are integral to the main story, and add rather than detract from it - I liked how it's Farhad, the boy whom he spared, who returns at the end of the film. The supporting cast of actors are smart and believable - no over the top antics from the primary antagonist or ridiculous monologues. This film is an example of how less can be more in terms of action film dialogue. Cheers !
It was so nice to see Hemsworth actually taking himself seriously in a role for once. Definitely a good watch for any fan of action movies. This movie deserves a segment on the Drinker Recommends.
It was refreshing seeing a man in the leading role, they're so rare these days. I mean some of them look like men, but they rarely truly act like it. Example: Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner feels so meh but that's just my opinion.
@@davegrenier1160 I know I know but after seeing planet hulk which admittedly didn't really have any banner and other hulk stuff. The whole Hulk character is a let down and banner is just the worse side of that equation for me. In age of ultron when he was being controlled it was pretty good though.
ah yes men, only can be man if big stronk, punchy, stabby, no talky. how dare they have emotional depth and feeling, and dont you fucking dare wear pink.
It seems someone hasn't picked up a comic book or watched the original TV show. Bruce Banner was always a *nerd* , if someone has (as Thor: Ragnarok put it) seven PhDs, it's highly unlikely they'll be asskicking machine.
I’ve skipped over chances to watch this movie so many times because I misguidedly thought it was more story than action... After Drinker’s pitch, I’ll give this one a go this weekend.
Same. I wasn't as much afraid this is "too much talk, too little action", but rather that the action will be mediocre at best, but those scenes shown in the video look really fucking good.
I love this movie because underneath all the relentless, razor-edged action is the foundation of a moving, relatable, and believable story. Every decision is backed up by well-established character development. Nothing felt like it happened just for the sake of the plot. Hargrave was a stunt man and coordinator for Marvel before he got into directing, and it's clear watching his colleagues talk about him in Corridor Crew's Stunmen React series that he understands that everything in a film must serve the story. I can't wait to see what he has for us next.
It's a perfect mix of the big buff 80s badass who can mow through squads of enemies with ease and modern gritty realistic action with reloads, camera work and the hero getting beaten and bloody.
The film is like a flaming sambuca exciting to look at, dangerous in anticipation of consumption and enjoyed when talked about but not as the fulcrum of the evening. Cheers.
I was pleasantly surprised from Extraction. It quickly became one of my favorite action movies. The magic for me, was its ability to combine incredible (mostly accurate) action with an enticing simplicity that conveyed deep emotions of the human spirit. Weaving complex emotions and good dialogue.
I like this new segment. Sometimes I wish you'd throw out more recommendations, and this is a way to channel it. I would have never watched this until now, but I definitely will!

This is the closest we've come to the action movies of old. Chris does a fantastic job and totally had me involved in the character. While I also like the Bourne type thinking mans action, this straight to the point, nonstop rollercoaster action will always have a place in my heart. I thought the stunt coordination in this movie was breathtaking. Bring on more of this please. Prepare for this channel to explode as people realise you have a second channel Will :D
A bit of a surprise gem for me this. The long shots were fantastic. No bloody shaky cam, 20 different jump cuts of the same punch nonsense. Chris Hemsworth looks physically intimidating and this makes his pummeling through the bad guys feel plausible.
I just wrote this comment to appreciate Drinker's effort to create a great collection of those dark and great movies! (this, JCVD, Gran Torino, e.t.c) I've watched this movie before and it was good.
There's one particular long-take, I think it's at the end of the first act, that is something like 12 minutes long. It's freaking incredible, right up there with the finale to Children of Men.
@@planetdisco4821 The long take in the car was just as impressive imo. I remember watching that for the first time at the cinema. My brain sort of registered it was one long scene at the time, and then I spent the rest of the movie distracted by the thought lol.
@@johnbull1568 agreed! apparently they set a camera up through the roof of the car I think because it rotates 360" during the scene, I spent the rest of the movie wondering how they did it too! Didn't the same guy then go on to direct Gravity? which was basically edited to be one long take and was also awesome. Funny how everyone seems to spruce 1917 as the first movie to do this. (should know the name of gallery but its Sunday morning and I'm hungover and procrastinating over a cup of tea and bloody Simon Whstler lol)
Sam Hargrave has started as a stunt man for Chris Evans in Captain America Winter Soldier. Then, he was climbing the ladder doing stunts in Civil War and later became a stunt coordinator in Avengers Infinity War and Endgame. This is his first film as a director and Russo brothers were also producing this film. I believe that he said in an interview that Russo brothers didn't have the time, so they recommended Sam Hargrave as a director for this film, I might be wrong though. PS: I know he was also doing stunts before Winter Soldier, but when he met Russo brothers his career really launched at full force.

The action is very crisp, brutal and really well choreographed. No choppy bullshit to make the actors look better than they are. Everyone is great in this!
Just finished watching it and I have to say it was a delight. The character development and story angles are a lot more in depth than you give it credit for. You speak as if it is a shitty Jack Ryan film and that it certainly is not. The setups in the beginning of the film has a brilliant payoff at the end that some people whom watched it twice failed to spot. Entirely changing the ending according to ones perspective/perception skills. This is one of my favourite fictitious yet serious realistic combat films.
This film was entertaining as hell. Hemsworth was badass in this, as was the indian guy that was persuing him, cool character. They both handled their action scenes superbly.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! From start to finish I was glued to my chair and didn't want to move (even though I could pause the movie). Three times I cried: 1) When the kid's best friend was shot in the head; 2) When that poor child was thrown off the roof; 3) When the kid fell into Tyler's arms and sobbed "I want to go home!" If that didn't make you want to reach out and give him a big old hug, then, check your pulse. *****/***** for covering all the bases: A no-nonsense/kick-ass hero, gunfights, car chases, non-stop action, and blowing shit up!

Being a Bangladeshi and hearing Hemsworth speaking Bengali was such a pleasure.
"Proman Dao" (Show me a proof)
Indian bengali here, and I felt the same❤
What really frustrates me is if Hemsworth, Henry Cavill and Tom Hardy were born earlier they would have been superstars of action movies
like Arnold and Sly, sadly this wont happen today as a strong white male in the lead role is almost criminal!
Don't worry about it. Although it's almost criminal now, pretty soon it WILL be! Just give them time.
With LGBT2000 taking Arnie's place what could have possibly brought you to that conclusion...
@@irontuzi3453 In that case, Ben Shapiro, here's your chance to pick up the ball that Hollywood has let go.
PS. Extraction was awesome. No b.s. woke culture commentary, no "funny" jokes. Pure action, pure adrenaline...
Ovi Mahajan : You don't look like a Tyler.
Tyler Rake : No? What I look like?.
Ovi Mahajan : A Brad.
That was funny. 🤣
@@och70 SEE IT.
***SPOILER ALERT****
My favorite scene in the movie, is when Hemsworth knocks out the 5'5" 125 lbs villain with an open hand slap and told him to sit down.
Amen Brother!
Just watched this a month or so ago. It is a delightful movie. The right amount of emotion, suspense, and flat out badassery.
It's an instant classic. All the traits of an iconic action flick updated with modern tech. Great watch from start to finish. You can tell the Drinker liked it by the tone of his parting words.
Chris redeemed himself by this movie... and for what exactly he needed to redeem from? ... Ghostbusters (in bra!)
Just the kind of movie to get the taste of that stinker out of his mouth (and ours). 👍
Understand that it is Hollywood underground legacy to feminize masculine men. Whatever cult holds court there, a masculine man will first be seen in women's undergarments before he's allowed to go and be awesome. Some sort of ritual.
Well at least no one saw that movie.
Cheers !
That one-shot scene was just pure, unadulterated, badassery.
Banner is supposed to be "meh." It's meant to provide contrast to the Hulk.
@@lukewright9031 I know he's a nerd, I just don't vibe with him as banner. He does look the part for hulk though.
Same. I’m having a watch!!
This feels like the character portrayal that should have been made for Hemsworth's character in the Red Dawn reboot. Can't wait to give this a watch!
Just like real shots, there's always room for another - great idea! Keep 'em coming!
It's a perfect mix of the big buff 80s badass who can mow through squads of enemies with ease and modern gritty realistic action with reloads, camera work and the hero getting beaten and bloody.
Just hearing how a generic action movie can be enjoyable instead of the pretentious state of movie reviews lately is so good.
Extraction was a breath of fresh air for all the reasons you laid out. Easily one of my top films of 2020.
I hope Hemsworth tries to bring back 90's action hero movies. Extraction was pure 90s awesomeness. This could be his niche. No more spandex!
Finally saw it last night....2 years after your review...FANTASTIC!
The film is like a flaming sambuca exciting to look at, dangerous in anticipation of consumption and enjoyed when talked about but not as the fulcrum of the evening. Cheers.
I thought this film was mega slept on and massively underrated. Glad to know other people have actually seen it and enjoyed it too.
Sounds as if the story has a lot in common with The Wild Geese... which I really like, by the way!
Thank you for reminding me of that movie. Omgosh totally forgot about it.
I would have never watched this until now, but I definitely will!
one of the best and most underrated films of last year, the drinker gets it spot on. bring on extraction 2
Thanks so much for the great recommendation. I had never heard of this.
It's just a great film with no bollocks. I love it.
You're my hero of the day. :-)
i was watching this movie with a cig glueed to my lip and a can of beer gradually getting warm in my hand. This is how fun it was to watch. I was forgeting to light the cig and drink my beer during actions scenes... and that is a high praise comming from me.
As always i love your taste drinker.
This was an awesome idea (both movie and brief review), keep these coming along with your regular content on both channels. Drink on!
I give the film the "Spirit of Charles Bronson" award.
That standoff scene with the knife is absolutely phenomenal.
I have been thinking for awhile that Netflix would be a perfect venue for the adaptation of the Drinker's Ryan Drake series.
Ryan Drake would of course be played by a 100 lb woman of colour
@@IncredibleMet shhhhh!!! Don't give them any ideas.
Didnt see this flick coming...just loved everything about it. Old school tough guy bludgeoning his way through anyone who gets in his way. Awesome.
Extraction was amazing! Definitely takes us back to movies like Commando and Rambo.
Actionwise, yes.
But I found the plot and character sorely lacking. Commando and Rambo weren't just action. They had a LOT of personality.
A bit of a surprise gem for me this. The long shots were fantastic. No bloody shaky cam, 20 different jump cuts of the same punch nonsense. Chris Hemsworth looks physically intimidating and this makes his pummeling through the bad guys feel plausible.
We need more "totally hard bastards" nowadays.
I watched this movie on my own, then consequently watched it two more times later that week with my family and friends. It's so damn fun and awesome.
Sounds interesting. I’ll check it out.
I truly appreciate your reasons for creating this channel. I too appreciate the meaning behind it, both meanings.
This was the closest thing we'll ever get to a Call of Duty movie for now.
The long takes in this movie are jaw dropping. You just want to hit rewind and watch again because you can't believe it was one long continuous shot
Honestly just want more movies like this, was just awesome!
I just wrote this comment to appreciate Drinker's effort to create a great collection of those dark and great movies! (this, JCVD, Gran Torino, e.t.c)
I've watched this movie before and it was good.
There's one particular long-take, I think it's at the end of the first act, that is something like 12 minutes long. It's freaking incredible, right up there with the finale to Children of Men.
Yep. Starts with the car chase and ends with the fight between Rake and the enforcer, I forgot his name. Was pretty awesome.
I see you're using another alias, Mr.Reese 😎
That one take finale of Children of Men is one of the most legendary scenes in one of the most underrated movies in cinematic history
Pretty sure there was a Russian movie years ago set in that art gallery in St Petersburg that was done as one take. (should know the name of gallery but its Sunday morning and I'm hungover and procrastinating over a cup of tea and bloody Simon Whstler lol)
I watched this THREE TIMES IN THE FIRST MONTH that it was released in... enjoyed it every time I watched it!
Yep. You can watch the interview he did with Scott Adkins on his youtube channel. Great stuff.
I like that you are pointing out movies to me that I've missed. Thanks Drinker!
If I hadn’t already torpedoed my Netflix account and refuse to return until garbage like “cuties” is taken off I would actually be tempted to watch that.
This exactly.
you don't need paedoflix to watch it hardy har har
You could just watch it "elsewhere" without paying lol.
yohoho and a bottle of rum, there be pirates on them thar winds who agree
It feels good to see a fresh production to come this badass
0:05 that's Hannah Palmer.
You're welcome.
I saw this not that long ago, and it was AWESOME.
And the ending was just perfection.
The action style seems to be strongly influenced by the John Wick films.
There were even a couple scenes that I said, out loud, "Oh, that's John Wick inspired..." And it wasn't in a bad way. But in a, "Holy shit, yes!" way.
The director was one of the stunt guys for JW
Yeah, it's quality. The thing where he breaks the dude's neck against the table reminded me of a similar scene in John Wick 1, when they come for him in his house.
He raised the bar for action movies
Not kidding. One of the best movies I've seen in years. I'm waiting for a couple more months hoping I'll forget most of it, so when I'll watch it again it will feel as good as seeing it for the first time.
The "stripper with an exotic name" joke works better for me, because Tatiana is an extremely common name in my country.
Yes but how many of them are short punchy strippers HA HA!
"It's just a joy to behold!" Agree, agree...
“Long takes!”
Does that mean no quick cuts?!!!!
Please say yes.
The action is very crisp, brutal and really well choreographed. No choppy bullshit to make the actors look better than they are. Everyone is great in this!
@@wheeliebin18 Agreed. Just as CD called it.
Awesome. Thanks.
Thanks for pointing me to this movie, Drinker. Was worth my time.
Surprisingly good and enjoyable movie. I absolutely loved the super long continuous scene. Freaking amazing!
I enjoyed this film on its own merits but also because I’m sure it made The Woke wet themselves with outrage at the heroic portrayal of masculinity.
The tried to get it cancelled and removed from netflix.
The woke are asheep.😊
This film was entertaining as hell. Hemsworth was badass in this, as was the indian guy that was persuing him, cool character. They both handled their action scenes superbly.
I enjoyed Extraction, Drinker! Have you ever seen the anime movie Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade? Thoughts?
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! From start to finish I was glued to my chair and didn't want to move (even though I could pause the movie). Three times I cried: 1) When the kid's best friend was shot in the head; 2) When that poor child was thrown off the roof; 3) When the kid fell into Tyler's arms and sobbed "I want to go home!" If that didn't make you want to reach out and give him a big old hug, then, check your pulse.
*****/***** for covering all the bases: A no-nonsense/kick-ass hero, gunfights, car chases, non-stop action, and blowing shit up!
bewbs!!!!!!!!!
Speaking of that. Who is the blonde in the picture he shows the bewbs shot?
2021... the year of Men. And I'm here for it.
I can't wait to see more about tough, resilient, brave men.
It also has a badass woman in it - with no regrets.
You mean it’s an action film, with an actual man in it? I thought it had to be a pseudo feminist/lesbian beating up hoards of men three times bigger than her/she/he/that/it/you/me/them erm, I’m running out of pronouns, here come the woke brigade, MEN are not WOMEN!
man I didn't realise the action in this movie was so good, it looks fantastic, how have I not given a watch ?
It's cool when you actually talk about movies, but you should fire the 8-year-old who writes your "raunchy" jokes. They're even lamer than your knockoff Plinkett jokes.
Glad to see this movie get some love on a channel known for critiques, it’s precisely the kind of film that feels put together purely for action junkies like me and I adore it for that. Chris Hemsworth’s best role by a country mile if you ask me, finally got to *really* use those guns of his, lol
Nothing really game changing, but an incredibly solid action movie that doesn't fuck around and is all about the action. We need more modern movies like this
Dude keep up the good work. I think I've watched all your content and I've enjoyed every single one. This is the first time I've felt the need to comment. Keep it up!
