Getting Fiat-Allis 545B

  • I must give a shout out to Mr. Towman for hooking me up with this sweetdeal on a Fiat-Allis 545B Wheel Loader. It was abandoned and the new property owner was looking to 'liquidate' it. I put in new batteries and changed the fuel filter. It turned right over with the new batteries. But, my Pop squirted some ether in there and locked it up. After several bumps to free it up and a recharge of the batteries, it fired right up. I did pump up the one tire that was flat, but it didn't hold air. We've had a lot of rain recently, so the tire shop couldn't replace the tire where it was. So, I hauled it into their shop for a new tire (or maybe three...)

Your a smart man for not revving the life out of it after sitting for a while, that's the golden rule, always let it really warm up & get the motor set to run properly & the testing of the hydraulics in a methodical fashion, u got a great deal on this unit, it purrs & didn't require much to kick it over..love saving old iron, they work the best.

Any heavy equipment service business that's even slightly competent would quite easily be able to repair that flat tire where it sat behind the house.
If they looked at that repair job and decided they couldn't do it because the ground was soft from recent rain as was said in the description, then they don't belong in the equipment service business. That type of service, in less than ideal conditions, is the bread and butter of the industry.
I'm betting that there were other reason for not doing the repair on site.

@Lewie McNeely. The army had the Allis-Chalmers 645M's,the military versions.I operated these machines in Vietnam 1970-71.They were very good machines.I really liked them.Although they wasn't equipped with cabs nor any ROPS.They were a big improvement over the Hough H90CM loaders which had rear wheel steering. And they were more maneuverable. They were faster too.

For one, I'm not trying to wrestle with that heavy tire unless I have too. And two, on a dry day, your spinning tires and trying to navigate around bushes and over trees just to get to the machines. After even a little rain, getting back there is out of the question. As it is, I got my truck stuck trying to get back there a couple of days after some rain. It's 4 wheel drive and I wasn't too far off the driveway and buried to the axles. I'm not even too upset at the tire shop for not want to change it on site. At least he came out to look at it. Their service truck would've have been buried to the chassis and nobody's trying to drag tools all the way around the house. There's a reason I don't back the dump truck and trailer off the street. Sure, there's several ways that tire could have been changed. Heck, it might have just been a faulty stem. (And, yes, I've already kicked myself for not checking that). Bottomline, I decided it was safer and more efficient to drive it out of the woods and take it to the shop for a new tire.

AustriaGamed uuummmmmm you obviously know nothing and is under that American idea of it beat crap cause it’s European. They were and still are unbelievable machines. Last forever I know of a 110.90 model with nearly 30,000hrs. They came out with a limited edition model for us in the Celtic tiger and it no amount of money will buy one today. Collectors items.

Now that is what I call a bargain, but you shredded the tyre to fuck.. should have removed the wheel insitu and taken it off to the repair man first. Oh hang on, those machines were stolen 18 years ago and lay hidden for all that time. Naughty naughty.

Too bad the tire shop cost you $1500 for a new tire because they wouldn't drive up in the yard.

Only guy I know that would go on a joy ride with a flat tire that could have been saved with a service call to the field. And, then take a full, long video of the minutae of it!

While I appreciate all the comments on not fixing the flat tire, I got my reasons for doing what I did. Thanks for all the could ofs, would ofs, and should ofs. Bottomline- I had to move the machine from its location. A new tire, was a small price to pay. As a matter of fact, I'm going replace the other three tires too!

They came out, but said they couldn't fix it where it was at and that the tire itself was no more good. So after that, yeah, i drove it up on the trailer and took it to the shop!
