Are you from South GA or Florida
Florida. Lower Alabama
@@HamiltonvilleFarm heck yea I had a good feeling... I'm up here in north east Georgia at the SC line
@@HamiltonvilleFarm try tapping the solenoid instead of the starter motor
@@HamiltonvilleFarm Hey i live in LA too, aka Panama City.
I was born/raised in Galion, OH and my dad worked at Galion Iron Works, where these graders were made. I still have memories of going to his office on the weekends, taking home some treasured GALION stickers (the ones applied to these once-mighty machines). I also remember the saying "all roads lead to Galion" because you would see these graders and rollers building roads across America and even in foreign countries (like Saudi Arabia). I'd call/write to my dad whenever I saw one while I was in the Army. They were also used to plow snow. Imagine hearing these iron beasts rolling down your street at o-dark-thirty after a snow storm! I'm not sure if my dad (who's 80 now) has seen this and other videos like it, but I'd like to thank those of you who painstakingly restore these wonderful machines, which are part of our American history.
That's a cool story 👍 thanks for sharing.
Nice memories, the first grader I ever ran was a Galion. I've also run Galion rollers. I worked for the Virginia DOT and pushed snow with a grade too. With a V- plow on the front I could move a lot of snow.i never thought about where they were built or the people who built them.
that’s awesome!!! i love hearing peoples stories like that
@@HamiltonvilleFarm where u guys at. I'm in Marietta ohio
One thing to point out with the starter. That solenoid has a magnetic coil in it that engages the gear to the flywheel. If you just jump the high current relay, without giving the coil power, it won't engage. You need to short out the small lead, not the two large ones.
It was so frustrating to watch them beat on the starter. I found myself yelling at the screen!
My hometown had a fleet of graders that they used for snow removal. As a kid I loved to watch them do their stuff. I hope you get it back to work. Good luck!
Yeah, some hoses and belts I think we can! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment 👍
Since I was small, road graders have been my favorite piece of heavy equipment. They are just super cool to me!
👍
I love seeing old equipment like this coming back to life!! 👍👍
Thanks CJ👍
Love to see this old equipment come back to life
Yeah for sure. It was a cool feeling to hear it fire up. Preciate ya bud. 👍
Same
Me too
I love these videos, you always here about people finding these old machines in the woods, good to see you got this one started.
Right on. Thanks Joey. I appreciate you
@@HamiltonvilleFarm do you get this machines for free or you buy them?
Sam, we traded another piece of equipment for this one 👍
@@HamiltonvilleFarm I wish to visit your garage, am so much impressed bro.

I'm So glad you guys are trying to save machinery. It really makes sense to save something if you can. Instead of just taking it to the scrapyard!😃
Yeah CJ for sure. Stay tuned to Sunday night for an update.
I salvaged one exactly like this in Cap Haitien Haiti for a customer a few years ago. The one I worked on was about 15 years older and had a Detroit 471 engine. It had sat so long I had to replace every inch of electrical wiring and most of the rubber hydraulic hoses. Took about 3 days total to do that job.
Wow that's cool👍
I know that was a great feeling to get it running. Awesome job. Can’t beat a old international engine.
Yeah it was a pretty cool feeling. Very rewarding. Thanks for the comment 👍
Cool
Man I loved hearing that thing crank up it’s music to my ears
You and me both. I was really happy👍
Way to go Hank!! I was cheering for you! I’m amazed y’all started that and I have to pull my chainsaw 45 times and I used it yesterday!
Whoo hoo👍👍
"we are not mechanics, we just understand principles",, so you beat the hell out if it with a hammer! LOL that was great! :)
Man, exciting to see it actually start! I have two dead tractors with major issues and you get a machine running right there in the field!
It was really good to hear it fire up. Thanks for the comment 👍
That started better than one on a job site over the weekend... the magic of TV
Lol
Has always had a good to have something to cover up the Breather when you can't get them to stop running or just case they run away
Yeah we actually took a 2x6 to cover it and in our excitement we forgot to get it out of the bed of the truck😁👍
❤❤
That's right, with a diesel always make sure you can stop it before you start it.
Nice. You guys got it started and that engine sounds solid. No knocks, pings, or smoke. Enjoyed the full video, guys. 👍
Thanks Don. It did sound good. That's the first time in years that thing turned over. Pretty impressive
@@HamiltonvilleFarm It sure was impressive, Hank. It's even better when it started after you guys gave it a few love taps. I've had to do that with starters. The brushes seize. Gives you a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Have a fine week.
I'm a 22 year old girl and I accidentally stumbled upon this video but I was so happy that it started 😂
Welcome 😊 we're glad you liked it. Have a great day and be safe👍
“New life NOW” !!! Love it !!
So had the dozer clearing an area for the tools just to use a crescent wrench, screwdriver and hammer! 😳😂
lol. That is funny now that I think about it.
Don’t forget the batteries lol
Lol
Yall come up with the neatest stuff. IH made Galion for YEARS! The outside levers are for the blade sides, right outside lever to work the right side and the outside left for the left. I ran one like that YEARS ago but it had a Cummins in it but the automatic was different. Seems like it had a manual hi/lo and an automatic hi/lo and fwd and rev. 3 levers instead of 2. It'll do you proud when the rust gets fixed and'll make a smooth road! I had to subscribe to see how all this is going. THANKS from an old worn out driver and operator!
That's cool. Thanks for the info. I appreciate that👍
@@HamiltonvilleFarm About all your graders are set up the same way with the blade controls but A/C had both the blade lift levers right together on the right hand. Maybe the old Deers too. It's been a long time.
@@HamiltonvilleFarm I ran an OLD Gallion that had an IH- UD engine (started on gas and the switched to diesel) that was swapped out for a 4-71 Detroit/GM. It had 6 forward gears and 2 reverses on one stick. You had to go all the way out of high range and up into lo and then back across BUT the stick would fall out of the socket and lock the brake pedal so you couldn't get the brakes on. It was blamed sure interesting! And many gray hairs later..............
Galion Iron Works made Galion graders. Probably used a lot of IH engines.
@@ohgary All the old diesels were UD power plants but the later ones could be Cummins or Detroit/GM's. Probably some gas jobs but I never saw one.
On a diesel, especially, don't try to start the engine, before you know, for sure, the best way to kill it, and and are prepared to use it. Coolant is a good idea, also, even if you have to drain it, before you leave the sight. I grinned, big time, when it started right up, and purred like a kitten. Great video.
Yeah, we actually had a wood block to cover the air intake and in all our excitement forgot about it. 😳 Thanks for watching 👍 have a good day!
Hello angel brother God is helping you to find equipment that you can use for your farm God is so good all the time
Hello Hank this is from David Hodges this is my only believe I believe when you find old equipment that said blessing from heaven to bless your farm God bless you the wonderful family in Jesus name
it was so painful to watch them hammer on the starter when there not jumping the starter solenoid but the starter motor. you MUST jump the small wire over to the power not the large post. I'm hopping it gets sorted in the end.
Thanks for watching
Awesome job. It's always very satisfying to hear these beasts fire up ! 👍🏻
Thanks for watching 👍 part two is out Sunday!
@@HamiltonvilleFarm Cool :)
Brought the whole tool trailer out just to use the crescent wrench 😂
But if we didnt we would have need the whole shebang 😂 have a good one brother 👍
And a 2lb persuader don for get

@@HamiltonvilleFarm truest truth.
Hank, the best way to gain experience is by hands on. You guys will get one heck of an education working on these old girls. Western Truck and Tractor Repair has some great videos on equipment repair and I have watched a few to get my memory back.
I've learned so much already it's crazy. I appreciate you bud👍
Love the vids there always so peaceful and kind and an inspiration u made me want to be a macanhic

“We are not mechanics here”- Nooo say it ain’t so Vern!
Tried to warn you😁 thanks for watching
KNOW WHAT I MEEN, VERN?
We have an old grader that judging bu the technology is older than that thing. It has even taken care of and looks nicer though. There is a leak in the brake line so we have no brakes and you can’t kill the engine from thei cab throttle like your supposed to but it still runs and we use it a lot. When we first got it, we couldn’t find the switch for the throttle on the engine so to shut it off you dug the blade down, throttled down, put it in 4h, and popped the clutch. It has a Detroit engine in it and I believe it is from some sort of Adams company or something like that. It is all PTO’s running from the lever to the thing it runs. Fun machine that we love.
Cool story. Thanks for sharing 👍
That starter is a pre-engaged type, crossing the solenoid will only ever spin the motor, you need to find the third (small) terminal and cross the power to that and it'll engage properly then... Edit- haha you got her in the end then.
Right on. Preciate the tip 👍 have a good one!
Good to see an old motor grader be brought back to life 👍
Yes sir. Thank you for the comment 👍
Hammering on a starter that spins is a good way to break it. Never hit the center of the end plate, it covers the bearing.
Oh well, some people are just lucky. Hope it holds out and you can get it to do some work for you.
Yeah we got lucky it didn't break. We learned some lessons on this one.
Thanks for filming
Thank you.
Dang it started like u ran it yesterday I'm surprised I'm glad it hit
Yeah it really surprised me too. It ran smooth as it could be. 👍
@@HamiltonvilleFarm yep this with a little TLC will make a great machine
Equipment like that and to have it rust away, is a shame you can use the motor for a generator
Since all your followers like this old equipment maybe somebody can help me locate a pair of bolt-on extensions for an old ARPS blade. Really enjoy watching you guys give these old machines new life
Hope you can find one👍
I really thought I heard you say you were going to pull the, "Tool Truck" up to the grader. Where are the tools?
It was the little white trailer behind the red Dodge. Nothing fancy. Lol. But it works.
Tool truck equal tacklin fuel aka beer wagon

Hamiltonville Farm Adjustable wrench and a hammer
Carl Kipke I seen two black kids rebuild an entire Chevy engine with a crescent wrench, a hammer and a pair of pliers. It would have run too except the wooden pistons kept burning up!
Always fun to warch these videos. I aint no mechanic either, but im always rooting for that puff of smoke. Lol
You and me both! Thanks for watching!
The last T-400 I operated had a 250hp Cummins, the one before had a 4-71 Detroit. The Cummins had so much power for the size the company put a scraper push block on the front, it worked too. If the starter Spins why beat on it? The solenoids stuck (tap) on it while turning the starter. The two end controls are the left/right blade lift. Second from the right is wheel lean to load the machine wheels need to be verticals. DO NOT run with no water & water pump that head Gasket WILL blow IH was famous for it. ChiefD
Thanks for the comment brother! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment 👍
I love this stuff. Me and my dad won an old Austin western at an auction for 25 Bucks and just got it running this week and as soon as we can get some usable tires on it we are driving it home
That's cool👍👍
The lady said it has been there for 20 years
The parts in that engine are screaming "OIL! We finally have some oil!"
Yeah I hear ya 👍
The Hammer has another name . The Persuader .🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks 😊👍
One of those guys laugh and voice sounds just like Popcorn Sutton...
I'll Google him. 😊👍
I've hung out with some of Popcorn's old friends. Guys a true southern legend.
It sounds really good to...she's a darn good runner...
Right on. Thanks for watching 👍
I need a motor like that to make a whole house generator.
Yeah man that would be awesome 👍
I love old vehicles keep rocking
Thank you!
Will never understand why people beat on the starter motor, when the solenoids usually the problem lol
Mechanics around the world have been doing it for years havent they. Lol😁👍
Because on that starter the solenoid was in the case not external
The solenoid was working, the bendix was stuck.
The solenoid pushes the bendix out to engage against the fly wheel. Most starters work that way. Unless it has no solenoid. They can be beat on to work.
Robin Babington no Sir the starter solinoid is clearly external of the starter motor. ChiefD
My dad had a similar Galion with a 4 cyl Detroit. That thing was LOUD!
Love this vid Hank! And so hilarious reading all the couch potatoe armchair mechanics crying about whether or not to beat on the starter or not AFTER you said y'all weren't mechanics...LOL.. SMH.... I'd done the same thing...and then directly sent voltage like you did. I just can't get enough of these resurrections!! I absolutely will be doing a restoration like this! Matter of fact I have footage of an old guy that restores old dozers on his place in Oregon... I need to put that vid out!
Yes you do👍 thanks man and yeah you get all kinds, but they all mean well. 😊
Stopped in from Watching Wes Work...looks like a great project!
Thanks. Welcome 👍 hope you enjoy the channel
IH engine in that so your in my wheelhouse there lol I have tons of info and books on those and just guessing its a DT360 or a 407 engine so if you have any questions I might be able to help otherwise I suggest you jump on to the Red Power Magazine forum and and ask those guys will know plenty too
Cool thanks AJ. I appreciate that👍
There is no bendix on that starter motor, the solenoid engages the starter sprocket as well as supplying the power to the motor so needs to be energised. “We are not mechanics.” You’re right there.
Thanks for watching
Typical IH engine, they always start up 💪
It was pretty cool to hear it run for the first time in years. Sounded great 👍 thanks for the comment Shane!
Yep, German motor IH used I suspect.
Unbelievable it started that easy!!! I would never get that lucky..
We were stoked👍 thanks y'all!

Water in the hydraulic fluid when its white in color
Yeah..Def not good.
Great engine in that either a d407 or d361 some of IHS best most reliable engines made and the turbo versions were amazing
And more than likely I will guarantee you'll will have fuel pump issues with the engine dying and either you'll have to send the rosa master pump out to be rebuilt or get the updated part yourself it's a one piece and make your own timing mark and put all new seals in
