I purchased a T7 with 18-55 and 75-300 kit lenses for just under $600 about a year ago and Tech Through The Lens was one of the 1st places I found that really helped me figure out how to make it work (thank you for that). I mainly shoot wildlife and I am by no means a professional, but I don't completely agree that it's not that great for sports or wildlife. It's true that 3fps isn't all that fast but that only limits the number of photos not the quality. The shutter speed and auto focus are more than capable of getting pretty decent pictures. I have also recently upgraded my lens options with a Sigma 150-600 zoom lens and it works great with the T7.

4:10 To any aspiring wildlife photographers out there, I still wouldn't let this dissuade you if you're looking for your first DSLR. I've been shooting on one of these for about 3 years now, primarily for wildlife and landscape, and it's served me very well. The slow frame rate does get frustrating at times - aerial shots of birds, for example, can be a bit difficult to get - but it'll push you to get better at assessing and anticipating the behavior of your subject, which will always be very valuable even on a faster model. If you're like me and seeking a promotion from point-and-shoot or smartphone photography without breaking the bank, whether that's due to your budget or doubts over the mileage you'll get out of it, I can't really think of a reason not to start with this model.
The one thing I'd say to avoid a lot of grief, though, is to pay attention to that ISO! As mentioned here, this camera produces some very noticeable grain at 1600 or above depending on the lighting conditions. I was already using manual shutter and aperture to fine-tune my results, and also because onboard light meters on many cameras aren't yet able to discern between dark colors and actual darkness with 100% accuracy, often yielding not-quite-right exposure recommendations as a result. (This is something you see on many cameras, not just this guy.) Noticing when you're getting a bad reading comes with experience and can be worked around when you figure out the situation-appropriate tweaks to shutter and aperture. I still relied, though, on auto ISO mainly for the ease of use. What I didn't put together right away is that the same sensor deficiencies were also occasionally producing bad ISO results. I would be shooting a dark-colored subject and/or background with very strong ambient light and the result would come out disappointingly grainy. I eventually thought to review the metadata on these shots and realized that these elements were causing the sensor to blow out the ISO to 1600 or 3200 when the scene in fact required a much lower value.
I still use auto ISO under certain circumstances because it can be quite helpful in reducing the amount of time spent fiddling with settings, but your subject matter and lighting conditions will dictate whether this time-saving is worth the possible side effects. It's also nudged me further into using a standalone light meter to assist with directing my camera settings and help eliminate these issues. (Full disclosure, I've been using a cheap app that uses your phone camera to get light readings until I can shell out for an actual, high-quality handheld light meter, but it's been getting the job done well enough for my purposes, lol.)

Another great option for begginers is used cameras, ypu can get a 6d for about 200 bucks which is cheaper and full frame, plus the ergonomics and build quality of older flagship caneras that are cheaper can make them considerably more enjoyable to use. Though im saying this from having a 40d as my first camera and being used to a bunch of dials to quickly use manual settings so to each their own

I am new to photography and have been putting off buying my first camera because I felt I need to research heavy before deciding; however, I decided "fuck it" and hopped down to my local pawnshop. I almost bought the Canon eos m5 that was there but it just seemed like a "fluffier" digital version of this camera. I love the light feel of it and Did notice the lack of bells and whistles making it very straight forward and easy to learn while handling. I recommend going to a pawn shop or anywhere that sells used cameras and find the best offer for the most intact camera. I got my camera and kit plus a third party wide lens for half the price of a brand new kit. I feel very confident in my choice because of this video and I'm excited to learn more.

    • @michaelgatheringdust

The camera is not as critical as the lens. This is a crop sensor camera with a 1.6x crop, so it is smaller than a full frame (which is what the old 25mm film cameras were). BUT for landscape a nice wide angle is extremely useful and I would recommend the very reasonably prices Canon ef-s 10-18mm lens. I use a canon mirrorless full frame for landscape with a 16mm f2.8. With the crop factor of the aps-c sensor that 10-18mm is the equivalent focal length of a 16mm-29mm lens. Wonderful for landscape and other wide angle applications.

Awesome video!!! I’ve got a few questions that I’m hoping someone in these comments can help with! So I’m interested in starting my own photography business. I need a camera to shoot really detailed close up shots along with landscape and action shots(of people not animals). I’d like to be able to shoot video as well but I’d only use the camera for short video segments. There are just so so many options and I don’t know how to decide. I’ve had people recommend the T7, RP, and the 90D. Price wise I’d like to stay around $1,000 or less. Any suggestions?
