  • When students at London’s Charlton Manor Primary School learn about history, they use chocolate. In math class, they weigh and measure fruit smoothies. For a lesson in shapes and sizes, they utilize bananas and grapes. Taking inspiration from world-renowned chef and TED prize winner Jamie Oliver, head teacher Timothy Baker began incorporating food into all subjects at the primary school. By making food an integral part of the curriculum, Baker hopes to teach children the importance of valuing food and cultivating healthy eating habits. The school has even built its own vegetable patch, chicken coop and beehive to harvest honey. Because of the efforts of those like Baker and Oliver, education is feeding not only the minds, but also the stomachs of the next generation.

When our daughter was in primary school, my husband volunteered to go into school to help with reading and maths. He suggested that he teach the kids to cook basic things like soup and bread from scratch. The school wasn't overly keen, but he did it anyway. 10 years later, while sitting in a cafe, a young woman came up to him and said "You taught me to cook. Thank you! I still do it!" He was so chuffed. Get food right, it improves everything.

SunnyDays Ahead well from what I noticed, the older generations, who are currently the one in charge of our school systems...and most of the world actually, chose what is easy FOR THEM and not really Whats truly good for their children/the future generations. So now that the children then are and are now grown up are making a good change. Jamie Oliver is a good example of that.

A lot of countries have that as well. But Japan also have easily accessible healthy food sold as fast food (sushi, ramen, riceball etc are considered fast food), and strict government policies that western society will scream fascist over (companies will be fined heavily if their employees are overweight, imagine what would happen if they do that in the USA, everyone will scream fatphobia). So the fat acceptance movement is killing a lot of western people.

I blame him for the fact my child will not eat the free school dinners he is entitled to, i have sat in the school during lunchtime and seen the few with packed lunches sharing what they have with their mates, I have seen the cold soggy sad looking plain baked potatoes, and the pink sludge they claim to be tuna, i have seen the colliflower rice and dry nasty curry, I have watched as plate after plate gets chucked into the bins while the lunchroom assistants back is turned.
And I have wondered why they are wasting so much food, why they'd be so bloody minded that they let kids go hungry, why they want to put kids off eating healthy food by serving that and then i realised, its not about the kids its about sounding good to the parents.
