She did great!!! I love Rav4's -- they are used as farm vehicles here in Colorado. They do great in the snow, great on rocky roads, being so light. Mud can be a little tricky, but at least they are easy to rock. I haven't been 4x4in' in my Rav4 in many years, but I did take her up the Mt Bross trail (but we had to turn around when we met a mini glacier). My Rav is '00 auto, AWD with limited slip. Go Rav4!
I wanted a smalloff-roader to work in my farm, after some research In 2017 I purchased a 1999 Rav4, just 4,500 Euros with 100,000 miles. It goes perfect. Whether not a pure of road Its capabilities are more than enough for a farm, and its reliability second to none. And when snow or difficult conditions it is a great asset. Go Rav4.
My father purchased one for 275,000php (4,960 Euros) here in the Philippines in 2014, still in good used. It was previously owned by a lady so it was only used for short distance travel. It still looks good.
I could say many things you should do, put it doesn't matter, you made your best with what you got and what you know. Rav4 are much capable than that trail, belive me. I have a Rav4 99 4doors automatic, lift and with rooftent and put some surfing boards or climbing gear. It is great.
That's really impressive honestly, I've been really excited to see how it did off road. A 3rd gen v6 would make for an interesting video too. Those rav4's are surprisingly quick given they're a 13-7 year old family oriented SUV
I've had a 98 Rav4 for the best part of a decade. I love it and as it's about to hit 300,000km, I've been considering changing it over for a new car even though it starts every time. Now you have me thinking if I should just rebuild it and enjoy it for another 10 years. BTW, if you hit that log more straight on the first time, you would have made it. Enjoy!
Mine is the last year of the first generation, 2000. I take mine to the lake and do some minor off roading, and it always proves to be a great little car. I love your build, and am hoping I can get mine looking something like yours one day. Mine only has 176k! Great job on the build!
We had 4 feet of snow and my rav4 that had not been started in two years.i had no choice i had to get out of the house.so i put my car battery in and turned the key,up she fired and off i went.i could not get over the capability of this little off roader 90s toyotas will we ever see the likes again.i dont think so
Cool video well done👍. After several different Toyota’s 4x4’s builds over the years they are for the most part tough vehicles! Your video made me smile when you put it to the test! I’m building a 98 Sienna with Rav 4 x4 power train now for Beach hopping down here in BCS...Adios
Last year my family tuned up our "Ghetto ass Rav4" by going to a trusty mechanic. New timing belt, pcv valve, water pump, oil pump, fuel pump, alternator, battery, all new tires. & I contributed to new spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter, power steering fluid, valve cover gasket. The oil I put is Castrol High milage the OG green bottle & the oil filter is either Purolator 1 or Bosch Premium. Both I buy at Amazon for around 3-7 $ when they go on sale. I truly love the ghetto rav4 because it always starts, never seen a check engine light & it has enough power to go. Its so old both my older sister & i passed our DL test on it. That car is the car everyone uses when they don't wanna waste gas on their own car, 😂🤣 so they use the Ravvie.
I told you if you needed some advice regarding engine power. I have a very heavy modified RAV4.1. But, I guess we would never know the REAL potential of this classical vehicle. I am mensajero.
Hey drew! I really hope you see this comment! I own a 97 rav 4 and I don’t have roof racks! I’m really keen to get them but I don’t know where to look! I live in Tasmania, Australia! Please let me know where I should look and roughly how much they might cost
Good video. Subbed! I love my RAV4. She is an '08 4WD V6. I sometimes wonder if I could modify her to off-road. I also dunno enough stuff or make enough money to make her capable of it. Maybe she is already capable? Oh well, I can dream regardless. Thank you for making quality content!
@2:17 i would have got out for a moment and put the wood aside instead of fooling around for years if you do offroading not as a Sport only to get from point A to B, because there is no other way it would be exactly like that, the only goal ist to get to point B
An off road trick for 1st gen RAV4's is to replace the stock 16" wheels with 15x6" Jeep wheels and use 215/75/15 AT tires. For bad mud scenarios, (heavy duty) snow chains on the rear (only) tires and locking the center differential could save the day.
Hey Drew, I'm looking at a 99 Rav4 with a limited slip differential. I ran the vin through a Toyota decoder, and the limited slip and AWD are mentioned, but there's no mention of a center locking differential. If it's an AWD model, it should have the center locker also, right?
Correct, all all-wheel drive models have a locking center differential. It’s an auto locker for cars with an automatic and there is a push button for the manuals.
Brother. What would this paint design be called I am thinking of purchasing one of these to either make it a Jurassic park themed or retro Jdm like yours?
It wouldhve made it over the log on first try, I have got two of them rav4s with bfgoodrich KO2 tires on them. Never had a problem. It looks like in the video you re using 3 seasons to keep up with the jeep lol

Thier used as farm vehicles in new Zealand too!!!

I have a 99 rav4 too. Is yours 4wd? Mines only 2wd :/
Mine is 4wd.
@@SERGUMUM damn nice 👍

Post a pic
Just watched all of the project 4x4 vids, and i truly enjoyed it. I think it's a super cool little beater. Hope you decide to keep her.

Jeep is training 4runner's baby brother. how cute :3

... that was awesome ! ... keep the videos coming 👍
That model RAV4 should have all-time 4WD. But the rear wheels weren't spinning !
So awesome
I feel like you could do with more experience off road the RAV could do much better if you give it some practise, love the rav 😊
I told you if you needed some advice regarding engine power. I have a very heavy modified RAV4.1. But, I guess we would never know the REAL potential of this classical vehicle. I am mensajero.
Mensa is a OG 4.1 guy. He goes waaaaaaaay back. (What's up, Mesna -- this is demoder from the old forum!)
You can put rear lock on your raf & lsd on the front ... would make a big difference

I immediately thought of kent rolling
loved your videos, thanks for sharing!
man ,that is Cool.looks good.
Awesome job I just bought a 99 with 176000kms not miles for $2000 canadian
I have one in white also and absolutely love it
Very Cool!
Excellent build... outstanding video review! 👍

Great.. keep going for new content...
I have a 99 RAV4 4WD. About to do a 2 inch lift.
What i saw... it wont make it where i go.
The amazon..
I was about to buy one
The compition is the terrain
I have a 2004....280,000 miles. So these are basically immortal?

the rav not making it over that tiny log was driver input error . it would have easily made it over had you used a different aproach angle .
mi auto Toyota rav4.1996 2.0 la mejor de todas la versiones de Toyota 4x4
Busy build my own 1998 Rav4
You should definitely sell me the Rav haha
@2:17 i would have got out for a moment and put the wood aside instead of fooling around for years if you do offroading not as a Sport only to get from point A to B, because there is no other way it would be exactly like that, the only goal ist to get to point B
My rav has an axe machete or chainsaw in it at all times. Hand for zombies to.
I was wondering how many pieces were upgraded? Thanks and appreciate
If you had a set of BF Goodrich ko2 all-terrain tires at that you would have made it over that log!
An off road trick for 1st gen RAV4's is to replace the stock 16" wheels with 15x6" Jeep wheels and use 215/75/15 AT tires. For bad mud scenarios, (heavy duty) snow chains on the rear (only) tires and locking the center differential could save the day.
Perpendicular with logs ;)
Tiers make a world of a difference... maybe throw some damn all terrain tires on there..
put the old man lift kit on that thing and some bigger wider tires =)
Hey Drew, I'm looking at a 99 Rav4 with a limited slip differential. I ran the vin through a Toyota decoder, and the limited slip and AWD are mentioned, but there's no mention of a center locking differential. If it's an AWD model, it should have the center locker also, right?
Correct, all all-wheel drive models have a locking center differential. It’s an auto locker for cars with an automatic and there is a push button for the manuals.
Doesn't look like the rear LSD was working. Did you get it fixed?
time for a good tires set
does this model not have the centre diff lock like the earlier models
Why not a strut tower stabilizer bar
When you got stuck on that log, did you try using your factory diff lock?
Brother. What would this paint design be called I am thinking of purchasing one of these to either make it a Jurassic park themed or retro Jdm like yours?
Do it yourself with Vinyl wrap.
Mad name changer...
Can you do raf 4 vs santa fe ?
Hii I’m going to buy this one is this auto or manual
is it a manual with the center locking diff?
ah, just watched your wrap-up, looks like an automatic with lsd. looks fun!
I wonder if they make a Detroit Auto locker for a 99 RAV4..
Now compare that to a Lada Niva from when the Soviet Union still existed 😉
don't u need the rear wheel to spin to get over that log?
lol it did get stuck but I call that driver error XD
Can't really off road in the automatics. The manuals have a locking diff. Automatics are... Automatic.
Was there ever a build list on this Rav4?
Obviously you need to take a trip... Rubicon.
dude you've proven that you don't need a jeep with 40 grand in mods to go off-roading
the biggest reason you couldn't do it is that you had no traction in the mud. Needed mud terrain tires.
Or chains.
It wouldhve made it over the log on first try, I have got two of them rav4s with bfgoodrich KO2 tires on them. Never had a problem. It looks like in the video you re using 3 seasons to keep up with the jeep lol
What size they were? Im planning to fit 235/75 on a r15
Moar off-road videos!!!!
Amazing video and job man but can ask you for some help on the rav4
Uh, sure
The Drew Johnson Experience how does your ac system look like cuz my rav4 doesn’t have it but it has all the controls and even the ac button
Was the rav4 on street tires?! Haha! What the
👍
Maybe if you have had actual mud tires you would have done better
Too bad it doesn't have a manual diff lock.
Is it tranverse engine awd
What tyres/rims has it got?
Tires!
Standard rav4 can hit way more mud than that. Alot of work for nothing lol
The front wheels were spinning and the back not. You need to press the centre diff lock button on the dash. Donkeys
It's auto-locking on automatic cars. There is no button.
2:25
Did you steal Cowboy Kent Rollins theme? Lol
He wouldn't mind.
Let me buy it off ya! ;)
Hi Drew, I wrote you in the mail, I hope you can read my message
You need off road tires and the rav4 will do better off roading
Excellent insight.
I know from experience that all the off-road capability doesn't really mean squat with street tires.
with a more offroad tires it wouldn't even blink at that tree trunk
With offroad tires it wouldn't have had any issues
He doesn't know how to drive over a log.
guy lacks driving ability
Dumb dude don’t got off road tires duh🙄
