Planting Your Own Tree Plot!

Tree plots are an awesome way to add more extremely attractive food to your property. This can help you draw the deer from your neighboring properties. There are a lot of choices when it comes to what trees to plant, and you need to carefully plan out where you plant these small orchards.

Mountain ash is really good in colder climates, I see deer on their back legs eating the berries daily and they grow to be big trees that keep them around for months

I start with Plantra 5 or 6 ft tubes .After the trees grow out of the top but before they branch out too much I remove the tube (protector) and replace with a bark protector which is about half the cost of the tube .Once the tree gets too big for the bark protector I remove it and put 6 ft of welded wire fence around the tree until it is so big bucks will not rub it . The plastic tree tubes are reusable as are the bark protectors and fencing .I have hundreds of fruit and chestnut trees and getting multiple trees protected by the same materials saves money as I try to plant more each year .

Another thing to consider which you should have disclosed maybe, was fruit trees all have different crop times. A good portion of species around 4th of July which is way too early from deer season(if you intend to hunt near the trees). If you’re just providing supplemental feeding then that’s fine I reckon. Secondly, when planting fruit trees at your location you need to determine if you need to amend the soil. I like to add some sand, then the fill dirt and top it off with a bit of top soil. You also only want to plant about an inch below the ROOT BALL! Not the “main root” as you stated. Over the first few months you should always check for the soil to settle and add top soil as needed so the root ball doesn’t become exposed hindering the growth of the tree.

Sorry forgot about the crop times I was referring too, several species have late crop dates if you intend to hunt near the plot such as an Arkansas Black which drop in late October. Just food for thought. Pun intended.

Trying to protect those trees from the deer is a pretty good challenge. Red deer over here will challenge any fence you put up. And electricity is not available as they will try eating them around the year. :-)

Best bet is probably an electric fence of some kind.

Put 3 t-posts and 6 foot 2/4 welded wire around them or chicken wire.
