- From the very moment I first laid eyes on Boltgun, I knew I had to play it! The game has a visceral, Doom-inspired, boomer-shooter gameplay loop, set in the Warhammer 40K universe. Boltgun immediately caught my eye, and as a fan of the Doom series, Boltgun pays homage to the genre, while also flexing its own muscle in the field - and the result is that it had me hooked from start to finish. I thought it’d be fun to quickly give you a few insights from my playthrough experience in regards to tips and tricks I learned along the way. So, here’s 11 Things I Wish I knew Before Playing: Boltgun!

Thanks for taking the time to make this. It’s pretty informative and I enjoyed watching
Thanks! Boltgun was super fun to cover.
I want to add that if you want you can always turn sprint on at all times somewhere in the settings. This has been a huge quality of life improvement for me since i no longer need to be holding a button to sprint and can just focus on dodging and gunning
Yeah it's under controls you can have it be a toggle and it doesn't turn off when you stop moving.
Dude, get to know your charge move better. Its a one hit kill on fodder so its great for enemies that dont give you any breathing room like the Blue Horrors or Nerglings. Especially during reloading. Its also good for reaching those hard to reach areas. I use it just to speed me up most of the time too. Also, your go to for Aspiring Champions and Dreadnaughts is your Melta Gun. Save your Grav-Cannon for bosses. One last thing. You can prevent Blue Horrors and the Champions from respawning if you deal a large killing blow or are fast enough to blow their corps apart. Don't stop shooting until all thats left is red paste.

HERESY!
We are playing an Angel of the holy Emperors Astartes not a Tau Fire Warrior.

MORE HERESY!
😂
Honestly I’ve been having a blast with the game, doom is one of my favorite series and I also love anything 40k, so having them combined in such a good way is amazing
This felt like the perfect entryway into 40K for Doom fans. I've played a few Warhammer titles, but this one felt the most accessible.
I forgot you can sprint
Good video! I wanted to add a tip or two about the chainsword, as while the game doesn’t really incentivize its use, it does have some nifty utilities! First, the chainsword can actually cover some great distances, both horizontally and vertically, so much so that it’s incredibly useful to view it almost like a grappling hook, especially effective when targeting smaller, fodder-type enemies. Use it to achieve a longer jump or reach ledges previously not possible, as high ground can often provide a tactical advantage and a moment to re-assess/strategize your next step. Secondly, something I found in the loading screen tips, is that all enemies have a harder time breaking out of the chainsword’s animation when low health, which essentially means they stay stun-locked easier and are much less likely to damage you as you’re attacking, which tends to be the main deterrent/ risk associated with the chainsword’s use. In this way it’s very useful to finish off close to last-hit larger enemies, and it feels fun as hell! Boltgun is a fantastic game and I’m heavily praying for DLC, hopefully where we get more melee-based weapons like the poweraxe and thunderhammer! Plus maybe even jetpack mechanics 👀❓
DLC would be amazing. Love these tips, too. Thanks!
To add it also ads a bit of I-frames (invincibility frames) which has saved me lots of times. I still haven't figured out if it's just I-frames from the enemy you have targeted or literally any damage during that moment of "teleporting" with the chainsword, either way it has helped me against toads and other things a lot in exterminatus especially since I'm bad at aiming and thus need to be close to an enemy to hit them.
@wufflemuffin9197 That's weird, I don't use it at all because it just locks you into getting pummeled up close while you do hardly any damage with the chainsword. Maybe it's because I'm just playing it on medium.. really seems like a missed opportunity tbh
1:55 sprint can be changed to a toggle, and its actually an autorun
So many complaints for a normal difficulty?! In the easiest boomer-shooter in history??? Bah...
And encouraging other players to play as little as possible by running for the exit with tail between legs?
Dislike. A huge Imperial dislike. 🙄🤣
I'm playing on hard and I'm disappointed when I end an encounter with less than 150 contempt.
All I want is a map so that I can effectively navigate the levels.
It’s been a minute since I’ve played this game and made this video, but now I’m curious: is there no map? I can’t remember.
@theyettiden nope, there is no visual map... however, there is a navigation guide there draws a visible path on the floor to the next objective. This was introduced with one of the later updates.
Awesome and informative video on an super fun game! Just beat Boltgun myself a few days ago and had a blast, but didn't realize how little the game actually explains to you. Haha! (Probably in keeping with the retro game vibe). I literally thought melee was entirely useless on anything other than the weakest enemies, when I finally realized in chapter 3 that you can rev the chainsword by mashing L2 to tear through stronger foes. Dramatically increased my enjoyment of interspersing melee into combat. While I totally agree with you about melee being a double edged sword (pun intended) I did find it a good way to finish off an enemy quickly whose health I had whittled down which also helped with ammo conservation. Also had to learn to use the plasma gun and the volkite caliver to take out the champion marines because those weapons always explode them once their health is gone so they won't go into their "chosen champion" mode. Great work on this, though! Hope this video blows up in popularity as its well made and has some really helpful tips. Blessings.
Those champion marines are a nightmare to deal with, that tip with the plasma gun is a great one. Chosen Champion mode is such a pain. lol
I definitely dig playing Boltgun on handhelds along with the Quake series on my GPD Win Mini. Love Gamepass for that reason. I also toggle my sprint instead of any hold down button.
What are the greatest steps is that if you're not very good at the you can use the lowest difficulty in the game becomes pretty easy but still challenging and if you really are not that good I'm glad they gave you cheat codes so you can just enjoy the game for what it is and get better at the game and then turn it. The only one I found that I needed because I'm not that good with unlimited. I ended up dying a lot but one of my favorite things was the shotgun so far I'm on chapter 2
Use Volkite for Nurglings
Def will check that out!
Bro just toggle sprint lol. You don't have to hold the stick down. Maybe like look at all the settings? Press it once and sprint will stay on forever. You can even toggle it mid air bruh. Left trigger to sprint is whack.
