Amazing. I like your point about honesty. I too am studying at IDI and am planning to officially open a business. Thank you so much for your story. BTW the part were you talked about your mom's friend bringing up your name when they were looking for an Interior designer reminded me of the story of Joseph, when the chief butler brought up Joseph's name when Pharoah wanted an interpreter. Man I see God in you and your story. Congratulations on your success. I'm inspired ❤❤❤ I hope my interior design journey becomes a success. story as
It’s so crazy how much this video confirmed. My husband began Pastoring at a church that was on the verge of closing. Very beautiful building, just needs some love and updating. It’s only been a year, and we’ve opened up two rooms and turned it into a welcome/fellowship space. So proud of how it turned out! I also have designed a couple sanctuary updates…and now the kitchen, family room and guest bathroom of our home. People have been drawn to my aesthetic for sometime now. But I’m starting to pursue it fully. The similarities in our stories have me goosebumps! I’ve been looking into Sketchup but I’d love to look into some design courses. This video answered a lot my questions!!!
That’s so amazing! I love how God confirms things to our hearts. If you want to connect further I’d be happy to chat. I can share my experience with The Interior Design Institute - if online learning is good for you I highly recommend the program. Feel free to reach out on Instagram if you’d like to chat further (my accounts are in the description box). ☺️
Awesome! I am so glad I came across. Im ready to start my own interior design business! Ready to get out of the corporate world and more into my passion. I am starting out by redecorating my bedroom and living room and some other small things around my place. I have two people already that trust me to design some of their spaces. Thanks for the insight I wish you continued success.
I literally am gonna cry. I have been looking into these corses but I didn’t feel like I could handle the work load so I looked up how to just start a business and saw your video and when I heard to mention the corse I had to go watch the other video you posted answering questions about it. So thank you now I’m gonna chase my dream! ❤

Marisa, you are a very inspiring person. The passion you show through your words, and mainly, showing that we cannot think that as mature people we will not have a chance, made me be sure that I am on the right path. Congrats and God keep blessing you!!!!
I am graduating next year in interior architecture & design and I have done two internships so far and I am so eager to keep learning and to start my own side hussle! I am eager to start my own brand and business because I have had soooo many people reach out to me a help them with their spaces. I’ve helped a close friend design her entire hair/beauty salon and how I am helping out with another salon and apartment project. I am so lucky to have these opportunities but I really need to create my own brand and I need understand the business side of the interiors industry. I just do not know where to start!
Omigoodness! That is SO exciting! I’m not sure if this is helpful or not but I browsed Pinterest and Creative Market for inspo when I was making my Brand Kit. Seeing what I liked and didn’t like helped bring clarity to what I was wanting.
I love that you are a woman of faith. I want to start my own venture and this was great inspiration. Would you say the interior design institute is worth the investment?
Hey! I'm so glad! For me, the Interior Design Institute was totally worth the investment. For a few reasons: 1. It confirmed that interior design really is a passion of mine. 2. It brought substance to the why and what of interior design - instead of it being an abstract, "I like it like this" kind of thing. 3. It empowered me to pursue it as my business. If you have any specific questions I haven't addressed in the two videos about IDI let me know and I'll see if I can answer them. :)
I graduated from the same institute and now got my sketchup degree from the same institute! I enjoyed the modules (lots of knowledge) exactly what I was looking for (I wanted a course that started from literally zero! A course that will help me as a beginner étoiles master my knowledge in interior design) now I can confidently tell what’s good and what’s wrong in any space! I also was looking for something that’s within my budget (and it was)… They also have a separate module that will give you all the keys to set up a business! Now I’m looking for inspiration here on UA-cam and fell on this gorgeous lady by coincidence who graduated from the same institute that’s insane! Now I’m full of hope again 🥰 I hope this helped you (and oh! When graduated, they offer you affiliation program/link that offers discount from the whole course, and you can get a free advanced module in return 😊)
Hello, thank you for your very good and complete explanation I am a designer and producer in the field of interior decorations with an experience of over 30 years and I am planning to immigrate to Portugal due to my son's educational migration. Thank you for your guidance on how to start my work in Portugal.
Thank so much for sharing your story really interesting to listening to you, i come here from you kitchen mistakes video which was great content, you got a new subscriber thanks again
Hey there Marisa, you've inspired me to start a channel of my own talking about my journey becoming a home remodel designer. UA-cam is filled with decoration persons, Ive found nobody doing what I do. I dont know anything about decoration, I draw plans for people that need a building permit. Thank you
Where did you originally post your pretty kitchen picture. Have you gotten professional jobs from there? Like potential clients reaching out on Facebook or something?
Hey! I posted it on Instagram. At first friends and family reached out. Then strangers who had either seen my Instagram or who were friends of people I had done work for. UA-cam also has generated clients for me. I wasn’t expecting ANY of that. 😉
Thank you for an inspiring video! Could you share if you learned any programs related to interior design on the course like Archicad or Revit? If not, how do you find working without using them? Thank you in advance ❤
I love this thank you much for this video! I am currently a project manager major and was thinking about getting my masters in interior design or just taking a course. My fear is that I cant draw that well so I keep wondering if this will be right for me. Ive always wanted to renovate homes which is why I chose PM since it would allow me to work with different people. I one day too hope to have my own renovation/interior design business. 😊
Glad it was helpful! This course is a great introduction to design. You'll definitely immerse yourself into design enough to see if you want to pursue your masters afterwards.
Hey Shollette, FULL SEND on your interior design aspirations if it is calling you! I could not draw for starters when I realized as an applicant, you are required to submit a portfolio of works comprising of basic drawings such as your 1 OR 2 Point perspectives, etc. - I knew that not being able to draw was not going to be the excuse I landed on. I ran to UA-cam, learnt how to draw the necessary and applied to BHC School of Design - they're based in Cape Town, South Africa (it was the only school I applied to) and 3 years later I graduated as an Interior Designer.
Thank you so much Marisa for this and every video!❤ I’m planning to start exactly the same school Interior design is my dream since I was a little girl! I’m just a bit nervous because I’m not good in drawing ! What do you think is it possible to learn trough course? Thank you so much for your time! ❤️
Hello!!! Sister in Christ here! Husband Suprised me with my LLC for design business! Feeling the imposter syndrome and haven’t been motived or done a project that excites me. Need some ideas on how to recharge and start over!
Imposter syndrome is real. If it helps, focus on the fact that there’s only one you. No one can do what you do the way you do it. ☺️ People who like your style will be drawn to you and that’s all that matters.
I used SketchUp for the assignment in the course, but started using a less robust program after that called Live Home 3D Pro. However, one of the advanced options with the Interior Design Institute is SketchUp, so if you have the time to learn it, that might be a great option.
You are so awesome! Thank you for sharing your story! I think your approach to your design business is truly refreshing 🙂You seem like a really good person ! I know you will do well ! I am currently trying to start my own business as well. But I currently feeling stuck , I think I may have imposter sydrome. Fight through it. Do or did you ever feel stuck in your journey to starting ?
Thank you so much! I really haven't faced imposter syndrome too much to be honest - but I know that's a real issue. For me, I believe that people will be drawn to me and my style and that those are my "people" - potential clients, cheerleaders, referrers, etc. If someone doesn't like me or my style, I don't want to work with them just as much as they wouldn't enjoy working with me. With that in mind there's room for everyone in interior design to have a place where they can flourish. Does that help? Wishing you all the best!!!
Honestly, Instagram. If your feed displays your work well, it's a great place to direct people to. My design IG is essentially like that still, but even before I had a website, I used IG as a portfolio. I don't use it for stories showing up daily too much these days, but people still come and see what I've done and it has generated the most business for me outside of word of mouth.
This is lovely to hear ur journey ❤. I always have this question, do you have to be handy . I know I can design well but my limitation is that I am not handy with DIYs and doing the 3d rendering☹️ . What’s ur advice on this . Thanks in advance
Heyy.. I just love interior designing. Im planning to start my higher education so soon and I just wanted to know if there’s enough demand for interior designing. Is there any risk in starting studing interior design?? Like do we find enough jobs outside??
Science to Interior Design! That's a broad spectrum of interests! You could dive right into a 3 or 4 year design program and immerse yourself in the training, or you can get a broad overview of the topic to see if you like it as much as you think you do. I did the latter at The Interior Design Institute. It's an online learning diploma course and gives a great foundation for the concepts of interior design. You can hear my review of it here: ua-cam.com/video/PLqyiWGU1VA/v-deo.html

May I ask how you price each job? Is it different from job to job? Or one flat fee?
I have packages on my website that I've priced based on how much time it will take me to complete one of them. Custom packages are priced by the hour.
I struggle with measurements
Have you considered an electric measuring tape?
