Oh I love this Jennifer! I'm also a self taught designer. I started in a similar way and now I also love teaching creative women how to start their own interior decorating businesses. It is definitely never too late!
I absolutely love what you had to say about serving others. I’m in customer service. It’s not for everyone. You have to be willing to to be that person-Helping others on their journey to a wonderful home. You make a difference, Jennifer. Thank you!
I love this! I’ve often thought I missed my calling because I love design and bringing together things to make your house beautiful. I’m 61 and stopped working 5 years ago and I do not have a degree in this area. You’ve given me hope!
I'm 63 and I feel like I have finally learned who I am, my creativity, and how resourceful I am. Feel like it has taken me my whole life to get to know myself!!
I love this. You have motivated me so much. I have 3 kids and no money to go to college for years, but decorating a space is a passion for me. I own a spa that I keep changing the designs just when I get bored… and my clients are always telling me I should get into interior designs as no matter how I change the place it’s always looking good. I’m not sure if this is healthy but decorating the salon spa just helps me mentally and emotionally so I would do it as a therapeutic session. I got tired and now I’m really looking into sharing my passion for designs with others!
Well, I will tell you this - when you have a passion for something, it never goes away! It moves us, fulfills us, and gives us joy. The beauty of design is we bring joy to others. And, to me, that is what makes me LOVE my job! If this is your passion, don't wait. Time and regret are two things we cannot change! You can do it! Sign up for my course, and join our wonderful community of supportive students!
I say I missed my calling. I was a surgical nurse working on a post-surgical floor for many years. My heart was always in designing. Love working with color and textures. I have built many homes for myself, and one was over 1 million. When I sold them, many sold without being put on the market. I am 68 years old. I guess I will just keep on changing my home. LOL....
I've always worked in customer service. I've done many design works for my friends and family over the years. This year my husband and I did a whole house renovation for a couple. It's something I really enjoy but I never took the steps to make it a career like I want to. Your amazing.
It’s awesome to have one person in the family that is paying the bills…because starting this business on your on is extremely hard…no rich spouse, no rich family members…that’s the story I’m looking for…start up on your on shoe strings…also to note…you do have to go to Interior Design School and to pass the NCIDQ exam in order to call yourself an Interior Designer…maybe not now…it was 20 years ago…also you need to learn design history to understand the different design, styles, principles, design elements & concepts ….and let me add to learn fashion design as well. Mainly … it just makes you a better knowledgeable designer…never stop learning!!! (see Decorator vs Interior Designer definition )….Calling yourself a decorator is not a bad word…it may keep you out of the courtroom.
I love your journey and the advice shared but let's not confuse anyone. Interior decorator and interior designer are not interchangeable terms. Anyone looking to be either one, do your research and the job possibilities for each one.
Wow Jennifer that is so admirable. I took some decorating courses and love the career but never went further like you. You have the right personality and talent. I staged my house before putting it on the market and the house sold in two weeks for above the asking price.
Norma! You need to pursue designing! It sounds like you have amazing talent! If you want to talk about how I can help you go from loving design to having a career in design sign up for a time to chat with me! calendly.com/jdsallabouthome/30min
Very inspiring, I like interior design bc it reflects someone soul in a home. Everybody is different and have different tastes on what is beautiful and that's what makes every house unique. I don't know if i want to be an interior designer but it is a really beautiful job.
Well, that was beautifully said! The home is the sanctuary! It is so important to have a place where we feel comforted and cared for! And, helping others create that space for themselves is an amazing job! Take care!
I was for sure! But, that is why not only do I have an online course, but, I coach my students as well! So that they are supported, encouraged, and motivated to succeed!
This is interior decorating, not interior design. They are distinctly different things - Interior Designers must be licensed and requires skills in architecture and drafting.
@@XudenGroupLLC You are correct, but she still is not lying, there is just more information to go along with what she said. That being said, there is still a big difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator.
I love this video it gives me so much hope. Are you able to share how you found the list of builders and how you were able to get in touch, and what did you say to them?
Sure! I went to the Builders Association when I heard there was going to be a Parade of Homes. I received this list of builders that were participating and I started calling them to see who might need help. When you say "free help" -you get really great responses!
I would love to do this. I have a passion for decorating. I posted a couple of videos of some rooms I decorated on my channel. I would love to chat with you about the course. I am 52 years old and I thought it was too late to start. It is inspiring hear it is not too late.

Of course, NOT! Most of my students range between 45-65. Think of it this way - the people that have the money to spend on design are usually between the ages of 45-65. They relate very well to people in their same age bracket! AND, besides... I am 57! Go for it!
