At the beginning, when I wanted to start an interior design business, I thought that I would never get clients without a portfolio or large body of work, a long list of contacts or a lot of money to invest in marketing and equipment to run my business.
The fear of failure held me back more than anything. I was afraid of not making enough money to survive and I wouldn’t leave my job even though I was working long hours in a job that was exhausting and soul destroying.

Thank you for a very inspiring video, you got me when you said towards the end “stop making excuses for yourself”...”don’t allow fear to hold you back”. I recently finish a Diploma in Interior design and I’m still reluctant and scared to implement what I want to achieve in the design industry. I hope that I will eventually let go of my personal fears and succeed in life.

We all feel fear and we all make excuses. We're human :-) To help you let go of personal fears and succeed you can start by noticing and listening to yourself. Becoming aware of your own thoughts and what makes you feel a certain way is the next step to overcoming your fears. Just watch and listen to your thoughts and feelings. You've already conquered the first step by wanting to let go and wanting to succeed. :-) Congratulations! xx

Hi Jo,I just bumped into this channel and am so impressed. Very insightful interior design content. I'm here to stay!💓
That said, I wanted to find out if its advisable to do both consultancy and projects as well as selling the interior design elements/decor pieces at the same time eg furniture, art pieces etc in order to diversify your options and so that one doesn't get to do the same thing every day.
I am a Civil Engineer by profession but currently doing my diploma in interior design and I need to have my goals straight before I finish and start the real work. Much admiration from Kenya and thank you for being you💞

Great question Tess! I teach that having at least two streams/avenues of income (preferably three once you're more established) is important for a balanced business that can withstand economic downturns or hardship and provides enough avenues and variety for work that keeps our role challenging yet interesting. In saying that, the ones you've chosen will be hard to manage on your own, especially as a start-up.
If it's something you're passionate about, I would consider either consultancy and a shop, just a shop (at the beginning) or just projects and consultancies. Running a shop is a full-time business and running projects is a full-time business. Consultancies or small projects (possibly e-designs) are great as you can throw them in between and make great money around your main income. Of course how you do this goes much deeper as it depends on the specific niche and business you're setting up. That's what we do in my program across a few months. I hope this helped guide you for now. Good luck with your course and thank you for taking the time to write!

I am working currently as a Mechanical Design Engineer & has good knowledge in 2D & 3D softwares to generate consumer products 3D models & Drawings. Am I anyway fit into this interior design business? Please suggest me what skills I need to acquire? My biggest worry is how to manage carpentery, electrical work. Can I run this interior design business without knowing carpentery & electrical work? Sorry if you feel my questions are silly. Anyway Grateful to you for your inputs in this video.

Hi Satish! Thank you so much for taking the time to write. I think the confusing thing about interior design is that everyone thinks there is only one way to do it. If you want to include carpentry management into your service, then that's great, but you can make money as an interior designer even if you don't have anything to do with carpentry or electrical work.
Interior design is such a huge field and you already have experience and knowledge in one niche area of it, so why not just start with that and evolve and grow into the interior designer you're dreaming of being?
There is an infinite number of ways to make this interior design career work for you. Make it your own. Don't give up, it's worth every second, good luck!

This is irritating. I just sat down to write a whole post. OK, here goes...
I' have several questions. I'm interested in doing Interior Design as a part-time job and have been doing a lot of research. I found out about the Interior Design Institute which offers what i want to do. The course lasts for 6 months and is accredited by the CID. Besides the CID, are there any other professional bodies i need to make sure the course is accredited by? I read somewhere the course should be recommended by BIID, but due to time and financial constraints, i don;t want to commit to anything that lasts for more than a year.
As someone who has no previous knowledge of Interior Design, is it advisable to jump straight into freelance work OR should i gain some work experience?

I thought your question deserved a proper answer so I decided to do a video and write a blog post to help answer your question. I'm sorry it took longer than expected! You can read it here: www.idbs.online/whats-the-best-course-to-do-to-become-an-interior-designer/

My math was not that great either! Don't be scared away because of what others say. I wasn't very good at maths but I am great at design and the maths that I need is relevant to what we do as designers so it makes sense to me and so I'm good at that part! All you need to understand is how to measure and how to count. The rest a computer program can help you with :-) Hope that helps x
