Dante's peak scared the crap out of me as a kid (I was 8 when it came out). Even those rare high end steam explosions are far short of what films like 2012 or bad docudramas will tell you is likely. Will it erupt again? Yes, absolutely. This is actually normal for so called "supervolcanoes", almost all of their eruptions are just normal volcanic eruptions. Who else misses the days we just got a simple disaster movie like this or twister, volcano. Now all we get are over the top scenarios like Greenland, geostorm.
How about, "The Day After Tomorrow," or "Deep Impact"? And, yeah, "Twister" was great. I appreciate the "what if" of "Volcano," but the greater feasibility of "Dante's Peak" gives it more likeability for me.
We drove through the filming site while returning from a road trip. They were about to film the scene where the highway collapsed. I was gassing the truck and my then husband went scouting because something was up. The town was in the disaster stage and I thought maybe they had suffered a quake (like are we safe to get gas here?). They were paying $200 a car for anyone that was stranded as they were about to close the highway. I had to be back for work. So we rushed like heck to get out of town before they closed the road.
Dante's Peak really hit home for a lot of us who lived thru the Mt St Helens eruption of May 18 1980. Not only did they set the location in WA but as you stated they went to Mt St Helens for filming. Also, the final scene of the movie was the actual Mt St Helens just post eruption. I lived in a small town about 250 miles NE of the volcano. I was 8 years old at the time. We heard about the eruption via the radio, My parents went to the store to get some last supplies, specifically a couple of large garbage cans with water liners and we filled them up. An hour later, it was getting dark, mind you this was before noon. Just past noon, it was pitch black, and ash was raining down on us, between 4 and 6 inches. When we saw light again the following day, it looked like a grey waste land. Its something that I will never forget. Dante's Peak really hit home for those of us who lived in the PNW, and credit to the film makers, the film had the look and feel of that day 40+ years ago.
That must've been scary, but I'm happy you all got out okay. I don't have volcanos where I live--hence why I can watch this movie and not something like Twister--so I can only imagine what it'd be like to live anywhere near one.
@@monsterhanna6691 Thank you, again, I lived 250 miles away, those in the area were not so lucky, I think it was 57 people that died during the eruption. The avalanche of debris from the collapsing north face not only killed the old man Harry Truman of Spirit Lake, but actually displaced the entire lake itself. ua-cam.com/video/IhU6jml6NY4/v-deo.html
@@jamesgizasson Definitely a once in a life time type event. I have shown my grandson some of what it was like that day thru old videos and news reports. I think where it really hit home for him that I was not feeding him a story was when we were preparing a garden area. We only had to dig down a short distance while turning over the soil when I hit a grey layer. He asked what it was, I told him it was compressed ash from the 1980 eruption. He collected some and put it in a jar.
Actually I like this movie better than Tommy Lee Jones's Volcano. This is obviously based off the 1980 Mount Saint Helens eruption. I remember that one old white guy who said he wasn't leaving his mountain and he became a sort of a folk hero, especially for the anti-government types but then of course the volcano, who doesn't give a damn about your political affiliations and when it erupted it completely destroyed his ranch he was living on and I do believe they never did find his body.
Very much agree. I had forgotten about the story of the guy who wouldn't leave his ranch until reading your comment. I believe, as well, there was somebody else (possibly a man/woman couple) who were camping near the volcano (St. Helen's) when it erupted; as well, they were never found afterwards.
That scene right as the volcano began to erupt completely made me super sad as a kid. Because of the little girl by herself crying holding the cat on the porch. That was rather haunting..☹️
When I saw this movie as a young adult in 1997, I thought that it was a fictional retelling of what happened to Mt. Saint Helens, Washington, in 1980, as, I was a kid watching it on the TV news back then.
I thoroughly enjoy this movie, it does everything right; the casting, location, setup, the volcano itself. I love the score, beautiful, grand, and terrifying.
I used to go through this area all the time. The production company actually paid for the major freeway (I90) overpass construction in exchange for being allowed to film in the town. The overpass is still there to this day and it's beautiful!
I'll never forget getting the NTSC Laser Disc imported from the US with it bombastic AC3 soundtrack. I'd not long had my 5.1 system, I was convinced the opening credits had ripped a hole in my subwoofer. Stunning stuff at the time.
I find it interesting that Dante’s Peak and Volcano came out pretty close together and while I enjoyed both, I preferred Dante’s Peak for it’s realism. The same can be said about Deep Impact and Armageddon, both great movies, but Deep Impact was more realistic and less grandiose, which I preferred.
In my opinion, Armageddon was far more entertaining with a better pace than Deep Impact. It was one of Michael Bay's best films, which I know isn't saying much.
Liked them both too but prefer Armageddon, it's more fast paced and entertaining, it's the classic popcorn movie. Prefer Dante's Peak over Volcano for the very same reason.
My husband once told me that when two movies that are essentially about the same thing, one is usually the "guy flick", and the other is the "chick flick". The same thing happened with Armageddon: a movie called Deep Impact was released at about the same time, and while Armageddon seemed to be focused mainly on the action, Deep Impact was more about the stories of the characters.
Dante's Peak will always be my perfect disaster film! It has everything!! Definitely beats out any other volcano film released. My favorite!! Thanks Minty!!!♥️
Our teacher made us watch this in class when this came out because of the scientific facts it included! We literally watched the movie after reading the volcano chapters in our textbook and heard many familiar terms and statements almost verbatim in the movie in complete astonishment! Our teacher was right and she made us learn, infact we all passed the corresponding quizzes and tests. True story
A factoid in regards to Mount St Helens. There was an 80 year old man by the name of Harry Truman (that was his name). He lived near the volcano and refused to leave. He perished in it along with his cats which I believe we're about 30.
Did you know that Pierce Brosnan also saved Jamie Rene Smith (the little actress) from drowning? According to an interview with Linda Hamilton, when they filmed the rowboat scene, the boat sank as soon as they all boarded it. Jamie could not swim, but Pierce was close to her and able to grab her until a crewman got her. She was fine, just shaken up.
Volcano has a more "close to home" feeling since it takes place in a big metropolis, but Dante's Peak wins at having more heart in it and making you really cheer for all those people to get safe in the end
I loved this movie. Well written, and great cast. Loved the effects too. Reminded me of when Mt. St. Helens blew up when I was a kid, and living in the Pacific Northwest, that mountain is very close by and it's eruptions made a massive impact on growing up here.
I think the film's solid, and i really like Pierce Brosnan & Linda Hamilton (I once had a 20-minute conversation at LAX with Hamilton in 2006; she was headed to Santa Fe, I was headed back to buffalo. She asked me if I was arriving or departing, and I replies that I didn't know if I was coming or going, and we were off to the races from there. I didn't acknowledge that she was Linda Hamilton, but I knew it was her~yes, I know she has a twin sister~ which made the experience cooler for me. A true story that I can't prove, ha ha!).
The following is respectfully submitted with peace and love. "Whom" is used instead of “who” as the object of a verb or preposition- like "for whom the bell tolls," "to whom it may concern," and/or "who made whom?" Not "whom also that very same year provided the special effects . . . "
Personally I liked both volcano movies. Pierce was just good enough to make me forget he was in Mrs. Doubtfire. I'm just sad I didn't get a chance to see Volcano in theaters.
Very glad you reviewed this movie. I saw this in the five dollar bin at Walmart I bought it and it has become one of my favorite movies. Very much agree with everything you said about it. And the Actors traces was excellent and spot on. If you haven’t watch this movie definitely watch it if you like disaster movies. I would give it two thumbs up.
I remember seeing this in the theater, and having an elderly couple sitting in front of us clap when the dog was saved. Looking back on it, it was really cute.
This is one of my favorite movies! Also, we are all critics of our own movies. For some reason, I have always loved all of the movies that the "critics" hate. I never follow the "critics".
One other bit of trivia: The aerial shot of the ruins of the town and the volcano's collapsed and ruined caldera after they come in and get them out at the end was actually cut from some news footage that had been shot immediately after the Mt. Saint Helens eruption. From what I understand, they used it, not only because it was probably the most realistic thing they could use to showcase the destruction that would have befallen a town directly in the path of an active volcano, but as a tribute to the people affected by the Mt. Saint Helens eruption.
I have a huge spot in my DVD collection for disaster movies, and this is one of my favourites. I will clearly never be a movie critic as I love this movie and twister. Never saw the connection with Jaws through, cool connection. Thanks for doing this one Minty.
I remember seeing this in the theater, as a kid. Loved it! Still want both the square body Suburban and the square body 3+3 service body truck. Heck even the Toyota Land Cruiser was cool.
This is my all time favorite movie, I remember my dad renting it when I was 8 when it first came out on vhs and not thinking about it for maybe 6-8 years lay as a teenager and renting the dvd from the blockbuster on my birthday. Since then I bought the dvd, then blu ray, now own it digitally through apple movies. I watch it at least twice a year and showed it to my now wife a couple of weeks into dating 😂. I did know most of the things in this video but not everything so thanks for sharing.
Dante's Peak officially turns 25 today! I'm happy my dad bought the vhs we watched it repeatedly in the Adirondacks Amazing it went up against Volcano the same time but this is more scientifically accurate according to the US geological survey Made $178 million from a $110 million budget The critics didn't take kindly too it saying the disaster scenes are excellent but the story and dialogue is consistently bad Pierce Brosnan is a terrific lead next to Linda Hamilton though and I really like the kids too James Newton Howard and John Frizzle did a very good job with the score but it's a shame Frizzle's composing of music didn't take off and that Charles Hallahan passed away from a heart attack several months after the movie opened Yes there's scientific liberties and many of the volcano activity is slightly exaggerated/contrived but the movie is still one of my favorites growing up Stupid but awesome Pretty cool since its release it garnered a cult following among genre enthusiasts
Your comparison between it and how it follows Jaws, script and action wise, was spot on. All of the disaster movies followed pretty much the same formula anyway. Problem, comes up, only one person realizes what can happen and usually does, nobody else believes it can, or will happen, and therefore becomes the hero, by saving his family, etc, etc, add infinitum.
Thanks Monty for this video ! Talking about Volcanos, anyone checking out Yellowstone Park lately? Over 127 earthquakes a day lately and Old Faithful isn't going off on time anymore. The Bison are wanting to leave their normal areas. IF....Yellowstone Park GOES BOOM we could be in trouble big time. Just in case better get your survival gear ready folks.
One you might've liked: It was part of the Universal Studios: Hollywood tour. They had a tunnel that made you feel like you were tipping over, while in truth, the tunnel was rotating and the tram stayed still. It replaced a previous attraction in which you went into an ice cave. As a joke, they had a sign before you entered the tunnel with the population and elevation (which I forget) and when you leave the "same" sign could be seen with Population: 0, Elevation: 0.
my ex lived in wallace idaho and i actually went to her graduation there. they showed me where the CGI volcano was and i went to the lake in the movie. it was pretty cool
Small correction: Digital Domain set up shop at the old Van Nuys Navel Station, not “airport”. I worked for them on this flick in ‘97. It was fun! Great job on this video. Yes, it's a flick more people should see and know about.
Thanks minty. I was curious if you ever thought about doing a series about twin movies. Like dante's peak vs volcano analyzing the similarity and differences and who did it better. Box office numbers, critic reviews, public reception, etc. I think now their are so many that you could do and probably some that most people wouldnt realize where a twin cause sometimes 1 over shadows the other tremendously. Anyway love your videos hope you look into this possibility. Ty for all you do
A couple trivia items for you: I live near Wallace ID, and had worked on the film crew. 1, Wallace and cities a couple hundred miles east of it recieved several inches of ash fall from the Mt. St.Helens eruption. It was like nighttime all day for a couple weeks. The ash was hazardous to breath and would destroy your engine if you drove your car. 2. Wallace is most notorious in the region for the presence of several operating brothels, a couple of them can be seen in clips from the film in your video, however, the signage was removed for the filming.
I love Dante's Peak. More realistic than Volcano. I always found it interesting that many disaster films of the 1990s came in pairs. Dante's Peak vs Volcano. Armageddon vs Deep Impact, etc
I saw Dante's Peak in Feb. of 1997. I loved it as a kid! In fact I wore out 2 VHS copies of the film and because I loved the movie so much I would build the town of Dante's Peak with my Hot wheels car sets and act out the scenes a long with the film. I even had hot wheels that represented the characters vehicles, namely Mayor Wando's Blue Toyota Land Cruiser, and Paul's red Dodge van. I did a similar set up for the bridge scene from True Lies.
Varese Sarabande has actually released the complete soundtrack on their club label. The "coffee time" moment has stayed with me for years! I love quoting it!
Wallace is actually a nice little town. I used to drive through it before interstate 90 was built, which incidentally would’ve actually destroyed the town if the highway wasn’t rerouted and elevated.

Great film! Some of the best miniature fx I've ever seen!
@@monsterhanna6691 There are several documentaries on the event, The one I posted above is only about 3 minutes, showing the collapse of the mountain.
Just reading your description made my heart stop. I grew up around earthquakes, wildfires, and a couple crazy storms; but that is something else!
It’s one of my favourite movies and I watch it at least once a year. Super underrated for sure!
The old guy had the same name as a U.S president. Harry Truman I think.
@Alex T Ah, thanks.
@Krogan Love probably why critics liked "Volcano" over "Dante's Peak;" critics love to trash L.A./Hollywood.
The last page of my high school yearbook that year simply said "Harry Truman Lives".
That scene right as the volcano began to erupt completely made me super sad as a kid. Because of the little girl by herself crying holding the cat on the porch. That was rather haunting..☹️
Pierce Brosnan is brilliant as Harry Dalton and Linda Hamilton is brilliant as Rachel Wando. 😀👍
They have such great chemistry
@@ThatMissQuin you got that right. 😀👍
When this movie first came out, I remember hearing that the Mt. Saint Helens incident was the main inspiration behind the movie.
We had this on VHS growing up, I watched it so many times the tape doesn't work anymore This movie is so underrated
When I saw this movie as a young adult in 1997, I thought that it was a fictional retelling of what happened to Mt. Saint Helens, Washington, in 1980, as, I was a kid watching it on the TV news back then.
This is an awesome movie. Filmed in my home town. Love seeing some of the local town shots. It's time to watch this again.
And then the DTS LASERDISC wow XXL LFE BASS
I find it interesting that Dante’s Peak and Volcano came out pretty close together and while I enjoyed both, I preferred Dante’s Peak for it’s realism. The same can be said about Deep Impact and Armageddon, both great movies, but Deep Impact was more realistic and less grandiose, which I preferred.
I agree but Deep Impact actors were much more forgettable compared to Armageddon
Same. I like both Volcano movies but Dante's Peak was better. I liked Deep Impact story better yet the SFX in Armageddon trumps them. 👍
Olympus has fallen and white House down.
Dante's Peak was one of my favorite movies growing up and I still love it today!
To this day my husband still says "coffee, coffee, coffee!" every time I want coffee. LOL😂
You have a keeper. 😂👏
True story
Cool teacher!😎😌
A factoid in regards to Mount St Helens. There was an 80 year old man by the name of Harry Truman (that was his name). He lived near the volcano and refused to leave. He perished in it along with his cats which I believe we're about 30.
Those were some old cats. Lol, sorry couldn't resist.
Shaken not stirred
I do love "Dante's Peak," but I think I love "Volcano" just a bit more. There's room for both of them though! Great video, Minty!!!
The part where the grandma loses her legs was one of the saddest and scariest scenes I ever saw as a kid. Shout-out to the makeup-effects! =)
Happy Turkey day Minty! I am extremely grateful for all you do for us fans.
There was a pretty cool Dante's Peak ride at Universal Studios years ago. Don't know if they still have it.
I remember seeing this at a "Second Run" theater called The Devon & I loved it. I'm watching Dante’s Peak right now. Love your channel so much.
This was the last movie role of Elizabeth Hoffman who played Ruth before retiring.
RIP: February 8, 1926 - August 21, 2023
Very glad you reviewed this movie. I saw this in the five dollar bin at Walmart I bought it and it has become one of my favorite movies. Very much agree with everything you said about it. And the Actors traces was excellent and spot on. If you haven’t watch this movie definitely watch it if you like disaster movies. I would give it two thumbs up.
1:02 YES! My favourite quote from this film!!
Its one of my all time favourite disaster movies. This is one movie that I will never forget about.
"2010 consensus" Hilarious, but I do appreciate the effort it takes to get all the narration right. your videos are some of the best on the internet.
I agree , the movie is Superbly made.. acting is excellent too👍👍👍
I have a huge spot in my DVD collection for disaster movies, and this is one of my favourites. I will clearly never be a movie critic as I love this movie and twister. Never saw the connection with Jaws through, cool connection. Thanks for doing this one Minty.
I really got to give you respect minty, you're one of the most consistent channels in producing content on UA-cam.
I'm happy my dad bought the vhs we watched it repeatedly in the Adirondacks
Amazing it went up against Volcano the same time but this is more scientifically accurate according to the US geological survey
Made $178 million from a $110 million budget
The critics didn't take kindly too it saying the disaster scenes are excellent but the story and dialogue is consistently bad
Pierce Brosnan is a terrific lead next to Linda Hamilton though and I really like the kids too
James Newton Howard and John Frizzle did a very good job with the score but it's a shame Frizzle's composing of music didn't take off and that Charles Hallahan passed away from a heart attack several months after the movie opened
Yes there's scientific liberties and many of the volcano activity is slightly exaggerated/contrived but the movie is still one of my favorites growing up
Stupid but awesome
Pretty cool since its release it garnered a cult following among genre enthusiasts
Maybe, but I feel like that could be ANY movie and I doubt that Jaws either started it and/or owns it. Not everything has to be about Jaws.
Survival gear? I'll stick with my survival BEER!! Might as well enjoy it while I can, if Yellowstone goes boom, we're fuct....
Dante's Peak is one of my all time favorite movies. I watch it wayyyyyy more than I should - at least a dozen times a year.
Thanks Minty, for getting to this favored classic.
*I love this movie. classic 90's*
my ex lived in wallace idaho and i actually went to her graduation there. they showed me where the CGI volcano was and i went to the lake in the movie. it was pretty cool
The Suburban they drive in this movie was one of my favorite 90s movie vehicles
Knocked this video out of the park, bro.
All the best from Maryland
One of your best intros minty
Ty for all you do
I second this idea.
That actually sounds like a great idea! 😍
One of my all time favourite movies! Thanks for doing this one 👍🏻
I really enjoyed this movie 🎥 when it came out and still enjoy it to this day! Keep up the good work Minty on your channel 👏👏👏
I remember this movie when I was a kid. The hot spring scene always freaked me out.. it's a good movie
A couple trivia items for you:
I live near Wallace ID, and had worked on the film crew.
Same! I always quote it from time to time. 😂
"I've always been better at feeling out volcanoes than people and politics."
That line is the reason I loved coffee as an adult
great movie. the truck in the lava scene is terrifying.
Minty the coffee joke is a parody of Rob Schneiders Saturday Night Live Copy Man Character.
Wallace is actually a nice little town. I used to drive through it before interstate 90 was built, which incidentally would’ve actually destroyed the town if the highway wasn’t rerouted and elevated.
2 years ago I actually went rhe town where they filmed Dante's Peak, Wallace Idaho.
Both this film and Volcano are brilliant films. Own both of them. I personally like this one better
Sad and heartfelt movie. One of the best to come out of the '90's.
I have this movie on DVD and my daughter and I have watched it multiple times, and we both love it. thank you for a wonderful review Minty :-)
