    PSA: if the farmhouse, butcher block trolley is going to have food cut or prepped on it, DO NOT use stain or varnish as your final coat! Using varnish definitely doesn't make wood cut-resistant (nothing does), and if you happen to cut it, you will risk ingesting the varnish/harmful chemicals it is made with. Only use butcher block oils, beeswax/mineral oil mixtures, or food safe finishes on natural wood surfaces in the kitchen!

  • @helenharward
    @helenharward 6 років тому +446

    Nicely done! I really like the countertops.
    PSA to everyone else who's watching: please, do NOT make any changes to your apartment/rent house without permission from your landlord. Those changes on the countertop, cabinet handles or touch up paint on the walls (it's doubtful that you'll have the EXACT same color) can be viewed as violating your lease/rental agreement or just plain inconsiderate to your landlord.
    So just ask them first. The worst thing they can say is no. :)

    • @alexandria6007
      @alexandria6007 6 років тому +28

      Exactly! If you don't like the cabinet handles then you can get cheap ones from Amazon or anthropologie (on sale) and just put the old ones back when you move out. It's not that much of an investment because you can just reuse them in a future project or apt as well. Odd colors or places needing paint touchups, you can cover up with plants or paintings or removable wallpaper.

    • @reeflarkin1919
      @reeflarkin1919 6 років тому +33

      repainting handles probs wouldn't even be noticed but I'm pretty sure if you said can I repaint/make it not look so old they'd say yes. the countertops were done with contact- very easily removed, I mean do people not even watch the video? she said it many times. I've lived in many rentals and most landlords aren't going to complain it you touch-up damage, unless you use the wrong colour paint and make it look worse.

      The countertops was done with a completely and easily removable contact paper. How is a giant sticker which leaves no residue in violation of a lease? I've rented from some serious *ssh*les and even they wouldn't have cared as long as I took it off myself.

      Wait, so some landlords don't let you paint your walls??? Here in Germany you can do almost everything you want to your wall, painting, drilling holes etc. - some people even tear the whole wall down to make a bigger room. The only rule is that you have to undo it when you move out (painting the walls white, filling in holes etc.)

    Great tips. Here’s one for you, your plant is leggy cut it back some. Put the cut pieces in water to re-root them. By going this the original plant will grow fuller & you will have new plants to add to it or to start a new pot.

    Re shelving - who said the landlord put it up to begin with? As a landlord, I don't care if a long term tenant makes improvements that don't actually affect the structure. No one cut into/knocked down a wall. The only objection I would have is the contact paper on the countertop. It looks good for a little while, but is totally impractical when cooking. It doesn't hold up to knives, hot temps or even day-to-day use, and it is absolute hell to remove. Save it for the shelves. Refinishing the cabinet hardware is absolute genius; less waste and they look brand new.

      My apt will be renovated when I move out because I have been in my apt for so long. But I know several people in my building that have done things like replace knobs , replace shower heads or paint walls as long as you return it to the same condition it was in when you moved in. But there is such a thing as wear and tear and the longer you are in an apt the more run down its going to get so they have to expect that either you or they will have to update your apartment.They can't put off those things forever. However we have tenants that have been in their apartments this building for over 35 years.

    • @soudeaforbes
      @soudeaforbes 5 років тому +45

      Actually, I did this in a studio. They were still great after 10 months, even with hot temps- surprising but they totally do hold up- and it was super easy to remove (took less than 15 minutes). As far a knives, I have always used a cutting board so it's just plain weird to me that people cut directly on any counter that's not made of butcher block.

    • @strangeduckling
      @strangeduckling 5 років тому +24

      Actually, I know of several people who put contact paper on their kitchen counters, and, with regular use, it still looks brand new after several years.
      Most people don't cut directly onto the counter, and most people don't take a pan straight from the stove onto the counter (because that would mess up even a normal counter), so as long as you're not an idiot it should be fine.

    I would LOVE to see you redo a mobile home! Mainly the kitchen and bathroom. That would help so many people. So many people who live in Mobile Homes, absolutely love the old-school, traditional, farmhouse-style. But there can be some tricks to redecorating this type of space. For example, the walls. Taking down cabinets. That's my current dilemma. I'm purchasing a trailer, that has basically all of the cabinet doors ripped off. So I was thinking open shelving for the top cabinets, and replace the doors on the bottom cabinets. Basically, I want it to look like floating butcher block for the open shelving. But doing stuff like that in a mobile home, is not the same as doing it in a standard home. I just think a lot of your viewers would really be interested in this. And especially if you put mobile home in the title, there are just so few videos on this type of stuff, I think it would do really well. Thanks!

    I think I'd rather have convenient, easy to reach items even if its not as pleasing to the eye. And I dont know if I'd be able to prep on contact paper😅 Another cheap paint tip though is asking for paint that other people didnt want or left behind. They mark it down to about 60% at my Home Depot.

      Use silicone or acrylic to seal the seams. Also use a large roll of contact paper to avoid seams within the surface. I used to it for my window sill and it's totally fine eventhough I always make a huge mess watering the plants.

      I covered my ugly counters with contact paper and its held up for about 3 years now. I use my kitchen alot just like everyone else and I've had no problems. It doesn't warp it or make it wavy. Just tuck it in like they did or use some clear sealant on the edges. Edit: ALWAYS USE A CUTTING BOARD. As long as you never directly cut onto the counters it's easy to keep it looking nice.

My landlord allowed me to makeover my whole kitchen (new counters, paint, flooring etc), and I documented the whole process on my youtube. I think nowadays some landlords are more willing to allow tenants to make updates, especially if it will improve the overall look of the property.

    Hi Alexandra!
    I used that contact paper from your video for my kitchen! It worked great!!
    I also got their window frosting as a gift for leaving a review, and it works great (for smaller windows). I have a large window, and with a seam it's not the greatest... But! I may create a design with multiple seems so it looks intentional!

      So happy to hear that Alysha! The contact paper is amazing, right? It's still holding up perfectly fine in the kitchen! And thanks for the tip on the window frosting :)

    As a landlord I would hate my tenants for contact-papering the countertop. It looks cheap because it is cheap, and it will probably start peeling up in the corners in a month. Contact paper often, not always, shrinks after it is applied.

      Today's vinyl contact paper is not your mom's contact paper of yesteryear. It holds up very well as long as you use a cutting board (and who doesn't) when using knives, and is removable. Labor intensive for the install AND removal, but that is for the tenant to worry about. It is an inexpensive way to hide ugly counter tops that the cheap landlord did not put money/thought into.

      I’ve installed over a hundred rolls of contact paper over the past 5 years (in shelves, surely not on countertops). Con-tact brand, and I recommend that brand. It holds up for a year or two, but not much longer than that-that’s why I have to keep replacing it.

    cupboard doors idea : use a sander, scraper and some wood filler to fix up the chipboard doors, then paint them with a sealing paint.

    Hey, Alexandra, I like your diy videos. About 10 minutes ago I watched another video. more recent, that looks to be about the same kitchen. Is it really? I love the marble-like paper for the counter from this video and the pink backsplash from the later video ;)

    The kitchen looks very nice now but to be honest it's mostly impractical to store the books where they are now and also the pots and pans. Some of us are just not that tall and to get out a ladder or stool all the time is not practical.

      Collapsible stools are a thing... you can easily tuck it behind the door or even slot in between thin spaces.
