*It amazes me to this day that companies who create this much food waste aren't being forced to donate that food to food banks/etc.*
To be clear, the government shouldn't be forcing them. ALL THE PEOPLE WHO PROTEST CONSTANTLY ABOUT STUFF LIKE THIS SHOULD BE the one's forcing them.
So why don't they protest it? Because it isn't a "popular cause", and most protesters only care about popularity.
      It's literally sad.

There was a lawsuit that happened many years ago with Tim Hortons.
Some empathetic employee gave donuts to a homeless man at the end of the day, and for people who don't know, Tim Horton's slogan is " Always fresh"
So they got sued for not delivering fresh donuts. That's the reason why, they are liable if they gave you old donuts and you get sick.

Just think, if they're going to give away the remaining donuts at the end of the day for free would any person with a brain buy donuts ~1 hour before it closes? Plus people could even make a habit of just coming around for the free donuts. Making them lose potential customers.

    • @joe-mf8ps
      @joe-mf8ps Рік тому +396

There has never been a lawsuit such as this. Homeless people famously can't afford things, much less a lawyer. Point being, companies say this simply to not give out free food and force people to buy it. Not about covering their asses at all as they are not serving or charging people for this free food, therefore it isn't a transaction. It is merely one party giving food to another

For those saying that they should still give food away for free: if they did, people would wait until closing time to get the food for free instead of buying it fresh. They also want to avoid that.

I’ve heard a story of a restaurant giving their leftovers to some homeless people. Apparently, one of them get greedy and sued the restaurant for food poisoning. To most companies throwing away expired food stuffs in the trash is cheaper than a lawsuit.

If there were food leftovers they would throw it out or us employees would steal it before they would do that. Like whole cheese plates with hundred of dollars of cheese and fruit. 😂

Sure, it's bad business practice, "profits, profits blah blah"... but it's still food going to waste when millions of people can't feed themselves enough in the US, and that's still pretty disgusting and shady to see even for someone like me who likes money a lot.
You guys just need to pass laws to force good behavior and company practices around food distribution and consumption.
As an example, in France, multiple laws have passed to force businesses (restaurants and stores) to prevent waste (such as stop to cook if the thing cooked ain't selling or always asking the customer if he wants a doggy bag to take home), make something of waste that hasn't gone bad either by giving it to an association or reusing it to cook future things, and if it has gone bad use it to make compost or feed animals. Aditionally, it's forbidden to throw or destroy food that's still good for human consumption, and if your business is big enough (either by size or money made per year) you must have a program to collaborate with a food aid association to give your waste and ensure the quality of what you're giving. There are even regulations around those lines in the industry/massive food production sectors.
And even with all of those measures, it's still not perfect (notably because its difficult to enforce them everywhere, but most business go along with it), but we're on the right track.
Thing's haven't gone terribly for businesses here, people are still buying, enjoying.

They can't give them to people but you can quite literally do the exact thing they did and just grab them out of the trash. Nothing is stopping anyone from doing it.

Yea basically the reason why is because everything has a shelf life predetermined by someone else and anything after that shelf life given to customers would make the company liable for any food borne illness that one may get from eating that food

Someone in the comments said about expired food. The donuts arent expired. The actual reason why they dont give away the donuts is because when humans find a loophole they get greedy. Imagine a bunch of people coming in after closing time to finnese unlimited free donuts. It all ties back into greed.

      1. they tried to give it for free in the past and got sued when some homeless recipient of the food got sick
      2. anything other than giving it for free at the store will add to operational cost, why bother
      3. people are assholes. they will find a cheat to a system based on a goodwill.

Krispy Kreme actually sells their leftover doughnuts to local farmers to feed their pigs.
And I used to cook at a hotel that sold Krispy Kremes. Unfortunately, this was durong the beginning of the low carb movement so we had dozens left at the end of the day. They'd bring them to the kitchen and we'd put them in the break room and take them home. The hotel manager realized how much money we were losing, so we had to figie out ways to utilize them in the kitchen. I was the primary dessert cook, so i got creative. I started making bread pudding, milkshakes, made a dessert called Krispy Creme, Creme Brulee with a glazed goughnut baked in, strawberry shortcakes, beer battered fried doughnuts, we were making Luther Burgers, grilled cheese. It was wild.

There is a mall where they have a bakery kind of shop that gives everything at fifty percent off after 9pm. They also make an announcement in the whole mall about it. They sell all of it sells out by 9:15 pm.

I used to work at dunkin 2 years ago and they do this everyday. The reason is because of the yeast in the bread it rises overnight and “could get people sick” because you’re under light. I gave homeless people almost everything I would double bag the donuts, bagels, etc so when I threw them in the trash they would still be clean so they can eat them and get the after hours. Did that for years

I used to get all of Publix and Krogers vegetables that those tossed away to feed to the hogs on a farm I worked at as a teenager and they quit doing that because of some similar issues with getting sued for expired food. I even tryed to prove it to the manager to come and watch where it’s going the 100+ hogs and pigs absolutely love it.

It’s the same for Krispy Kreme they throw away at their donuts too but they’re in boxes so they’re definitely fresh.
