    I've just watched this. Being an Orca Whale lover, this has broken my heart.
    They were so cruel during Luna's life, he was craving attention and was lonely, why they took that away from him I will never know, they were doing more harm than good.
    All of Seaworld need to see this - they belong in the wild, not in aquariums.
    My heart is shattered and my faith in humanity has gone lower but slightly restored by some in the movie

      But she died at the hands of humans…they knew it was inevitable because of how she followed boats. She died horribly from a tug boat propeller.
      Picture the pain of being shredded by a propeller. She trusted humans too much. How do people not get that was dangerous for her. We screw everything up.

      @@MonaRoo88 "We" don't screw anything up. The government screws everything up. The whale was doing great before the government showed up. It died a few months after the government starting setting 100k fines on anyone that touched the whale. It got far more aggressive once that happened because it thought it was being abandoned by its pod. Hadn't been so much as scratched by a prop for 6 years.

    Everyone, please do your part and make sure you tell everyone to go see this film as soon as it's out! The more money it makes in the first three cities, the more theatres it can reach around the country and the world, touching more people. I live in the midwest and would love to see the film show here in Missouri.

    I watched this movie last night and was so touched by the story, the whale, the people of the town who first were giving everything to keep him there and than dithed him so heart breaking. I disagree with the department who was in my view of point mostly responsible for his bad behavior. And the people who trying to get him outta there, how they will know whats best for him? Its not like he was there for month until he started to befriend humans. HE (!!) choose it, how can it be wrong?!

    Not sure why comments and the description are so positive. Of course at times this film was "heart-warming," but it's much more complex than that, and it forces us to ask how sentimentality and perceived species "similarities" blind us, how we can't think outside of our anthropocentric, self-centered frames of reference and see how much harm this inability can potentially cause, regardless of our intentions.

      I think you're probably right. There were death threats against Luna, and there were rumors this Tug Boat Capt. did it on purpose. . .I'm not sure how a person can be that evil to hurt this animal that wanted nothing but some love and companionship.

    @Necraeon where are you getting that from ????? Luna was not there to make the people happy....give me a break, it was the people that were selfish and wanted to keep him there. If you know anything about orcas you will know they are a family unit for life and that is what he was longing for, people were mere temporary replacements...he needed his own species to communicate with and interact with the way he should have...can people speak whale??? @Necraeon Wow, really....so it is all about the happiness of the community who spend time with him and interact and go home to their family...so what about Luna's family???? They are in WA that is where he came from. Fortunately, the conservationist had it right on the money, it was not about what was right for the community but what is right for Luna and now he is dead at the hands of a boat prop because he always got too close just to make the community happy, he paid with his life...thx Luna

    @Necraeon it stems from either illness or misguidedness, yes things happen but the key is that it is done in the wild where they belong also I would rather see an animal die in the wild where they belong then to have them caged up and performing tricks to once again to please people atleast in the ocean they can swim hundreds of miles a day as whales and dolphins (orca is the largest dolphin) do..it is called freedom...Look up Lolita at the Miami Seaquarium see how happy she is.

    The DFO made a small effort to help the whale but the first nations on Vancouver Island protested it because they thought this mammal was a reincarnation of some chief. They are just as much to blame for this as the DFO is. Superstition is something humanity should get rid of

    @ugvug you are right, the interactions that were made were wrong, he should have been captured and returned back to the waters of washington where his family still is, just like what the washington state government did for Canada with Springer (A73) instead of the First Nations getting involved everytime the governments made attempts to lure him into a pen to be taken back to WA and thinking that he was a reborn chief, everyone needed to realize that he needed to go home

  • @ekolaktic8356
    @ekolaktic8356 11 років тому

    Reido. I can understand your emotions but I think your reaction is a little misguided. Don't confuse superstition (which is based on fear) with age old nature-based spirituality (which usually manifests as respect - according to the film, they did initially ask for the orca to be left alone). It's tempting but fruitless to point blame in these situations, yet I admit I was most frustrated with Michael's search for Luna after the storm. For all we know, Luna might have been voluntarily leaving.

    Movie spoiler...........The movie could be a case study of how unquestioned human feelings, wants and desires can lead to some really bad choices. Or perhaps this film could offer a lesson in unbridled, anti government, mob mentality. As predicted by wildlife experts, the young whale suffers a grotesque end. There is absolutely no question that the animal suffered and died because of the protestors , but in post 1960’s Hollywood, the crowd is always right, and the government is always wrong. I knew that there would be no real break from the usual film making formula, but I hung on to the closing credits, waiting for just one of the enlightened, civil disobedience people to express remorse. Au contraire; they continued with the same absurd emotional reasoning. Some spoke with great passion; as though they had done some great service to the minced animal .
    Most of the film plays like a collection of local idiots at war with common sense, and just when it seems that sanity might win the day, we learn that; ( Another spoiler ) whales are people too ! True story. In the end the filmmakers give no recognition to the only sane people in this film; so I would like to offer my own appreciation and my sympathies to all of the wildlife experts and government workers who were the real hero’s in this sad event. T.K.
