This is the THE definitive video to get a guitarist onboard with open tuning! Over the last 40 years I have repeatedly tried open tuning, but kept going back to standard tuning. This video changed all that! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this and explain everything so well!
Yep. Pretty good lesson! I've been playing the same old freaking chords and songs for years and too lazy to change tuning....until now....got you a new fan!
really appreciate the enthusiasm and being steeped in blues.. reaching that flat 7 when barring the 4 or the 5 is a bit beyond what I can reach.. something like that used to be something I just had to forget about.. but now, in open G, it sounds fine to hit the 4 chord then release it as I go up to the 4 chord's flat 7.. Great lesson! Subscribed & lookng forward to more 🤙🤘

Excellent lesson ! I just recently tuned one of my Tele's to open G to play some Stones songs. I wanted to explore more possibilities and you did it for me . Great job and attitude towards your audience !

@@doubledsrockschool I've been learning to play slide guitar on my original 1987 Guild Dreadnought D-25 in open G . This video helped me understand how to start playing, without the slide. I bookmarked your channel, thanks.
Hello Double D ! I'm one year in , should have picked up the acoustic 50 years ago because now I find I can't put the thing down . This is probably totally off topic - so apologies in advance ... One of my fave songs ever is Wild Horses by R/S . I learnt it in Standard and was quite happy with it , but felt something was missing ... ( christmas pud without brandy butter kinda thing ) Today , I came across a tutorial doing the song in Open G ,(Keith's chosen thang ) and , My God , it transformed the song totally . Sounds stunning / beautiful . And your above demo around the possibilities of Open G have really got me thinking ! So , just a simple thank you from London UK . ps : the item behind you on the Z amp brought back memories of my ex Mother-in-Law ... 😲
@doubledsrockschool I am curious if you have played in c sharp open slightly flattened? I heard somewhere Hendrix used it. My 73 D-28 resonates nicely in that range. Anyway thanks again.
I normally play in Eb tuning with my own band. I tuned up to A 440 so it would be easier to follow for everyone watching. Hendrix and the band mostly tuned by ear to each other, so there were many night where they played in tunings that were.....organic. 😆 I love tuning in open G a semitone down. (Open F#?) It's fat and warm sounding.
Hey D. I just found your channel. I want to learn more about playing my guitar. I am 75 years old, but I can still learn. I know the cords, but I know nothing about any kind of picking. I hope I can learn from you. Thanks for sharing.👍👍🍁
Here is another option. Tune the guitar to Open A. Instead of of lowering the 6th, 5th and 1st down a whole tone, try raising the 4th, 3rd and 2nd string up a whole tone. You'll get the same kind of tuning as Open G but it will be in A instead.
I do use light stings, but you'll have less tension on the neck because you tune 3 strings down a whole step, therefore lessening the tension neck. Tune your Low E and A string down a whole step and you high E down a whole step and that is Open G.
A bit much for my novice ass but I can glean the simplicity . Been getting into Hawaiian slack key also in open G ...so messing around with the blues in ADHD ticks is the natural outcome ...Thank you for sharing your blues.
Oh Kansas City, Here I come, is what I hear. The band I play in plays it in A though. When you play through the 12 bar blues in full, that is what I hear.
Fair enough! It only looks like I am playing a G. In reality, the high E string is tuned down to D which means that when you fret the note at the 3rd fret, you are playing a pitch that is one tone lower. So if the 1st string 3rd fret normally sounds G, when you tune it down one tone, you get an F note on the 1st string 3rd fret. Which gives you a G7 chord. GBDF is G7. Forget about where my fingers are placed, listen to the sound of the chord.
Very good. Lots of Zep is open G. Elton John the b!tch is back. Saturday nites alright. Doobie brothers south city midnight lady really opens up the whole fretboard in open G and would be an excellent lesson.
