How Two Letters Ruined a Doctor's Career | The Twisted Case of Allan Zarkin

  • In 1999, 31 year old dentist Liana Gedz was met with excruciating pain near her abdomen just a few days after birth. When she finally got a deeper look at what happened, she was absolutely mortified because her doctor and friend Allan Zarkin "dr. Zorro" had horrifyingly carved his initials into her abdomen. Why this obstetrician did this would leave Manhattan NYC residents and a whole nation shocked.

What insane behaviour! I imagine that as rare as I hope it would be, that it wouldn’t be something restricted to OBGYNs. Mine was absolutely amazing and helped me deliver two healthy term babies via planned c sections due to my complicated anatomy. What struck me was how inappropriate this doctor was to establish a social relationship with his patient as described. Am I right to assume that’s a type of professional boundary doctors usually don’t cross? Also, if someone in the operating room observe a surgeon behaving inappropriately (I would think internal alarm bells would have gone off when they witnessed the doctor carve the first letter!), what’s the appropriate response at the time to ensure patient safety?

This reminds me of a similar case in Birmingham, UK in which a surgeon named Simon Bramhall burned his initials with electric beams on livers of two patients during liver transplant surgeries in 2013. Other doctors did not discover his misconduct until one of the patients received another surgery due to complications. He was charged with two counts of assault by battery in 2017 and banned from practicing medicine in 2022.
This one is more bizarre, though. Who the hell will leave initials literally on patient skin? That is not just reckless but makes zero sense. It makes the abuse so evident that everyone can see it and will definitely lands whoever did this in trouble, while sound-minded "real" A-holes will try hard to hide their true nature.

not sure how religious the family was but she mentioned they were both Jewish, Jewish cemeteries won't allow people with tattoos to be buried so it's unlikely she'd want to cover it with a tattoo. the craziest part of this story to me is how many hospital staff knew about it and didn't do anything. @@emmalineconrad244hello! resident jew here. the idea that jewish cemeteries won’t bury you with a tattoo is largely a misconception. pretty much a myth. i cant guarantee there isn’t ONE cemetery out there which would refuse a burial- perhaps maybe in remote haredi communities but all other jewish cemeteries won’t have an issue burying you. it’s a mitzvah to take care of the dead and there isn’t an exception if your body is mutilated or modified. she likely wouldn’t get a cover tattoo anyway though, because there’s a quote in the Torah saying it is wrong to self mutilate- and most jews took this to include tattoos because you are technically piercing the skin. i assume she is religious, because she went to a jewish hospital in new york

They learn about noticing/correcting their coworkers mistakes because those can happen to anyone. The idea is that if there are enough people paying attention then there’s a better chance that at least one person will notice the mistake. If a mistake does occur then it has to be reported to the hospital, but there aren’t really any age-specific guidelines. There are some people advocating for mandatory cognitive screening tests for older healthcare workers like they have for pilots, and I know a few hospitals have tried implementing it. I think it’s gets tricky for them legally because the doctor could easily turn around and sue for age discrimination.

The problem is that there is often a very steep power differential between doctors and other healthcare staff, which makes it very difficult for staff to feel comfortable reporting a physician. Especially some of these old school surgeons who are used to being treated like Gods in the hospital.
It can be even worse in clinics, because oftentimes physicians are part owners of the business, so the only people who can do anything about it are other physician owners, and sometimes they don't even have the ability to remove a provider.
Fortunately, that is changing in healthcare, but it's a slow process.

I love your content. I've actually never come across a channel that focuses on incompetent doctors who need to be accountable for flat-out MURDERING, neglecting and treating patients as if they are nothing.
I have been treated like garbage by doctors, nurses and even EMTs. I have been yelled at, and gaslit, among other things. I have severe pain in my spine and it took 4+ years for them to even do one single X-ray.
They finally did one and the ER doctor said "Everything looks fine." I went to see my family doctor and he said you have pretty bad arthritis and your spine is curved. I have to walk with a cane now and I won't be able to walk in about 7 years. I was gaslit by a family doctor who works in the ER and has a massive ego and he acts like a sociopath. I sat there for 7 hours without any pain medication and it was the worst pain I had ever felt. I have reported him 4 times to that hospital and nothing has ever been done. He needs to be fired, along with a few other "ER" doctors at my local hospital. They are family physicians. They are NOT equipped to deal with people in the ER in my opinion. This idiot didn't even know how to give a proper ultrasound on my uterus.

Edit: my mom has a medical malpractice story which is pretty bad. Would you ever consider doing something like Hannah Alonzo and read our malpractice stories out loud? I can see if she would share it-- although she would probably want to remain anonymous. The doctor who did this to her just moved around states when his license was revoked in each one. Yeah, this happened multiple times in multiple states, not just here in Ohio.

If he did have Pick's disease that makes the behaviour of the other medics even more abhorrent. Knowing he’d done this and was liable to do it again, yet still protected him is against everything medicine should be about. Obviously they wouldn’t have known his diagnosis but they would have known about his behaviours. In the U.K. we’ve recently had a nurse called Lucy Letby who murdered 7 babies at least. Despite consultants raising alarms the Countess of Chester Hospital protected her so not to give the hospital a bad name, in fact the consultants were the ones threatened with disciplinary action. This sort of thing has to stop, ‘whistleblowers' should be listened to, respected and be made to feel safe to voice concerns.
The parents were Jewish from two countries where antisemitism is rife and extreme. To think they’d found a safe haven in a country like America, only for this to happen must have been soul destroying.
My late mother had Lewy Bodies Dementia, it’s amazing how much personalities can change. However, as a boomer myself is their anything more creepy than a boomer discussing previous sexual encounters?

So. They don't think he's a danger to the public even after finding out he tried to KILL their newborn after mutilating her? I just....how is he NOT a danger to others? Yes he definitely needs mental health support due to his condition but he is absolutely dangerous. I don't know if his condition made him a raging narcissist or not but that level of disregard for others is 100% dangerous. Especially considering the long term relationship they'd built with him. He can get help and still go to prison for the attempted murder of an infant even if they didn't want to see him jailed for his brutal assault. This is horrible and they went through so much pain that would have been made much worse if a single nurse hadn't stepped in to physically restrain him.
Mental and physical health shouldn't absolve people from facing the consequences of their criminal actions. It should only be taken into consideration when discussing how those consequences should be handled. Therapy yes absolutely! But also prison! He literally tried to murder a newborn and essentially stood by a lot of his actions after the fact and it partially being due to health complications doesn't mean he should just get to wander around freely. This was ... maddening.

There just have to be real consequences AND rehabilitation efforts or we create a cycle of criminality. Which is ...what this country kind of subsists on. (I'm in the US for clarity and I think our Justice System is massively messed up and helps basically no one.)

With that said my husband had knee surgery with a “renowned” surgeon whom made us fully aware that he made sure he “autographed” his knee internally prior to closing the surgical wound. At the time I was just happy my spouse’s surgery went well but after I had time to process his statement I was honestly dumbfounded, thank goodness he had a great recovery. However, till this day I find that it was totally unnecessary and unprofessional.
