- House of the Dragon had it's season finale on Sunday, and I've never seen an episode! So going back to my Game of Thrones roots, I decided to watch just the finale and see if I can figure out what's going on.

You should watch the whole season backwards. 10, 9, 8 etc... that might work strangely well for how this show is structured

Because the people complaining just want something to complain about. The show doesn't lyrics everything on a platter for its audience and expects them to use at last half a brain cell when viewing and dumb people can't stand it.
Nah, I think he probably have some information before watching the finale. There some conclusion he made that make no sense if you really only watch the finale or even a slip like calling lucerys 14 yo....
@@nlaras5830 Rhaenyra says how old he is in the very first scene of the episode. They want you to know that he's just a kid so it's that much worse when he gets the chomp at the end.

Actually you are correct, dragons dont stop growing until they die, the size and rate of which depends on their living conditions.
it also depends on how strong the blood magic in the world currently is, 1st generation dragons grow bigger and faster than 2nd generation dragons, same goes with 2nd gen to 3rd gen, Balerion and Vhagar have only grown so big cuz they were 1st gen of after the doom of Valyria with the doom of Valyria the practice of blood magic ended so over the generation the magic fades so do the dragons, the last born dragon of the last generation only grew as big as a house cat.

@@Ghilannugs sure, but consider this when the witch in Game of Thrones / ASOIAF did blood magic on Daenerys, magic was reintroduced into the world this was implied by the stoned eggs hatching and the red comet appearing, the reason why Dany her dragons grew so fast seems to be exactly that: they were directly forged out of blood magic, just like the Dragons of old Valyria.
Drogon and the two others grew as big as they became in just 7-8 years, Dragons during the Dance didn't grow nearly as fast, it is no coincidence that the growth rate declines the further a generation is apart from the origin.

Not saying there ISN'T a relation but you're original comment stated something like it was a fact and relatively detailed when in truth we know very little about what's actually going on with dragons, magic, blood magic and old valyria. We just know there IS a connection

The budget for this show was actually massive compared to GoT budgets

@@GallowayJesse Ya, the byzantine art style of the Targaryen's in this show was amazing. The cinematography was beautiful too. Game of thrones was a political thriller fantasy epic. This show is a political thriller telenovela and I'm here for it.
The way you keep harping on Jacerys’ and Lucerys’ brown hair is killing me. 😂 That’s basically the entire crux of the show.
I love how he couldn't get over Rhaynera's kids. Boy how he DANCED around that plot point SO hard. 😂

Ok, a couple of notes:
- you were surprisingly like 70/80% accurate on the family tree, even guessing that Rhaenys is Matt Smith's cousing, so well done;
- You were also right when you guessed that the first season was a lot smaller in scale compared to GoT, we mainly just see the Targaryens, but next season that will change;
-This episode was special, because we were only seeing the perspective of this set of characters reacting to the King's death, in episode 9, we see the Green's perspective, so you'll meet them there;
- You were right on the money about the page that the Lizard guy gives to Rhaenyra;
not completely right about the page lizard guy gave her. I assume he thinks that the queen is around the age to be her mother, so when she was a child it was like a mother reading a story to her. I doubt he assumed they read it together when they were both children because they were best friends before she married her father.

Rhaenys is Darmon's aunt
He's also right about the succession conflict being the inciting incident. The rest of the season is there for us to care about it.

The king before Viserys was Jaehaerys, who married his sister Alyssane and had a lot of children but outlived almost all of them. (One of his daughters outlived him, but she had run off to become a prostitute in Essos rather than letting him force her to swear vows of chastity and become a septa, basically a nun, after discovering that she had been sleeping around with a lot of boys. He also had one living son, Vaegon, an Archmaester of Mathematics at the Citadel. He had no interest in ruling and would never produce heirs of his own, as swore vows of celibacy upon becoming a maester and was an asexual aromantic anyway.)
Jaehaerys's eldest son was Aemon Targaryen, who married Jocelyn Baratheon. (Jocelyn was Jaehaery's half-sister, as his mother Alyssa Velaryon remarried Robar Baratheon after King Aenys I died. Alyssa died in an emergency c-section to deliver Jocelyn.) Rhaenys is the only child of Aemon Targaryen. (In the book she is not blond, as she inherited dark hair from the Baratheon side of her family. She started greying early though and had mostly silvery hair by the time of this episode.) When Aemon died Jaehaerys chose to name his second son Baelon Targaryen as his heir instead of her.
Baelon Targaryen married his full sister Alyssa Targaryen. They had two children together: Viserys and Daemon.
After Baelon died, Jaehaerys called a great council of lords from all over the seven kingdoms and allowed them to vote on who his next heir should be. (In the book it is implied that he did this to avoid another major argument with his wife Alyssane, who was very upset when he favored Baelon over Rhaenys. The book also implied though that the council may have been the idea of his third son Archmaester Vaegon Targaryen, whom the show seems to have cut entirely.) In the show the council dismissed most candidates quickly and then votes 20 to 1 to elect Viserys instead of his cousin Rhaenys, but in the book they actually dismiss Rhaenys in an earlier round as chose the 24 year old Viserys over Rhaenys's 7 year old son Laenor.
This was actually a perfect episode to start with. You missed about half of the cast but still got the main plot points nearly perfect! Also Lannisters and Starks got a name drop this episode, during the war planning meetings...
The Lannisters are literally in it...the small council
Starks are such a huge part, just get their big reveal in season 2 💃💃💃
It was really funny how strongly you reacted to the hair color of the Blonde Heir's children.

Yeah, he has very strong intuition. Definitely a strong episode for his first watch. I strongly recommend he watch this out of order too.

Most of the budget is going into dragon food and paying the dragonshit shoveling team, so they can't have as many characters.
They even started feeding the actors to the dragons.

Steve is back, omg! Also, yes, the dragons never stop growing if they aren't locked up anywhere... like goldfish. LOL Vhagar (thousand foot dragon) is 180 years old and Arrax (baby dragon that messed up big time) was only about 14.

Also, we all had nine episodes to hate the wigs. So I understand the distraction lol
If you think watching Game of Thrones was confusing, wait until you watch the first 9 episodes. You nailed the whole hair thing...on several fronts, actually. It's great to watch another one of your videos.

I love when you see the big dragon (Vhagar) at Storm’s End and say “he sees another dragon…is that…what that is?” It’s so much bigger than anything you will have seen, it really is a good question! This really tickled me! Brings back memories of when you did this for GoT. Great job!

You got a lot right. Lannisters and Starks still show up, but they're secondary characters. Another thing is Aegon who was crowned is the brother of blonde heir (same dad, different mom), but the Greens made him king cuz he's a dude and blonde heir is not. Nailed the part with the page (blonde heir and the mom of Aegon were BFFs once).

I guess it's a testament to how well the show is written that you can still make sense of the plot mostly fine. You got way more correct than I thought you would, even your family tree was pretty on point.
It's a testament to how cleanly the story flows that you got so much accurate without knowing any of the background.

I'm generally impressed with how you guessed the family tree. Aside from aegon being matt smiths brother and the father of rhaenyra's brown hair kids ( which is forgivable as you haven't seen the house he's from yet) you were pretty much spot on.
I laughed so hard when you said 'so who is the dad then' about rhaenyras boys not being blonde
The reason it's only really following the dragon family (targaryens) is because at the time of this show they're in total control over all the other families basically and have been for a few hundred years thanks to their dragons, nobody else has any. This civil war that's about to start is apparently what weakens them enough that the stark/baratheon rebellion is able to win and overthrow them just before game of thrones season 1 starts
And that's why there's so many relevant families to follow in game of thrones compared to this because nobody has total power any more at that point
Well, this civil war is what causes most dragons to die, but there will be things weakening their rule even further later on

I am so happy to see you go back to your roots. So much has changed in the world since you watched game of thrones, but the pure joy of seeing this video in my reccomended list is just as strong as it was before. I hope you decide to continue watching in reverse order, and see how much you can put together until the beginning, and then even looking at the book material this show comes from because it is only a little bit more than 1 chapter in the book.

The two girls with white wigs are Sea Snake's and his wife's GRANDdaughters (children of their deceased daughter and Matt Smith's character).
King Aegon and Aemond (One-Eyed) are half-brothers of Rhaenyra.
It may also be important to note that King Aegon II and Aemond One-Eye are the Grandsons of Lizard Guy.

This was great! It's cool to see the both how the show did a good job of establishing events and characters even without prior context, and how someone with basic media literacy can pretty easily parse what's going on
