- Watch a sword expert react to House of the Dragon! We take a look at the Game of Thrones prequel and and its House of the Dragon sword fight scenes! How realistic is the House of the Dragon jousting scene, the Daemon Targaryen fight with the Crab Feeder army, and the sword training scene featuring Aegon Targaryen, Aemond Targaryen, Jacaerys Velaryon, and Lucerys Velaryon? We got Matt Easton, an all-around sword, HEMA, and battle expert, to look at these HotD fight scenes and break down just how realistic they are.
Matt Easton is a Historical European Martial Artist, Antique Arms Dealer, and owner of the fencing club Schola Gladiatoria.

cool video! you should watch the scene where Aemond trains with Criston in the court yard, when Aemond is older in episode 8
They said they intentionally made the jousting armor ridiculously ostentatious and nonfunctional, to show how decadent they’ve become due to going 60 years without a major war
what always bothers me is the lack of neck protection.
They made it like that cause it’s fantasy
Sure mister sheep what other excuses do you have for us
Hi there!

Right?!
the jousting anyway. The movie was awful

False
"You knew me, and still you rode?"
Great movie, but that ridiculous armor with the exposed throat just made me shudder.
Regarding Daemon's open helmet: It's customary in Westeros to hold back against royals(kings, princes) in tournaments for fear of injuring or even killing them. By wearing an open helmet Daemon forces his opponents to hold back even more or harming a prince.
Still doesn't discount the point of flying splinters, unless they weren't supposed to hit him at all
@beenright5115 again it's all about style and representations of their house.
After all most jousting tournament people wear all kinds of armors
Yes, that would be the point. Daemon is very clearly a daredevil with little to no regard for his personal safety (shown later by his solo charge at the beach). All for his personal glory. So by wearing an open helmet he increases his chance to win the tournament a little but increasing the risk of injury immensely is part of his character. @@beenright5115
@@beenright5115 Daemon is honestly just that fearless. He is the most dangerous man in the world during this time period.
In GRRM's world, the term Longsword is usually misapplied to mean a long but single handed arming sword. Daemon wields the famous sword Dark SIster, which is a Bastard sword with a slender Valyriansteel blade originally made to be used by a woman.
@@magnusthered4973 It was specified that the blade was "made for a woman's hand" Although it's unknown which woman as it was forged before Visenya was born
Swords are dexterity weapons, a narrow blade would just require better edge alignment and in exchange for faster movements
@@magnusthered4973 As per GRRM's description of it, the size & shape of the blade was literally "designed for a woman's hand", so no, theyre not confused, they just read the description of the weapon, which is on the wiki and sourced
@@magnusthered4973 You're the confused one lmao.
@@magnusthered4973 Both the sword hilt and blade is slender compared to other typical Bastard swords..
Doesn't mean it's very small or slim or anything.. just a little bit slender..
It's the same length as any other bastard sword in the story..
Interesting historical fact: Horse Armor was the first DLC in history.
...no it wasn't?
Older games used to have expansion packs with whole new disc with the content.
@@VinnyFromTheBurb And even after that, a quick google search will confirm a DLC recognizable by all today's standards in 2002 for a mech game on Xbox.
And taking your angle and pushing it even further, tabletops games have had expansion books and boxes for decades before Horse Armor.
Horse armor ain't the first dlc in history but it was the first of the "microtransaction/cosmetic-only" kind.
It's notorious for being the one that started the whole trend of selling smaller bits of content that aren't necessarily remarked as expansions.
what a meme
so what I'm gathering from his final thoughts is that GoT might have actually learned from their mistakes.
Condal is killing it.
Maybe not so much learned as have new people working on this one with different priorities with the combat/weapons/armor. That being said there is less and less excuses for why they wouldn't know how medieval combat/etc actually happened with just what is on UA-cam these days. A major wealth of knowledge to be found.
Yes. First things first, replace the original team.
The reason they are running is A: to save Daemon and B: to surround and trap the crab feeders army before they can retreat into the caves. So they have to run.
Exactly theres analysis and not even watching it at all
@Dank Waifu thats what happens when an army runs into a battle, formation gets pretty well thrown out the window.
@@gameco5162 only in poor movie battles, guarantee you no one ever fought this way
Whatever the circumstances, running out of formation at a well-drilled opponent is suicide. He is absolutely right.
@@Silverfish-qv8ig are you serious? If they don’t encircle them, they all go back in their caves, their plan fails and they lose the war. . In war there is no such thing as “never”, you have to be willing to break any convention to achieve victory. Chuichi Nagumo and you would get along very well, you can find him at the bottom of the pacific.
Daemon is crazy enough to joust with an exposed face. A few nutters have in the real historical past, and daemons as crazy as they come lol
Also the battlefield is too broken up with debris and ship parts for proper unit cohesion, they're trying to get the pirates stuck into a melee before they can get back into their caves
Pretty sure most knights took dives against royalty especially if the dude had an exposed face lol
@@joshuawatts1924 that's is also definitely a possible factor lol
on the battle against the crabfeeder it makes sense for them to sprint, the objective of the velaryon army is to prevent the pirate army form retreating into the caves, the pirates are also not keeping a formation because Leanor and his dragon may arrive at any time so they need to kill Daemon asap, if they do they win the war and force the Velaryons to retreat
Nice one!
Lets see him react to Malenia's Waterfowl Dance.
It's clearly a technique from 13th century Spanish manuscripts

Yeah he's actually a teacher unlike certain other... individuals.
it's worth noting that most of the original wasn't about the fights. They didn't prioritize them for that reason until about season 4. There's even a battle in season 1 (I think) where they just skip right past it.
it was for lack of budget
D & D absolutely did not want to just skip over their fight scenes, most of the battles they skipped over they did because it was out of their budget. Not to mention how they actually inserted fights where they could, for example in the books Jaime vs Ned isn't a fight between the two, Jaimes men attack Neds on horse back and Ned rides down one or two Lannister soldiers before his horse trips and break his leg but in the show they made it a whole fight.
@@coldscorpion6973 it wasn’t for lack of budget, the battle is skipped over in the book too
@@junethanoschurchill6750 Think he's talking about Green Fork, which is not skipped over in the book - we read it from the perspective of someone in the thick of the melee.
@@junethanoschurchill6750 you're thinking of Whispering Wood
Always love to see Mr. Easton talk about penetration and the flail he has in his study.
And Vegetis.
What do you think of the design of the king's guard armor, especially over the chest. The way the banding comes together seems ideal to catch a point and insure it is guided in for a solid thrust. Reminds me of the big V or chevron reinforcement on jousting armor to take the tip off the chest and to the shoulder away from the face but when the show designers turned it upside down it has the opposite effect and seems very dangerous
I'm disappointed he didn't talk about Corlys Velaryon's axe, but it was used in the video footage.
Dragon rider is who matters at the end. Not the dragon. Doesn't matter how big the dragon is. Rider must be experienced. Look at how small Moondancer is and what she does to Sunfyre.
Sunfyre was already heavily injured during that battle though.
Yeah but who was the most dragon kills in the Dance tho? Moondancer is just basically fighting a ragged Sunfyre. Not at all amazing.
Sunfyre fought Maelys and Grey Ghost before Moondancer
Battle at the God's Eye.

That stop thrust followed by the power assisted downward cut was just *chef's kiss.
Dunk and Egg has the potential to be a 10 episode class on 15th century/ Westerosi weapons.
One correction: We have copious documentation of folks jousting with a loose helm/open face, or no helm at all. People be cray-cray the same way they will engage in countless other forms of deadly combat without a helm, so too with jousting. Indeed, many soldiers of all types throughout history have been willing to forego, or willingly compromise their head/face protection for the ability to see, hear, speak and breathe more easily.
On the one hand, helmets are without a doubt the most important bit of kit you could ever have. One bonk to the head, and you're done. However, they also rob the wearer of many of their most vital senses. The only reason they use such overbuilt helms in jousting is because the rider doesn't actually have to do anything but look forward and go along for the ride. They aren't really "fighting" in any 3D, dynamic sense.
When is someone going to make a movie or series where Matt Easton plays a sword combat trainer. I'd watch it in a heartbeat. As long as he's also off screen trainer.
Lol every episode would start with a disclaimer saying it would be "quick" and then it would go off on a 20 min sub-plot for context.
Why's it making a metallic sound?
It's an Ironwood Bannister of course 😉👌
Always a pleasure when Matt is on these segments!
"Who doesn't have a flail sitting around in their study?" - cracked me up
What about the noblemen carnage during the tournament? Bye to the future of so many houses... Hilarious
I'm surprised by how much Matt liked these. Nice hear of these improvements.
the velaryon army was running to surprise the crabfeeders so they couldn’t escape to cave
@14:29 In the books, this is actually Criston Cole's choice of weapon.
Love my boy Matt Easton, these shows need to hire the bloke seriously
8:45 not to mention that this type of helmet (a great helmet) is 13th century thing, while their armour looks about century or two more advanced.
Since, “A Knight’s Tale.” That is my go-to background movie, always on during laundry.
Hi. Nice video, btw Chair in backgeound is just gorgeous.
Narratively speaking, the fact that the kids aren't wearing helmets may also indicate how needlessly cruel sir Criston was when he had the kids start sparring with each other.
I've been watching the Highlander tv series lately, and have been wondering what our expert here thinks of the sword fights in the show. Some are obviously limited by the low skill levels of their guest stars, but some are quite interesting, particularly a series of fights involving an antagonist who has an old fashioned hook hand.
The fights have been better than GoT, so have the hero weapons. The weapons in GoT looked like something from Marto and the stage combat looked like a renfaire. Those aspects are far improved.
Yeah imo the attention to detail and production is far increased
The annoying thing is GoT started out so well, everyone wore actual suits of armour, helmets, everything; then it all devolved and practically everyone was prancing around in leather.
This was a great breakdown, thanks.
If you shoot at a spinning or turning person the arrow won’t penetrate as deeply as a still target. Hang a roast beef on a string and spin it , and shoot it wile it’s spinning. It would make a great video Matt. Do you have a bow Matt ? We never see it if you do ?
18:01 Yup and having the knees bent also helps you lunge forward more quickly and explosively

around @5:13 the Arrows stopped because he was wearing plot armor, that's the reason why it didnt go through his body as much as it would and all injuries are 100% non-lethal.
Not doubting their authenticity, but I'd be worried about stabbing armour or another hard surface with the eared dagger displayed- there doesn't seem to be a lot to stop the hand slipping up the dagger on impact and causing injury to the user. Much rather have something more substantial personally!
6:02 did you notice when he says you are more likely to fall over due to running a dude actually falls over?
I’ve always figured a flail was used for laying about from horseback. That on foot you would use a fixed mace.

Cool to have Matt on IGN, love the HEMA community and how this is being brought more mainstream. Hope to see Skallagrim, Shadiversity, Metatron, etc on mainstream channels too
Skallagrim and Shadiversity are basically hacks, imo. They BARELY know what they're talking about and get butthurt when someone points it out. Matt Easton and Metatron at least have a lot of credibility. Wish Antony Cummins would get some more airtime, though. He's an expert on lots of samurai/ninja stuff.
@@henrikaugustsson4041 give me literally one instance of Skal getting butthurt
Even once firearms were a thing, one generally didn't just sprint as fast as possible. There's a lot of ground to cover, and if you're too tired to fight effectively when you get there, that's bad. Full-on sprinting for as far as possible didn't really come in until guns that could shoot fast enough to make every second crossing the open field highly dangerous.
An ordered advance, followed by a charge at the last moment where you have just enough distance left to get up to speed before encountering the enemy is usually the much better tactic.
Rome: Total War had quotes from historical figures during loading screens. One of then read: "What can a man do, who charges when out of breath?"
love that roll
Makes sense that the troops went running because it was their Prince and a dragon rider, who went in to drag out the crabfeeder

Hey! Matt on IGN?!
If a guy was galloping full force and hit you with a massive lance in a gap in your plate armor in a joust, would mail armor really make much a difference? I’ve seen experiments where arrows have no problem penetrating mail, so would a lance be any different?
It definetly helps for the splinters and it is one more barrierer that the lance has to go through if it can penetrate the plate . But yes Mail alone would never stop the lance let alone the force it produce on the body
Probably not much, but at least it'd hold your body together a bit better though you're still going to probably die it won't be so sudden.
Splintered lances lead to the deaths of several medieval kings.
now lets see what this guy says about the fight scenes in rings of power
Fight scenes????
The Italian call them "mulignan"-Tony Soprano
"unit cohesion" in battle.....watch "The Last Kingdom" with shield walls.
Why didn’t he cover the kid fight 🤔
If we believe Thucydides, Greek hoplites would frequently charge the enemy on foot during their advance, and it seemed to work for them. Just ask the Persians.
There's a difference between a charge in formation... and just running forth like an unruly mob of Braveheart extras.
We can excuse running and losing formation because it's GRR Martinworld, not reality
Higgledy- piggledy :D
Moulinette Rouge was a very different movie.
Great video, really, but please can we stop the "high tech" sound effects? It didn't work in 2005, even less today.
In the Dameon on the beach scene it bothers me that the enemy come at him one after another, allowing him to take down each one singly.
There are arrows flying. Most are tryna sprint at him to stop him. If they stopped and formed a formation they'd get hit with arrows and daemon could just go elsewhere.
@@cptclonks7279 What he's doing is something nobody did in muscle powered warfare except berzerks who then quickly died. You stay in formation, a man on the left and another on the right and engage as a group.
Just realized Eamon beat Criston with a sword while sparing him in a flail...foreshadowing?
He lost the sword in the middle of the fight. Didn’t win with it for sure and he lost the fight overall

@@criticalbil1 yes.. when Crabfeeder realised that wasn't helpful he sent out in groups and daemon had to stay a second longer and he got hit my arrows...
When you're a battle commander, you don't send your entire men in one big wave..
Just like that.. there's a huge chance that they've been watched and could've been ambushed..
But when Daemon was getting too close, Crabfeeder realised ambush or not, he must send more men, and he did..
And he got ambushed..
The only thing one could judge about this battle is how Corlys and the soldiers ran, without formation, just sprinting...
One could argue it's because Daemon was surrounded.. (but he wasn't, since Laenor and Seasmoke already cleared the field)
Lots of people making fun of this one guy and all those bows and they don't hit. Actually it is very difficult to hit a moving target. Just ask a hunter or if you have tried to shoot clay pigeons.
